Was a tenant farmer of the estate Couwenhoven in the neighborhood Ceulhorst on the Hoogland near Amersfoort, owned by the family De Wijs who were holding it from the fuedal Landlord of Montfoort. May be identical with the Gerrit Jansz Couwenhoven who is mentioned in 1564 as a tenant of the landlord of the family Van Vanelveld abt. 1600.

The Name Van Couwenhoven varies in spelling as follows: VanCouwenhoven, VanKouwenhoven, Covenhoven, Couwenhoven, Crownover, Conover, Connover and maybe more.

        3.  Wolphert Gerretse² Van Kouwenhoven (Gerritt Jansz¹) was born 1584 in Amersfoort, Netherlands, and died Bet. 02 Mar 1661/62 - 24 Jun 1662 in New Amersfort, Kings County, New York.  He married Neeltgen Jacobdochter 17 Jan 1604/05 in "Tower of Our Lady", Dutch Reformed Church, Amersfoort, Netherlands, daughter of Jacob Petersz and Metgen Jacobsdr.  She was born Abt. 1584 in Netherlands, and died Abt. 1658 in New Amersfort, Kings County, New York.

Wolpert Gerretse Van Kouwenhoven, one of the founders of New Amsterdam (New York) and the founder of our family in America. He was one of five "head farmers" first sent by the Dutch West India Company to New Netherlands in 1625. Wolphert came with his wife Aeeltje Jans, whom he married January 17, 1605, in the Dutch Reformed Chuch at Amersfort, Holland, and their three surviving sons, Gerret, Jacob, and Pieter.

Until his return to Holland in 1629, Wolphert farmed Bouwerie (farm) No. 3 in New Amsterdam and, through his wife, engaged in the profiable fur trade.

While in Holland, Wolphert signed a six year lease with the Dutch West India Company for Bouwerie No. 6 (about 91 acres). He also contracted with Kiliaen Van Rensselar, patroon of Rensselarwick (comprised of many thousands of acres along the Hudson including most of present day Albany) as a factor or director and to be in charge of Bouwerie No. 7 in New Amsterdam, All this bore tribute to Wolphert's reputation for competence and dependability.

Upon his return from Holland May 24, 1630 on De Eendracht (The Unity), Wolphert farmed Bouwerie No. 6, and for about two years served under contract with Kiliaen Van Rensselar.

On June 30, 1636, Wolphert purchased land on Long Island called Keskateuw from the Indians, Here was established the first known white settlement on Long Island. Wolphert called his "plantation" Achterveldt, shown on the Manatus Map of New Netherlands as Farm No. 36, near the Indian long house of the Keskachau Tribe. Wolphert's house, surrounded by palisades, was the focal point of the village of New Amsterdam (later called Flatlands).

