Van Bibber Pioneers Electronic Newsletter
Volume 1, Number 10   ·   August 1997

Greetings from the editor: Apparently, my last call for new articles worked like a charm. You can see the results of a lot of hard work by several individuals below. My thanks to all who sent articles or queries for this issue of the newsletter.

These past few weeks I have been surfing the Internet in search of sites related to the Van Bibber and related families and was astounded by the number of sites that the search engines located. Many of the home pages did not relate to genealogy (anything from dead professional wrestlers to horror movie producers to real estate sales), but there were many web sites that did contain genealogical information that related to our Van Bibber and related families. Some of the home pages are web sites done by our own subscribers and they contain GEDCOMS and other information on the Van Bibber and related families. I urge you to visit these home pages, if you have the capability, and see the work that these people have done. Some of the sites are by non subscribers, but nevertheless contain some valuable information. Other sites contain historical information about the Van Bibbers and related lines and are interesting and informative.

Many of these web sites are listed below in the body of the newsletter for your information, but I did not list queries that the search engines found at GENWEB sites because the queries were by subscribers to the Van Bibber Pioneers. I hope you will visit all of the web sites listed and perhaps find some missing ancestor or descendant of your Van Bibber or other family.

Don't forget to send me the sites on the Internet you find interesting even if they do not pertain to the Van Bibber and related families history and genealogy.

We now have one-hundred and six members.

DRAPER MANUSCRIPTS

By Dick Walker <[email protected]>

Here is the first segment of the Draper Manuscripts I transcribed. Words I could not understand have been replaced with "??". Misspelled words are transcribed as written.

It is from Section C23, Microfile No. 0889110. It consists of letters to Lyman Draper in response to Draper's questions about Daniel Boone. I looked for all the letters which contained references to the Van Bibber family. Remember, Draper was planning on writing a biography of Boone and this is the way he went about filling gaps in the historical record. Unfortunately, Draper's letters posing the questions were not always available.

Another problem is that the people being queried are usually the grandchildren of those who were involved in a particular action. Everything is "word of mouth."

The page numbers are those in the microfilm reel. This should help everyone find a particular letter if they so desire. One nice thing about the microfilm is that the signatures are included (as they are obviously not in my transcription). It could be a thrill seeing your ancestor's signature.

For your information, Draper never did publish his biography of Daniel Boone. However, I found some of the same material included in a biography of Boone written by someone else.

Letter from E. K. Scholl

Mr. L. Draper - dear Sir: yours of the 15th of the instant is before me and I shall to the best of my ability answer your interogatories in the order as stated: John Stuart was burnt or supposed to as the body of a man was found when some Indian had raided. 2nd, ?? I recalled the circumstance but not the name. 3rd, I remember hearing my father talk of all those men but not being connected, I cannot tell anything satsfactory.

Peter Scholl was born Sept. 15, 1754 , died Sept. 11, 1821 being 67 years lacking 4 day. He was born in Virginia in this connection I will give you the biography of the father first. Jacob Scholl was born in Germany. Came to ?? in an early day

12. There is 2 sons of Uncle Joseph Scholl living in Caliway County, MO. To wit, Marquis & Joseph and one of Jesse Boon's sons who named Mathias. He is a grandson of the Boones, also a daughter.

13. Samuel Boon of Caliway County, MO is a son of George Boon. Isaac Vanbeber is dead. ?? K. Scholl is a son of Joseph Scholl. He was the son of Joseph, my uncle.

Letter from L. W. Boggs

To Lyman Draper, Esq.

Roxobelle Farm, Napa Valley

Madison, Wisconsin Napa Co., CA, Jany 18, 1857

Dr Sir. I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your esteemed favor of 22nd Nov last and have to tender you an apology for not attending to your previous communication on the same subject. I had aleays intended to do so after the receipt of your prior communication to reply, but neglected to do so, until I thought so much time had elapsed that perhaps the little

information I could give you would be of no service to you. I will now however with more promptness endeavor to make amends for my former neglect although I am fearful you will be somewhat disappointed by the unimportance of the facts commended - I will proceed at once to answer your several questions as far as it is in my power to do so.

To your 1st question. I answer we have not - I once had some old commissions?? of Col. Danl Boone in my possession. One was a commission as Cap'n in his Majesty's Service to command the several garrisons against the Shawnee Indians granted by Lord Viscount Dunmore, Gov. of Virginia, under the Colonial Govt. Another commission as Colonel signed by Patrick henry, Gov. of Virginia, a prior one as Major by some other Gov. of VA & one as Sheriff, Fayette County, KY, & perhaps some others that I do not remember.

