Greetings:

It has been a long hot summer, but a busy and productive one for the Van Bibber researchers as you can see below.

Some of you may wonder why I am including queries from the Van Bibber-L e-mail list. The answer is simple. There are many subscribers to the newsletter that have chosen not to subscribe to the e-mail discussion list and I want them to be able to see and hopefully answer queries to list.

I am about to catch up on the newsletters and will do so this month if you will assist me. I need more articles and queries just as soon as you can make time for them. I want to get the August issue out by the end of the month and can do it with your help. Let us continue to make the Van Bibber Pioneers a success.

Dear Bruce,

I have really been enjoying your newsletters. I have only received four months worth and have learned more about the Van Bibber Family than I ever imagined I would able to find. I was very interested to see Catherine Ridenour in this family line as we have some Ridenours in our Zirkle family line also that comes from the same area... No telling how many times our family tree vines together. Thanks!

I don't know if you will find this interesting but I will give you our branch of the family. I know I have it right back through Olive Van Bibber but you may have to correct her ancestors - I think they are correct.

Also, I have most of the details - birth dated, death, marriages, stories etc. of the descendants of Olive - if anyone wants that information I would be happy to send that to them.

THE PRICE THEY PAID

Have you ever wondered what happened to those men who signed the Declaration of Independence? Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons in the Revolutionary Army, another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or the hardships of the Revolutionary War.

What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners, men of means, well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags. Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward. Vandals or soldiers or both looted the properties of Ellery, Clymer, Hall, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge and Middleton.

At the Battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis, had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. The owner quietly urged General George Washington to open fire, which was done. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt. Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their thirteen children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home after the war to find his wife dead, his children vanished.
A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart. Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates.

Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. They were not wild-eyed rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged: "For the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of the Divine Province, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor".

Hawpe and have learned a lot about my VanBebber/VanBibber lineage. I have given him some information on my family starting with John Liford on down to my grandmother, Fern May Liford (1894 - 1944). I was informed by Mr. Hawpe, that I am descended from TWO different branches of the VanBebber/VanBibber family tree. You

It is my will that my daughter Elizabeth have my young chestnut sorrell mare and one cow. It is also my will that my Grandson James Moss VAN BEBBER have my roan mare and one white cow.
I give to my Grandson John OWENS my red cow, known by the name of Frosty. It is my will that my said executors shall pay my just debts out of the balance of my personal property and pay son Isaac VAN BEBBER twenty five cents and my son-in-law James OWENS twenty five cents. My daughter Hannah twenty five cents, and that my said wife Hannah have the balance of my personal property of every kind and description and at the death of my said wife, Hannah, that my estate shall be equally divided between my daughters Polly SHARP, Peggy ROSS, Sarah WHEALER, Patsy VANBEBBER, Robert VAN BEBBER, Elizabeth VANB EBBER, and my Grandson James Moss VAN BEBBER.

In conformatin of this my last will, I hereby revoke all former wills of every description.

NOTE BY THIS RESEARCHER: The events set into place by this will and the fact that Isaac VAN BEBBER, Jr., son of James VAN BEBBER, Sr., contested the Will, brought about a long and complicated court trial that eventually ended up in Tennessee State Supreme Court. Needless to say, this researcher was very happy with the amount of family history that was brought about in this trial.

In the following book: Dillinghams of Big Ivy, Buncombe County, N.C. and Related Families by Margaret Wallis Haile, 1979.

I will quote you a couple of paragraphs from page # 11:

"On 20 May 1762, Vachel Dillingham received a grant of six hundred acres of land from the Commonwealth of Virginia in the county of Halifax.

Vachel Dillingham was probably married by that time. His first wife was named Ann, but her surname is unknown. He had at least one child, a daughter, Patience, born about 1760, by his first wife, and possible two of his sons, but Ann was deceased prior to 1765 when Vachel married Hester Rentfro, daughter of James and Esther (Van Bibber) Rentfro. In July 1765, James Rentfro conveyed one hundred acres in Halifax County, Virginia, to Vachel Dillingham, and it is assumed that this was Hester's dower."

