PART 4: 1720-1855 CENTURY FAMILIES OF
BOWMAN, BROWN, STURROCK

Following are the research notes compiled on approximately 20 percent of the population of the parish of Carmyllie. Attempted to establish a pattern of family clusters migrating into the parish, acquiring employment as tenant farmers, quarriers, weavers, and farm servants.

The population of the parish of Carmyllie between the years 1755 and 1831 increased 55 percent from 745 to 1,153 inhabitants.. For the years 1831 to 1835 an estimated 30 births and 16 deaths occurred each year = 3:1 ratio. The parish of Carmyllie is 12 square miles. In 1755 there were 62 people per square mile and by 1831 there were 96 people per square mile.

The average number of children born in each family was four, though larger families of 8-10 children did occur particularly in the tenant farmers. Tenant farmers leased land from their landlords for 19 years. Farm servants were lodged in apartments separate from the farm house, called bothies. Unmarried farm-servants frequently boarded in their master's house. Thus each farm could consist of a farm house, housing the landlord and unmarried female servants, and several bothies, housing married tenants and unmarried males.

Quarry workers, numbering sixty labourers in 1836, substituted their quarry work with weaving of coarse linens in the winter. Alexander Smart, Esq. of Conansythe owned an active slate and pavement quarry while John Ouchterlony, Esq. of Guynd, had a quarry on his property, which in 1836, had not been worked for many years.

Some of the tracks of moor that belonged the Lord Panmure, the Esquire of Guynd, and Esquire of Conansythe, are connected with extensive moors in neighbouring parishes, and are sometimes used for wintering sheep from the Grampians.