The first reference to Wolfer Gerritse when WulphertGerrits signed an agreement with his stylized A. According to the terms of that document, he agreed to assume the property and debts of the deceased parents of his wive Neeltgen Jacobsdr from the other heirs for 100 guilders. Her brother Herman Jacobsz also signed this document as well as her brother in law  Willem Dircx who was married to Aeltgen Jacobs Petergen Petersdr, the underage daughter of her brother Peter Jacobsz, had already received 50 guilders on December 15 1611. Wulphert Gerritsz and his wife Neeltgen Jacobdr sold a bleachercamo outside the Coppelpoort of Amersfoort to HendrickJanss and his wife HasgenbThonis for 1,200 Carolus Guilders, the occupation of Wolfert is not disclosed in this document on March 22 1612. In the settlement of the estate of Wolfert's wife in Amersfoort, it was declared before the court that his profession at the time was baker on August 8 1612 Amersfoort, Netherlands. Wolphert took part in a curious agreement with Herman Zieboltz of Amsterdam, before Johan van Ingen an officer of the court of Utrchet. The name of the Amsterdammer suggests that he was a German or that he was of German decent. His name is also spelled Syboelt and Zyeboltz in those documents.  According to a "donatiaq iner vivos" (gift to the living person). Ziebolt gave Wolphert two morgans of turf ground near Cologne in recognition of services rendered (but not payment for them). No monetary amount is mentioned for the services of the turf ground. In a second document of the same date issued by the same officer of the court of Utrecht, Ayeboliz made a debt owed by him by Henrick Adrianesz and Adriaen Adriansz over to Wolpher Gerrits baker and Cornelis Wynantsz innkeeper. This second document authorized Wulpher Gerritss and Cornelis Wynantsz to assume ownership of the two morgens of turfground mentioned in the  first document. These documents create the impression that Zieboltz was unable to pay Wolfert money owed him, that the Amsterdammer made over a debt on which he had not been able to collect, and that Wolfert may have agreedto these vague terms because he would otherwise not be able to retrieve anything from the business dealings with the Zieboltz on April 14 1615. Wulpher Gerritss baker appeared as a witness before Johan van Ingen officer of the court of Utrecht, in a case in which Willem Gerritz miller testified that Griet Maes was evading the city grain tax. The document does not specify that Wulpher and Willem were brothers, and if such was the case, it is likely that this would have been discussed in the document on May 16 1616. HendrickJanss and Haesgen Thonis made the last payment on the bleach camp which they had purchsed from Wolfert Gerretse and Neeltge Jacobdr, and the property was made over to them on October 28 1616. He from Aert van Schayck and his wife Anna Barents a house on the Langegraft in Amersfoort which lay between the house of the aforesaid Aert on the one side and that of Hendrickgen Barents widow of Aelbert Conrneiss the other side, while the breadt of the house lay on the Lieverrouwestraet (Dear Lady Street). Wolphert was listed as a baker on January 30, 1617 Langegraft, Amersfoort, Netherlands. Within a short time, Wolpher placed three mortgages on this house. Perhaps the transactions with Zieboltz were unprofitable and was one of the causes of his need for money. On Feb 15 1617 Wulpher Gerritss baker and his wife Neeltgen Jacobsdr borrowed 100 guildres from the Armen te Amersfoort on which he agreed to pay 6 guilders per year. On May 16 1617 Wulpher Gerritss baker and his wife Neeltgen borrowed 200 guilders from Cornelis Baecx van der Tommen at a yearly interest of 12 guilders. On Jul 25 1617, Wolphur Gerritss and his wife Neeltgen Jacobsdr borrowed 250 guilders from Anna Goerts widow of Franck Frandkss at 15 guilders inters per year between Feb 1617 and Jul 1617. Wo;phert Gerritsz and his wife Neeltgen Jacobs purchased a bleachcamp outside the Coppelpoort of Amersfoort with Hubert Lambertsz Moll and his wife Geertgen Cornisdochter as their partners. They borrowed 500 Carolus Guilders from Ghijsbert Cornelisz van Cuijlenburch, a citizen of the city of Utrecht, at an annual interest of 25 guilders and 20 stivers. In addition, Hubert Lamberts and his wife Geertje Cornelisdochter contracted a special mortgage for 400 Carolus Guilders with the consent of Wulffert Gerritsz and his wife.  On the north side  of the property lay the River Eem, on the east the city moat and on the south and west the heirs of Gerrit van Speudle. This property came with two other mortgages: 200 guilders to the Poth and 600 guilders to Jo. Catharina van Morendael not yet conveyed to her. In a codicil, Wulpher Gerritsz baker and his wife Neeltgen Jacobs become party to the mortgage of Hubert Lambertsz Moll and his wife Geertge Cornelis for 400 guilders with interest on Ghijsbert Cornelisz van Culenborch with the restriction that Wulpher would pay 150 guilders in the year of 1618 and thereafter be free of obligation. In the margin is a notation that Dirck van Cullenburch as heir of his father Gysbert van Culenburch acknowledged that the obligation on the mortgage was fully paid on Mar 5 1628 on Jan 3 1618. In the seventeenth century, a bleach camp  was a capital intensive, seasonal business which required the labor of relatively many workers. Profits were meager because the buyers of the finished product and the suppliers of raw materials such as lye were generally the same activities, and the skills and experience required of the workers was generally so high that each bleachery specialized in but one sort of material: Yarn (garenblekerij), woven cloth (lijnwaadblekerij), or clothing (klerenblekerij). In all three cases the material was first generally cooked in lye solution and later spread out on green grass for many weeks in small fields surrounding the bleach house where it was kept damp. Later, iot was cooked in a solution of wheat  meal before being again spread on the field for a lengthly period, the entire pricess requiring about three months. The consequences of this long procedure was that only wealthy people were the customers of clothing bleachers because only they could afford to part with many items of clothing for so long a time. No equipment of the bleach camp listed in the purchase document for Wolphert are given. So no indication of what type of bleachery Wolphert purchased. The bleach camp he sold in 1612 included a bleach table meaning it may have been a cloth bleach camp. Wulphert Gerritss  baker and his wife Neeltgen Jacobs contracted a mortgage with Coenraet Fransz, former mayor of the city Anersfoort, for 100 guilders at an annual interest of 6 guilders, with the house of Wulphert on the Langegracht as security, which house lay between the house of Aert van Schayck and that of Hendrickgen Speldemaeckster.

