DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA - Georgetown  (Full story of 3 generations: Vincent Jas Taylor, Sr.; Vincent J. Taylor Jr.; & Julius St. Vincent Taylor)

District of Columbia, Georgetown and Fairfax County, Virginia Vincent Jas. Taylor, Sr., b. 20 Sept. 1775; d. 25 July 1835, & wife Margaret Reynolds b.1 Feb 1780; d. 9 Aug 1866. Married 1 December 1799, Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia.

The District of Columbia, formed in 1801, was originally 100 square miles. Maryland ceded 69 square miles of land from Montgomery County and Virginia ceded 31 square miles including the city of Alexandria from Fairfax County. Vincent Taylor is first enumerated in the 1810 Fairfax County, Virginia Federal Census. Subsequently enumerated in 1820 Georgetown, District of Columbia,  under the name John Taylor, and in 1830 Georgetown, District of Columbia,  under the name Vincent. Taylor.

(7) Hannah Ann b. 22 Oct. 1814; d. 13 Sept. 1826. (8) Isaac Mark Henry, b. 22 Aug. 1816; d. 13 Sept. 1822. (9) Joshua Thomas, b. 9 Feb. 1819. (10) James, b. 29 March 1823, d. 11 Aug. 1823. District of Columbia, Georgetown. Vincent J. Taylor, Jr. son of Vincent Taylor Sr. and Margaret Reynolds,  (31 April 1812-VA-31 Dec. 1858-DC). Married ca 1833, Anne E. Massey, b. 1816, Delaware. Five children: (1) George L, b. 1839; (2) Julius St.Vincent, b. 1843; (3) Charles Cathcart b. 1846; (4) Sarah Anna Louise, b. 1850; and (5) Rosalie/Rose Marguerite. The 1853 "The Washington and Georgetown Directory, Strangers' Guide-book for Washington, and Congressional and Clerks' Register," compiled and published by Alfred Hunter, lists Mr. Taylor's address as NW Corner of Potomac and 1st Street, (58 First Street, a.k.a. 3307 N. Street). Georgetown. Taylor's Mill is located north side Water, near aqueduct.

 

MARYLAND

St. Mary's County, Maryland. Vincent Taylor (b. before 1723) Mentioned in the will of Elias Barber: To bro. John, cousins Baptist, Cornelius, Edward son of Luke and Rebecca and Abram Branson and to Thomas Greenfield and Edward Barber, Sr., personalty including that now with Vincent Taylor. To sisters Elizabeth Power, Eleanor Sanders, Margaret Taylor,1shilling each. To cousin Baptist, residue of estate." Ex:--blank. Test: James Fysye, Peter Moran, John Elliott, Mevril Haulks. 23.458. Caroline County, Maryland. Vincent Taylor married Elizabeth Martindall (Martindale), 26 July 1794. (Variant of Martindale?).

Jefferson County, Kentucky. Vinie Taylor, b 1770, Virginia, Free Black. 1850 Jefferson County, KY Federal Census, Page 120. Also living in the household of Vinie Taylor is Abba Cass, age 40, born 1810-Virginia, Free Black.

Cumberland County, Kentucky. Vincent Taylor, b. ~1786-VA, and wife Frances Bowman, b. 1790-VA. Married 18 February 1807, Chesterfield, Virginia. Federal Census: 1820,1830, 1840, & 1850. Will date 24 April 1866.(1) Son Joseph P. Taylor, deceased; & his children (Daniel V., Mildna F. B., & Ellen); (2) dau. Mrs. P. B. Newby, (3) son Tarlton S. Taylor; (4) son Granville A. Taylor (b~1826); (5) son R. C. Taylor. Children all born between 1810 to 1830. (Will-UsGenWeb Archives-Cumberland Co., KY).

Woodford County & Anderson County, Kentucky. Vincent Taylor, b. 1795-VA, and wife Ann Shyrock b. 1806-Delaware. Married 21 December 1820, Woodford Co., KY. Federal census 1830-Woodford Co. 1840&1850-Anderson Co., KY. Household of two-no children. Occupation-farmer. Vincent cannot read or write.

VIRGINIA

Fauquier County, Virginia. Vincent Taylor, b ~January 1750, d. 21 Oct 1854, and wife, born. bet. 1765-1784. Vincent was enumerated in all Fauquier County censuses from 1810 to 1850. The first census Vincent appeared in, at age 60, was the 1810 Federal Census enumerated a household of seven: Vincent Taylor, age >45 years old, wife aged 26-45, and five children: female, aged 16-26, b. 1784-1794; male, aged 10-16, born 1794-1800; Two males & one female born between, age less than 10, b. 1800-1810.Vincent Taylor, age 69, was bondsman for the marriage of his daughter Sarah Taylor to John C. Lampkin 16 May 1819 in Fauquier Co., VA. Vincent Taylor, at age 99, is found living in the 1850 Census in the household of Armistead Taylor, age 26, and wife Elizabeth Yates, age 25. Enoch Barber, superintendent of a poor house in Fauquier County reported that Vincent Taylor died of "affection of heart," at the age of 104, on 21 October 1854. Armistead Taylor, is the son of William Taylor, b. ~1798, Centre Township, Fauquier Co., Virginia.

