Van Bibber Pioneers Electronic Newsletter
Volume 2, Number 3   ·   January 1998

Greetings:

We have started down a new road with the New Year. Now the Van Bibber Pioneers have their own e-mail discussion list and a brand new look at the web page thanks to webmaster extraordinary, Darrell L. Smith. If you haven't checked out the new look of the web page please do so and sign in on the guest page.

If you haven't signed up for the e-mail discussion list, please do so as soon as you can. We presently have about fifty subscribers to the list. Subscription instructions will be mailed upon request.

Take a look at the number of new subscribers. I could hardly keep up with the growth of the newsletter subscribers this month. This is one of the largest growth periods we have had since the first few issues of the newsletter. I am gratified at the number of Van Bibber newsletter subscribers that we have in the short history of the newsletter. The great people who make up this newsletter make all the effort of publishing the newsletter and administering the e-mail list worthwhile.

Most importantly, the subscribers and especially one brand new subscriber, Larry P. Cornwell, have given us several new generations and surnames to add to our databases. I believe this new information is important. However, we need to confirm this information with some original research. I challenge each of you to get to the libraries and research centers to find the original sources of this information.

We now have one hundred and fifty-six subscribers.

VAN BIBBBER - NETHERCUTT - WILLIAMS

By Greg Engler ([email protected])

I am seeking someone who may have some data on Elizabeth Vanbibber, daughter of Ezekiel Vanbibber and Susan Rice. I believe that she may have married a William Nethercutt and had 3 children and then married Benjamin Williams. I am also curious as to what happened to the Nethercutts, especially William and his children as they seem to have moved on somewhere.

I am sending what information. I have been able to dig up that gets me to Elizabeth VanBibber being the wife of Benjamin Williams as well as to a William Nethercutt.

Lawrence County Ohio courthouse, Ironton, has records of births of: Dolby, Benj. F. , Martha and Charlie. Father is listed on all records as B. F. (Benjamin) Williams and mother is listed as Elizabeth Van, as Elizabeth Vain, as Elizabeth Vanbewer and as Elizabeth Banbiber on those records.

Apparently Elizabeth married a William Nethercutt before marrying Benjamin Williams and had three children by William Nethercutt. William Nethercutt seems to have disappeared around 1865 and may have perished in the war(???). A record of her marriage to Bennie Williams has not been found as yet.

The initial source that leads me to Elizabeth and Benjamin is an old handwritten letter written by a Mary Belle Whitaker detailing her remembrances of her ancestors as such: (The text below is as it was written by Mary Belle, line by line, words in ( ) are mine).

GREITJEN OP DEN GRAEFF

By Anna L. Lutz ([email protected])

My Krefeld Immigrants had this piece of information for Greitjen op den Graeff. Greitjen op den Graeff, mother of the four children in Germantown, died soon after arrival in Germantown. Herman, her son wrote, "My mother died in Philadelphia on the 19th of November, and was buried in that place". The Original Germantown Families, Robert F. Ulle, Mennonite Family History 1983, P 50.

ISAAC VAN BEBBER OF CLAIBORNE COUNTY TENNESSEE

By Steve Smith ([email protected])

Isaac VAN BEBBER of Claiborne County, Tennessee was the most interesting man I have studied in my 20 something years researching. He was the son of John VAN
BEBBER, Sr., Esquire and Margaret CHRISMAN. He was born April 30, 1790 in RUSSELL County, Virginia near present day Dryden, LEE County, VA. He came to
what was then HAWKINS County, Tennessee in 1796 or earlier with his VAN BEBBER
and YOAKUM family and relatives. His father was very active in the early politics of GRAINGER County when it was formed in 1796 and then later when CLAIBORNE County was formed in 1801. This lifestyle young Isaac grew to love.

He entered the political scene shortly after his 21'st birthday, which was required at that time. His first position was that of Constable. His father, at this time was a magistrate or Justice of the Peace and at times a Chairman of the County Court. John taught Isaac the ways of the law and he was evidently learned at one of the local schools.

The Speedwell Academy which was helped by John VAN BEBBER was most likely his school of learning. This institution was an all male academy in its first beginnings and at one time an education from this school was ranked with a college education. Here the young boys learned such things as law, Latin, math and other useful information for business.

