Blißmer in Germany

1750-Present

This is the English Version of our data. If you care to read this page in German, please view our German Version.

German "ß" = American "ss"

This character is the "ESSET". Please be aware the Germans can be "case sensitive" too. The "ß" symbol is normally
only used to represent the lower case use of "ss". There may be a document where
the spelling is in capital letters, and you will see the "SS" letters. Of course, you will find exceptions.
English translations have occasionally interpreted/spelled the "ß" as "ff".

This completes our current knowledge of Blißmer in Germany

Franz and Marie were known to be in Denmark, but the name may have ended there.

U.S. Census indicates a young boy Benjamin Blissmer in Ohio (1840).
He may have been the son of a Gottfried Blissmer,
who may have been the son of a Gottfried Blissmer in Moscow,
who may have been the son of one of these German Blissmer.

Ohio Census, 1860, has a Carl Blissmer from Hannover, wife Luise, and 3 children.
Later years seem to show a spelling change to Blissman and Blessman.

NOTE: Oct 2002, the connection has been established to St. Petersburg, Russia.
The family is Johann George Gottfried Blissmer and Catharina Nissen, and their 2 children.
With 6 deaths occuring in St. Petersburg,
plus the 2 children, this now gives us 8 names to investigate.

Sept 2003. Contact is made with a living distant relative of the Russian Blissmer. This produces a Johanne Christian Samuel Blissmer as being married to a Julie Dorothee Franciska Möller, and having 2 children, Marguerita and Georg Blissmer. The data is vague, but every clue is important. Data also indicates a Johann Christian Blissmer being married to an Amalie Josephine Winrich. This seems to confirm the names shown on the Volkovo Tombstone (St. Petersburg). Blissmer of Russia.
