Western Cemetery Scotland

Western Cemetery

Western Cemetery was opened by a private company in 1843. It was run by this company until late in
the 20th century
when it was taken over by Dundee Council who continue to maintain it. It is situated
in the west end of Dundee, on the
 north side of Perth Road.

The column top on the right was hit by lightning about 50 years ago. It was removed for safety and has never been replaced. The entrance arches are highly decorated with panels with Bible texts, religious poems and mottoes. The gate has small decorative panels each one with a different beatitude.

The cemetery is a long narrow rectangle. Surrounded by a high stone wall, it slopes gently upwards to the north. It has been extended northwards and is still used for interments although, nowadays, it has a slightly unkempt air. All parts of the cemetery may be seen wherever you stand.
