SUCCESS STORY

By Gary Hawpe ([email protected]

Marie,

Thanks for the e-mail response on Thomas J. VanBibber, the husband of Mary J. Lumsden. I will try to explain who I think he is and why. First I will clear up the identity of the other Thomas VBs who you mentioned. The Thomas who was the sibling of Fannie and Lamard and the Thomas who was the son of Cyrus VB and Sophia Baker is the same individual. If you will look below at the family of Cyrus VB Jr. you will see what I mean.

CYRUS VANBIBBER JR. (6 Apr 1826 - 20 Sep 1900)

Born in Kentucky the son of Cyrus VanBibber Sr. and Mary S. Rachel Timberlake. Married (1st) Sophia Baker (11 Dec 1834 - 15 May 1870) on January 1, 1855 in Greenup Co., KY. Sophia was the daughter of Marshall Baker and Mary Carnegy. Married (2nd) Abiline Clutts on December 17, 1872 in Greenup Co., KY. Cyrus and Sophia are buried in the VanBibber family cemetery, near Red Hot, Greenup Co., KY.

Children:

  1. Marshall VanBibber (28 May 1856 - 13 Sep 1921)
  2. Lamard VanBibber (17 Jan 1858 - 20 Aug 1929)
  3. Lemara VanBibber (17 Jan 1858 - died young)
  4. Fannie VanBibber (1 Sep 1861 - 5 Jun 1885)
  5. Henry VanBibber ( May 1864 - after 1920 ) Lived in Colorado.
  6. Thomas VanBibber ( Jan 1868 - after 1920 ) Lived in Texas.

The above Thomas VanBibber is the one who married Inez Johnson in Greenup County, Kentucky. This is the Inez Johnson that married a VanBibber which Cheryl Kenter was asking about in a query in VB newsletter Vol. 1, No. 3. They lived in Carson County, Texas and had three children; Howard, Marshall, and an infant that died young.

Now to the Thomas J. VanBibber who married Mary J. Lumsden on January 24, 1893in New Madrid Co., MO. I think, and I say this because I am not positive, he was the son of Isaac VanBibber and Missouri Ann Sutton. First of all, in the attachment file enclosed, you will see I have him and Mary on the 1900 Scott Co., MO. census and the 1910 New Madrid Co., MO. census. Thomas is listed as a 34 year old male, married seven years and born in Indiana as is both of his parents on the 1900 census. On the same census you will see it says he has a son Albert, age 42. Of course you and I know this is an error and probably meant to say brother. The only Albert that I have on a census that was born during that time frame in Indiana, shows up with his parents Isaac VB and Missouri Sutton on the 1860 of Warrick County, Indiana. Thomas was not born until 1865 and would not show up on this census. Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate Isaac and Missouri on an 1870 census as of yet. When I do, I feel confident it will list a five year old son Thomas. On the 1920 census it shows Thomas as a widow living in St. Louis Co., MO. You will find his two sons, Clarence and Hugh living in a boys home in Hendricks Co., Indiana.

At present, I do not know what happened to his five daughters and if there was more children born before Mary's death.

I hope I have been of some help and only wish I could of positively identified Thomas J. VB who married Mary J. Lumsden. My gut feeling tells me we are going to find out he was the son of Isaac and Missouri VanBibber.

OBITUARY OF WILLIAM RUFUS DIXON

By Gary R. Hawpe ([email protected])

Obituary of William Rufus Dixon provided to this VanBibber family researcher by Kay D. Butler of The Dalles, Oregon. Obituary was from a Fennimore, Grant County, Wisconsin, Newspaper, Edition for Wednesday, April 10, 1907.

Identification:

Peter VanBibber Jr. and Marguery Bounds

Sophronia VanBibber and George Dixon

Peter Dixon and Lucinda Long

William Rufus Dixon and Emily Caroline Mitchell

WILLIAM DIXON -- Eventful Life of the Departed Early Pioneer. -----

William Rufus Dixon was born in Kanawha Co., West Virginia, April 17, 1817 and passed to his reward from the home of his son Ora, with whom he had made his home for many years, March 29, 1907, having almost completed four score years and ten.

In 1837 the grandfather, George Dixon and all the surviving sons, moved into Warren Co., Indiana, where all the older members of the family died. In November, 1846, Wm. Dixon came to Grant Co. and has been a resident of it over sixty years. Though he has not been able to move out of the house for over four years on account of an injury received in a fall on the ice, his mind was bright till within a few days of his decease and his reminiscences of his early life in Grant County and in the East were always of great interest.

Dec. 16, 1847, Mr. Dixon was married to Miss Emily Mitchell. They were the second couple married in the town of Fennimore.

