BALL William Iron Worker 1795: William Ball, iron worker and puddler. Born Horsehay, Great Dawley Shropshire, England. Died: 1852. He had the nickname of "The Shropshire Giant" because of his size. He was also well known under the pseudonym "John Bull". From the age of 8 he was employed for forty years at the Coalbrookdale Company's Horsehay Ironworks. He ceased working when a piece of molten iron blinded him in one eye. He married twice his first wife Mary Bailed in 1819 and had two children Eliza (born 1823) and Thomas (born 1824), sadly both daughter and wife died in 1824 and son Thomas aged 15yrs. IN 1851 Henry is 63yrs, a widower, living with his daughter Jane Wright 39yrs and her husband James Wright and their children.

BURBRIDGE Alfred Iron Worker 1847: Alfred Burbridge, iron monger. Alfred was son of William Burbridge of Milverton. Alfred was apprenticed to master iron monger to Sidney Fravel, Warwick 28 April 1847. Information was taken from the Indenture of Apprenticeship Warwick 1800's Warwickshire. I have no other information.

The 1851 census lists him as 31yrs, living at Merrystone Square, Coat Bridge, Lanark with wife: Nancy 30yrs. Children: John 10yrs, Alexander 8yrs, William 1yr infant.
CALLANDER James Iron Worker 1813: James Callander, iron founder. Born about 1813 in Cambusnethan, Lanark. The 1851 census lists him as 38yrs; visiting James Strathearn (cart iron dresser) & family at Burnbrae.
CARD Frank Henry Iron Worker 1867: Frank Henry Card, Iron Founder. Born in 1867 at Leytonstone, Essex, the son of William Card (1836 - see Blacksmith of Essex index). In 1891 at Chelmsford, Essex, Frank married Annie Harris, the granddaughter of Joseph Harris (1806) an Iron Founder (see Iron Worker Index). Frank served an apprenticeship with Christy Brothers of Broomfield Road, Chelmsford, a firm owned by Quakers, Frank’s apprentice indentures forbade alcohol, smoking, gambling, frequenting houses of ill repute and consorting with loose women. Sometime after completing his apprenticeship Frank left Christy Bros and worked in the Woolwich Arsenal. In the 1901 Census Frank and Annie were living in Artillery Road, Colchester and Frank was working at Crittall’s in Colchester. By 1903 Frank was back working with Christy Bros where he invented or perfected some sort of Moulding Rod for which he was given a generous bonus, enabling Frank and Annie to buy the family home in South Primrose Hill, Chelmsford. Frank and Annie raised six children at Chelmsford between 1893 and 1908, another child was born at Colchester in 1900, Frank and Annie are my maternal grandparents. Contact Derek by.

In 1770 a marriage settlement for his wife Martha Wilson, daughter of Joseph Wilson, brewer of Bristol, was executed. The 1775 Bristol Directory, published by Temple Local History Society has them Living at 146, Reecliffe Street, Bristol. John Hall's son Thomas Wilson Hall was a customs officer in Bristol (probate dated 1844) and he can be found on 1841 census. William also worked as a blacksmith & brazier, while Henry worked in the shop prior to his death in 1830. Joseph does not appear to have been involved in the business other than in name. Moese operated the Ironmongery at 1 Westminster Bridge Road [aka] 1 Surrey foot of Westminster Bridge Road, Lambeth until the death of Timothy (Jnr) at the age of 40 in 1818. In his will he left the business and most of his considerable estate to his uncle Moses and his three cousins. In 1773 the rent was £40 p.a. and the quarterly assessment 10/- plus £10.2.6 for the workshop. In 1788 the rent was £48 p.a. and the assessment £1.16.0 per quarter. Timothy died in 1792 and is buried at St Mary, Lambeth. His widow Sarah, briefly operated the business until her death in 1794. PITT Robert Iron Worker 1818: Robert Pitt, iron founder engineer. Born 1818 in London, England to George Pitt & Sarah Woodward. In 1834 he joined George Stothert's company as an apprentice. In the 1841 census he is an engineer. In 1844 he & George Rayno were appointed as co-partners with Henry Stothert to the engineering works now known as Stothert, Rayno & Pitt. In the 1851 census he is an engineer and iron founder in a firm of 3 employing 70 men. On the retirement of George Rayno in 1855, the firm became known as Stothert and Pitt. In the 1861 census he was an engineer and iron founder employing about 100 men & boys. He died on 18 March 1886 in Bath. Stothert and Pitt became known as "the cranemakers to the world". In 1785 he took over the business and the 1787 Bristol and Bath Directory lists him as "George Stothert, Brazier & Ironmonger, Horse Street". In 1796 he was an agent for the products of the Coalbrookdale iron company. The Stothert foundry was first established in Bath in 1815. He died in London in 1818. Contact Dianne by.

He took over the family foundry in 1827, and took Robert Pitt as an apprentice in 1834. From 1844 the company became Stothert, Rayno and Pitt. Then in 1855 as Stothert and Pitt were known as "cranemakers to the world". They were a British engineering company, the builders of a variety of products ranging from dock cranes to construction plant, and household cast iron items. They went out of business in 1989. SWAYNE(SWAIN) Walter Iron Worker 1747: Walter Swayne (aka Swain),ironmonger. Born 30 July 1747, Bristol, England. Walter was the son of the Revd George Swayne and his wife, Mary. Walter married Mary Ann Dowell (1749 - 1827) on 24 October 1776. Mary was the daughter of John Dowell, hatter, who business was at 35/40 Wine Street next to Walter's ironmongery at 30 Wine Street. Walter and Mary had eleven children. Five of their sons joined the British army or the HEICS and served in India. Walter died on 11 June 1798 and was buried at Limington with many of his family. Walter was apprenticed to John Hall of Bristol and was not only a tradesman, but also a craftsman making the wrought iron communion rail for Christ Church, Bristol. Walter's firm also manufactured in its own foundry and wholesaled and retailed its stock of over 600 items. A copy of its catalogue was found in the library of Benjamin Franklin who probably bought items for his home in Philadelphia. Although Walter died a wealthy man, the business became insolvent soon after his death. Walter and Mary are my 3rd great grandparents. Contact John by

VINSON Reginald Stewart Ironworker, Blacksmith, Wheelwright,Farrier 1920: Reginald Stewart Vinson. In the 1920's he was a blacksmith/wheelwright/iron worker, he served his apprenticeship with Metters of Tavistock. His daughter Valerie say "my knowledge is a bit vague im afraid but it must have been about the late 1920s. At the time Reginald lived at Devon Great Consols Lamerton. We however shifted to quite a few moorland villages as the work dried up. When the horse was supplanted by the tractor he went to work at Devonport dockyard and was sent to Gibraltar just after WW2. On the 1851 census he is listed as David Wilson aged 30,an Iron Moulder, in Lower Bent, Oldham (ref A0180) with wife Hannah 26yrs. Children: Mary 2yrs & Elizabeth 1 month infant. Elizabeth's birth certificate for 20/01/1851 also gives David's surname as Wilson and his occupation as Iron moulder. Elizabeth was born in Wigan.
