Van Bibber Pioneers Electronic Newsletter
Volume 2, Number 8 · June 1998
Greetings:
I hope you enjoyed the special edition of the Van Bibber Pioneers newsletter featuring Gary Hawpes THIS DAY IN VAN BIBBER HISTORY that I recently e-mailed to all of the subscribers. I will continue to send them out at irregular intervals until I have included all of the e-mails that Gary sent to the Van Bibber L discussion list. For those of you who have not subscribed to the list you may do so by sending an e-mail to [email protected] with nothing in the Subject line and only the word "subscribe", without the quotation marks, in the body of the e-mail.
I am about to get caught up on the newsletters and hope to do that early next month. However, I still need your assistance. If your belated query or article did not make it to me for this issue of the newsletter send it to me quickly and I will put it in the next issue.
It has been a hot summer and promises to be even hotter. Just like the summer heat the, Van Bibber Pioneers continues to be a hot item. We now have two hundred and ten subscribers.

HENSLEY RESEARCH
By Martha Everman Jones ([email protected])
George Washington EVERMAN (1878-1947) married Carrie Olive HENSLEY, 30 August 1902 in Grayson (Carter) Kentucky. They owned a grocery store near Grayson but sold it in 1918 and moved to Alabama, then to Kirbyville (Jasper) Texas where George was a salesman for Lion Oil Company. Both are buried in Kirbyville Cemetery, Kirbyville, Texas.
Their children were Harold Hensley (my father), Bernice and Gladys. A son named Major died very young.
Documentation: Marriage License; 1910 Census, Carter Co. KY, 1920 Census Randolph Co., Alabama; land deed; photos, death certificates, gravestone photos.
Carrie was the daughter of Solomon HENSLEY (b.1849 Greenup KY-?) and
Cosby Jane TILLER (Tyler, Tiler) (b.1843 VA -?) Solomon was a Primitive Baptist Minister. Marriage record ? Their children were Carrie (my grandmother) Fred, Minnie, Frank, Wade, and Mason.
Documentation: 1900 Census, Carter Co. KY, page 28, #; oral conversation with my aunt, Gladys EVERMAN DAVIS, August, 1974; personal letters from Gladys EVERMAN DAVIS dated 1975-1977.
Solomon HENSLEY was the son of George HENSLEY (b. 1824 Greenup Co. KY) and Sarah LIGHTNER (b. 1831 Ohio or Pennsylvania?). They were married 12
August 1845. Their children were Matthias b. 1847 and Solomon b. 1848, both born in Greenup Co. KY.
Documentation: Marriage record, Greenup Co. KY; 1850 Census Greenup Co.
KY#801, page 213; History of Greenup County, Kentucky by Biggs and Mackoy, 1951, pp. 282-284.
George HENSLEY was the son of George HENSLEY (b. 1788 -?) and Ruth VAN
BIBBER b. 1800-?) who married 20 May 1815 in Greenup Co. KY
Documentation: Marriage record; 1850 Census Greenup Co. KY, #801, page
213; History of Greenup County, Kentucky by Biggs and Mackoy, 1951, pp. 282-284.
***********************************************************************Needing additional research:
1. Documented father and mother of George HENSLEY (b. 1788-?) and additional ancestors.
2. "Kentucky Soldiers of the War of 1812" comp. by Wilder, 1969, lists George Hensley, Private, September 10, 1814 to October 9, 1914 in Capt. George Bishop's Company, KY Volunteer Militia, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Porter. However, the National Archives has no military record for this service. Where did Wilder get her records?

A MARSHALL VAN BIBBER STORY

Marshall Baker Van Bibber and Harriet Agnes (Hattie) Ghent
Here's a story that surfaced years after it happened. Mother hadn't known about it until she was in her late 50's when she was staying with her sister Goldie for a week. It was months before she could relate it without laughing too hard to finish this story:
When the young Marshall Van Bibber family was still in Colorado, my grandfather found a beautiful porcelain set that included a pitcher, basin and chamber pot with a lovely hunting scene painted in a harmonizing border. It was a perfect gift for my grandmother's coming birthday. He paid for it, but left it at the store until the actual date.
Meanwhile the storekeeper's wife saw the set and was determined to have the
chamber pot for her own. No amount of talk could convince her that it was already sold. With profound apologies he explained the situation when Marshall came for his wife's gift. The set had come from England and a replacement could not possibly be ordered in time.
Sometime later, Marshall was out hunting on a hill behind the town and saw the
beautiful chamber pot out airing on the storekeeper's back porch. Now, Marshall Van Bibber was a very mild tempered man who was not given to vindictive actions, but seeing that very special piece of porcelain there made his blood boil. He never missed a target and he didn't miss that one.
The lady just couldn't understand what had happened to her shattered chamber
pot, and the storekeeper had the strangest story to tell Marshall the next time he came in.

