SCHUMACHER FAMILY

By Dick Shoemaker ([email protected]) (Non-subscriber)

see p. 75 of the book

The early European followers of Menno Simons banded together to escape religious persecution, and established colonies at strategic points in Central Europe, where the government was tolerant, and they were or less welcome. Peter and George were of these Mennonite families, and it is possible that their roots go back to a small Mennonite colony at Monschau, in the Rhine Province of Germany, just south of Aachen and a few miles easy of the Belgian frontier. (French -`Montjoie; and `Aix'). At Monschau in the year 1597, is found a Henrich Schumacher and his wife and Arndts (Arnold) Henrich and his wife, Dedenborn, (Aptenstucke Staats Archiv Dusseldorf, Julichsberg, 254).

When persecution began in this area, and these Mennonite families began to
lose their possession by confiscation, the colony appears to have moved to Dollendorf, near Lowenburg in the Siebengebirge hills on the east bank of the Rhine River, south of Cologne.

It is here at Dollendorf that is found the earliest definite knowledge of Peter and George Shoemaker. The Duke of Julich und Berg in 1652 gave notice that this religious sect must sell their possessions and vacate their land, and he gave them two years to do it. In the Staats Archiv Dusseldorf, Bergische Gerichte - Amt. Lowenberg - 4, and in the Dollendorfer Protocoll von Contracten, year 1655, there came before the rent controller, Agnes, widow of Arnold Schumacher, to state that she appoints Eithum, her son-in-law, as trustee for Peter and George, both of age, and guardian for her minor children:- Arnold, Treinchen (Caqtherine), and Adelgen (Adele).

This family had sold its possession at Niederdollendorf, including many meadows, vineyards, and lands in and around the Siebengebirge, cooling equipment, stable and furniture to Gerhard von Bonn and his wife, Catherine Benders von Bonn, for 1440 Taler. From this money that had to take 300 taler for debts, but the rest was divided among the children. They received free transportation to Mainz. Arnold Shoemaker's widow was Agnes Roesen, and the family estate was from the mothers not the father's side. Agnes died soon after 1655. Of the minor children mentioned above, Arnold was the son of Arnold and Agnes; Adele was the daughter of Theiss (Mathias) Bonn, son-in-law of Agnes; about Catherine there is a question, although Peter Shoemaker did
have a daughter, Catherine, who could have been named for Peter's sister.

From Mainz the family moved to Kriegsheim, near Worms, and it is well known
that Peter and George Shoemaker were converted at Kriegsheim about 1659 from the Mennonite to the Quaker faith by William Ames and George Rolfe, missionaries of William Penn. By the year, 1685, Peter's wife and George Shoemaker himself, had both died. Arnold Shoemaker, the younger, third brother of Peter and George, remained a Mennonite, and was still living in Kriegsheim in 1685. There is no reason to believe he ever emigrated to America. A brother-in-law of Peter, George, and Arnold Shoemaker was Mathias Bonn, who was living at Kriegsheim in 1685. Records also speak of a foster son of Peter Shoemaker also at Kriegsheim in the same year - Rohrig Otto, possibly Otto
Rohrig.

The preceding material was brought to light and developed through the research
of Wilhelm Niepoth and Dr. Walther Risler, both of Crefeld, Germany. (See "From Kreigsheim to Pennsylvania" by Wilhelm Niepoth, Germantown Crier, March 1957.

Peter Shoemaker, widower, arrived in Pennsylvania in 1685 and settled in Germantown with his only son, Peter, Jr., and three daughters:- Mary, Frances, and Gertrude. Another daughter, wife of Dielman Kolb, remained and died in Germany.

NOTE : Care must be observed in working the Peter Shoemaker Chart, prepared some years ago by T. Maxwell Potts. In it, Peter Shoemaker, 3rd, the son of Peter Shoemaker, Jr., is confused with Peter Shoemaker of Reading, Pennsylvania, and the latter allied in turn with John Shoemaker, soon of George of Reading.

The following is included here, though much of the connection at the point noted (***) may not be accurate.

