BESWICK Benjamin John Blacksmith 1830: Benjamin John Beswick, master blacksmith and iron bed maker. Born about 1830 in St Pancras, London, Middlesex. He was referred to as a blacksmith on the following documents: His first marriage to Louisa Fincham on 8th April 1849. His second Marriage to Sarah Clayton nee Wright on 1st March 1875. Eight of nine of his children's baptisms so far found from 1849 to 1866. Censuses for 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 - this last he was described as a master Smith employing 6 men and 8 boys. He was described as an Iron Bedstead maker on: His third marriage to Mary Ann Pledge nee Arnold on 19th June 1882. 1891 Census Directory of Businesses on two occasions. Benjamin passed the business on to his son Alexander Archibald on his death on 9th May 1891. His father Samuel was a plumber, a messenger and a Greenwich pensioner having served in the Navy from the age of 13. Contact Pennie by .
BUCKINGHAM Thomas Blacksmith 1835: Thomas Buckingham, blacksmith. Born about 1835 in Marylebone, Middlesex, England. The 1851 UK census lists Thomas as 16yrs, living in Bell Green, Wisbeach, Norfolk with parents John & Hannah. Listed in Blacksmiths of Middlesex and Norfolk.
COLE James Blacksmith, Shoemaker,Innkeeper 1600: James Cole, blacksmith. Born 25 June 1600 in Highgate, London, Middlesex, England. In 1632 James Cole, his wife, Mary & two children came to Saco, ME,USA and in the following year located at Plymouth, Massachusetts,.USA. He owned Cole's Hill located just behind Plymouth Rock. His occupations in America are listed as shoemaker & then inn keeper. James died 1692 in the USA. See Blacksmiths of America for his grandson Ephraim Cole born 1659. DANN (DAN) George Blacksmith, Whitesmith 1821: Dan(Dann) George, blacksmith, whitesmith. Born about 1821, ?Kent. The 1841 UK census lists george as 20yrs, living at No.1, North Place, Clerkenwell, Middlesex; with wife Elizabeth 20yrs (born Loose, Kent). Children Listed: George 2yrs; James 7monhs infant. In the 1851 census George is not listed with family; Elizabeth is 34yrs (whitesmiths wife) is at Loose Road with children: George. W. 12yrs; James.T. 10yrs; Elizabeth 8yrs; John 6yrs; Sheriff 11mths infant boy. George’s daughter Elizabeth Dan married Orlando Buzzard on April 5th 1861 in the parish of St Martins, Leicester. Their marriage certificate identifies that George Dan was at that time the Blacksmith at Kibworth Beauchamp in Leicestershire. Listed in Blacksmiths Middlesex and Leicestershire + the Whitesmiths Index. **** possibility - George Dann 34yrs (born Kent) lodging at 105 Archway Court, Wandsworth. DAY Cephas Blacksmith, Whitesmith 1821: Cephas Day, blacksmith, whitesmith. Born about 1821, Exeter, Devon, England. The 1841 UK census lists as 20yrs, living in St.Stephans Street, in the Close of St.Peters Cathedral, Devon; with wife Jemima 20yrs (born Exeter) and daughter Matilda 5months infant. In 1851 Cephas is 33yrs, living at park Cottages, Islington, Middlesex. Jemima is 32yrs. Children: Matilda.W. 10yrs; Jemima 4yrs; Emma.M. 2yrs. Cephas is listed in the Blacksmiths of Devon & Middlesex and in the Whitesmiths Index.
