  • Information from Jeanie Sharp Nance file: John was governor of Nevada in the early 1900s. The town of Sparks, Nevada is named after him. Sparks became a large man physically. Estimates of his height vary from six feet, two inches, to six feet, five inches, and apparently he had great muscular strength as well. A contemporary described him as "like a grizzly bear in strength." He was also described as "warm and friendly," "courageous and fearless," "sincere and honest," and "gentle and generous." Apparently he was also a "joiner," and he held memberships in the Odd Fellows, Masons, Elks, and Eagles. He was also a Baptist. In 1958, Sparks was honored by the Oklahoma Western Hall of Fame for his role as a cattleman and a public official. A plaque testifying to his place of leadership in the cattle industry was placed on the wall of the Western Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. Cited were: (1 ) his ownership of one of the biggest ranches in the west; (2) his two elections to the position of governor of Nevada; and (3) his steadying influence in the fight between federal and state governments over their respective roles in the use of western land. from chronic Bright's Disease A tall, white marble shaft with a bronze bust of him on the top was erected at his grave in the Masonic Memorial Cemetery in Reno. The bust was sculptured by Sparks's daughter, Maud (Sparks) McKenzie. CSA; served in Capt. J. M. Callan's Company,Texas Frontier Regiment
