THIS INFORMATION IS MORE COMPLETE THAN IT WAS. PLEASE EMAIL ME WITH MORE DETAILS OF YOUR CONNECTION AND I CAN HELP YOU FIND OTHER INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BRANCH OF THE GRAVES TREE.

Generation No. 1

1. DANIEL1 GRAVES was born in New York around 1794. He married MARY "POLLY" FERGUSON. She was born in Vermont.

(page 3)

*Found via the Early American Newspapers database by Newsbank at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

I believe I have found the couple in Jefferson County, New York in 1840. There are many commonly interchanged spellings in this family. For example, one of the sons is named Percy, but was called

Pierce. Sheldon Hawley (the official spelling of his name) was called "Hallie" and hence the misspelling of the name occurred.  In the family in St. Lawrence County, Mary is listed as Polly, a common

nickname of the time.

In the 1850 census, it gives an age for Daniel of 56, putting him into the expected timeframe of being born sometime around 1794.

Notes for DANIEL GRAVES:

Children of DANIEL GRAVES and MARY FERGUSON are:

LEWIS GRAVES, b.  1838 in New York. *I think I may have found a death record for him, but am not sure about it. Death Date: March 23, 1890 Bridgehampton, Sanilac County, Michigan. Age 51, Married. This migration pattern would make sense, but without further proof...

           i.  ELIZABETH "BETSY"2 GRAVES, m. X INGERSOLL OR HALL; b. 1831. This information is provided by Ken Graves and Rick of the Ingersoll Association.

ii.  JESS GRAVES. Jess Graves might have been found. In 1833 there is a Jess Graves who buys land in Oakland County, Michigan. However, he is not in Michigan in 1830 or 1840.

Perhaps he comes to claim it in 1850, or he never claims it. I am still not sure.

iii.  PITTMAN GRAVES. I have found a solitary census that has a Pitman Graves with a birthdate in 1828 in Iowa in 1870. I have not yet found any additional information about this person.

iv.  REBECCA GRAVES, m. LAKESON. Rebecca is not listed with the family in 1850. She may have been oldest and married by then. Much more research is needed.

2.        v.  ENOCH GRAVES, b. 1824; d. 22 May 1904.

3.       vi.  JOHN GRAVES, was born 29 January 1815, and died 07 August 1866 in Sanilac, Michigan.  He married REBECCA.  She was born 1838, and died 1889.

Child of JOHN GRAVES and REBECCA is:

           i.  LEVI3 GRAVES, b. 1838, died 27 March 1889 in Bridgehampton, Sanilac County, Michigan

4.      vii.  HEZEKIAH GRAVES, b. 01 January 1819, Canada West (Ontario); d. 22 September 1892, Port Sanilac, Sanilac County, Michigan.

Please visit Hezekiah's unique website: Hezekiah Graves and Harriet Hart.

Interested in this family? You can also check out the website of Roger Allen Graves.

5.     viii.  SHELDON HALL GRAVES, b. 26 August 1828, Delaware, Middlesex Bay County, Ontario, Canada; d. 01 July 1895, Port Sanilac, Sanilac County, Michigan.

Please go to Sheldon's unique website: Sheldon Hall Graves, Hannah Jeffry and Lemira Martin

2nd GENERATION
Children of Daniel - Enoch, Hazelton, Sheldon Hawley, Hezekiah

Children of Rachel

2.  ENOCH2 GRAVES (DANIEL1) was born 1810 March 1824, and died 22 May 1904.  He married RACHEL SIPES, who was previously married to PETER BUCKENDALE.

Notes for RACHEL SIPES:

I operated under the assumption that her last name was Shanks, for a great deal of time. There may be something still to that.

At first I thought she was the Rachel Sipes who married Peter Buckendale the Younger of Markham, Ontario. That Rachel Sipes was listed as dying - however, I could totally see that a husband wouldn't want to admit that his wife ran away and said she died instead. BUT, some new information made me reconsider this:

18 November 1846, page 79, Gore District marriage records of Rev. Robert Lindsay, Presbyterian Church:

Thomas GRAVES, Waterloo, to Rachel SIPES, Blenheim. Wit: Thomas Linton, M. McRay.