DENTON Henry Blacksmith 1853: Henry Denton, blacksmith, whitesmith. Born 6th Nov 1853 in St Pancras Middlesex, England. The 1871 UK census lists Henry as 1yrs, a blacksmith living at No:1 Augustus Wharf, St Pancras. On 14 March 1875 Henry married Mary Ann Smith at St Pancras Church, Middx , address given 91 Charlton Street. Children: Henry (bapt. 17Feb1879); Herbert (bapt. 17Feb1879); Ada Martha (born 20Mar1888); Rose (bapt. 10Dec1894); Thomas William (bapt. 20Sep1898); Lydia (bapt. 16Oct1899); The 1881 census shows Henry and wife Mary Ann at 21 River Terrace with sons Henry and John. 1911 census, living at 99 Ossulton Street with wife Mary Ann and daughters Rose and Lydia. GEESON Moses Henry Blacksmith 1850: Moses Henry Geeson, blacksmith. Born about 1850, and baptized in Bletchington, Oxford, England. Moses moved to Middlesex before he was 10 years old. The 1861 UK census lists Moses as 10yrs, living at 9 Mary Street, Bromley, Middlesex with parents William and Ann plus siblings. In 1891 Moses is 41yrs, at 32 Locknager Street, Bromley, Middlesex, with wife Louisa 29yrs(born Middlesex). Children: Annie 19yrs; Louisa 4yrs; and son Ingle 1yr infant. GREENBANK George Thomas Blacksmith 1833: George Thomas Greenbank, whitesmith, blacksmith, farrier. Born about i1833, in Yorkshire, England. Died 1887 Cranford Middlesex. Son of Joseph Greenbank (a smith). The 1861 UK census lists him as 28yrs, at 26 Gt. Tufton Street, Westminster, Middlesex; with wife Mary Ann 19yrs (born 1840 Portsmouth,Hampshire). Also listed were ‘sisters’ Harriet Slack 23yrs and Mary Ann Slack 20yrs. Assuming these are George’s sisters (they were born in Middlesex). In 1871 George is 38yrs, at 5 Boston Street, Brighton, Sussex. Mary Ann 30yrs. Children: Elizabeth 10yrs; George 8yrs; Harry 5yrs; Frederick 2yrs; Arthur 2mths infant. 1881: George is incorrectly listed as ???67yrs, George is only 47yrs at the blacksmiths forge, Hatton Road, East Bedfont, Middlesex . HAWLEY Charles Blacksmith 1800: Charles Hawley, born circa 1800 is listed on his son's marriage certificate as a blacksmith. Place of birth unknown, but lived in London, Middlesex from about 1829 when his son Charles was born. Contact Dane by
HAWLEY Charles Blacksmith 1829: Charles Hawley, born 1829, appears in 1881 and 1871 census as a blacksmith; Living at 77 Pulford Street, St George Hanover Square, Westminster. He married Mary Ann Harrison in 1851. Their eldest son, Charles 19yrs at the time appears in the 1881census as a blacksmith. Contact Dane by
HAWLEY Henry Samuel Blacksmith 1866: Henry Samuel Hawley, born 1866. Henry was the youngest son of Charles (of 1829). Charles' occupation on the birth certificate is 'Journeyman Blacksmith'. Henry grew up to be a blacksmith too, as shown on his marriage certificate. He married Annie Mead in 1884. Later he specialised his blacksmith skills as a toolsmith catering to the stonemason's trade. He appears in the 1901 census as a tool smith and on his youngest son's birth certificate as a tool smith. It is believed he made and repaired all of the stonemason's tools used on Tower Bridge. I believe the business name was 'Henry Samuel Hawley and Sons', but I have no documents to prove it. I believe that the business was continued by Henry's son Frederick when Henry moved away from London in about 1906. Contact Dane by
HOAR Robert Blacksmith 1858: Robert Hoar, blacksmith. Born about 1858 in Marylebone, Middlesex, England. The 1881 UK census lists Robert as 23yrs, living 64 Blundal Street Finsbury (London) with wife Elizabeth 24yrs (boen Marylebone) and daughter Sarah 1yr infant.
INSTONE Thomas Blacksmith 1765: Thomas Instone, blacksmith. Born about 1765. Married Ann Bookemaster (born 1767 in Staines Middlesex) in St Sepulchre London in 1794. Banns for marriage read 11th May 1794. His wife’s death certificate gave her husband’s profession as blacksmith. The Instone family is spread between Blacksmiths of Hampshire, Middlesex and Surrey and the Cartwrights and Wheelwrights Indexes.