ST. STEPHENS CHURCH
By Alice Cates (Non-subscriber)
I visited St. Stephens last year, too. The present church building was built in the 1800's and is the third on the site. The first was built in 1692-3. (A still earlier one may have been located near the Sassafras River from the 1680's.)There appears to be a building site about 70 yards from the present church. The church is surrounded by the cemetery and there are many old stones but also many unmarked graves and no good sexton's records.
******
The first priest of this parish was Lawrence Vanderbush, a French Huguenot originally named Laurent Vandenbosch. In 1685 King Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes by which the French Calvinists had formerly enjoyed freedom of worship. The end of toleration in France led Vanderbush and other Huguenots to go to England where he took holy orders. He then came to Boston, and after a few years, moved to Staten Island. Coming to parishes in Cecil County, and also of St. Paul's Parish Kent Count. He died in 1696 and was succeeded by Richard Sewell, a graduate of Christ's College, Cambridge. After ordination in London in 1693, Sewell came to Maryland in 1697 and was made rector of North and South Sassafras parishes. BATTLE OF FALLEN TIMBERS
By Anna L. Lutz ([email protected])
The 1794, battlefield site of 185 acres, has been identified. The Battle Of Fallen Timbers, that opened settlements in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois. It made a safe frontier for the settlers, in settlements on the Ohio River, in Western Virginia, now West Virginia.
Its location is northwest of the intersection of I-475, and the Anthony Wayne Trail in Maumee Township. The 434 acres, in Maumee, includes the southern third of land, that was the site of the 185 acre battlefield, where General "Mad" Anthony Wayne, was credited with a major victory, in post-American Revolution History. It was here, on August 24 1794, that United States Troops, led by Wayne, defeated a group of Indians. Among those, who fought in this battle were, Mattias, Jacob, and Isaac Van Bibber, Jr., of the Virginia troops.
The preservation of this battlefield site must be decided by Historians, and the cities of Toledo and Maumee. It was suggested, that the 185 acre site be turned into a National Historic Site, and a monument placed in a 15 acre part of the site.

QUERIES
From Martha Everman Jones ([email protected])
I am interested in corresponding with researchers working on the Ruth Van Bibber (b. 1800) line. She married George W. Hensley (b. 1788) on 20 May 1815 in Greenup County, KY. I am working on both the HENSLEY and VAN BIBBER lines.

From Tom Williams ([email protected])
I'm looking for the Van Bibber who fathered my great great grandfather.
The story line is like this: Silas Williams, Sr., born in abt.1761 was one of the founding father of Tazewell, Tennessee. I believe he was a judge during that time. He
also friends with (I think) John Van Bibber, who was also one of the founding father of Tazewell. Silas had a daughter named Nancy who had a son (out of wedlock) from one of the Van Bibbers. I want to know who that Van Bibber was. Their son was named Silas Williams, after Nancy's father. That Silas Williams was my gggrandfather. So, in other words, if Silas was the descendants of the Van Bibber, then our name is actually Van Bibber, not Williams. I did some research last year on the Williams family tree and I came across a document from the Tennessee Library (in fact the historian sent it to us) stating that Nancy Williams had a son out of wedlock from the Van Bibber. She also married a fellow by the name of Ridenour. So, in the document my gggrandfather had two names: Silas Williams/Van Bibber. If you have any information regarding this please share with me. Thank you.

MYSTERY: Re: Samuel Hensley, father-in-law of Ruth Van Bibber, who married George W. Hensley. Who did Samuel Hensley (b. 1751 in Albemarle, VA, d. 01 January 1831 in Pendleton, VA.) marry? Was it (1) Libby Shoemaker (2) Mary Leak or Ruth Sibba, or all three?
Thanks, Martha

I am still seeking info on the marriage between Rachel Estill and Richard Timberlake.
At least one son, Benjamin was born in TN in 1830.

From Earl Taylor ([email protected])
My wife's grandfather was William Lee Van Bibber, must have been born around 1900, maybe a little sooner. If I go get his death certificate at the cemetery in Pasadena I can find out. His wife was Sarah Lee Currens "Sadie". My wife's father was Harold, the
next to youngest of 14 children, 12 boys and two girls. He died of tuberculosis about 1927 at the age of 22. The family lived around Kansas City, Mo. in 1925. My wife was born in Rockville, Mo. in 1925.
Immediately afterwards they moved to southern Calif. Most of the older children either lived or died in Mo. I know of four who moved to So Cal. William, Bert, Harold, and Russell the baby. The two girls Margaret and Esther married Sutton brothers and moved to So Cal. My wife's sister Dorothy May was born in Pasadena, CA in 1927. The oldest son I know, William came to so Cal and left a bunch of kids by two different wives.
Bert had only one daughter and Russell had none.
At this time I have no documentation or dates or places. My wife has one cousin who grew up in William and Sadie's house as she was orphaned at an early age.

I came across your newsletter while researching a gr gr grandparent through the Family Treemaker site. Your newsletter listed a Catherine Emery who married Simon Shumaker, son of George and Mary Shumaker. My grandparent was also Catherine Emery who married George Bartholomew.
George's father was John Henry Bartholomew who had two wives, Catherine
Wideman and Mrs. Elizabeth Peck. Between them, he had 14 children. One was a son name Henry Emery Bartholomew. Then you post a list of Shumakers with a John Henry Bartholomew Shumaker who married an Ann Barbara. This seems quite a coincidence and I am wondering if you can shed any further light on this.
Thanks for your help.

I am looking for any information on the children of the Van Bibber/Liford marriages in Claiborne County, TN. My grandmother was Loetta Liford (she went by Loretta) and she married Joe Rosenbalm in Claiborne County, TN in 1926. I can not locate anything on her family. If you have any information it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
