In the 1861 census he was an engineer and iron founder employing about 100 men & boys. He died on 18 March 1886 in Bath. Stothert and Pitt became known as "the cranemakers to the world". | SWAYNE(SWAIN) | Walter | Iron Worker | 1747: Walter Swayne (aka Swain),ironmonger. Born 30 July 1747, Bristol, England. Walter was the son of the Revd George Swayne and his wife, Mary. Walter married Mary Ann Dowell (1749 - 1827) on 24 October 1776. Mary was the daughter of John Dowell, hatter, who business was at 35/40 Wine Street next to Walter's ironmongery at 30 Wine Street. Walter and Mary had eleven children. Five of their sons joined the British army or the HEICS and served in India. Walter died on 11 June 1798 and was buried at Limington with many of his family. Walter was apprenticed to John Hall of Bristol and was not only a tradesman, but also a craftsman making the wrought iron communion rail for Christ Church, Bristol. Walter's firm also manufactured in its own foundry and wholesaled and retailed its stock of over 600 items. A copy of its catalogue was found in the library of Benjamin Franklin who probably bought items for his home in Philadelphia. Although Walter died a wealthy man, the business became insolvent soon after his death. Walter and Mary are my 3rd great grandparents. Contact John by |

We however shifted to quite a few moorland villages as the work dried up. When the horse was supplanted by the tractor he went to work at Devonport dockyard and was sent to Gibraltar just after WW2.
