Volume 2, Number 6   ·   April 1998

Greetings:

I am sorry for the delay in publishing the newsletter, but it is the end of the school year and I have been busy preparing exams and grading papers. Nevertheless, I believe I can catch up with the proper issues this month (June).

Gary R. Hawpe has been keeping the wires hot with his daily submission of "This Day in Van Bibber History". If you have not subscribed to the e-mail list you should do so to see what he has to offer.

The Van Bibber Pioneers web page as been updated to include some new links, the March issue of the newsletter, and a search engine to the archives of the Van Bibber e-mail discussion list. If you haven't been to the web page you should check it out. The guest book also has some new and interesting entries.

Please notice that we have reached the two-hundred plus mark for subscriptions to the Van Bibber Pioneers newsletter. This is quite a milestone considering we began this venture with ten known researchers on the Internet.

We now have two hundred and four subscribers.

The editor reserves the right to make any corrections or additions.

ISAAC VAN BIBBER II

By Steve Smith ([email protected])

Concerning Isaac VAN BIBBER, II: Here is my best guess with the information available:

Isaac was only a couple of years old when his father was killed in the Battle of Point Pleasant; Oct 10, 1774. After this he continued to live with his mother and family. He was the youngest of seven children born of Isaac VAN BIBBER, I, and Sarah DAVIS. Sarah soon remarried to William GRIFFEY/GRIFFITH. The younger children may have been helped out by their Uncle James DAVIS as far as monetary needs, schooling, and religion. Some of the older children were about old enough by this time to be somewhat self-supportive. I believe it was Uncle James DAVIS who may have sent my gggg grandfather to school, as he was an educated man and spent his entire adult life in public service jobs. In 1786 Peter VAN BEBBER, whom I believe was the oldest male sibling, went into court and declared himself the guardian of his younger brothers and sisters: Nancy, John, James, Matthew, and Isaac.

By this time older sister, Martha, had already married to George YOAKUM, I.
Almost immediately after Peter declared himself guardian he removed to lower Southwest Virginia to about the present day Dryden and with him George YOAKUM, I. Peter had recently wed his first cousin Eleanor VAN BIBBER and George and Patty (Martha) had been wed long enough by this time to have about five or six children. Peter brought along with him his younger siblings except Isaac and perhaps Matthew. It is not known at present what happened to Matthew. I believe Isaac stayed with his mother and step father.

In 1796 the YOAKUM and VAN BEBBER families moved further down the Powell Valley where they lived to the lower part of Powell Valley that fell in the new state of Tennessee when it was formed in June 1796. At this time it is very apparent that upon establishing themselves upon their new farms that Sarah DAVIS/VAN BIBBER/GRIFFEY and her husband, William, joined the family.

They had been living in the GREENBRIER County area of Virginia. Young Isaac
had been well attached to the BOONE family by this time and had worked some at the BOONE trading post. I believe it was at this parting of time or maybe some time earlier that young Isaac decided not to go to Tennessee with the rest of the family but to stay with Daniel BOONE's family. This is the best I have been able to construct with the available data, but I don't believe he was extremely young when he went to live with the BOONE family.

Any Comments are Very Welcome.

This day in VanBibber history: April 30, 1998

On this day, on April 30, 1790, Isaac Van Bebber, Sr, Esquire was born in RUSSELL County, Virginia, the son of John Van Bebber, Sr., Esquire and Margaret CRISMAN.
-----

Isaac is the most interesting character of my Van Bebber Research. He moved to what is now CLAIBORNE County, Tennessee with his family when he was about six years old. At the age of 21 he entered the political scene, under the influence of father, who was involved with community leadership throughout his life also. Isaac started his career as a deputy sheriff in the county.

He was, evidently, reared to very patriotic and educated in a frontier school house. His entire life was devoted to the study and judgment of law. He married first to Mary MARTIN, daughter of Salathiel MARTIN and Mary COOK, about 1816. Isaac and Mary had seven children and then Mary (Polly) died sometime around the mid 1830's. Isaac then married Sarah Parker HAMILTON, daughter of James HAMILTON, Sr., and Betsy WEAR, in 1839.