Westmoreland County, Virginia. Vincent Taylor. "A List of Free Mulattoes & Negroes in Westmoreland County, Virginia, 1801." Taken by Thomas Muse, Commissioner. Free colored person, carpenter, residing at the farm of J. Carter. (Reference: "A List of Free Mulattoes & Negroes in Westmoreland County, Virginia, 1801" Virginia Genealogies Publication. King & Queen County, Virginia. (Fountain E.) Vincent Taylor, b. 1798-VA, and wife Sarah Durham, b. bet. 1790-1800. Married about 1817/18, Location unknown. Federal Census 1830-Household of eight: Two adult males, one adult female, and five children. Children: (1) Flory Fountaine, b. 1818; (2) Kitturah b. 1820; (3) Miranda, b. 1827; (4) Eli Patterson, b. 1829; and female (5) E. A. (Elizabeth or Eleanor Ann), b. 1830. Second adult male, age 20-29, born between 1801-1810 is residing in the Vincent Taylor household, possibly a brother of Sarah Durham.  This Vincent Taylor family moved to Warrenton, Warren County, Missouri in the fall of 1835 and wife Sarah died ca. 1835-1838. MISSOURI

Warren County, Missouri. Vincent Taylor, b. 1798-VA, and second wife Mary Shrum McCann, born between 1780-1790, TN. Married 6 November 1839, Warren County, Missouri. 1840 Federal Census-Household of ten: two adults and eight children (4 boys/4girls). Children: (1) Kitturah Taylor b. 1820; (2) Miranda Taylor, b. 1827; (3) Eli Patterson Taylor, b. 1829; (4) Stephen Bernard Taylor, b. 1833; (5) Lewis McCann, b. 1825; (6) Sarah McCann, b. 1825; (7) John W. McCann, b. 1830; and (8) Mahala McCann, b. 1830 (or E.A. Taylor, b. 1830). 

Warren County, Missouri. Vincent Taylor, b. 1798-VA, and no spouse. Son Stephen Bernard Taylor, age 17, b. 1833-VA. Both farmers. August 1850 Federal Census. Son, Eli P. Taylor, is working at the George W. Dyer tobacco farm as a tobacconist. George W. Dyer is a native of Henry County, Virginia.

Warren County, Missouri. Vincent Taylor, b. 1798-VA, and third wife Sicily Jane Dickerson Garrett, b. 1825-VA. Married 12 November 1857, Troy, Lincoln County, MO. Federal Census June 9, 1860-Household of six: Four adults: Vincent, Sicily (a. k. a. Sicily & Cecilia), house guest Agatha Gill, age 80, b~1780-VA; and John Collins b. 1834-VA. Two children: Gemima (Jemima) Jane Garrett, b. 1845-VA; and Thomas W. (William) Garrett, b. 1849-VA. Sicily's eldest son, Benjamin F. Garrett, b. 1843-VA, is living at the William Duxton farm, Warrenton, Warren Co., MO.

 

ILLINOIS

Vincent W. Taylor, b. April 1842, Kentucky; d. ca 1910-1920, Little Mackinaw, Tazewell County, Illinois.  Served as a Private in the Third Calvary, Company B Regiment of Illinois Volunteers. Vincent, age 19, joined for three years service October 28, 1863, in Lagrange, Fayette County, Tennessee. Vincent listed his residence as Pekin, Tazewell County, Illinois when mustered into service November 16, 1863, at Memphis, Tennessee. Pekin is located about ten miles south of Peoria, Illinois. Vincent then transferred to Company F under a consolidation and mustered out of Company F on October 10, 1865 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota by Captain Bingham. On the Muster and Descriptive Roll of Company B no entries were made for physical description, occupation, or nativity.  Married Permelia Faile, b. June 1851, Illinois, on January 1, 1868, and resided in Little Mackinaw, Tazewell, Illinois. They had no children.  (Ref: Illinois State Archives, Springfield, Illinois). 

 

TENNESSEE

Rutherford & Williamson County, Tennessee. Vincent Taylor b. bet.1790-1800, and wife b. bet. 1800-1810.Vincent Taylor obtained three land grants in Williamson County, Tennessee: (1) 53 acres, 1825; (2) 50 acres 1827; and (3) 58.75 acres 1838. Federal Census 1830-Household of seven: Adult male & female, four children and one male slave.  Federal Census 1840-Household of 12: Adult male & female, 8 children, and 2 slaves.

Rover, Bedford, Co., Tennessee. Henry Vincent Taylor, b. 1841, Williamson Co., TN, and wife Cornelia Jane Manire, b. 26 Oct 1846. Both died in 1882 in Kentucky. (Source: RootsWeb. "Family of Boone L. Beaver Dam, Dodge Co., Wisconsin. Vine Taylor, b. 8 Feb. 1780- d. 9 Sept 1859, and wife Sarah (Sally) Gerow, b. 12 April 1787. Both born in Hartland Township, Windsor Co., Vermont.