September 22, 1914, in Lone Mountain and passed away August 3, 1998, at Hudson
Valley Hospital in Peekskill, N.Y. She was a member of the Lone Mountain Baptist Church. Preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Bargo; parents, Charlie and Byrdie McBee Campbell; brothers, J.C. and Fred Campbell; sister, Kate Breeding Riley. She is survived by daughter and husband, Jean and Bob Dent of Killeen, Texas; son and wife, Thomas and Kathy Bargo of Pleasant Valley, N.Y.; brothers, Archie Campbell of Victorville, Calif., John and wife, June Campbell of Acton, Calif.; sister and husband, Mary Lou and John T. Germantown congregation receives building grant from Mennonite Men.by George Hatzfeld

Philadelphia (GCMC)--The oldest continuously meeting Mennonite congregation in

North America has become the newest recipient of a building grant from Tenth Man, the charitable arm of Mennonite Men, an auxiliary of the General Conference Mennonite Church in Newton, Kan. David Linscheid, GC communications director, presented a check for $25,000 to the congregation at its worship service on Sunday, July 12. The grant will be used to continue refurbishment of the building at 21 West Washington Lane,

Germantown's place of worship since 1994.

The Mennonite church in North America traces its origins to a small group of German immigrants who heeded William Penn's call for craftsmen and mill operators to join him in Philadelphia in 1687. They began worshipping in a log building in Germantown by 1696. A Mennonite congregation has met regularly in this community ever since.

In accepting the grant, Germantown congregation chair Susan Moyer said, "We are

very grateful for the sense of purpose this award conveys to us as a congregation, for helping us continue Christ's work in Germantown."

Tenth Man grants are awarded to congregations working to build or make capital improvements to their houses of worship. Linscheid told the Germantown congregation that its effort to remain in the community, close to the historic roots of the Mennonite movement, was an important reason for this Tenth Man grant. He noted several urban issues that confront congregations like Germantown--housing revitalization, hunger, race, social justice, moral and ethical family concerns, and both cultural and sexual diversity--are easier to deal with if the church community has the security of its own building in place.

The grant represents the wider church's recognition that the Germantown congregation deserves support in addressing these issues, he said. The Washington Lane building stands less than two blocks from the historic 1770 meeting house--on the site of the original log church--where the descendants of the earliest Mennonites worshipped.

Until the late 1980s, the congregation met in the 1770 meeting house. For many years, there had been a period of decline. Then in the 1970s, energy began to flow back into the struggling congregation, bringing young Mennonite professionals and their growing families to Philadelphia and the Germantown church, and attracting members of non-Mennonite background who were inspired by the congregation's Christ-centered message and its peace and justice witness.

By 1987, the congregation had outgrown the 1770 meeting house. Over the next seven years, they met in two different temporary quarters as they worked to find a permanent church home. After evaluating a dozen sites and after bids on two distant buildings fell short, the congregation learned of the availability of the former home of the Germantown Women's Club, nearby at 21 West Washington Lane. Church leaders were able to purchase the building in March 1994 with a mortgage from Brotherly Aid Fire & Storm, a Mennonite insurance company in Lancaster, Pa.

The Germantown congregation used its available savings and a dedicated effort by its 100-plus members to raise the money needed to renovate the building's first floor community room for its initial worship area, install new rest rooms and a gas/hot-water furnace. Space for Christian education came next, and again, congregational challenge funds were matched to create three partitioned rooms for Sunday school classes. In 1997, the church offices were renovated, and handicapped access ramps to the worship area were installed. Current projects include making the kitchen capable of supporting the work of the church and community events.

Mennonite workers from suburban Philadelphia and beyond volunteered their labor in assisting early renovation efforts, including help from the Mennonite Disaster Service. The building had suffered some interior water damage over the years, and from its role as a showroom for fireplace fixtures.