These papers I sent to Washington at the time that the heirs of Col. D. Boone applied to Congress to place them on the same footing (as to pay and Land grants) as the heirs of the Officers of the Virginia line. As Col. Boone was not an officer of the Virginia line but served with them - these papers I confided to Wm H. Ashley, then a member of H. Rep. from Missouri -

the Bill passed the House but failed in the Senate - these old Commissions most likely remain in the archives of either the H of Rep or Senate at Washington. It would be propoer for me to remember here to remark that Col. Dan Boone has never received one dollar compensation either in land or money from the State of Virginia or the U. States for his military services, although he was some fourteen years engaged in such service - Your second question I am unable to answer - In realtion to your first question we are fortunate enough to have in our papers a record of the ages of Jesse B. Boone and wife and the ages of their children which I herewith enclose you - where Jesse B. Boone was born I do not know but presume he was born in Kentucky. I think on Stones now in Borbon County, KY. This is however uncertain - the date of the death of his oldest child you can very nearly ascertain as it died in infancy (it was a girl and named Jeramima on

the record it is painted Jeremiah, a mistake of the printer.) Harriett was born in 1794 so that there was only one year between the 1st and 2nd child.

Consequently the death of the 1st child must have occurred within 1, 2 or 3 months after it was born.

The date of Jesse B. Boone's marriage we have no means of ascertaining precisely, except from the record enclosed, he had married young, not more than 18 or 19 years of age. It must have been very early in 1792 or late in 1791, he was married to Cloe Vanbibber, a daughter of Col. John Vanbibber of Point Pleasant, VA. The death of his wife occurred in August 1822 in

Callaway Co., Missouri at the residence of her son-in-law, Col. Wyncook Warner. Jesse Boone herself died December 22, 1821 at St. Louis, Missouri, he was at the time of his death a member of the House of Rep. of Mo from Montgomery County, was taken sick during the session and died a few days after the adjournment. The corpse was taken to his home in Montgomery Co.

and burried the day after Christmas.

Jesse B. Boone migrated from Greenup County, Kentucky to Montgomery County,

Missouri in the Spring of 1815. In the War of 1812 & 1815, Jesse B. Boone was aide to Genl (afterwards Gov.) Disha of Kentucky in the Campaign of 1813 (Shelby's Campaign). He was at the Battle of the Thames. This I know personally as I was myself there at the same time & met with him frequently. I was then about 17 or 18 years of age. He toured our Company and requested permission to fight in our ranks at the skirmish (the day before the main battle at the bridge across the Thames. His own Brigade was in the rear that day but hearing the firing in front he got permission to leave and found the troops in front. Our boys were delighted to have him

for our company & he was joyfully welcomed. I have no knowledge of what Indian fights or skirmishes in which he may have participated in the Point Pleasant region

Page 27 - 274:

at that time a sister of Mrs. Jeramiah Boone's. You may well imagine that the meeting was a joyful one on both sides. They were shortly afterwards married & many of their descendents reside now in Missouri & California. The girls in them days were better trained to woodcraft and

seems they had more presence of mind in emergencies than in the present day.

I believe that I have now answered all your questions as fully as I was able to and if the information will be of any service to you we will be grateful. The paper you have sent requesting my own and my wife's signature, not withstanding our great desire to oblige you, I do not really

see how we can certify to a matter we have not seen, although we are confident that you would not publish anything that could cause us to regret having given you this evidence of our confidence. We have therefore concluded to oblige you in this matter & would be pleased to receive a copy of the work when published & the copy of 2 vols. of collections published

by the Wisconsin Hist Society of which you are Editor. Wishing you success in your enterprise of lushing a happing this life. I am respectfully, L. M. Boggs.