Isaac and Sally had one child. Isaac lived most his life on the farm his father once owned in Powell Valley. About the time of his retirement, he moved to Southern part of Claiborne County to the Lone Mountain District near two of his daughters and lived the remainder of his life there. He and his wife, Sally, both died in 1866. He is believed to be buried nearby his home in Lone Mountain on the farm owned by his son-in-law, Ewing B. YOAKUM, and daughter, Martha Elizabeth VAN BEBBER/YOAKUM. The study of his life could be written into a novel.

YUKON

By Alice Bell ([email protected])

I am reading a book titled "YUKON" by Pat and Baiba Morrow published by Firefly Books: pg. 73 reads, and I quote, " Artist Lucy Sanderson, a daughter of the pioneer VanBibber family, paints a mural in her family home honoring the Pelly River Indian Band. In 1898, Ira VanBibber came to the Klondike from West Virginia with his two brothers and fell in love with the country. He married a native woman named Eliza, settled in the Pelly Crossing area and became one of the best big-game guides in the
Yukon. His family, which included 14 children, lived off the land, fishing and trapping in the wildlife rich mountain range nearby, now the McArthur Wildlife Sanctuary."

One never knows when one might stumble across a genealogical reference. Hope this helps someone. It also serves as a reminder that when we just can NOT find a person who was known to be in Place A (West Virginia) and can no longer be found, alive or dead in any of the records of that area, then we might begin to wonder if that the person
has chosen to move elsewhere - Place B - which could be anywhere from Texas to California to Canada or ???

SUCCESS STORY

By Gerry Peterson (Error! Bookmark not defined.), Myron Bounds (Error! Bookmark not defined., and Stephen Van Bibber ([email protected])

I am looking for information on the genealogy of Peter Van Bibber and Marguery Bounds, their birth places, etc. I am also looking for names and birth dates of their offspring and their religious affiliation. Can anyone out there help me??
Thanks,

Gerry Peterson
-----

Hi Gerry,

I am Myron Bounds and have some information you may be interested in. The first documented Bounds in America was Marjory's great grandfather, John Bounds (who probably left London aboard the good ship HOPEWELL bound for the Barbadoes in 1634 a age 20) who with his wife Mary Hiam left Virginia for Maryland c1672. John & Mary were members of the Church of England and indeed he was a vestryman and was one of those selected to lay out the boundaries of the Stepney Parish (from whose records much of this information is extracted)

John & Mary had four children: Ann Bounds Windsor b in VA before1670: William Bounds b in VA before 1672, John Bounds (Jr) b c 1672 MD, James Bounds b 1675 in MD.

Marjory's Grandfather was John Bounds Jr who married a Rebecca(??). He was born c 1672 in Somerset County MD along the Nanticoke River at his parents plantation. John was a planter and resided with Rebecca on land across the Nanticoke River in Dorchester County MD.

John(Jr) and Rebecca had four children born in Dorchester County: James Bounds b 1696, John Bounds b c1701, George Bounds b c 1708, Sarah Bounds.

Marjory's Father was James Bounds b c1696 d c1775. James married Ann Dicks (Dykes??) by 1721 and after disposing of the Maryland lands they left the Eastern shore of Maryland and moved west to the Shendoah Valley of Virginia. By 1744 he was in Frederick County VA where he was closely associated with his brother, George Bounds and his wife Mary Claywell. In 1754 James Bounds was Constable of Bedford County VA., where his daughter Jane married John Cole. c1761 he was in Anson County North Carolina where he swapped land with his sons James Jr, Jesse, and John Bounds (I think
this is the earliest one that spelled his/her name as Bounds), his son-in-law John Cole and Stephen Cole and their uncle, Mark Cole. James (Sr) died by 1775 and was buried on his own plantation in Anson County NC.

James & Ann six children: John Bounds b 1730-1740, James Bounds (Jr) b 1720, Jesse Bounds b 1730-1735, Marjory Bounds (Mager ,Major, Marguery) b 1740, Jane Bounds b 10 Oct 1738, Nellie Bounds (Elener Bounds).

