The Sommers family name is also spelled Somer and Somers on some of the German records.
Frederick Adam Somer, his wife Rosine Elise Schult, and their young son Frederick Louis emigrated to the United States from Wismar, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany. They spent about 3 years in the Joliet, Illinois area where a second son John was born, then left for Minnesota in 1855, settling on land south of Northfield in Rice County.
Some time after 1855 and following the death of his wife, Rosine's father Christian Schult and her sisters Lisette and Sophie joined Frederick and Rosine in Minnesota.
Lisette married Joseph Everet and lived for a time in Rice County, later moving to Renville County, Minnesota.
Sophie married Jacob Glor and remained in Rice County.
These two marriages took place at the Frederick and Rosine Sommers home on August 12, 1862.
A Sommers history was published in 1955 by a granddaughter, Gladys Benz,
for the Centennial Reunion held on the original family farm in Rice County.
