Girl, 8, Dies After Being Hit By
Auto
Brenda Kay Logan Injured Fatally on Walnut
St.
An 8 year old girl was killed Saturday while
returning to her home from a visit with her
grandmother.
She was Brenda Kay Logan, a daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Howard (sic.) Logan, 3012 Walnut St.
The child was struck by a car at 5:45 p.m. as she crossed Walnut St., after
leaving the home of her grandmother, Mrs. Betty Austin, 3041 Walnut
St.
She died an hour later at Mercy Hospital from a
fractured skull, fractures of both legs, broken ribs, a punctured lung and
multiple cuts and bruises. She was taken to the hospital by Mart Glynn
ambulance.
Police said Brenda attempted to cross the
street in front of 3031 Walnut St. and apparently ran from the north curb into
the path of a westbound auto driven by Harold Charles, 26, of 1553 Second St,
West Portsmouth.
The child, a third-grade pupil at
Garfield School, was Portsmouth’s third traffic victim of the
year.
Mrs. Lillie Jordan, 73, of 672 Gallia St.
Sciotoville, died Friday morning in Mercy Hospital from injuries suffered in a
similar accident nearly a month ago.
Mr. Charles
told police he saw the child and applied his brakes, but couldn’t avoid the
accident. Patrolmen said the auto skidded 96 feet before striking the
child.
The tragedy struck the family with
force.
At 7:32 p.m. Saturday the fire department
rescue squad was called to the home of Mrs. Austin, 68, who apparently was
overcome with shock.
The rescue squad was called
again at 8:42 p.m. and administered oxygen to Mrs. Logan. She was moved to
Portsmouth General Hospital by a Melcher ambulance.
The squad was called at 4:06 p.m. Sunday to treat Mr. Logan. Firemen
administered oxygen for five minutes.
Born July 6, 1953, in
Portsmouth, Brenda was a daughter of Howard (sic) and Delores Austin
Logan.
Surviving besides the parents are two
brothers, Gary of Columbus and Marvin, 226 Maple St., West Portsmouth; three
sisters, Mrs. Ellen Webb, 627 Calvert’s Lane, West Portsmouth, Mrs. Bronna
Seibert, 703 Calvert’s lane, West Portsmouth, and Jennifer, at home; her
maternal grandmother, Mrs. Austin, and the paternal grandfather, Eslie Logan,
513 ½ Second St.
She was a member of the New Boston
Apostolic Church.
Funeral services are to be at 2
p.m. at the church with Rev. L. J. Roshon officiating. Burial is to be in
Memorial Burial Park under direction of Emrick Funeral Home.

Husband Follows His Wife In
Death
Just a few hours after his beloved wife had
dropped dead suddenly, George Lowder, prominent merchant of Quincy, Ky.,
passed into the Great Beyond, Monday evening at 6:30 o’clock. Death was due to
pneumonia fever, with which he had been ill for several days, but it is thought
that the shock of his wife’s sudden death hastened the end. Worry over her
husband’s illness is thought to have brought on the attack of heart failure
which caused Mrs. Lowder’s death also.
Mr. Lowder
was one of the most prominent men of Quincy, and had been identified with its
growth of the past several years. He was a consistent booster for Quincy, while
his reputation for honesty and fair dealing in business extended for miles
around in every direction. He and his wife were very devoted to each other and
formed an ideal couple, greatly respected in that community. Mr. Lowder had many
friends in Portsmouth, who will be grieved to learn of his
demise.
Mrs. and Mrs. Lowder are survived by seven
children, Harry W. of Elk Valley, Tenn., J. M. and Jasper D. both living at
home, the latter’s former representative of Lewis county in the Kentucky
legislature; and George, now in the United States army; Mrs. Emma Vanbiber of
Leatherwood, Ky., Mrs. Mollie Willis of Garrison, Ky., and Mrs. Tilda Felty of
Tygart, Ky.
A double funeral will be held Wednesday
morning at 8 o’clock at the Quincy Christian church in charge of Rev. Moore and
the Quincy Lodge of Masons. Interment will be in the Thomas Cemetery, seven
miles back of Quincy. Both Mr. and Mrs. Lowder were devout members of the
Christian church, by which their loss will be keenly felt.

appeared in the Tuesday, Apr. 13, 1915 issue of the Portsmouth Daily Times. Both
George W. and Josephine are buried in the Quincy Cemetery, Quincy, Lewis Co.,