Marjory (Mager, Major, Marguery) was born in 1740 in Maryland. She married in 1756, Peter VanBebber Jr son of Peter and Ann VanBebber (this spelling from my source)
of Baltimore, Cecil County, Maryland. They lived in the Blackwater-Pigg River area
variously under Lunenberg, Halifax, Pittsylvania and Bedford Counties of Virginia until 1770 when they went across the Blue Ridge to the mouth of the Greenbrier River, then in Botetourt County.

Peter and his brothers Isaac VanBebber and John VanBebber and some of their sons were in the Battle of Pleasant Point, "a battle of the Revolution".

Peter VanBebber, born 1728 died 10 October 1796 and Marjory and Olive, her youngest daughter, born 1783 lived with her son, Peter VanBebber (III) until after Olive's marriage to Nathan Boone in 1799. Marjory is said to have lived with one of her sons in Kentucky about 1817, but she spent her last years at the home of Olive Boone and Nathan Boone as did Daniel Boone and his wife. The widowed Hannah Allison Cole took her children, Nellie (Elener) Bounds' grandchildren, there for shelter during Indian troubles. Marjory was in good health in 1834 in St. Charles County Missouri and is said to have died at Nathan Boone's in Greene County Missouri in 1844 at the age of 104.

I suspect that Marjory's actual name was spelled as Majer or perhaps Major. There were several girl relatives named after her. For example: her niece, John VanBebber's daughters' name was Majer VanBebber and she married Andrew Donnelley Jr. Her son Matthias named a daughter Majer and she married a Noah Davis. Major/Majer is a rare name for women but is also found in other family groups in early Dorchester and Somerset County Maryland.

Peter and Marjory had ten children: Peter VanBebber b 5 Aug 1757, Halifax County VA died 8 Oct 1838 in Ripley County Indiana, married Sarah Yoakum 22 July 1875, John Jesse VanBebber b 8 Aug 1759, Halifax Co. VA, Died 10 Apr 1852, Mason County West Virginia. Married Rachel Greenlee 09 July 1799 in Mason County W VA, Sophronia VanBebber (Verona) b 1764 Halifax County VA died 27 Mar 1824 in Gallia County Ohio. Married George Dixon 20 Oct 1872 in Greenbrier County VA., then went to Warren County Ohio, James VanBebber b 8 May 1766 Halifax Co. VA. died Calloway Co. Missouri, Married Jean Irvine 13 Apr 1796 in Kanawha County VA, Ellinor VanBebber married Peter VanBebber (her 1st Cousin) on 29 Jun 1781 in Greenbrier County VA . Later went to Claiborne County TN, Nancy VanBebber (maybe Gary Hawpe has information on Nancy) Matthias VanBebber (Tice) b 24 Nov 1774 Greenbrier County VA, Died 09 Mar
1829 in Nicholas County VA. He married, first, Margaret Robinson Gardner 15 Apr 1797 in Kanawha County VA. Second, he married Margaret Hutchinson. Jacob VanBebber b 1775 Greenbrier County VA died 1839 Greenup County KY, married Sarah Miller in 1795 in Kanawha County VA, Joseph VanBebber b 1776 Greenbrier County VA Died September 1796, Point Pleasant, Mason County VA.(I assume in the Battle), Olive VanBebber b 13 Jan 1783 Kanawha County VA. died 12 Nov 1858 in Ash Grove, Green County, Missouri. Married 26 Sept 1799, Major Nathan Boone who was born 02 Mar 1781, Fayette County KY, son of Daniel Boone. Nathan Boone was commissioned in the
war of 1812. Nathan & Olive had 14 children: James, Delinda, Jemima, Susan, Nancy, Olive, Benjamin Howard, John Coburn, Levica, Melcina, Mary, Sarah, Mahala, & Mela.

Well, Gerry I think I have exhausted what I have on the Van Bibbers although I have lots of Bounds information although I'm not sure that any of it would help you a lot.
For example, I have information on the other children of Marjory's ancestors who are
not in the direct line which I cited above.

If I haven't answered your needs then please contact me & I'll see what else I might dig up.

