U.S. Marine Corps Combat Veteran - World War II. Boot Camp at Parris Island, SC. Served with Co. G, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division in the South Pacific Campaigns. Participated in assault raids at Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. Wounded on Saipan, and again on Iwo Jima. Enlisted at Philadelphia on the 6th day of January 1942 for four years. At enlistment, was 71 1/2 inches tall, brown eyes, brown hair, ruddy complexion. At time of discharge was a Corporal (Temp.). Service included south and central Pacific area from 13 January 1944 to 25 March 1945; Marshall Islands, Hawaii Islands, Saipan Marianas Islands, Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands. Wounded in action at Saipan on 15 June 1944, and at Iwo Jima on 24 February 1945. Participated in action against Japanese enemy forces at Roi and Namur, Kwajalien Atoll, Marshall Islands 15 June 1944, Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands from 19 February to 24 February 1945.

After high school, he got a job for the Pennsylvania Railroad at the Enola Yards in Harrisburg. This was in 1941. His job was with the "Modoc Gang". He was on the crew that operated the "steam jennie", and they were responsible for cleaning the engines between runs. He worked there for about three months and then quit. He went to Philadelphia and went to work for Philco Radio, building radio cabinets. In October 1941, he tried to join the Marine Corps, but was rejected due to his bad teeth. He spent the next few months getting his teeth fixed, and tried again. He reported to Parris Island on 6 June 1942.
They traveled south by train to Port Royal, debarked and were transported to the island by barge. At that time, there was no bridge.

3. Robbie Sue HILTON was born 1 on May 17 1924 in Bethune, Kershaw, SC. She died on Jul 17 2001 in Atlanta, Dekalb, GA. She was buried on Jul 21 2001 in Gwinnett Mem Park, Lawrenceville, Gwinnett, GA. [Parents]

According to information from her, her mother had told her that she was born on a Saturday afternoon, about 4:30, during a very heavy rainstorm.
Following graduation from high school, she took a war-time job with the post office in Charleston, SC. There, she met and later married Roberson William Hughes.
Death caused by a sudden heart attack. She was 77 years, 2 months and 0 days old at the time of death.
