First of the surname to be born in County Down. Spent his life as a tenant farmer, taking over the farm from his father, who had migrated into the area from Drogheda. As of the mid-1950's, it was noted that the family stone cottage was still standing, having been remodeled, and was still being occupied by the current farmers on that land. He was a well-to-do tenant farmer, leasing 72 acres from his proprietor, John Newell, in the townland of Kinghill, about four miles east of Rathfriland on the Hilltown - Downpatrick road. In John's later years, his son Samuel apparently took over operation of the lease, as evidence by his semi-annual payments. Samuel, also in 1792, wrote his brother in South Carolina a letter in the name of, but without the signature of, their father. This was three years before the father's death.