PETER VAN BIBBER III ESTATE RECORDS OF VANDERBURG CO., IN

By Virginia Aldridge ( [email protected])and Stephen Van Bibber ([email protected])

Hi All,

This is about Peter Van Bibber III-Estate Records of Vanderburgh Co., IN

" Now here coms Jacob Vanbibber and proves to the satisfaction fo the Court that Peter Vanbibber late of the County of Vanderburgh deceased died on the eighth day of Oct AD 1838 intestate that he left no widow that no administrator of his estate has been granted to anyone and that said Jacob Vanbibber is a son and only heir of the said Peter Vanbibber deceased and that he is over twenty one years of age."

I have looked at this record.
Virginia Aldridge
-----

In addition to the estate record quoted by Virginia Aldridge, two other documents indicate that Peter Van Bibber died in Vanderburgh County. These can be found with Peter's application for Revolutionary War veteran's pension, I believe. Both are legal documents certified by Vanderburg County justices of the peace and used by Peter's son Jacob to claim the last pension payment. I only have 30-year old typed, transcribed copies of these documents and think they need to be checked again. Nevertheless, I think it safe to rely on what the estate record tells us.

As to where Peter was buried, I have to admit I was relying on the DAR's judgment. They put his name on the memorial to Revolutionary War veterans buried in Vanderburgh County, but of course, Ripley County has claimed him on a similar monument (or so I've heard). Most likely, no one knows where he lies.

WILL OF EZEKIEL VAN BIBBER

By Darrell Smith ([email protected])

I have been reviewing the Will of Ezekiel Van Bibber and I have noted quite a few interesting items!

I believe that we have the date of death for Susan Rice Van Bibber incorrect. We currently have that date listed as 01 Sep 1856 from Vital Records.

My explanations are below:
1. An inventory was filed of Ezekiel's estate on 05 May 1859 (nearly three years after Susan's supposed death)
2. An administrative settlement filed on 16 Aug 1861 states that:
"widow of decedent now wife of Keaton claims nothing from said estate as shown by said agreement that she and decedent separated by mutual consent and that she received a portion of his estate or property and that she has no further claims against estate."
Apparently, old Zek and Susan "divorced" or "separated" and she remarried to a Keaton.
3. The final settlement mentions all of Ezekiel's children as we have them recorded in chronological order :-) It also makes note that Susan (the daughter) is not yet "of age".
4. At this time I'm inclined to believe that the death record for Susan Van Bibber is for the daughter of Ezekiel and not Susan Rice. The cause of death listed in the vitals was "Childbed Fever". The cause would not only be fitting for a mother, but also for a child. I think we should check records now for a marriage of Susan Van Bibber to a Keaton and change the DOB for Susan to ca. 1853 and DOD to 01 Sep 1856 (about three years old).
5. Also, in the same Admin Settlement it mentions that Susan "now widow" of decedent (dated 16 Aug 1861) and filed (7 Oct 1861) ... Ezekiel currently has a date of death of Bef. Dec 1867. However, that date is the date when the Final Settlement was finally recorded at the courthouse.

So Zek's DOD should be Bef. 16 Aug 1861 since Susan mentions herself as "widow" during the sworn statement recorded on 16 Aug 1861 and filed later on 07 Oct 1861.

QUERIES

From Ronnie Van Bebber ([email protected])

Bruce,

I have a question, In today's paper an article about the Oklahoma City bombing, they mentioned a judge G. Thomas Van Bebber, does anyone know his pedigree?

Thanks Ronnie Van Bebber

From Carolyn Switzer ([email protected])

Hi All!

Need some help locating the parents of Esther (Hester) Van Bibber who married James Rentfroe, Sr. She was probably born about 1700 in VA. She married James, son of William and Jane Rentfroe in Old Orange County, VA in 1719. I am related to their daughter May Rentfroe (b. 1736) who married James Cole, Jr. in 1754. They later migrated to Southwest Mississippi Territory in the late 1770's.

Can anyone help me with Esther or Hester Van Bibber???

Thanks.

