B.5.e. Isabell Nesbit {B.5.e.}

     Isabell Nesbit was born about 1780 in Rockbridge County, Virginia. When she was was about seven years old, the Nesbit family picked up stakes and moved to the western side of the Appalachian Mountains, eventually coming to rest in Fayette County, Virginia. The easiest access to Fayette County would have been along the road following the great valley to southwestern Virginia, thence along the Wilderness Trail to the Kentucky River. Other Berry family members could be found in Washington County, so it is probably a safe bet that this was their route of travel. The family originally removed to Fayette County in 1787, then moved to an unknown location several years later, probably Woodford or Scott County, and by 1794 were living in Harrison County, Kentucky. In the fall of 1797 Isabell married William Wardlaw in Harrison County, Kentucky. William, who was born in the late summer of 1771 in Augusta County, Virginia, was a son of Robert Wardlaw and Martha Downey, another family originally from the Bevereley/Borden area of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. Their first two children wer eborn in Harrison County, but in 1800, the Wardlaw clan moved north of the Ohio River into what was then called the Northwest Territories, specifically, to the part of Adams County, Ohio that was later split off to form Brown County, and here they had five more children. While serving as a member of Capt. Jacob Boerstler's company, William was killed at the Battle of Brownstown in early August of 1812. Isabell never remarried, and spent the rest of her life in Brown County, Ohio, passing away in the late summer of 1861.

History of Brown County, Ohio: Scott Township, by Robert McCall, MD
The War of 1812, The Battle of Brownstown
William Wardlow killed at Battle of Brownstown, Michigan Territory (Capt. Jacob Boerstler’s Company)
Early Settlement
The first permanent settlement made in what is now Washington Township is credited to the Wardlaw family. Just prior to the dawn of the present century--in the early spring of 1800--Robert Wardlaw, with wife, Martha Downey, and a number of sons and daughters, some of whom were married and were parents themselves, emigrated from Kentucky and halted on the banks of White Oak and effected the Wardlaw settlement. The family had for some years resided in Kentucky, where the father owned considerable land, which, it is said, he traded for that on White Oak. Here he possessed 300 acres, in Survey No. 1,053, which lies on either side of White Oak Creek, in what is now the subdivisions of Washington, Scott and Pike, at a point where the three are close together. Robert's home was in Scott, but those of William and Samuel, who were men of families, were in Washington, along the North and East Forks of the creek. The family had, prior to going to Kentucky, resided in the State of Virginia. Further reference to the father will be found in the sketch of Scott Township. Other sons and daughters of Robert and wife were John, James, Josiah, Hugh, Mattie and Jane. William's wife was Isabel Nesbitt, and their children were James, Samuel, Philander, Robert, Jane, Mary and Matilda, the most of whom became permanent residents of Brown County, and the men folks assisted in the clearing and improvement of land. The father, William, was a soldier of the war of 1812, a member of Capt. Jacob Boerstler's company, and was engaged in battle with the company at Brownstown, where he was killed August 4, 1812. Samuel Wardlaw married Elizabeth Nesbitt, a sister to William's wife, and their sons were Allen, Preston, Levi, Rainey and Henry; and the daughters were Mary, Ann and Elizabeth. All remained permanent settlers in the county, and Levi and Rainey of the township, where both are now residing, on the original tract of their parents. Samuel died May 6, 1848, in the seventy-fifth year of his age.

Analysis of the Timeline

     At this time, not much is known about the life of Isabel Nesbit and her husband, William Wardlaw. Both were born in Augusta or Rockbridge County, Virginia, and moved with their families to the western side of the Appalachian Mountains, eventually living in Harrison County, Kentucky. In 1797 Isabel and William were married in Harrison County, Kentucky, but the Wardlaw clan soon moved northward to southern Ohio, and Isabel, of course, went with them. She and William had a fairly large family, but, during the War of 1812, William was killed in the Battle of Brownstown. Isabel remained on the family farm for the rest of her life, never remarrying, passing away some 49 years later in Brown County, Ohio.