The following is from The Shoemaker Family by Thomas H. Shoemaker "---at the following from the `List of Arrivals' show; `The Francis & Dorothy, from London, Richard Bridgeman, Commander, arrived in Philadelphia, 8 Mo 14th 1685 (old style). Among the passengers were Peter Schumacher, and Peter his son, Mary his daughter, and Sarah his Cousin and Frances and Gertrude his daughters."

Judge Pennypacker, the Pennsylvania Magazine, vol iv, p 22, gives Peter's
history as follows: "Peter Schumacher, an early Quaker Convert from the Mennonites, is the first person definitely ascertained to have come from Krisheim the little village in the Palatinate to which so much prominence has been given. Fortunately, we know under what auspices he arrived. By an agreement with Dirk Shipman of Crefeld, dated August 16, 1685, he was to proceed with the first good wind to Pennsylvania, and there receive 200 acres from Herman Op den Graeff, on which he should erect a dwelling, and for which he should pay a rent of two rix dollars a year.' I think the judge errs when he says Peter was the first person known to have come from Kriegsheim. There is little doubt Jacob Shoemaker (Schumacher, Sr -1665) came from that village in 1683, also Gerhard Hendricks the same year; of the latter there is no question. The judge has a deed of Peter's written by Pastorius.

Peter Shoemaker, Sen., seems to have been a man of considerable importance in
the town. In 1693, he was one of four person who signed the certificate of Samuel Jennings, as a delegate from the Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting to the Yearly Meeting at London. He died in Germantown in 1707, aged 85 years.

Besides his son, Peter, Jr., and his 3 daughters, Mary Francis and Gertrude, who accompanied him over, he had two others. The fifth child, a daughter, married Dielman Kolb. She never emigrated. Of this marriage, four of their children became Mennonite ministers; all but two eventually emigrating to this country. The name is usually now spelled Kulp.

Peter Shoemaker (Schumacher), and family sailed from London on the ship `The
Francis and Dorothy', arrived at Philadelphia August 16th, 1685

From Susan Shoemaker (MVS.UDEl.EDU)

The following is an article that appeared in the Daily Local News, West Chester, Pennsylvania, on Monday 2-8-1926.

WARNING: my own research at the Pennsylvania Historical Society has NOT
confirmed that the Peter Shoemaker or Schumacker (1622-1707) is the Progenitor of our family. There is a gap in the genealogy presented here, between his only son, Peter Shoemaker, Jr and the Peter Shoemaker living in Sadsbury Township, Pennsylvania in 1789. My research indicates that the Peter Shoemaker of Sadsbury Township came to this country on board the MINERVA in 1767, and consequently is the original progenitor of our line in America.

SHOEMAKER FAMILY ABOUT PARKESBURG (Pennsylvania)

Albert H. Gerberich of Parkesburg, who has been in the United States Consul
service in Central America and Germany, is devoting a portion of his leisure to the study of family history, and indecently has run back over the line of a widely known family near his home. He gives the results as follows for the benefit of NEWS readers.

The SHOEMAKER FAMILY of Parkesburg and vicinity is probably the oldest family of original German extraction living in that section of Chester County. While
the Shoemakers have not resided in the neighborhood of Parkesburg as long as the Boyds, Cowans, Marshes and Moores and other families of Scotch-Irish ancestry, yet they are more numerous at the present day and bid fair to be a representative family of the Borough for many years to come.

The most remote ancestors of this ancient stock were the brothers, Peter and
George Schumacher, who lived in the town of Kriesheim in the Palatinate, Germany, two and a half centuries ago, and are frequently mentioned in the diaries of William Penn. These brothers were German Quakers and were persecuted because of their religious beliefs, so that they accepted the invitation of Penn's agents to emigrate to the province of Pennsylvania when this country had only a handful of European inhabitants.