Hi,

I just ran across your newsletter page for the first time, and was glad to see Olive Boone Van Bibber and Robert Keenan on it. My husband is a descendant of theirs. I do not have any background information on Olive at all. Can you connect me with someone who would share what they have about her? Also, who is the William Wesley Keenan that Olive and Robert's daughter, Elizabeth Ann married? And of course, I am curious as to who George Henry Keenan and William Henry Harrison Keenan are as well.

Thank you in advance for ANY information.

Does anyone have information on the wife and children of Peter VAN BIBBER, III? He married Sarah YOAKUM, sister of George YOAKUM, I. George married Martha "Patty" VAN BEBBER, who was a first cousin of Peter. George and Sarah were children of Valentine "Felty" YOAKUM and ???Margaret SEA//ZEH???

Anyone having information on these families, I would appreciate information from you. Is there a marker for the grave of Peter VAN BIBBER, III? or Sarah, his wife??

Thank You

Steve Smith

My daughter recently gave me your newsletter outlining the descendants of John H. VanBibber. It was of special interest to me because he was my great grandfather. I have many family papers & letters dating back to the early 1800's. I am aware of his activities after he showed up in Washington Territory, but essentially nothing before that time. I would be very interested in any information that you might have as to his ancestors. Thank you.

I would like to subscribe to your newsletter, I don't connect directly to the VanBibbers but a sister of one of my ancestors married one and I would like what information I can get on their children. All I have for them is a marriage date. EVALINE RAISON to JAMES T. VAN BIBBER at Cannonsburg, KY, June 21, 1853, he was 29 and she was 21. This marriage was published in Portsmouth, Ohio paper. That's it!

Mr. Logan. I am descended from Martha Jane(VanBibber)Mayfield.(NOTE: I do have a copy of her marriage license.) I am having a dickens of a time locating information about her ancestors. Her father was Jacob Van Bibber(he served in the confederate army, but I believe he was dead by 1863.) Her mother was(I believe) Sarah (Sally) Stone, of Comanche Co, TX. I have read your VanBibber electronic newsletter (Nov.97) and there are a couple names in here I have seen before(I will need to go back & review my notes) mainly Margery Bounds. Another problem in my research on this family is that Martha Jane was orphaned before she was age five. I have not found any connection to the VanBebbers of Montague Co, TX. I consider myself a novice in genealogy research & Internet usage as well. Any leads will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

Hello, I'm new to the list.

I'm researching my paternal grandfather Fred HARRISON's family. His parents were Arthur and Jane Anne(ARMITAGE) HARRISON who emigrated from Yorkshire, England around 1885. They settled first in Scranton, KS (not PA), then Richmond, MO and St. Joseph, MO. Among Fred's siblings who were born in the states, was a sister
named Mary HARRISON (b. Sept. 20, 1886-Scranton, KS) who later married someone with the surname VANBEBBER. They settled in Richmond, MO. If anyone can provide further information regarding this VANBEBBER connection, please contact me.

I am seeking information on the following Van Bebber: Nimrod C. Van Bebber who married Adeline Borden on July 1, 1867 in Ray County Missouri. I would like to know who his ancestors were and how he was related to the many other Van Bebbers mentioned in the newsletter each month.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

From Earl K. Harvey ([email protected])

Hello all,

I am new to the group, so if some of my inquiries are a repetition of past Q&A's I apologize. My interest is that of my wife being a descendent as follows:

Jacob I; Isaac J; Peter VB of 1695; Isaac VB=Sarah Davis; John VB=Margaret C(h)risman; James VB= Eliz. Yoakum; Peter VB=Esmeralda Maybee; Frederick E VB=Effie Penry; Winfred VB=Margaret Emerson.

Q 1. Buried in Ipswich MA are the wives of one Capt. Isaac Van Bebber. They are Elizabeth Trescot(t) 1734 and Elizabeth Harris 1738. Could these be the wives of one Isaac Van Bebber b 15Jul1701, Cecil Co. MD? son of Peter VB=Anna Henriette ___. (from list of David Stivison, 1993)

Q2. Several articles refer to the Isaac VB of the Battle of Pt. Pleasant fame as either or both "Capt." or "Rev." also some have given this Isaac a middle name of Michael or initial "M". Can anyone explain or source any or all of these?