It does not appear that Wolferts endeavor as a bleacher met with great success, and this may have been caused by a general malaise in the weavers trade in Amersfoort in this period, which in turn lay on a lack of capital. Becasue Wolfert's work was dependent on this industry, he was limited as a business man by the lack of success of the parent industry on Sept 17 1618. Wolphert was appointed guardian over the five underage children of Willem Gerritsz Couwenhoven.

Wulffer Geridtz, bleacher residing by the coppelpoort and Harman Willemsz citizen of Amersfoort as "bloetvoochden" (blood guardians) of the five sons of Willem Gerridsz Couwenhoven, namely Gerridt, Willem, Jan, Harmen, and Willem the Younger, none of whom had yet reached the age of minority, made an agreement with the mother of the children Neeltgen Willemsdr the widow of Willem Gerridtsz assisted by the owner of the Cowenhoven the honorable Johan de Wijs.

This document indicated that Wolphert Gerritse had a brother Willem and that he was the tenant of the farm Couwenhoven which was owned bt Johan de Wijs. This document indicates that Wolfert is connected to the Couwenhoven by Hoogland. It is at the same time possiblethat he was also linked to the Couwnehoven near Woudenberg because he was the son of Gerrit Willemsz van Couwenhoven, but no documentation for this has not been discovered on Nov 5 1622. Beernt van Munster made a deposition under oath before the Lieutenant, the schout, and the schepenen Dam and Bronchorst at the request of the (police) officer. He stated that the previous Saturday afternoon he had caught a bucket of fish by the Copplepoort bridge and had given half of it to Wulphert the bleacher according to an agreement which they had made,  and that Beernt had caught a small number of fish thereafter. Wulpher and Harmen Teut then took these fish from Beernt, and they would not divide them with him. Wulphert took the net and tried to give it to his wife. Harmen hit Beernt in the eye with a weight in the net, but by then, it was ripped.  Beernt then went to the defense of his wife and Wulpher drew his knife and threatened him without harming him. Dirck Gerritsz, stevedore, using wellchosen words, seperated the people from each other. On Apr 1 1623, Dirch Gerrisz was heard at the request of the officer and made a similar deposition under oath on March 24 1623. Hubert Moll and his wife Geertgen Cornelis sold a bleach camp to Wulpher Gerritsz bleacher and his wife in which they had been residing. This was situated in Amersfoort outside Coppelpoort. The property description differs slightly from that given for the land transaction of 1618, but the mortgages are the same. It is likely that it is the same ground that Wulpher Gerritsz and Hubert Moll purchased then. On the date of the purchse in 1623, Wulpher Gerritss sold his property to Monsieur Jacques Chiese Cuirass (ier) of the company of his Princely Excellency (Maurits?) and the purchaser assumed the mortgages.