Mr. Lyman C. Draper: Sir,

In response to inquiries I will give you such information as I have been able to get hol of. Old Sammy Boone is still living though getting quite frail with the weight of age. Capt. Isaac Van Bebber is living though I'm quite unable to inform you of his whereabouts - the vigilance and energy of a detective would hardly keep the "run" of him, for he is literally cosmopolitan in his habits and in proof of the assertion I will mention that he has been in the following places in the last two years to wit: Montana, Washington, Utah, oregon, California, Kansas, nebraska, Illinois,

Canada, Maine, Alabama, Tennessee, and the Sandwich Islands and I know not what others. he was here a month or two during the winter and went from here to St. Joseph and spoke of going from there to Denver City. He promised to write to me but so far has failed to do so. Maj. Ewing Van bebber is living in California. It was the Captain I presume from whom you rec'd teh letters of which you spoke. The old Major Isaac Van Bebber, the father of Isaac and Ewing has been dead 27 years - J. M. Boone and Mrs. James L. Henderson are living. Stephen Hempstead I think is dead. Major John Gibson is living - I could not find out positively where. Col. Nathan

Mr. Draper, Dear Sir,

I yesterday received your note of the c-ullom (?) and on which you requested me to give you some of the memories of my parents and grandparentage? which I will do so far as my memory serves me at present.

My grandfather Van Bebber was born in Maryland, 12 miles from Baltimore and before he married, him and his two brothers emigrated to Greenbriar, Virginia. Their names as follows: my Grandfather Isaac, Mathias and James.

Shortly after they went to Virginia, Isaac went over into North Carolina and there mrrried a planter's daughter by the name of Davis, and I have heard my father speak of hard feelings that arose bwteen Davis and his son-in-law about matters of religion. Davis and his family belonged to the high church of England and Van Bebber called himself a convert from that church which Davis knew nothing about. At the time my Grandfather and grandmother were married, which caused my a great deal of satisfaction an ill feeling between Davis and his son-in-law which lasted during the lifetime of my Grandfather, my Grandfather being an old Side Baptist preacher. So after his death his father-in-law came over and had his grandchildren christened high churchmen, with the exception of the three eldest, Nancy, Patty and Peter, who obstinately refursed to accept to belong to the High Church of England.

John, James and Isaac (that was my father) they were christened. My grandmother still belonging to that church. Now my father always gave his birth on his account was 1771, Oct 12 and was born in Greenbriar country, and died in 1840 at his son-in-law's, G. W. Burt, in Callaway Co., MO. His father was killed by the Indians on big conkaway in 1772, and in 1842, there was an old man stayed at my house by the name of Gluze moving with hs son-in-law from Powell's Valley, TN and he had in his possession an old family Bible that he stated to me that he bought at Howard Eakin, my fathers Brother-in-laws sale, it having been my Grandfather's Bible and

there I saw the record of my grandfathers vaunduly (?), the births of his children in his own hand, write as ? and I then took the date down ? on my father's birth as that record gave it. Isaac was born 1768, that is the record of my Grandfather to gather with the record of the death of my

Grandfather. Now my Grandmother after the death of my Grandfather married a man by the name of Griffin and my father being the youngest to live with his uncle until James Davis, a wealthy tobacco planter in North Carolina where he remained until he was grown. He then returned to see his relatives; there fell in with Colonel Andrew Louis and three of Andrew Louises sun; Louis Wetzel, who were bound for Big Kanawha it being the frontier of Virginia in defense of their colonel being the brother of Capt. Charles Louis that was eventually mortally wounded in the same engagement that my Grandfather fell and died in thirty hours after he was carried from the battleground. My father's notions was then if he could get to kill three Indians he would have full revenge for them having killed his father.

So after they got down to Galapelice, him and Davis (?) Wetzel was sent out as spies, so they reconoitered the country raound about, and in a very short time they became well acquainted with the country and Wetzel being well acquainted with Indian hunting and, as they was out there when the fine of a gun Wetzel proposed to my father that he should remain there and

he would proceed alone and would see what he could discover. My father was anxious to accompany him when Wetzel told him that two men was easier discovered than one, and if he got in to alynadeal of dannger where their was many Indians he could out-run them, and if his ammuition held out, he cared not, for all he wanted was, that they would promise him, he would

shot and run and load, and as long as ammunition held out, he could have fun, and when that gave out, their was but one Indian that could run near as fast as he could. Get him in a chase after him, he intended to scalp him after getting him out of reach of the balance of the warriors, so after

giving many reasons, my father consented to remain their intil sundown, at which time Wetzel was to certainly return. After Wetzel had left, he saw a deer coming crippling along and behind it he discovered an Indian trailing the deer, the deer passed within thirty yards of him, and he waited until the Indian came within forty yards of him when he fired upon him. The Indian sprang forward fetched a?ore and fell upon the ground. He had ? fast loaded his gun and then approached his victim with a great deal of coution, and while viewing him he heard Wetzel coming, and he then discovered him, he ran up, and informed that their was plenty of Indians making for that

