Letter to Thomas Cook

Derby, November 7th, 1888

Dear Mr Cook,
I have the pleasure to send you a list of the Missionaries who have gone to Orissa in connection with our Society. I also give the names of those who have been sent by the Ladies' Society.

I scarcely knew whether you mean by 'where they came from' their native place, or the Church of which they were members at the time they were sent. I fear I could not give either the birthplace or the Church of all. The following were members of the Church at Barton:-

Mrs STUBBINS, néeMiss KIRKMAN
Mrs BUCKLEY, née Miss DERRY
Thomas BAILEY
Mrs BAILEY, née Miss Mary DERRY
John Orissa GOADBY
William HILL. Pastor of Barton Church over 5 years
Mrs HILL
Henry WOOD. Pastor of Barton at the time he offered for Mission Service
Mrs WOOD

Gunga Dhor, having seen so many Missionaries from Barton, and having heard so much about it, is said to have enquired on one occasion 'whether London was as large as Barton!' The fact was that he had seen more Missionaries from this small Leicestershire village, than from the great metropolis of England and the world. And, doubtless, it will be revealed, at the last day, that many who hd their origin in obscure and insignificant villages have played important parts in the enlightenment and evangelization of the world. 'Who hath despised the day of small things!'

If I can furnish any further information I shall be happy to do so. Wishing you success in the publication you contemplate, with kind regards,

Yours faithfully,
Wm HILL