Q3. The above Peter VB(=Esmeralda Maybee) from Ray Co. MO had a twin brother James VB who, according to legend or lore "ran away from home". Has anyone traced or come across this fellow?

Thanks for considering these questions, and I am happy to swap information on any VB's from California ( dates on those who have assumed room temperature) or
Missouri that I have on file.

Earl K. Harvey, who's wife is Laura Mae Van Bebber Harvey!

Seeking any information on Matilda VanBibber Estill who was married to James Estill and lived in Tennessee. Later, Matilda moved to Lawrence County Missouri and my Great Great Grandfather lived with her and her family. His name was Benjamin Timberlake. Matilda was his Aunt. I am trying to find out where in Tennessee they lived and apparently that was where James Estill died.

I think that Benjamin Timberlake was born in Tennessee in 1830 and his parents were Rachel Estill and Richard Timberlake.

If you have any information on my people, I would be glad to pay for copies or whatever I need to do to obtain this information.

Thanks so much.

Peggy Powell has kindly sent me the latest newsletter for which I would like to congratulate you. It makes interesting reading and certainly gives an insight as to what was life was like for the early pioneers.

The reason for my message is that I am researching the Vibert family and surname, of which a major variation in the USA and Canada is Vibber or Bibber.

Do you know the general origins of the Van Bibbers, and which they originally came from ? I was wondering if there may be any links between the families bearing in mind the similarity of surnames.

Thanks and regards

Hi again.

I am back into the KEENAN side of my family and realized that I don't have the parents of Olive Boone VanBibber b. 1806 Nicholas Co. I have her marrying Robert KEENAN Feb. 02, 1824, is this correct? I am the 3rd great-granddaughter to her.

I also tried to register for the newsletter a couple months ago but from my end didn't go through to you. If you could sign me up for your web site I would appreciate it.... I really do have an interest in it but get off track sometimes with all of the branches on mine and my husband's tree... I seem to have lost contact with Gary Hawpe once he got back from his break to Utah.

Later...Cuzin' Judy

I believe I am a cousin to about everyone since I belong to the prolific JOHNSONS of VA and PAYNES of NC also. Ha Ha

Thanks to Anna Lutz, Bruce, Steve, Gary and others for recent great and interesting family information. Also thanks to Bruce for the March newsletter, and Gary for the Day in VB history features.

Just trying to stir up some more family stories from you experts, with a few
questions.

Did I imagine it, or does the VanBibber line include some Dixons? And if so, did our great Texas frontier hero Billy Dixon descend from them? He was born in Ohio and orphaned, then went to Ray County, Missouri to live with an uncle, William Dixon, but soon went West a-wandering and ended up being awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor. If I only dreamed it that the VB line includes Dixons, excuse me please.

Next question: Little Jacob VB, who was captured by Indians and forced to "run
the gauntlet" but charmed his way into his captors' hearts by butting down an Indian boy. Is that the same Jacob from whom I and mine descend--the one who married Catherine Guthrie? And pardon my ignorance, but what is "running the gauntlet"? I am mentally picturing this lad dodging a long line of spears, or something equally disagreeable.

What is known of the Guthries? Down the road a ways from my home is the village of Guthrie, Texas. Is that VanBibber land? It's kind of pretty down there,
with what we call breaks. If you don't know breaks, think of bluffs, or long
skinny canyons, with red rocks and some little juniper trees, with a river bed
winding through. (No water, of course, but look at the bright side--no water in
the river, no quicksand or water moccasins.)

Then I have a question about our Yoakums. Isn't the singer Dwight Yoakum from
Kentucky, and is he one of us?

I notice in Sullivan-Linn County MO cemetery listings that some Yoakum family
members are buried there. Perhaps this information is useful to those of you of Yoakum descent.

And I for one would like to hear some more VB stories from Anna Lutz. Perhaps
she can paint some word pictures for us about life in the VB frontier cabins--or give us an insight into what our ancestors were like.