Could I have been wrong all along about the Buckendale-Sipes relationship? Could it be Rachel Sipes is only a relation? And who is Thomas Graves/Greaves of Waterloo? Is he a relation of Enoch?

It gets murkier:

016215-00 (Waterloo Co) John MCCARTHY, 37, brakesman, Canada, Toronto, s/o Daniel MCCARTHY & Henora SHUWAY (?) married Margaret Helen LINTON, 28, Waterloo, Galt, d/o Walter LINTON & Helen GREAVES, witn: Thomas LINTON of Waterloo Twp & Robert WILSON of North Dumfries, 27 June 1900 in Galt.

Who are the Lintons? Is Helen Greaves a relation of Thomas Graves/Greaves (its Greaves in the actual record)? How do they fit into the family? Is the Thomas Linton of Waterloo the same guy?

The next record next to the Graves marriage is transcribed:

Nov. 17 Levi SHIRK, Waterloo, to Catherine SHUPE, Wilmot. Wit: Henry Sipes, Joseph Lindsay.

(This is a still taken from my digital camera filming my viewing of microfilm records at my local FHC. Since I can't post video here, this will have to do.)

These are the two records close up. To me it looks like Henry Sipes and Joe Lindsay might have witnessed two marriages. But who is Henry Sipes? The mystery continues to thicken. Is Thomas and Enoch Graves the same person? The marriage date is correct for the family. Is Thomas a previously unknown brother to the family who died and Enoch married his wife? Also a possibility. Is Enoch "Enoch Thomas" or "Thomas Enoch"? Also a possibility. Was Enoch illegally married to someone else at the time? Also a possibility - things weren't too formal in the recording area and some people didn't want them that way during that time period. We may never know the truth, but I've made it my goal to try and find a researcher or family member who has heard of "Thomas Graves of Waterloo, Ontario" or "Thomas Greaves of Waterloo, Ontario".

Notes for ENOCH GRAVES:

1861 ALPHABETICAL LIST OF THE RESIDENTS OF THE TOWNSHIP (Blenheim North)

Greaves, Enoch        Con. 8     Lot 6

From Nancy Waters: They lived on Graves Ranch,  <----Is the below census entry the location of "Graves Ranch"?---->

In 1861, the family is found in the Nominal/Agricultural Census of Ontario, with the misspelled last name of Greaves:

Concession 8, Lot 6 of Blenheim Twp, Oxford County, Ontario.

Enoch, age 37, born in USA

Rachel, age 24, born in Canada

Hezekiah, age 10, born in Canada

Carleton, age 8, born in Canada

Marshall, age 6, born in Canada

Sheldon, age 3, born in Canada

Daniel, age 2, born in Canada

Not found in 1870 MI census, also not found in 1880 US Census or 1881 Canadian Census. Since Daniel's obituary says they immigrated in 1871, that would explain the missing of the 1870/1871

censuses - but how to explain the missing 1880/1??? -- Problem solved. The 1880 Census for Sanilac County is missing approximately 1600 individuals - the approximate amount of people in

Bridgehampton Township. This has been verified with images/information from Genealogy.com, Familysearch.org and Ancestry.com that these images are truly missing.

In 1871, Enoch is found in the Lovell's Province of Ontario Director for 1871 (Jan 1871), on page 345:

In 1881, Enoch and Rachel are listed as living in Bridgehampton Township, Sanilac County, Michigan (on their daughter's death certificate).

iv.  HEISIKIAH GRAVES1, b, app. 1872; It is supposed that he died in one of the Huron County Fires.

Notes for HEISIKIAH GRAVES:

Hesikiah or Hesachiah in the 1884 census entry, could not have died in the major set of fires. Will have to check the 1894 census of Huron County to see if he lives there and

perhaps died in a minor fire.

In the 1884 census he is mentioned with having ulcers on his legs --- was he one of the first diabetics in the family?!?

in Alpena, Michigan5. John and Mary are supposedly buried in Alpena.

Notes for HAZELTON JOHN GRAVES:

"At sea" is sort of a misnomer. Hazelton was most probably born during one of the many trips to family made between Canada and the US - hence, he wasn't really a citizen of either until some time later in his life. I like to joke that he was born "at lake", since it was extremely likely that he was born on a boat on one of the Great Lakes. It does make for a funny family story, though!
