All the household furniture, effects, and stock in trade of Mr William Briggs Blacksmith at Holton Near Halesworth Suffolk Comprising one bedstead and hangings, feather bed and bedding, tables, chairs, 30 hour clock, copper and irons, iron oven and ditto beer casks, wash keelers boilers and saucepans, earth and stone ware, with many other articles in the housekeeping line. The Stock consists of a quantity of bar and hoop iron, horse shoes and moulds, a pair of bellows, large anvil, beak iron, 8 bench vices, a sledge and other hammers, sway and bitts and working implements in general; also a clever poney, sale to begin at ten o'clock. And also to begin at six o'clock the same evening the dwellinghouse of the said Wm Briggs which is freehold, brick'd and tiled, with a blacksmith's shop and traverse, all in good repair situated by the side of the turnpike road at the entrance of the street in Holton. Ended his life out of work living in poor housing in Stamford after his wife died in childbirth 1873; he died in May 1892. His daughters moved to Leicester, and did not marry; two of the sons joined the railway, married and had families in Rugby and Nuneaton/Stamford; and the eldest surviving son (George Henry) stayed in business in Stamford, where he married but had no children. The 1851 UK census gives Henry as Blacksmith journeyman of Langham; 1861 as Blacksmith and farmer 11 acres of Langham; 1871 as Blacksmith and farmer 18 acres of Hillwatering Road, Langham; 1881 as Farmer 18 acres of Blacksmiths Cottage, Langham; 1891 as Farmer of Hillwatering Road, Langham. Henry and Hannah had 9 children, none of the boys became lifelong blacksmiths. Henry was buried at St Mary the Virgin, Langham on 17 May 1898, Hannah died in 1910.
