BROWN Alfred Kethero Blacksmith 1873: Alfred Kethero Brown, military blacksmith, miner, shoeing smith, saddles and harness. Born about 1973 in Oxford, Cowley,England. Enlisted at Kalgoorlie 21st February 1917. Regimental number 280. Alfred served in Palestine in the Imperial Camel Corps Brigade and later in 15th light horse1st 11th company ICC.. Before enlisting Alfred lived in Laverton West Australia where he operated a mine. Alfred married Christina Campbell, they lived in Bibra Lake (near Perth, Western Australia) and raised a family there. Listed in Blacksmiths of Australia, Oxfordshire and Militery. Contact Lynden by
BUY Edwin Blacksmith 1846: Edwin Buy, blacksmith. Born about 1846, Little Tew, Oxfordshire, England. The 1861 UK census lists him as 15yrs, living at Great Rollright with his parents. In 1871 Edwin is 25yrs, a blacksmiths and machinist, living in Gloucestershire with wife Rose 23yrs. Children: Helen 3yrs; Henry 1yr infant. BUY Henry Blacksmith 1815: Henry Buy, blacksmith. Born about 1815, Little Tew, Oxfordshire, England. The 1861 UK census lists him as 46yrs, living at Great Rollright with wife Rebeckah 46yrs(born Oxfordshire). Children: Edwin 15yrs (blacksmith); Thomas 12yrs; Sarah Maria 8yrs; Stephen 5yrs; William James 2yrs. Henry was the blacksmith in Great Rollright from about 1860 to 1888 his son Edwin worked for him and took over after Henry retired and left to live with his daughter in Putney. EDWARDS William Anthony Blacksmith 1844: William (Anthony) Edwards, journeyman blacksmith. Born 1844 in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England. His father was a blacksmith too I think. (Could be Hensington, Bladon but not sure. Think this was a workhouse?). No more knowledge until found him in Nottingham in 1882 where he married Matilda Barton. He then lived in Kettering Northants (1891 and 1901 census) still working as blacksmith. Died Kettering 14 December 1911. Listed in Blacksmiths of Oxfordshire; Nottinghamshire; Northamptonshire. HOLMES John Blacksmith 1808: John Holmes,blacksmith. Born 1808 Whitchurch, Oxfordshire, England. Parents Henry Holmes and Anne Fuller. John was a blacksmith of Whitchurch from 1841 to possibly 1891 when he died. By 1861 he employed 2 men to help him. His only child Herbert John Holmes b. 1859 was also a blacksmith from 1881 to 1901. By 1901 John H Holmes b. 1884 and Cecil R Holmes b. 1885 the sons of Herbert and grandsons of John, was also "Stoking & general smith"""or "blacksmith". Contact Annie by.

In the 1841 England census he is recorded as a blacksmith living with his family living at Ipsten Farm, Henly, Oxfordshire. The 1841 UK census lists Charles as 20yrs, living in Swan Street, Handborough with mother Elizabeth Long 50yrs plus siblings Fanny Long 25yrs and Walter Long 15yrs. See 1841-1891 census which list Charles had a forge in Cogges, Newland, now part of Witney. In 1851 Charles is 33yrs living in Coggs with wife Amelia 34yrs. The 1881 UK census lists Frank as 1yr infant living in Asthall, Witney, Oxfordshire with parents Arthur Long 36yrs (born 1845 blacksmith master) and Ruth Long 34yrs. Siblings: Louisa.R. 11yrs; Charles.T. 10yrs; Sarah.A. 8yrs; William.A. 5yrs; Helen.E. 2yrs. The 1st forge was at Fordwells & then at Cogges, Witney. In 1891 Frank is 11yrs, living in Cogges, Oxfordshire. Parents: Arthur 46yrs, Ruth 44yrs. Siblings: William.A. 15yrs; Hellen 12yrs; Lottie 8yrs; Margaret 5yrs; Harry 3yrs. 1901: Frank is 21yrs. Arthur 56yrs, Ruth 54yrs. Siblings: Margaret 15yrs; Harry 12yrs. The 1911 census lists Frank as 32yrs, unmarried still in Cogges. PENDRY Bartholomew Blacksmith 1749: Bartholomew Pendry, blacksmith. Born 1749 & Christened on September 10th, 1749. Parents: Joseph Pendry (1708-1782) & Jane (nee Field) who lived in the village of Forest Hill near Oxford. In approx 1780 Bartholomew moved to the village of Black Bourton, Oxford, where he married Jane Dawson. They had five children, Elizabeth (1780), Joseph (1782), John (1783), Ann (1788) and Isaac (1791). Bartholomew must have moved back to Forest Hill at some time after 1812, perhaps after his father had died. Bartholomew was the village blacksmith and his elder son, Joseph, followed in his footsteps. The 1841 Census lists Bartholomew as 92yrs, living at the smithy, in the village of Forest Hill near Oxford.. Other listed: son Joseph 50yrs (blacksmith); Elizabeth Pendry 60yrs; Jane Pendry 25yrs. The smithy was listed next to the White Horse Public House which is still in the centre of the village, possibly at Sadler’s Cottage. Bartholomew died in 1846 aged 97yrs. He, his wife Jane, and daughter, Jane Elizabeth, were buried together at St Nicolas Church. See Blacksmiths of Oxford for other family members. Contact Mike by
PENDRY Joseph (Jnr) Blacksmith 1791: Joseph Pendry (Jnr), blacksmith. Born about 1791, in Oxfordshire. Son of blacksmith Bartholomew Pendry (1749-1846)& Jane (nee Dawson). The 1841 UK census lists Joseph as 50yrs, living at the smithy in the village of Forest Hill near Oxford. Also listed were father Bartholomew Pendry 92yrs; Elizabeth Pendry 60yrs; Jane Pendry 25yrs. Joseph (Jnr) continued to be the blacksmith at Forest Hill until the 1860s. He died in 1867 at the age of eighty five. Contact Mike by
PENDRY Joseph (Snr) Blacksmith 1708: Joseph Pendry (Snr), master blacksmith. Baptised at the village of Hampton Gay 30th April 1708. He married Jane Field on 9th November 1738 St Martin’s Oxford. Joseph and Jane lived in the village of Cuddesdon but attended the church at Forest Hill. They had six children: Joseph 1739 (died early), Elizabeth 1743, Isaac 1745, Joseph (Jnr) 1747, Bartholomew 1749 and Miriam 1751. Joseph (Snr) was the village blacksmith before his son Bartholomew took over Amongst Joseph (Snr)’s apprentices was Joseph Lovegrove, the son of Joseph’s (Jnr) cousin, Elizabeth. Joseph (Snr) died at Cuddesdon & was buried at Forest Hill on 8th September 1782. See Blacksmiths of Oxfordshire for other family members. Contact Mike by

SODEN James Blacksmith 1803: James Soden,blacksmith. Born 1803 (son of Joseph a blacksmith) he was a blacksmith in 1841 & 1851 in Yarnton. His first son George Perkins Soden was a blacksmith in Yarnton oxfordshire in 1851 and when he married there in 1862 Third son Peter was also a blacksmith working first with his father in 1851 in Yarnton. In 1871 he was 29 a Licensed Victualler & Blacksmith Master employing 1 man. His Inn was the Black Bullinn Kidlington Oxfordshire. A wonderful Website has been designed. Contact.