Mr. Dixon had little idea of remaining when he came to Grant county and was about to return to Indiana when he was asked to take a school. He was willing, and a subscription school was opened in what were then known as the Switzer and Walker settlements. Many of the children who attended came from a long distance. There was no schoolhouse, but a log cabin was put up on Section 7--a typical frontier school house; there were no glass windows, but open spaces were left between the logs and covered with greased paper. Cold draughts blew through the building in the winter. The seats were slabs brought from Prairie du Chien. Holes were bored for the legs. This school house did not fit in with the present-day notions, but it answered for the times, and here in 1846 and 1847 Mr. Dixon taught the first school in the town. He was to receive ten dollars a month, and board around, but money was scarce and he never secured the full amount of his wages. He had about twenty scholars and he taught the same school the following winters. School commissioners had been elected, but they gave little or no attention to school matters, and Mr. Dixon taught his first term without a certificate. In 1847 he was elected school commissioner, and he was really the first commissioner to give any attention to the public schools. In early life he was also tax collector and served on the town board for two years. He was both assessor and collector in 1871 and 1872.

When Mr. Dixon settled on section 30, in the town of Fennimore, in the spring of 1848, the surrounding country was wild and unbroken. He improved a farm and afterward exchanged it for one north of town, now owned by John Zuear, which he cultivated for 20 years. The he sold it to his son Ora, and made his home with the latter, removing to the village in 1899.

Mr. Dixon lost his wife in 1855, and on April 12, 1860, he was married to Mrs. Harriet Johnson. She also passed away in 1864. Of the four children from his first wife, only one, Ora, is living; and of the three from his second, two, Emily, (Mrs. C.L. Streeter) of Falkton, S.D., and Walter G., of West Chester, Pa.

Mr. Dixon was a man of great force of character and earnest in his convictions: a model citizen, honest and upright, in every respect. In politics he was a Republican. For over half a century he was a member of the Methodist church, loved and honored by all who knew him. His was a long and useful life, and his was a happy old age. Even in his affliction, which confined him to his room for four long years, he was cheerful and resigned to the Divine call, only waiting for the summons to enter the eternal Kingdom.

Interment was on Easter Sunday at the Switzer cemetery, services being held at the M.E. church, with appropriate addresses by Rev. Bird and Lewis.-------

I am descended from Nathan Davis who married Lucretia Russell in Mason County, Va/WV in 1832. Has anyone done any Davis research, on Sarah Davis' family who married the VanBibber?

Has anyone researched her Davis line? Nathan Davis had a son Lewis and they lived in the Point Pleasant area. Lewis married Marguerite Collins, daughter of Thomas Collins of Ireland. I would be more than willing to trade information. Thank you.

From Dick Walker ([email protected])

Goodwife Bibber of the Salem Witch Trials in MA. Perhaps one of you can shed some light on a question a friend and I have. My friend's ancestor was accused and hung as a "Witch" during the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. One of her accusers was a "Goodwife" or "Goody" Bibber. The Goodwife or Goody were titles and not names, of course. In our readings of the events of the trials, there is never a mention of "Goodwife" Bibber's first name or a name for her husband.

Is it possible that "Goodwife" Bibber is a member of our Van Bibber family? My friend delights in telling me that my ancestor was responsible in having her ancestor hung as a witch. It would be nice to have some information.

My branch of the Van Bibber family (John) moved to Powell's Valley, Tennessee around 1796. He lived on land that was part of the land given by the North Carolina Legislature to those killed during the Indian raid at Freeland's Station on 15 Jan. 1781. The grant was called "The Henderson Grant." Earl Quintrell provided me with part of an article he wrote on the Grant but it was not complete. When I asked him, he could not remember the place where the article was published.

I am most interested because another line of mine, Lucas, was involved in the Grant. Robert Lucas was one of those killed at Freeland's Station and John Van Bibber ended up owning part of the land grant received by the survivors of Robert Lucas. I wonder how that transaction took place?

Of real interest, the survey in Powell's Valley was done by a Walker. I have no evidence that that Walker is an ancestor, but one can never tell. Can anyone please refer me to sources of information on "The Henderson Grant?"

3. Has anyone considered putting together a complete family tree for the Van Bibber family? Perhaps if we can find a "clearing house" we could all submit our information and develop a comprehensive tree. Any volunteers?

From Christine O'Hara (Not a subscriber) ([email protected])

I was reading the Nov. newsletter having found it due to a Family Tree Maker search. I noticed that in the article on Geo Stephens there was a mention of a JM Sharrock in Rusk, TX. Does anyone happen to know more about this person? I am a Sharrock researcher (anytime, anywhere) and the editor of our Sharrock searcher newsletter. I would appreciate any info.

Thanks.
