Francis Howard Bickerton (1889-1954)

Frank Bickerton was an adventurer of the early 20th Century. A book written by Stephen Haddelsey called "Born Adventurer: The Life Of Frank Bickerton Antarctic Pioneer" gives a very interesting and detailed account of his life. I will just give a brief description of his family history. He was born in Oxford on the 15th of January 1889. His parents were Joseph Jones Bickerton (Town Clerk) and Eliza. Joseph was born in Oxford in about 1840. His parents were Joseph Bickerton (Tobacconist) and Charlotte Williams. Joseph senior was born in Bangor, Flintshire on the 31st October 1806. His parents were Joseph Bickerton and Jane.
Admiral Sir Richard Bickerton (1759-1832)
Admiral Sir Richard Hussey-Bickerton, 2nd Bt. was born on 11 October 1759 in Southampton, Hampshire, England. He was the son of Vice-Admiral Sir Richard Bickerton, 1st Bt. (see below) and Mary Anne Hussey. He married Anne Athill, daughter of James Athill, on 25 September 1792 in Antigua. He died on 9 February 1832 at age 72 in The Circus, Bath, Somerset, England, without children. He was buried on 16 February 1832 in Bath Abbey, Bath, Somerset, England. His will was probated in August 1832.

Admiral Sir Richard Hussey-Bickerton, 2nd Bt. was baptised with the name of Richard Bickerton. He gained the rank of Cadet in 1771 in the service of the Royal Navy. He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1777. He gained the rank of Commander in 1779. He gained the rank of action off Martinique on 29 May 1781. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baronet Bickerton on 25 February 1792. He gained the rank of Rear-Admiral in 1799. He was awarded the decoration of the Order of the Crescent of Turkey on 8 October 1801. Between 1804 and 1805 he was second in command under Nelson. He held the office of M.P. for Poole between 1807 and 1812. He gained the rank of Admiral in 1810. He was Commander-in-Chief of the Portsmouth between 1812 and 1814. He was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) on 2 January 1815. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1818 in the service of the Marines. He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.).On 16 May 1823 his name was legally changed to Richard Hussey-Bickerton by Royal Licence. He gained the rank of General in June 1830 in the service of the Marines. He lived in Upwood, England.On his death, his baronetcy became extinct.

Vice-Admiral Sir Richard Bickerton (1727-1792)
Vice-Admiral Sir Richard Bickerton, 1st Bt. was born on 23 June 1727. He was the son of Lieutenant Henry Bickerton (died 1746) and Mary Dowdal. He was baptised on 4 July 1727 in St. Mary Magdalen, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England. He married Mary Anne Hussey, daughter of Thomas Hussey, on 2 January 1758 in St. Margaret's Church, Westminster, London, England. He died on 25 February 1792 at age 64, from apoplexy. His will (dated 9 August 1780) was probated on 19 January 1793.

Vice-Admiral Sir Richard Bickerton, 1st Bt. was educated in Westminster School, Westminster, London, England. He gained the rank of Cadet in 1739 in the service of the Royal Navy. He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1746. He gained the rank of Captain. He was invested as a Knight on 24 June 1773 for steering the King's barge at a naval review off Plymouth. He was created 1st Baronet Bickerton [Great Britain] on 29 May 1778. He fought in the second relief of Gibraltar in 1781. He was Commander of the East Indies between 1782 and 1784. He was Commander-in-Chief of the Leeward Islands between 1786 and 1787. He gained the rank of Rear-Admiral of the White in 1787. He gained the rank of Vice-Admiral. He was Port-Admiral of the Plymouth in 1792.