On the building's second floor, the original auditorium built for the Germantown Women's Club will seat 300. Surviving members of the Women's Club confirm that

Grace Kelly performed on the stage during her debutante year in Philadelphia. Tenth Man grant proceeds are expected to play an important role in the auditorium's makeover into a worship space.

The congregation has provided a part of its building to Germantown Women's Educational Project, an organization whose mission is to help young mothers complete the education they need to re-enter the workforce. It is evaluating other community needs and partners such as child and adult day-care organizations as potential weekday tenants of a fully renovated building, ready to serve both the mission of the congregation and community interests.

The congregation is a founding member of Urban Resources Development Corporation, a consortium of congregations in the Germantown section, which buys derelict homes, then renovates and re-sells them. It partners with a nearby Catholic church to provide meals to homeless and jobless persons in the community, and it regularly demonstrates its stands on peace and justice issues throughout the city.

Yesterday I was in Houston researching in the Clayton Public Library when I found a true gem, at least I think it is a gem. Perhaps you will want to share the information with the Van Bibber group.

I found a book, BOONE--THE OREGON TRACE by Philip C. Biddle, privately published, December 1981 and revised 1986, Library of Congress Cat. Card No. 82-112118 (Address: Gladys Boone Biddle, 1111 North 2000 West #345, Ogden, UT 84404.)

Now the good news--it has documentation! In the supplement, readers will find documented family group sheets along with "The Van Bibber History." It begins with a two-page narrative and is followed with 13 family group sheets and a picture of Isaac Van Bibber's Tavern at Mineola, MO.

In the Boone family portion, pp. 54-57, covers the Jesse Bryan Boone and Chloe Van Bibber line.

The body of Mrs. Cora Lucille King, age 28, who was killed in an automobile accident near Mansfield, Ohio, Saturday, was brought to the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Jesse VanBibber, at Laurel Run, Sunday.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Locke Church with burial at Clarks Chapel.

She is survived by her parents and the following brothers and sisters, James and Harold VanBibber of Haydenville, Ohio; Mrs. Zelma Appleman, Logan; and Charles, Clem and Ralph VanBibber at home.

General/Colonel George Armstrong Custer is of the same group of Custers. My line is from Arnold and Doors, and his is from Arnold & Nuzom(believed by most to be the second spouse of Arnold-there is some confusion on this by Custer researchers) My data prior to Virginia on the Custer line is from the book "Descendants of Paulus and
Gertrude Kustes:" edited by Jean White. ERRORS ARE MINE. Anyone working on
Custer should buy this book! I also acquired some data on GAC's family from researchers of his line, and from the GAC Museum in Monroe MI. During the Civil War in Shenandoah Co VA ,GAC fought against his southern Custer cousins.

There are many Martha Van Bibbers, but I have marriages for all of them. None married Swinfield Hill.

I also don't have a Rachael Van Bibber. Hope this has helped some.

Thought I would post this: On the 1900 census for Stoddard County Missouri, I
found several Van Bibber households. So, if you are wondering where in Missouri your branch of the tree landed, you may want to check them out. One family (in Bloomfield) was:
James H. born 1873 in Il (parents b. in TN) married 1898 (97?) to Bettie born 1876 in IL (parents b. KY and TN)
Children: Clarence born Nov 1890 born in IL

Just to add to the census information. In Ward 2 Bloomfield, Stoddard

My Rachel Vanbibber was born abt 1810 marr Samuel VB 23 Dec 1828 Ripley Co. IN. I do not have any real proof of this, but many puzzle pieces fit.

I misplaced the EMail on a Rachel ??? A. Jackson.

Andrew Jackson's wife was according to History Mrs Rachel Donelson Robards 15 June 1767- 22 Dec 1828. Her husband was a Capt Lewis Robards in Jackson's Army.

Andrew Jackson live in the Nashville boarding house of Mrs John Donelson, widow. He became attracted to her daughter. They married in Natchez Aug 1791, only to learn later she had not had a divorce until Sept. so they married again 17 Jan 1794 in Nashville.