This is the last document pertaining to Wolpfert Gerritse that has been discovered in the archives of Amersfoort on Jun 11 1623. He was a baker and then later a bleacher (bleaching laundry on a grassfield in the sun) before 1624. He immigrated between 1624 and 1625 to New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York.  He and Neeltgen Jacobsdochter immigrated in jun 1625 to New Netherlands: or Jul 1625, with his wife and family on a ship of the Dutch West India Company which Sailed in the expedition that was comprised of the ships Mackerel, Horse, Cow, and Sheep. Wolfert returned to the Netherlands in 1629. He returned from the Netherlands on board "De Endracht" (the Unity) on May 24 1630. There exists a letter from Kiiaen van Rensselaer to Wolfert which I have to get from sources. At this time Wolfert was in the Netherlands and the had to do with terminating Wolfert's contract with van Rensselaer and mentions that Wolfert's wife is unhappy living in New Netherlands. In the letter Van Rensselaer states he would not want someone who was not happy working for him to remain in his employ under the circumstances. It was a friendly letter. According to the source there are several letters of Wolfert from Van Rensselaer. The letter above was read over the phone to me and I have yet to recieve the exact copy and don't take short hand in 1632. He "Keskateuw" located on Long Island from the Indians. Here was established the first known white settlement on Long Island. Wolphert called his "plantation" Achterveldt, shown on the Manatu Map of New Netherlandsas farm number 36 near the Indian long house to the Kestachau tribe. Wolpherts house was surrounded by palisade, was the focal point of the village of New Amersfoort, later called Flatlands on Jun 30 1636. He got "Small Civil Rights" on Apr 18 1657. WOlfert Gerritsen Van COuwenhoven was named in a suit filed by Frans Jansen regarding a dispute over a contract in which Jansen was to buy land from Wolfert. This was the first time the name Van Couwenhoven was mentioned in reference to Wolfert on Oct 20 1661.

        13.  Gerret Wolfersen³ Van Kouwenhoven (Wolphert Gerretse², Gerritt Jansz¹) was born Abt. 1610 in Amersfort, Utrecht, Netherlands, and died Abt. 1648 in Flatlands, Kings County, New York.  He married Aeltje Cornelis Cool Abt. 1635 in Flatlands, Kings County, New York, daughter of Cornelius Cool and <Unnamed>.  She was born 1620 in Gowanus, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, and died Jun 1683 in Flatlands, Kings County, New York.

Gerret born 1610 in Holland was killed by Indians in 1645 in New Amsterdam,New York. He Married Adltje Cornetius Cool in 1635, she was the daughter of Cornelius Lambertise Cool and they had 4 children. One was William Gerritse Couwenhoven born 1636 and married Altji Brinkerhoff in 1660. William's second marriage was to Jannetje Montfoort Feb.12,1665 and they had 13 children. William is my 9th great grandfather by his and Jannetje's son Albert Willemse Van Kouwenhoven born 07 December 1676.

Gerret, oldest of the three sons, settled in Midwout (Flatbush) near Achterveldt on 50 morgens of land. deeds for which are dated January 26, 1638 and September 16, 1641. In 1643, Gerret was one of a group sent to the Staats General in Holland to present the forlorn and defenseless condition of New Netherlands settlers due to Director Wilhelmus Kief's inciting war amongst the Indians. Grandsons of Gerret; Cornelius, Albert, Peter, and Jacob--settled in Monmouth County, New Jersey about 1700. Another grandson, William, remained in Flatlands.

This day, date underwritten, before me Cornelis Van Tienhoven, secretary, in the presence of the undersigned witnesses appeared Wolphert Gerritsen and Gerrit Wolpherson, as guardians of Lambert Cornelissen Cool, at the request of said Lambert Cool, have permitted him to go with his cattle to his brother in law Claes Jansen, in order to take up together some plantation or farm, and we the principals in the capacity aforesaid have consented hereto as we are bound in the place of flather and mother to promote the above named Lambert Cool's interest and we cannot percieve that he will earn anything, much less prosper so long as he remains with his father, Cornelis Lambertsen. We have therefore considered it advisable to permit him to do something for himself in company of aforesaid. Done at Fort Amersterdam the 22 of August 1639.

