Analysis of the Timeline
Margaret was the first child of Mary Berry and Samuel Nesbit to be born after the family had moved to Fayette County, Virginia. Several years later, the family moved again to Harrison County, Kentucky, where Margaret grew up. She appears in the 1810 federal census as a young woman living in her parent’s household, and was mentioned, although not specifically named, in her father’s 1814 will as one of his unmarried daughters. Her younger sister, Rebecca, got married in 1818, and either in late 1819 or early 1820, moved to Posey County, Indiana. Margaret came along and lived with her sister’s family. When Margaret’s older sister, Jane, passed away in early 1828, Margaret, and only Margaret, was specifically targeted to receive a monetary award. Even after Rebecca’s death in 1844, Margaret continued to live in her sister’s household until her own death in the fall of 1858. This close relationship strongly suggests that Margaret may have been suffering from some kind of mental incapacitation throughout her life that required care.