spot and for them to make good their retreat, Wetzel taking with him the Indian's powder horn and pouch that contained the balls. When they returned that night, they found some ?one recruits had got their heads by Simon Kenton and Neal Washburn (?) that I have talked a great deal of. He was a great Indian fighter. The next day the party of Kenton in which their was a celibrated man for Indian hunting by the name of Neal Washburn. My father described him as being big, possessed of a great deal of personal strength and a man of undaunted courage and never-tiring energy and excellent marksman and good unbadimador (?). Then teen in numbers all started for the point where Indians had been seen the evening before. When they came to the spot where this Indian was killed, they discovered that o party of Indians had removed him. so they followed up until they found where he hd been concealed under driftwood and was raised, and Kenton drew his legin and put them on and wore them himself. My father then continued in the service for

five years. He was in many engagements closely fought by our American troops headed by General Anthony Wayne. Most some portion of the time with Mr. Breckinridge that is still living in St. Louis City. I have stayed at Mr. Breckinridge with my father and have when ? my father and him told of their services together during the time Wetzel and my father had been in close engagements and had been successful. Wetzel, when in company with a man by the name of lure fishing in a canoe with out their rifles only one mile from the past, was fired upon by some Indians. Wetzel being shot through the left arm which resulted in Wetzel loosing his left arm, which made him unfit for service. I saw Louis Wetzel in 1818. He stayed all night with my father and I heard them talk til midnight and many of their encounters I will try to send you, and you must have some patience with me as I have written this in a ?unk and shall be still in a fury having a great deal to do and a wife to hunt up and many between now and Christmas, and you can't put this together until you get the balance so far as W is concerned which will close when I tell you what Wetzel said to my father when he held his arm while Dr. Sagnin took it off.

Yours in haste, Isaac Van Bebber.

Write to Albert G. Boone, Westport, MO, he is a grandson of Col. Daniel Boone, and an old acquaintance of my father. His father, Jesse Boone, died at St. Charles in our first State legislature in 1820. Look over the incoherant manner this is put together and expect the next to be worse.

Yours,

Isaac Vanbibber

I have yet to contact Gary R. Hawpe [FGS 12 Sep 1992] 1623 Scottsdale Dr., Arlington, TX 76018. I knew James Stonewall when I was a very small boy but can not remember him ever talking about his mother's family.

I have lots of work yet to do before I should publish any of my tree. You are welcome to use anything from my web page that you would like. A lot is unproved at this point and is so noted.

CENSUS RECORDS

By GARY R HAWPE <[email protected]>

For the Newsletter:

Dear VanBibber researchers,

My name is Gary R. Hawpe and I have been researching the VanBibber family since the later part of 1988. Over the last almost nine years I have recorded thousands of VanBibber descendants on the census records. I have tried to record every male VanBibber from the 1850 census up to the latest 1920. On the male Vanbibbers I feel comfortable in saying I have located about 95% of them during this time span. There are a few I've not been able to locate, since not all states were soundexed for the census year 1910. When the females married I have also tried to trace their families down to the 1920 census. Basically, if they are a VanBibber descendant I have tried to trace them.

I'm currently a Sergeant Major in the USMC and stationed in Iwakuni, Japan which I arrived over here last month. My unit plans to arrive back in the states the first part of January at our home base Miramar, California (San Diego). My family lives in Draper, Utah where I plan on retiring in a couple of years. I brought all my census records on disk and occupy myself of an

evening doing some updating on them. The reason I am writing this letter to the VanBibber newsletter is I want to be able to help you with the census records on your VanBibber family. I have spent countless hours of researching, recording, and typing of these records. They are all on disk and are there for the asking. I start with the individual when he or she first shows up on a

census (1850) and up to the 1920 census or until they died. I try to list their parents, whom and when they married, birth and death dates if known, and where buried. All of my files are formatted in Lotus Amipro so hopefully if you don't use this program you can convert to it. Please start off by limiting yourself to five census records as I do not know what the reaction is

going to be. Plus we will be on the road a lot come the end of this month as we plan on spending time in Australia, Okinawa, and Korea.

The information I will need from you is the person's name (male or female) their parents and spouse if known. If you know the state this could also be helpful.

The following are the female lines I have done a lot of census research on:

Peter VanBibber and Ellinor VanBibber - FULFER, LIFORD, KING/ZUMWALT.

John VanBibber and Margaret Chrisman - RENFRO, WAGLEY, ROGERS, KINCAID, SHARP,

ROSS, OWENS.