Isaac was well into adulthood when he met and married Mary "Polly" MARTIN,
the daughter of Salathiel MARTIN and Mary COOK. They married about 1816 according to the age of their first child. They had seven children. I am a descendant of John M. VAN BEBBER, the second child, and John's second wife, Elizabeth BEELER, the daughter of Adam BEELER and Susan BOWMAN. John M. VAN BEBBER was also a very colorful character of the Powell Valley along with his father, Isaac VAN BEBBER, Sr. Esquire. He, too, favored politics and became active at a very young age, as his father and grandfather. His first wife was Manerva Jane KINCAID, of the most influential family of Claiborne County. Her parents were William Harrison KINCAID and Susan WILSON. They were the most wealthy family of the Speedwell area, owning many fine farms, plantation homes and slaves. John's first wife, Manerva, and his father-in-law, William Harrison KINCAID both died before the beginnings of the Civil War and John married my grandmother, Elizabeth BEELER.

John's politics apparently were not right for his KINCAID in-laws. They invested heavily in the Southern cause. John did not join the war. William Harrison KINCAID had a younger brother named John KINCAID, II. of neighboring CAMPBELL County in Powell Valley. By the beginnings of the Civil War, he was even more wealthy than his brother William. He invested very heavily into the cause of the Confederacy. He sent several of his sons to fight for them. At about the end of the war someone assassinated John KINCAID, II. The area of Powell Valley, in East Tennessee was heavily dominated for people of the Northern cause. This happened about January 1865. About March 1865, John KINCAID's son, "Little John" KINCAID, III, came back from the war and led a
raid down Powell Valley and killed several men. One of these men was John M.
VAN BEBBER, my gg grandfather. The reasons for this are not clear to me because of the legends handed down through the generations. It appears that maybe John M. VAN BEBBER had converted "Little John" KINCAID's home, which is a beautiful Plantation home and still stands and occupied today, into a hospital for the Northern Army. This did not go over well at all, as you could suppose.

After this, Little John KINCAID went to the state of Missouri and went by the SURNAME of his wife Maggie HUFF. He lived there with other members of the KINCAID, VAN BEBBER, and YOAKUM family and they looked to him as a friend who did what he had to do and no charges were ever brought against him for this.

Isaac VAN BEBBER, Sr., Esquire, by the end of the Civil War was an elderly man. He had retired from the political life and had moved to the Lone Mountain area of CLAIBORNE County, where he had two daughters living. Evidently he and his two eldest sons, John M. and James C., did not agree eye to eye on things. When John M. was killed he left five children by his deceased KINCAID wife and four children with his young bride, Elizabeth. My great grandfather, David Franklin VAN BEBBER, was only about six months old when his father was killed and so did not remember him, but Elizabeth lived until about 1914 and my grandmother SMITH, who was Cora Ann VAN BEBBER, remembered her when she was a young girl and told me many stories about her life.

Isaac VAN BEBBER's first wife, Mary "Polly" MARTIN, died about 1837 or maybe earlier. There is no record of her death date. Her last child was born in
1833. Isaac remarried in July 1839 to Sarah Parker HAMILTON, the daughter of
James HAMILTON, Sr., and Elizabeth "Betsy" WEAR. Sarah was born about 1800 and
so she and Isaac only had one child and evidently this child died at a young age. Both Sarah and Isaac died in the year 1866 and buried in the Lone Mountain district of CLAIBORNE County, TN.

NOTE: These court cases are very important to this researcher, Steve Smith, in identifying and documenting the fact that Isaac VAN BEBBER, Sr., did marry Mary "Polly" MARTIN, the daughter of Salathiel MARTIN and Mary COOK. The pension papers of Salathiel MARTIN refer to "Polly" MARTIN as Mary MARTIN. It is known that Polly is the pet name for Mary.

WILL OF ISAAC VAN BIBBER

By Gary Hawpe (hawpeg@ pendleton.usmc.mil)

The following Last Will and Testament of Isaac VanBibber Jr., the son of Isaac VanBibber and Sarah Davis was located in Warren County, Missouri, Deed Book C, Pages 164-166 by VanBibber Family researcher Gary R. Hawpe of Arlington, Texas on May 1991. It should be noted that Isaac wrote his will in Montgomery County, Missouri. It should also be noted in item #6, of the Will, that he died possessed of land situated in Warren County which accounts for a copy of his Last Will and Testament being in the Warren County Deed Book. One should be aware that the county court house of Montgomery County, Missouri has burned twice and a lot of their records destroyed. This Will was not located in the records of Montgomery County.

I Isaac VANBIBBER of the County of Montgomery and State of Missouri, being strong in body and of sound and disposing mind blessed be the Lord for the same do make and publish this my Last Will and Testament. Amen. Hereby revolking and making void all former wills by me heretofore made.

