Obituary

Funeral services for James Graves, 80 year old Custer Township farmer, are to be held Thursday at 2:00 pm from the Latter Day Saints church at McGregor with Elder William Grice officiating. Burial is to be made in Downing Cemetery.

Mr. Graves, who had lived for 45 years on the farm where he died Sunday, was born in Mt. Bridges, Canada, in 1856 and came to Michigan with his parents at the age of 9 years.

Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Levenia Nichol Graves, whom he married in 1877; five sons, Edward, Harley, Eugene, and Victor, all of Custer Township and Emery of Sandusky; three daughters, Mrs. Amy Phillips, Leonard, Michigan; Mrs. Harry McNeal, Oxford and Mrs. F. O'Connell of Midland, 24 grand children and 12 great grandchildren.

McGregor Pioneer Dies

At Daughters Home

McGregor - Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 pm from the McGregor Latter Day Saints church for Mrs. James Graves, 92, who died Wednesday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nora O'Connell, of McGregor. Elder Grant McNeil of Oxford will officiate. Burial will be in Downing Cemetery.

Lavinia Nichol was born August 1, 1858 in Bridgehampton township and had been a resident of the county all her life. She married James Graves of McGregor on January 22, 1876. Mr. Graves died on Dec 20th, 1936. She was a member of the McGregor L.D.S. church.

She is survived by five sons, Edwin and Emery Graves, McGregor; Harley and Victor Graves, Sandusky; Eugene Graves of Deckerville; three daughters, Mrs. Amy Phillips, Leonard; Harriet McNeil, Oxford; Mrs. Nora O'Connell, McGregor; 25 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. One daughter, Grace, died in 1911.

Sandusky Lady Dies At Son's Home

Funeral services were held Monday at 2:00 pm from the Custer Methodist Church for Addie Jane Graves, 82, who died Friday after a brief illness at the home of her son, Lloyd Graves, Sandusky. Rev William Snyder, pastor of the church officiated. burial was made in Downing Cemetery, Deckerville.

Addie Jane Sweet was born November 3, 1866 in Ontario, Canada and married Herbert A Graves on September 11, 1887. Mr. Graves died December 8, 1923.

She is survived by two sons, Lloyd Graves, Sandusky; Alvy Graves, Detroit; four daughters, Mrs. Albert C. Rich, Sandusky; Mrs. George Bradley, Port Huron; Mrs. Milo Nichol, Brown City; Mrs. Carl McCullum, Detroit; two brothers, Levi Sweet, Glennie; Albert Sweet, Deckerville; 24 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

She was a very caring and loving person. After the death of "Eddie", she lived alone on her small farm near Deckerville, until the last few years, which were spent in a nursing home. Her grandson George purchased the old farm from the estate.

Minnie May Graves, 91, of East Downington Road, died Saturday, July 29, 1989 in Sanilac Medical Care Facility.

She was born May 13, 1898 in Sanilac County. She married James Emery Graves August 5, 1915 in Deckerville. He died June 8, 1976.

Mrs. Graves was a homemaker and a member of the Sandusky R.I.D.S. Church.

She is survived by two sons, Burton and Harold Graves, four daughters, Mrs. Lorn (Marian) Smith, Mrs. Gerald (Verna) Keys, Mrs. Lovel (Doris) Elsholz, and Mrs. Jack (Beulah) Wilkins, all of Sandusky; 19 grandchildren, 37 greatgrandchildren, 10 great great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Edith Stoutenberg of Sandusky. She was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Graves and three brother, John, Albert and Frank Markey.

Services were held Monday in the Hacker Funeral Parlor in Sandusky.

Her grandson, Elder Harlow Elsholz officiated. Burial was in the Downing Cemetery in Deckerville.

Memorials may be made to the Sandusky R.I.D.S.

Sandusky- Harley Robert Graves, 88, of 2431 North Gates Road, Sandusky, died Monday, March 18, 1985 at the Deckerville Community Hospital.

He was born April 21, 1896 in Sanilac County. He married Norma Miller.

He was a Sandusky are farmer all his life.

He is survived by his wife, Norma; one son, Robert Graves, two daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Grace) Lentner, Nancy Quandy, all of Sandusky. Four grandchildren, James, Diane, William Lentner, Kristy Quandt, one brother, Victor, Sandusky.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Emery, Edwin, Eugene Graves, four sisters, Amy Phillips, Harriet McNeil, Nora O'Connell, Grace Graves.

Services will be held Thursday, March 21, 1985 at 11:00 am at the Hacker Funeral Parlors. Rev. William Stoliker, Deckerville will be officiating. Burial will be in Downing Cemetery.

Custer Lady Succumbs at Ann Arbor

Funeral services were held on Thursday at 2:00 pm from the Deckerville Methodist church for Mrs. Harley Graves, 46, who died Monday in University hospital, Ann Arbor. Rev. Robert McCleary, pastor of the Carsonville Methodist Church, officiated. Burial was made in Downing Cemetery, Deckerville.

Edna Wallace was born January 21st, 1894, in Bridgehampton township and is the daughter of Charles Wallace, of Carsonville. She married Harley Graves of Custer Township, June 21st, 1934 where she resided until her recent demise. She graduated from Carsonville High School and Michigan State Normal School at Ypsilanti and taught school for many years in the county. She was elected Sanilac county school examiner and served in this position for six years.

She is survived by her husband, Mr. Graves, of Custer Township; her father, Charles Wallace, Carsonville, three sisters, Mrs. Vernon Trigger, Springfield, Mass., Miss Iva Wallace, Carsonville, and Mrs. George Walker of Carsonville, three brothers, Guy Wallace, Mansfield, Ohio, Clifford and Frank Wallace, of Carsonville.

Sandusky - Victor R. Graves, 94, died Tuesday May 6, 1997 at the Sanilac Medical Care Facility in Sandusky.

He was born March 12, 1903, in Sandusky, to the late James and Lavina (Nichol) Graves. He married Gladys Pearl Green on April 20, 1929 in Sandusky. She died Jan 17, 1972.

Mr. Graves was a lifelong area farmer. He was a member of the Sandusky R.L.D.S. Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Virginia and Clarence Henry of Deckerville and Joyce and Bruce Germain of Kalkaska; son Vernon and Evelyn Graves of Westland; five grandchildren, ten greatgrandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by son, Carl Graves, daughter, Marvell Graves, four sisters: Amy Phillips, Nora O'Connel, Harriett McNeil, and Grace Graves; four brothers, Harley, Emory, Eugene, and Eddie Graves.

Visitation was Wed 7-9 pm and Thurs 2-9 pm in the Hacker Funeral Parlors of Sandusky.

Funeral Services were Fri, May 9 at 1 pm in the Hacker Funeral Parlors in Sandusky. Elder Ken Diem of Carsonville officiated.

Burial was in the Downing Cemetery in Deckerville.
