The Gardiner's Line

Descendants of Lion Gardiner

Generation No. 1

      1.  Lion1 Gardiner was born 1599 in England, and died 02 Mar 1662/63 in East Hampton, Suffolk County, New York.  He married Mary Dirksdt Deuracant 1626 in Worden, Holland, daughter of Dirck Deuracant and Haechgen Bastiaens.  She was born 1601 in Worden, Holland, and died 1655 in East Hampton, Suffolk County, New York.

Notes for Lion Gardiner:

Under contract with patentees of Connecticut, Gardiner designed and erected (1635–36) the blockhouse at Saybrook, which he defended in the Pequot War (1636–37). He purchased (1639) Gardiner's Island from Native Americans and founded there the first English colony in present-day New York.

Lieutenant Gardiners household consisted of himself aged 36, his wife Mary aged 34, Elizabeth Collett, maid servant age 23, and William Jope workmaster aged 40, who all brought certificates from a Calvinistic church in Holland.

The Island which he gave to his wife, she bequeathed to her eldest son David; "en-tail" to the first male heirs following forever. Right to the Island was confirmed by grant from the Earl of Sterling, whose patent included territory in which it was embraced, after the islands of the Sound passed to New Netherlands. Under the grant, David Gardiner could make such laws as he pleased, for civil and church government; if "according to God and King."

He, along with his brother, Nathaniel, were  "proprietors" in the Connecticut-Susquehanna Purchase, which included land in what is now northern Pennsylvania.  So, in the year 1762, about the last of August, as he "recollects," he, with 93 others, including his brother Nathaniel, went to Wyoming (Valley), Pennsylvania.  "For the purpose of carrying on farming."  They remained only 10 days, finding it too late in the season to begin operations and returned to their homes until the following spring.  Early in the month of May, 1763, he, with others, returned to Wyoming and began work in earnest, making large improvements in what is now Wilkes-Barre, Kingston, Plymouth and Hanover.  In the fall of 1763 Indians raided the pioneers, killing Parshall's brother, Nathaniel. Parshall, with his family, went back to New York.  The last of April or the first of May, 1769, they returned to Pennsylvania.  But during the period of their absence, things had been happening in the Valley.  In Februrary, 1769, 40 Connecticut farmers came down into the valley of Wyoming to build a block house, which, from their numbers they called the "Forty-Fort." History has it that Parshall Terry was among the "first forty" men to return to the Wyoming settlement in February, 1769. According to Parshall's diary, he and his family "returned in April or May, 1769." It is possible that he was one of the reinforcements who came in May. See Eleazer Cary for an early connection between the Cary and Terry family.

According to Parshall Terry Family History by Lund, page 10

- - - -He was one of the proprietors and directors in the Connecticut-Susquehana Purchase Company, whose object it was to settle the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania.  In 1762, he and 93 others went into the Wyoming Valley, but they remained only 10 days.  They returned in May, 1763.  Their activities in this valley were opposed both by Indians and by the followers of Willliam Penn, referred to as Pennanites.  On October 15, 1763, the colony was attacked by the indians and about 20 of the settlers were killed.  This attack was a complete surprise and they had shortly before made a treaty with the Indians in which they had agreed to purchase the country.  The attack was really a part of the "Pontiac War" of United States History.

Notes for Deborah Clark:

Abraham Clark, 2nd cousin of Deborah, was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, as a state representative of New Jersey. Clement Clark Moore, another 2nd cousin of Deborah, wrote the famous poem, "The Night Before Christmas."

Died during the flight from the Forty Fort battle and massacre in the Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania.

After a number of years they sold to Reuben W. Fowler and went over on the Cohocton stream, near where Archey G. Parshall now lives, and built other mills, and there spent the remainder of their lives. David Parshall senior came to Springwater in an early day, and purchased a large quantity of land, and finally settled on the south aide of the road opposite to Samuel A. Howe. He had a number of children. I will give their names as far as I know. First. Deborah. before mentioned, Ass, David Jr., Amass, Sally, William and Ruth. Asa married Aurilla Hull, and they had five children. Harriet, Mrs. A. S. Root; Emily who died in 1855; Edwin A. and John D. are both living here in the valley with their mother. She died a number of years since but left several children, who are still living about here. Hiram and Stephen are both married and have families living here, and are well known. Notes for Allen Edward Payne:

About residence in Muskegon:

According to the obituaries of Minnie, Edith, and Sadie Payne, the family did not live in Muskegon when the census was conducted in 1910, and the three persons all died before the 1920 census, They lived at 45 Flint Avenue in Lakeside which would be the 8th ward.  45 Flint Avenue was changed to 2162 Sherman Blvd. in 1926; this is on the border with Norton Township, but they did live on the North (Muskegon) side of Flint Avenue.