Isaac VanBibber and Elizabeth Hays - HICKERSON, ESTILL, TUNNELL, BURT, DAVIS,

SAMPSON.

George Dixon and Sophrina VanBibber - DIXON, CLEM, DAVIS.

John Jesse VanBibber and Rachel Greenlee - SMITH, HART, TILLIS, SAYRE.

Matthias VanBibber and Margaret Robinson - HILL, NEBERGALL, KEENAN.

Jacob VanBibber and Sarah Miller - HENSLEY, HANEY, JEFFORDS.

James VanBibber and Lois Reynolds - LAWSON, THOM, GAMMON.

Jesse B. Boone and Chloe VanBibber - BABER, BOONE, CURRY, MUSICK, WARNER,

BOGGS, HENDERSON.

Goodrich Slaughter and Hannah VanBibber - REED, REYNOLDS, SLAUGHTER, FRY,

NORTON.

John Reynolds and Miriam VanBibber - PUTNEY.

Andrew Donnally and Marjory VanBibber - DONNALLY, LEWIS, FRY, TRUSLOW.

If your family name does not appear above do not let that stop you from requesting. Every female VanBibber that I have recorded has her own census record and I may not of listed her if she is further down the line. Give it a try, the most I can say is I don't have them recorded yet. And let's not forget the YOAKUM family. Yes, I have them too! Just ask Earl Quintrell or

Steve Smith. If you are off the YOAKUM line I want you to know I have over 1,000 individuals on census records from MARTHA VANBEBBER and GEORGE YOAKUM. This includes the ones from Sangamon County, Illinois who Steve Smith says are Martha's descendants too. If I didn't believe you were correct Steve, I wouldn't of recorded them. Anyway, they are here for the asking and I will send them to you over the e-mail as a file attachment.

CORRECTION

From: DeLynda Ritter <[email protected]>

Thanks to a keen eye, I as informed of a few mistakes on my family line I posted. Under Nathan Boone's daughter, Melcina I show her first husband James' date of death as June 16, 1900. Actually, this was Melcina's date of death.

Also, I show on Letitia Maxwell's page that her child Sarah Angeline Maxwell's death as 1941. But I show Sarah's death on her own page as 1949. The 1949 date is the correct one. The first entry was a typo.

And, I've been questioned on Daniel's date of birth. I'd like some feed back. My records have always shown Nov. 2, 1734. I've seen on the Internet that it is listed as Dec. 22, 1734. I looked this up in the World book Encyclopedia and it shows Nov. 2, 1734, also. Does anyone

have any info on this?

QUERIES

Paula Uthe <[email protected]>

Query #1

I am trying to document direct father-son lineage for the following:

Calvin Van Bibber born about 1816 in Claiborne TN who married Barthena Van Bibber (his cousin), in 1850 in Ray Co. Missouri. Calvin died in 1911 in Mendocino CA.

His father: Jacob born abt 1786 Botetourt VA . Married Catherine Guthrie 1818 - Claiborne TN

His father: Peter born Aug 1757 Botetourt. Married Eleanor Van Bibber (his cousin), in June 1785 in VA

Peter is the son of Isaac and Sarah Davis. Eleanor is the daughter of Peter and Marjery Bounds.

Isaac and Peter are the sons of Peter and Ann Honriette.

Can anyone furnish information, such as copies of bible pages, wills that would reference the familia linkage, obits, etc.

Query #2

Does anyone know the whereabouts of a family bible that was in the possession of Margaret Felicity Van Bibber Carden ( she was the daughter of Andrew Donnally).

Margaret married James Burrus Carden.

From: Barbara J. Brothers <[email protected]>

Any connections to Peter Van Bibber b. abt 1680 and/or William and Jane Rentfroe b. abt 1680? I am descended from: Esther Van Bibber b. abt 1710 m. James Rentfroe b. abt 1710>Mary Rentfroe b.1736 in Virginia d. 1806 Coles Creek, near Natchez, Mississippi m. abt 1754 James Cole b.4-30-1732 Newcastle, Delaware or Chester, Penn. d. May 19, 1794 Coles Creek, near Natchez, Miss.

The first two children of James Cole and Mary Rentfroe were born abt 1756-1758, Black Water River, Bedford County, Virginia. Third, fourth, and fifth children were born 1760-1764 at Ash Pole Swamp, Bladen County, N.C.; the last three were born 1766-1770 in Craven County, South Carolina

Would like information on Van Bibber and Rentfroe--the above is about the extent of my information on those two lines. (I do have a lot of information on the Cole line).