On March 11, 1647, Gerrit Wolphertson (Van Kouwenhoven) recieved a patent for "a certain piece of land, gouat the (Ma) Rechaweick, both the maize and woodland, on the marsh of the Gouwanus Kil, between the land Jacob Stoffelsen and Frederick Lubbertsen, extending from the aforsaid marsh till into the woods, till to the land of said Frederick, till to the land of Andries Huddle, northeast by north,  a little northerly, 148 rods behind through the woods, till to the land of Jacob stoffelsen, southeast by east 80 rods next to the land of jacob stoffelsen aforsaid, till to the aforsaid marsh, southwest a little westerly 165 rods, along the marsh to the place of beginning 60 rods, with an oblique outpoint: amounting in all to 29 morgens, 341 rods." This plot evidently fronted on the main road leading from Flatbush, through the village of Breuckelen, which was locatedat this point, to "the Ferry," and is included in lands marked as G. Martense's on Butt's Map. Wolphertsen sold this property to Nicholas Jans, baker, of New York on March 11, 1647.

Pieter, youngest son of Wolphert, became a miller and a brewer. His bewery was at what later was the corner of Pearl and William Streets, New York City, After New Amsterdam was incoporated in 1653, a court of Schout (sheriff), Burgomaster, and Schepens (sheriffs or Aldermen), was established. On February 2, 1653, Pieter and four others were appointed to sit in court from October 19, 1655 until 1660. In September, 1655, Pieter was one of three men who went among and negotiated with the marauding Indians fot the return of Christian captives, he being an interpreter of the Indian Language. In 1663, as Lieutenant, he was sent by Stuyvesant to retaliate against the Indians at Esopus (Now Kingston, New York). On March 12, 1665, he was appointed City Surveyor.

I, the undersigned Pieter Wolfertsen, hereby acknowledge for myself, mmy heirs and successors that this day, date underwritten, I have adopted, as I do hereby adopt Aeltjem Pieters van Couwenhoven, my own daughter, whom I have begottenand procreated by Maria de Truy, promising therefore that from this date I shall do by the above named, my daughter, as a god fearing father is bound and ought to do by his own legitimate daughter; therefore, I hereby discharge and release Cornelis Volckersen, husband and guardian of the aforesaid Maria de Truy, from all charges and responsibilities incidental to the bringing up of a child till she becomes of age; I, Pieter Wolphersen, promising to look after the child, to let her learn to read and to bring her up according to means.

Furthermore, if I do not beget and children by my present wife, the above named child shall be my rightful heiress and inheritrix, as if she were duly begotten in lawful wedlock, and if it happens that children are begotten by me and my wifem the above named Aeltjen Pieters shall receive, like the legitimate children on my side, a just child's portion of all such goods, means and effects as it shall please the Lord God Almighty to bestow on me. Requesting that this may have effect before all courts, I have signed this without fraud in the presence of the subscribing witnesses hereto invited, Done, the 7th day of Jan 1642.

Notes for Jacob Wolphertsen Van Kouwenhoven:

Another son, Jacob was taken into the Dutch West India Company as an assistant by Governor Van Twiller and later became a tobacco planter and brewer. In 1664 he was licensed by Governor Nichols to trade in his sloop with the Indians along the Hudson River. Jacob marrried Hester Jansen in Amsterdam, Holland, on December 1, 1636, and they were the parents of six children. On March 4, 1643, Jacob and David de Vries volunteered to go out of Fort Amsterdam to the Rockaway Convention to spend the night with the Indians to make peace. In 1649 and 1650 under Pieter Stuyvesant, Jacob was a member of the Court of Arbitrators. On June 26, 1649, Jacob was sent to Holland as one of three men to represent New Netherlands at the Hague. On July 3 1643, the West India Company granted land to Jacob in Brooklyn on the East River including what is now the New York Navy Yard, City Park and the Fifth Ward.

On the earliest survivig list of members of the Dutch Reformed Church of Brooklyn, Sep 12, 1660, appear the names of Willem Gerritse Van Couwenhoven, his first wife, and her parents. He was

