The earliest settler in this area was Neal McCan, who arrived in Missouri about 1818 and obtained his first patent in 1821 in Section 18. John Zumwalt, another early settler of the Elkhorn area, purchased land about two and one-half miles northeast of Neal McCan, and was issued a land patent in 1829, in Section 10.
