Borden Springs School House
Borden Springs, Alabama
Date Built: Unknown
The school was there in 1958 when I visited class with my uncle Dale
who attended there. My grandmother Christine Lorren drove a/the school
bus
(see photo below), and I remember riding the school bus with her on
many
mornings. Once at the school, I was allowed to roam freely...I
loved recess time when my uncle Dale and Roy and Troy Beechum would gather
in the school yard to shoot marbles - how I, a silly little girl, WANTED
to have my own marbles! I never did get the marbles, but I did get
a whole bunch of memories.
Nina (Bischoff) Friend wrote, "....My
sister (Donna Bischoff) does have an old school annual somewhere in her
attic of the school in Borden. I think I might have been in the 2nd
or 3rd grade and Mrs. ENGLAND was our teacher. This was a 3 room
school house that I always had hopes that someone would restore and maybe
make a house or something out of it but instead it was torn down. There
are pictures of the Beecham twins playing marbles (my
note: I have a photo of them and my uncle playing marbles in front of the
school that I need to scan and put up), of the 4H girls and I guess
you know 4H was a big thing back then...." (see photo
below)
Donna Bischoff Bass has been wonderful in sending a lot of information my way. She wrote in email this evening (June 16, 2002), "Mom stated the school house that we have a picture of is the second school. The first burned! It was built on the area. Mom taught at the first school at the age of 16. She went to Heflin and was given a paper to substitute when a teacher was out. Mom taught at the old school that burned. She thinks the new school was built just like the old one. Same "H" design. It was in the middle to late '30's on the same land."

In the photo above, are many children that
I remember playing with...I wasn't old enough to
go to school, but everyone seemed to take me
in stride....won't see that kind of tolerance in the
school system of today.