The reason I am interested - I have a Web page with a small history of Andrew Jackson & if there is any proof of Rachel (his wife) being a VB I would like to know of it.

Hi,

We are Renfros searching Renfros, Rentfroes and etc. Do you have any idea when your Samuel was born and where? That would help us to locate him or people with him at that time.

Our ancestor is Samuel Houston Renfro b. 4 Feb. 1828 Roane Co., TN and came to Knox Co. , KY when he was about eight years old. He married there in 1848 to Elizabeth Hensen. No he did not name any of his children Samuel.

The Renfros, Van Bibbers and Coles seems to be related by marriage. James Cole, Sr. (s/o Stephen b. ca. 1661, and Elizabeth "Temple" Cole b. 1662) made his intention to marry Susannah Renrtroe in Chester Co., PA. in 1719 at the New Garden Monthly Meeting.(found at the Swathmore College in PA) We have no idea when they married, but know they did as she was on Land Records until 1752 in VA. The only other Renfro found in PA was a John Renfro and Elizabeth who could be Susannah's parents.
(Not confirmed) They had witnessed some legal papers together there at the meetings. We are not sure of the maiden for Stephen Cole 's wife Elizabeth, Temple, although a grandson was named William Temple Cole.

Just trying to find anything to fit together that makes what Phil Powers says work! He got his data from a cousin (evidentially not online, but I did not ask him specifically), who got it from another researcher. He is trying to get proof from these 2 people, and says he will let me know. Instead of just sitting and waiting, I thought I would check out what I can. Thought maybe some VB researcher would have on their data a Martha VB as a daughter without knowing she married Swinfield Hill. Then I could check the will for that VB with a Martha daughter, for Martha Hill.

Does any of this make sense?

Do you happen to have anything on the Thomas Cole family. He was born 1794 Va. He married Martha Wilkinson first and then married Rebecca Brittain. He is
buried in Marshall Co. Ky. They were from Virginia. I would like to know who his
parents were. I have looked everywhere and I have found nothing on his parents.

He and Martha were married Feb 25, 1825 in Chesterfield Co. Virginia, If you can help me in any way, I would appreciate it a lot.

Thanks for the VB data! Nothing showing a Martha as a daughter of James and
Anna, but the wide range in the birth dates of their children, doesn't rule her out.

Do you know the name Donelson in relation to VB? I thought I remembered seeing The name when I scanned so much VB data. Then ran across the signature of John Donelson on papers also signed by Swinfield Hill. Now I learn this John Donelson was the first spouse of Rachel ?, who later married (Pres.) Andrew Jackson. She found out that the divorce with Donelson was not kosher, AFTER marrying Jackson. Point: could Rachel have been Rachel VB? Have you come across the name Rachel VB?

In your listing in response to Barb Locker I did not have as a child of James VB and Anna Laroun one Mary Ann Van Bibber who married Enoch David. Is there any chance that this Mary Ann is one and the same person as the listed Ann Van Bibber b. 2 Jan1722/23, Cecil Co, Maryland?

I sent this message in a few weeks ago, but have not seen it posted so I'll try again...

I recently received some info. regarding the marriage of my great-aunt Mary HARRISON to Claude VAN BEBBER in Richmond, Ray Co. MO.

Included was an obit for Claude which has me somewhat confused. It states that Claude was survived by his daughter Ruby (Mrs. W. E. BARBER) from his first marriage to Grace PRYOR. Then listed his second wife, Mary HARRISON, a step-daughter, Mrs. J. R. Kays of Sullivan, MO, and two step-sons, David E. HARRISON of Jefferson City and Marshall E. HARRISON of Kansas City.

My great-aunt's maiden name was HARRISON, so either she never married and had three children which I find unlikely, or she married a HARRISON, or whoever gave the obit info was just wrong.

If anyone is familiar with this family, I would appreciate hearing from you.
