He married ADALAIDE SMITH 6 August 1883 in St John, Birmingham., daughter of WILLIAM SMITH. She was born 2 December 1866 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire., and died 5 July 1908 in Adelaide Hospital, Adalaide, South Australia..

Note the descendants of this Edward Cookes were researched by Pam Kelly in Australia

Notes for EDWARD COOKES:- He was christened in St. Thomas Church, Birmingham.

On speaking with Sid Cookes on the 3rd. May, 1995, he feels that his Grandparents met on the ship coming out to Australia from England. He was brought out by Simpsons to work as a craftsman in their factory in Adelaide. (possibly as a Tinsmith.) The boat they came out in landed

in Melbourne and was most likely around 1880. He has a copy of his parents Marriage Certificate: Edward Cookes and Nellie Wiles. The marriage date was 13th April, 1910 and was held at Edward's mothers home at Thebarton. This would have been Edward & Adelaide's (my great

Grandparents). Sid's mother ( Nellie) was 29 & his father (Edward) was 23 when they married. When Sid was born (October, 1919) his father was 33. Sid's mother (Nellie Wiles) was born in Melbourne in March, 1881. He feels his Grandmother became pregnant on the ship on the voyage from England, and that they would have been married soon after arriving, which is why he feels it was approx. 1880

13Jul1995

I went to the Unley Reference Library, and discovered the death certificate for Edward Cookes. At the time of his death, he was living at Darcy St., Medindie Gardens. This should in fact be D'erlanger Ave. He was 66 years old when he died, and had been a resident of the Commonwealth of Australia for 41 years, which means he must have come out to Australia in 1885. He was 23 years old, when he married, so he must have married Adelaide Smith approx. 1882. The number of living children was at the time of his death - 2 Female, and 2 Male, which is

correct. He died at the Adelaide Hospital, and the cause of death was Appendicitis, 8 days Peritonitis and Toxemia.

Death Certificate of Adelaide Cookes:

She died on the 5th. July, 1908. She was 55 years old at the time of her death, which means that she was born around 1853. She was the wife of Edward Cookes, who was a labourer. They resided at Osmond St., Adelaide at the time of her death. She was born in West Bromwich, England. The length of time, she had resided in Australia for, was 24 years, meaning she would have arrived here in approx. 1884 - 1885. Her age at the time of her marriage was 30 years. She would therefore been married in 1883. The number of children living at the time of her death was 2 Male and 2 Female. She was known for most of her life as Nellie Bremner. Her correct Christian name was only discovered on viewing her birth certificate at the Unley Reference Library on 5th. July, 1997. She was born at her parents residence in Market St., Adelaide. Her second name Ashley was given to her as it was her father Edward Cookes's sisters name. Ashley Cookes married Walter William Smith who was Ada Smith's (Grandma's mother) brother. Grandma had 5 cousins. 3 sisters and 2 brothers. Their surname was Smith. That is, the sister's maiden name was Smith. Their father was Adelaide Smith's brother, Walter William. This has been confirmed in the Adelaide Birth Register just released. This details all births for South Australia between 1842 and 1906. The cousins Christian names are as follows:

Her date of death was 10th. May,1958.Her married name was Webb.

Jane ( her married name was Champion).

Alfred born 10th. Dec., 1891( he married Dorrie) Other brother's name unknown.

Charles born 11th. July, 1886.

She described her daughter Joyce, "she is like salt - in everything."

Whilst living at Hardys Road, George's wife Billy came and stayed from Melbourne.

Nell and her brother Frank used to perform in halls in a vaudeville type act.

She spent the early years of her life living around the city and North Adelaide area. She was married in Sydney, but am unable to establish where she lived between 1916 and 1920. When her husband returned from the war, they bought a house in D'erlanger Ave., Medindie Park. They lived there for 12 years. Her brother Frank and Vera used to visit. George used to come around for tea on Saturday nights, and there would be arguments about the local football. She took the children and left the marriage in 1932.

Mum went to hospital with Diphtheria, when she was 5. Her grandfather said good bye, but he had tears in his eyes, as he was sure that she was going to die. Instead, he died, whilst she was in hospital. He was blind for many years, and Mum can remember taking him to the barbers to have his hair cut.

Died at 10-15am, 11th. October, 1999 in Oaklands Residential Care Facility, Oaklands Park, South Australia. Funeral conducted at 12-30pm, 15th October, 1999 at Heysen Chapel, Centennial Park. Ashes to be placed in the gardens at St. Marys Anglican Church, South Road, St. Marys.

Notes for ARTHUR WILLIAM COOPER:

He was a member of the 2nd./27th. Scottish Regiment. This was formed in 1912. Its headquarters was Torrens Training Depot, Adelaide. Uniform:

Bonnet - blue with diced border, Tartan MacKenzie, Hose red and white.

Regimental marches: British Grenadiers, The Spring of Shillelagh.

Regimental motto: Primus Inter Pares - first among equals.

Allied Regiment: The Seaforth Highlanders.

War Service: By early September 1942, the Japanese had landed at Gona on the north coast of Papua, pushing the outnumbered Australians of Maroubra Force to the village of Efogi. The 2/27th Battalion was immediately ordered into a gruelling forced march along the Kokoda Trail to Brigade Hill. On Tuesday, September 8th, 1942, with the worn and greatly reduced 2/14th and 2/16th battalions to the rear of Brigade Hill, the Japanese repeatedly attacked the 2/27th on Mission Ridge. Outrnaged, outgunned and outnumbered, and suffering from severe heat, the battalion evacuated its wounded under heavy fire, coped with a water shortage and held its ground. The 2/27th was subsequently forced to take to the jungle with the intention of regaining the trail at the village of Menari. Encumbered by 16 stretcher cases - from all three units - the battalion was forced to regain its lines via a 14 day-trek through some of the toughest terrain in the world. On November 28, 1942, the 2/27th arrived at Gona with 22 officers and 301 other ranks. The unit suffered heavy losses in desperate attacks into enfiladed Japanese machine-gun fire.

He was awarded life membership of the South Australian National Football League Umpires Association on 23rd. June, 1975, and also of the South Australian Cricket Umpires' Association on 14th. April, 1983.

I remember spending many of my teenage hours with Dad, watching him umpire games of cricket, and also between the goal posts at football matches. He would always rib me if his beloved Blues managed to beat my Magpies. In those days this used to occur more than it does today.

Dad died at 3 pm, 28th. August, 1997. His funeral was held at the Heysen Chapel, Centennial Park and was at 10-30 am, 2nd. September, 1997.

His ashes are held at Centennial Park Cemetery in RSL Wall No. 129, Row A, Niche 2.