The 1841 UK census lists him as 18yrs, trade ‘turner’, living in Church Street, Hamlet of Mile End New Town, Middlesex with his father Thomas Jordan 50yrs (silk weaver). Siblings: John 20yrs; Elizabeth 19yrs; Daniel 15yrs; Elenor 14yrs. The 1851 census lists George as 29yrs, at Wolverley Street, Bethnal Green with wife Caroline 34yrs (born St Pancreas, London). PROBERT William Blacksmith, coachsmith 1806: William Probert, blacksmith, coachsmith, carriage spring maker. Born about 1785 in Bath, Somerset, England. At the approx age of 14 yrs William Probert took up Apprenticeship learning the trade of blacksmith in Islington Middlesex. In 1841 William was employed as a blacksmith. 1851: William is 45yrs, a coachsmith, wife Ann 44yrs, living in Gloucester Crescent, Islington, Middlesex. Children: John 17yrs (a costermonger); Emma 13yrs; Edward 7yrs; George 5yrs. 1861: a Carriage Spring Maker and in 1871 a coachsmith. William Died in April 1878. REYNOLDS Benjamin Blacksmith 1700: Benjamin Reynolds was a blacksmith in the late 1700’s & was apprenticed to a blacksmith named LUNN in Cove in the parish of Yateley Hampshire (now Berks). His family all came from local parts of this parish back to 1720. Died 1786 aged 30yrs leaving a wife and 5 children. He died in Isleworth Middlesex his wife having recently given birth to a son Thomas in Isleworth. Two of his other children were born in Cobham Surrey and Kingston also in Surrey. Also listed in Blacksmiths of Hampshire & Surrey. I believe that he was a travelling blacksmith with his family which would explain the births at these other parishes. I have not found any articles to verify this and wondered if this was a common practice assuming they could not afford their own premises. RIDDALL James Blacksmith 1790: James Riddall, blacksmith. Born 1790, at Rotherhithe, Surrey, England. James was the youngest child of blacksmith Thomas Riddall. By late 1821 he and his wife Ann were settled in Mile End Old Town, Middlesex, where three of their children were baptized. A fourth child was baptized at St Dunstan Stepney, Middlesex, in 1830. TAYLOR Robert Blacksmith 1810: Robert Taylor, blacksmith. Born about 1810, Isleworth, Middlesex, England and died in1878 in Twickenham. Robert married Charlotte Wise in1832 in Hanwell, Middlesex. They had 9 children, all born in Richmond. John b. 1853, William b. 1834, Frederick b. 1835, Charlotte b. 1842, Harriet b. 1833, Mary Ann b. 1845, Emma b. 1845, Elizabeth (Eliza) b. 1848 and Robert b. 1851. The 1871 UK census lists Robert as 61yrs, living at St.Marys Terrace, Twickenham, Middlesex with Charlotte 61yrs plus sons Robert 20yrs(plasterer) and John 18yrs. Listed on sons birth certificate dated 1879, as a blacksmith at Chapel Row, Uxbridge, Middlesex, England. The 1851 UK census lists Abraham as 28yrs, living at Uxbridge with wife Louisa 25yrs (born Harefield, Middlesex). Children: Robert 4yrs; William 1yr. WHITLEY John Blacksmith 1882: John Whitleyblacksmith journeyman. Born about 1882 in Tottenham, Middlesex, England. The exact year of his birth is unknown at this stage as it is different on every document related to him! I believe he was born around 1882. On the 8th Jun 1920, he married Emily Eliza Margaret RANN at the Church of the Precious Blood, Hertford Road, Lower Edmonton. His occupation was listed as journeyman blacksmith and his residence as 85 St Mary's Road, Edmonton, London, Middlesex, England. In 1925 the young family were living at 10 Grove Road, West Enfield Wash, Middlesex, England and John had become a fully qualified blacksmith. On the 8th Dec 1928 he left England on the SS Orsova for Australia. In 1931 he is living at 45 Myrtle St, Bendigo, Vic, Australia and is working as a blacksmith. In 1936 he is still in Bendigo, but now at 243 Queen St, Golden Square, Bendigo, Vic, Australia, working as a labourer. Listed in the Blacksmiths of Australia and Blacksmiths of Middlesex Indexes.