First - It is my will that my funeral expenses and all my just debts be fully paid.

Second - I give and devise to my youngest son Alphonso B. VANBIBBER all that tract or parcel of land lying East of Loutre Creek on which I have lived for upwards of twenty years, the middle of the main channel of said Loutre Creek making the western boundry line of said tract of land. The same containing upwards of three hundred acres, be the same more or less, to have and to hold the same to him and his heirs and assigns forever.

Third - I give and devise to my grandson, Thomas A. ROBERTS son of Martha ROBERTS, deceased, a tract or parcel of land lying and situated in St. Charles County and described as follows: bounded on the East by land owned by the heirs of Joshua DODSON and an old claim of land formerly owned by Samuel WATKINS, and on the West by land originally granted to Micajob CALLAWAY and on the South by land owned by the heirs of Joshua DODSON, on the North by public land or land claimed by some unknown person, the same containing one hundred and seventy eight acres, be the same more or less, the same deeded to me by Alexander McKOSTNEY and his wife comfort to have and to hold the same to the said Thomas A. ROBERTS his heirs and assigns forever.

Fourth - I give and devise to my eldest daughter, now living, Susannah HICKERSON, one negro girl named MARIAH during her natural life and at her death to the heirs of her body.

Fifth - I give and devise to my youngest daughter, now living, Aretta BERT, one negro girl name MARY, during her natural live and at her death the heirs of her body.

Sixth - I give and further devise all the rest and residue of my property real personal and mixed (after my funeral expenses and just debts are paid out of it) consisting of fifty-five acres and a small fraction over, lying and situated in St. Charles County, bounded on the East by Missouri River, on the Northwest and South by land belonging originally to the heirs of William HAYS Sr., deceased, and an undivided half of between three hundred and fifty or sixty acres lying in Warren

E=2>County which said land is now occupied by Thomas TALBOT and Hale TALBOT which said land was purchased by myself and Doct John JONES at Sheriff sale and for which we have the Sherriff's deed and if said land is lost each of the heirs whom it is willed will of course lose their respective shares and all the personal property of which I may die possessed. In my own right, I devise in the following manner: first

one-ninth part to my grandson Thomas A. ROBERTS

one-ninth part to my eldest daughter Susannah HICKERSON

one-ninth part to the five infant children of Fanny COX they being my grandchildren named Van COX, James COX, Ewing COX, Missouri COX, and Alponso COX, it being the share of the mother,

one-ninth part to my daughter Matilda ESTILL,

one-ninth part to my daughter Elgiva DAVIS,

one-ninth part to my daughter Areta BURT,

one-ninth part to my eldest son Isaac VANBIBBER,

one-ninth part to my second son Ewing A. VANBIBBER,

one-ninth part to my youngest son Alphonso B. VANBIBBER.

The above named fifty-five acres and a fraction and the undivided half of the above named land should I ultimately succeed in getting title to the same, and all the above named personal property of which I die possessed to be sold by my son Ewing A. VANBIBBER executor, the proceed to be divided as specified in said Will above.

And lastly - I herby constitute and appoint my son Ewing A. VANBIBBER to be the executor of this my Last Will and Testament revoking and annulling all former Wills by me made and ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my Last Will and Testament. And I give to my son Ewing A. VANBIBBER the sum of five hundred dollars for his trouble as executor with said amount of money he now has in his hands. I am looking for my grandmother's heritage. Her name was Mattie C. LIFORD. She was born in Claiborne County, TN June 24, 1883. Her uncle may have been Reuben Liford (11/1873) son of Duff C. Liford (1831), son of John Liford and Luvicy VanBIBBER of DEU & VA.

Reuben LIFORD was married to Lucy J. Lawson, who was 16 years his senior. Reuben and Lucy were living with Lucy's mother, Anna Lawson in Claiborne county in 1900 and Mattie (single) and her infant son were included in the household. Mattie had two sons, Clarence Reuben WILLIS (4/1900) and Carl Raeburn WILLIS (6-14-04)in Lone Mountain. Clarence stayed in Claiborne county until his death in 1959. Carl, my father, lived in TN,IL,WI,KY,IN & FL until his death in 1989 in FL. Mattie may have been the daughter of Duff C. or another LIFORD. She had a sister named Daisy LOFTON who was eight years younger than Mattie. I am seeking any leads on Mattie LIFORD and William L. WILLIS (said to be the father of Clarence and Carl).