Peter Shoemaker or Schumacker (1622-1707) arrived in Philadelphia, August 16,
1685, on the vessel `Francis and Dorothy', bringing with him his only son, Peter, his three daughters and his cousin, Sarah Shoemaker. He settled in Germantown when that section of the city of Philadelphia was all woodland and occupied only by the Indians. His is said to have been Germantown's first Sheriff; he was a close personal friend of Francis Daniel Pastorius, its founder of whom Whittier says' "His door was free to men of every name, he welcomed all the seeking souls who came, and no man's faith he made a cause of
blame"

And when an old man, Peter was one of the founders of the Germantown Friend's
School. Peter Shoemaker, Jr, married Margaret Apde Graeff at Abingdon Frined's Meeting on February 26, 1697. They had five daughters and five sons, the later being
names Peter, Daniel, Isaac, John and Samuel. Their descendants are legion today in Delaware, Montgomery, Chester and Philadelphia counties.

One of the five sons (here is what appears to be the error) mentioned above was the father of Peter Shoemaker, who came to Sadsbury Township in the year 1789 and settle on a farm north of Sadsburyville. The names of only two of his children are known: Joel and Peter. Peter 1792-1862) is buried in Octorare Cemetery, but there is no records on hand regarding his descendants.

Joel Shoemaker had two sons, Peter and Joel Franklin, whose descendants are
living in Parkesburg to this day.

Another Pioneer Settler Goes to Reward Tuesday

Although death was not unexpected, it grieved his family and wide circle of friends deeply when Jim VanBebber passed away early Tuesday morning at the family home in the north part of Tipton. Mr. VanBebber had been in ill health for many years and bed-fast for the past two. He bore his illness with quiet patience and with a calmness of spirit that bespoke the purity of soul within the suffering body.
Funeral services were conducted from the Church of Christ Wednesday afternoon where a large concourse of friends gathered to pay respect to an old time friend and fellow townsman. Elder R.F. Whitaker spoke consolingly to the bereaved family and a male quartet sang two very impressive numbers.
Interment was made in the Tipton Cemetery.
Mr. VanBebber came to Oklahoma in his young manhood, lived near Waurika for several years and then moved to this community. He was engaged in farming as long as his health permitted. He is survived by one son, and his widow, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
The Tribune wishes to join with the many friends of the family in expressing their deep sympathy in the loss of their loved one.

A VAN BIBBER MYSTERY

By Ron Biar ([email protected])

(The following is an excerpt from a book Ron is writing. The following article may not be reproduced without permission from the author.)

During the Civil War two Confederate Officers were killed in the action in Westminster, Maryland, on June 29, 1863, under other than normal circumstances. Lieutenants John William Murray and William Saint Pierre Gibson, both of the 4th Virginia Cavalry.

According to Miss Mary B. Shellman, of Westminster, who witnessed the battle, a governess from out of town came into town after the days action and is said to have recognized the two Confederate Officers killed that day. She said, "one was a relative and the other a friend." I have discovered that the governess was Rebecca or Louisa Denton of the Thomas Emory Van Bibber family.

The bodies of Lieutenants Murray and Gibson were buried on July 1, 1863, at 9 A.M., in the Union Meeting House Yard and taken up and buried in the Ascension Episcopal Church Parish Yard on August 13, 1863.

Interring Murray and Gibson in the Ascension Episcopal Church Yard would have taken time for proper arrangements to be made. Many stumbling blocks had to be overcome, because on August 3, 1863, the Ascension Episcopal Church passed very stringent rules as to who could be buried in the Parish Yard. If one were not a church member, permission had to be granted by the Rector and the Custodians. Based upon these new rules, how is it that Lieutenants Murray and Gibson were moved from the Union Meeting House to the Ascension Episcopal Church Parish Yard? Someone of exceptional influence must have been responsible to effect the movement. The individual responsible for this move would have to have wielded unprecedented power in the Ascension Episcopal Church.

This person would have to have had absolute influence and control in the Ascension Episcopal Church to have them buried there. Who paid for the unearthing, movement, and reburial in the Parish Yard? Circumstantial evidence would suggest that the individual responsible for these actions can be none other than Thomas Emory Van Bibber. Mr. Van Bibbers governess was from Virginia and possibly Mr. Van Bibber might have had southern sympathies or the governess exerted pressure to have Murray and Gibson moved to a more acceptable site. According to an entry in the Ascension Episcopal Church records, Thomas Emory Van Bibber, Senior, was appointed Warden in the Ascension Episcopal Church on April 3, 1863. This would have granted additional power to Mr. Van Bibber.