Magistrate of Brooklyn 1661, 1662, and 1664. Willem Gerretse, on behalf of his first wife, was one of the three heirs to the Brooklyn grant of his father-in-law, Joris Dicksen Brinckerhoff, and joined with the other heirs in selling this property on January 16, 1661. He was Signed a petition on May 25, 1662 in 1662 schepen of Brooklyn,,, New York. He was deacon in 1663 Dutch Reformed Church, Breukelen, Kings County, New York. His name apears on the patent of Flatland, 1667 and he apparently removed there about that time. [He was an Elder of the Reformed Dutch church at Flatlands in 1677. He

signed the oath of allegiance at some time between Sep 26-30, 1687 being called a resident of "fflackland" and native born. The Records of th Brick Church, Marlborough, Monmouth Co., NJ, originally known as the Reformed Church of Freehold of the Navasink, begin in 1709 and show that in that year seven children of Willem Gerretse were already members of that congregation namely, Cornelis, Pieter, Albert, Jan, Jacob, Neeltje (Nelke), and Sara. In 1717, two other children appear as members, Annetje (Autie) and Jacomina (Jockamiinke). It was not until 1721 that the chuch shows as members "Willem Ger Kowvenhoven and his wife," and since the wife, Jannetje (Janneke), appears alone on the list in 1723, it seems possible that Willem Gerretse died between 1721 and 1723. He sold his plantation in Brooklyn to his son William and moved to Monmouth County, NJ in November, 1709. The existence of the original Bible of Willem Gerrete, with his own record of his marriages and the births of his children, states that he married "Altieu Yoris" in the year 1660. She was Altje, daughter of Joris Dickerson Brinckerhoff, and was the widow of Cornelis Mattys (Mathiews). She died on June 3, 1663, and Willem Gerretse married secondly, on February 12, 1665, "Jannetie Peters," who was Jannetje, daughter of Peter Monfort. She was baptized as Jannetje on May 8, 1646, in the D. R. Church of New Amsterdam.

Judge William Hepburn was born in Ireland and came to this country when he was about twenty years old and settled in the West Branch Valley shortly afterwards. He was twice married and was the father of nineteen children. His first wife was Crecy Covenhoven, a sister of the famous scout, Robert Covenhoven, and his second wife was Elizabeth Huston, a sister of Charles Huston, who afterwards became a judge of the Supreme Court of the state. Judge Hepburn was a man of very considerable ability and prominence and left a very decided influence for good on the infant community. He died June 25, 1821, aged sixty-eight years, in the old house which he built at the foot of Park Street.

Francis C. Campbell, who came to Williamsport in 1812, at the age of 25, stood high as a lawyer and was a. successful practitioner. He married a daughter of Judge William Hepburn and his family became a very influential one in the affairs of the county.

Hepburn Township was erected in 1804 and was named in honor of William Hepburn, who had so much to do with having Lycoming established as a separate county in 1795. It is the thirty-fifth in size and has an area of 8,320 acres. Copper ore and Galena have been found at some places, but not in sufficient quantities to be of commercial value. Most of the land is rolling except in the northern part, where it is mountainous. Lycoming Creek washes its western border and Mill Run flows through a portion of it. There is another small stream which empties into Lycoming Creek known as Long Run. The land is fertile and there are many good farms. It is almost wholly an agricultural section.

Ammunition was hard to get, almost  impossible sometimes to procure, which may account for Fort Freeland being so short that the women had to run up their spoon and "pewter" plates, but one would suppose, if there was any head to the garrison after the

attack of a few days before, when their loss was three killed and two captured, he would have caused them to be better prepared for another attack.

MASSACRE AT WYOMING FOLLOWED BY "THE GREAT RUNAWAY" ON JULY 5, 1778

 Robert Covenhoven wrote: "I took my family safely to Sunbury and came back

in a keel-boat to secure my furniture.  Just as I rounded a point above

Deerstown (now Lewisburg) I met the whole convoy from all the forts above.

Such a sight I never saw in all my life.  Boats, canoes, hogtroughs, rafts

hastily made of dry sticks, every sort of floating article had been put in

requisition, and was crowded with women, children and plunder.  there were

several hundred people in all.

     "Whenever an obstruction occurred at any shoal or ripple, the women would

leap out into the water and put their shoulders to the boat or raft, and

launch it again into deep water.  The men of the settlement came down in

single file, on each side of the river to guard the women and children.  The

whole convoy arrived safely at Sunbury, leaving the entire range of farms

along the West Branch to the ravages of the indians. "

    Several persons are known to have been killed by the indians during the

"Great Runaway,"  but it remains a most remarkable fact that almost the entire

population moved from the settlements and for several days were in the open

along the river and yet but few were killed.
