- BRIGADIER GENERAL GEORGE B. DUNCAN is
among the army officers receiving promotion to the
permanent rank of Brigadier General by Presidential
action. He was graduated from the United States
Military
Academy at West Point in 1886 and entered the regular
army immediately. After several years'
service with
regular and volunteer outfits, he was made Captain in
1899, Lieutenant Colonel in 1915
and Colonel in 1916.
During the war he was in command of a National Guard
outfit, and saw active
service early in the war, before
many of the American troops saw fighting. General Duncan
was the
first American officer commanding a sector on the
battlefront, north of Toul. He commanded troops
in many
other operations of the war, among which were Montdidier,
Baccaret, the Vesle and the Meuse,
Argonne offensive. He
has been decorated with the Croix de Guerre and the
French government made
him a commander of the Legion of
Honor. From the British government he received the honor
of being
made a Companion of the Order of the Bath. From
the United States Government he received the
Distinguished Service Medal. While in an observation post
in French trenches on the Verdun front,
a shell splinter
struck him. He was one of the first Americans wounded in
battle. General Duncan also
fought in the
Spanish-American War in Cuba and the Philippines,
commanding volunteer forces in Cuba,
and regular army
troops and Philippine Scouts in the Philippine Islands.