The Van Bibbers were originally from Utrecht, Holland, and settled on part of Bohemia Manor in Cecil County. Some of the descendants of these settlers moved to Baltimore, and went into the shipping business at Felts Point, then a rival of Baltimore, but now part of it. They were very successful and built a handsome house on Thames Street. After having amassed a considerable fortune at Fells Point, Washington Van Bibber (1778-1849) and his wife Lucretia Emory, moved to Avondale in Carroll County, two miles southwest of Westminster, and purchased the home of Legh Master.

Legh Master had an infamous reputation. He reportedly became enamored of his black servant girl and was infuriated with the intrusion of Sam, her sweetheart, and had him thrown into an iron furnace. He then proceed to brick the girl up in an oven, alive. When the kitchen in the house was torn apart due to a fire in the 1930s, it was found to contain a human skeleton. Other stores tell of Master dressing in a white sheet at night and running around his grounds crying, "stick, stuck."

Isaac Van Bibber, son of Washington Van Bibber, was born January 17. 1810, studied law in Winchester, Virginia, and was admitted to the bar. He spent three years in European travel, and returned to Avondale, and died there September 28, 1847.

From the Diary of Isaac Van Bibber, "In the evening, I took a long stroll with Brent along the banks of the Patapsco. During our ramble we talked over all our reminiscences and adventures in Winchester, Va, where we had both studied law together." This must be the Van Bibber Virginia connection! Thomas Emory Van Bibber was the brother of Isaac.

While at Avondale, the Van Bibbers, through Isaac Van Bibber, as a result of his collections in March 1844, built the Ascension Episcopal Church in Westminster. Two years later the Ascension Church was consecrated on Ascension Day, 1846. And there the Van Bibbers reinterred the body of Legh Master, originally buried at Avondale. No wonder. Who would like to have this man in their backyard?

The Van Bibbers would have encountered little opposition, if any, in the burial of the infamous Legh Master in the Ascension Church Yard. Why should they, they built the church. The movement of Murray and Gibson would not have presented any obstacle, but might have caused some problems later after the citizens of Westminster realized what had been done. Thus, more than likely, the sudden return of the governess (Dentons) to Virginia in August 1863. The "scapegoats?"

It is curious that not one of Thomas Emory Van Bibbers immediate family members was buried at the Ascension Church Yard after August 13, 1863. And Thomas is notably absent from the church records after the burial of Murray and Gibson on August 13, 1863. Does this mean that Thomas was in disfavor with the church hierarchy after this date? We may never know the extent of the problems caused by the burial of Murray and Gibson, but can only surmise the problems created were significant and far-reaching. In support of this conclusion, Thomas is not buried in this Church Yard next to his wife Elizabeth, who died on October 24, 1853. Why would one not be buried next to his wife, father, and brothers and sisters?

THE CENSUS

From Judi Bentley ([email protected])

It was the first day of census, and all through the land
each pollster was ready ... a black book in hand.
He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride,
his book and some quills were tucked close by his side.
A long winding ride down a road barely there,
toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air.

The woman was tired, with lines on her face
and wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place.
She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table
and she answered his questions ... the best she was able.
He asked her of children. Yes, she had quite a few --
the oldest was twenty, the youngest not two.

She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red;
his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed.
She noted each person who lived there with pride,
and she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside.
He noted the sex, the color, the age...
the marks from the quill soon filled up the page.

At the number of children, she nodded her head
and saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead.
The places of birth she "never forgot"
was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not?
They came from Scotland, of that she was clear,
but she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here.

They spoke of employment, of schooling and such,
they could read some ... and write some ... though really not much.
When the questions were answered, his job there was done
so he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun.
We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear,
"May God bless you all for another ten years."

Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me
as we search for the people on our family tree.
We squint at the census and scroll down so slow
as we search for that entry from long, long ago.
Could they only imagine on that long ago day
that the entries they made would effect us this way?

If they knew would they wonder at the yearning we feel
and the searching that makes them so increasingly real.
We can hear if we listen the words they impart
through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart.
