Jochim and Henriette's Family

Carl Jochim Jacob Badten (Jochim) was born in Schmarl, near the large city of Rostock, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, in 1821. His family moved to Lütten Klein between 1825 and 1827, and lived there at least until 1842.

Catharina Maria Christiane Henriette Stoll (Henriette) was born in nearby Groß Klein in 1822. In 1848, Henriette married Jochim, in her home village. Their first child, Catharina Wilhelmina Sophia Lisette (Wilhemina) was born less than two months later, also in Groß Klein. From 1851 on, the family lived in Warnemünde. Their next two children were twins - August Carl Heinrich (Heinrich) and Peder Ernst Magnus (Ernst), born in 1851. Johann Carl Adolph Richard was born in 1863. On January 5, 1865, father Jochim died of Pneumonia. 15 days later, their 21-month old Johann Carl Adolph Richard also died. Jochim's fifth child, Henriette Lisette Johanna was born four months after he died, but she died after another four months.

Based on the 1867 census, Henriette, her twin sons (then 16 years old), and daughter Wilhelmina (then 19 years old) were living in Warnemünde. Based on church records, it appears that both Henriette and her daughter were still alive in 1875, but we don't know what happened to them after that point. It seems likely that Henriette lived until about 1883, when her first son emigrated to the United States. Family legend says that the twin boys left a sister in Warnemünde, so it seems likely that Wilhelmine married and stayed in the Warnemünde area.

Ernst married Henriette Albertina Rose (Albertina) on January 10, 1880, and had two children in the Rostock area before emigrating about 1883. While he may have spent some time in Wisconsin (it seems likely), by their third child in May, 1885, they had settled in Vernon, South Dakota.

His twin brother Heinrich emigrated about 1886. In Wisconsin, Heinrich (Henry) married Albertine Karoline Augustine Rose - first cousin to Ernst's Albertina. According to Henry's obituary, he spent his boyhood and youth as a seaman, at first serving aboard merchant ships and later entering the service on a battleship. He spent 14 years on various ships of the high seas, sailing under both the German and English flags. During this time he visited many foreign countries.
