"Craig, Delinda (Boone) was born February 7, 1802 and was the granddaughter of the famous Daniel Boone. Delinda married James Craig and seven known children born to this union are: Lemuel, Nathan B., Melcena Morris, Emma Cutler, James, Lionel, and Elizabeth.

On April 24, 1856 approximately sixty women led by Delinda, took law and order into their own hands to rid Hanover of its drinking and gambling building. The women worked at destroying the building with crowbars and ropes until all four walls tumbled down. Delinda died September 18, 1877 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery." Other references tell that the ladies carried out their threat even though the saloon owner had said he would shoot anyone who attempted to put him out of business. Delinda, leading the women, chopped holes in the walls while others laced ropes in and out of them and the windows. After they pulled on the ropes, the walls gave way, the roof caved in, and the building was such a complete wreck that the owner left town and never returned. This incident may make Hanover the birthplace of the American Temperance Movement. Years later one of the women involved in this act moved to Gutherie, OK, and lived next door to the renowned Cary Nation who became the American crusader for temperance. It is said that Cary Nation got her inspiration from hearing about the Hanover women of 1856.

OBIT: Franklin REPUBLICAN - Fri 11 Mar 1892 p 8 - Edinburg item:

A. J. VAN BIBBER, aged about 82 years, died Wedns. morning at 4 o'clock. He had been in failing health. He served a term in the German Army, was a Mexican soldier, and served 3 years as a volunteer, and five years in the regular army -- in all about 15 years as a soldier. He was wounded several times, but not seriously. He was a man firm in his beliefs, and skeptical on religious matters. He drew a pension for his wounds, but was in moderate circumstances.
-----

REF: Edbg COURIER --Thurs 9 Sep 1886 p 2 col 3 - FRANKLIN STAR - 26 ult.

Among the old soldiers before the pension board yesterday was ANDREW VAN
BIBBER of Edenburg who is in his 74th year. The old gentleman was in almost fourteen years of war for his country, fighting Indians on the frontier, in the Mexican War, and in the rebellion. He bears many battle scars. He related one instance where he and twenty-seven comrades, while acting as a surveying party in Oregon in 1849 with KIT CARSON as a guide -- they were compelled to live three months on dog meat and dog soup. He is a very intelligent gentleman, and his stories are far more interesting than those found in a book.

SUCCESS STORY

By Walter M Bailey ([email protected])

And David J. Brown ([email protected])

From Walter M. Bailey

Donna, you will remember that earlier you gave me information on the VanBibber family with ties to the Skaggs family. In that data you gave me the following:
John Campbell Robinson VanBibber, son of David Campbell Robinson VanBibber and Jane Ann Williams, married Catherine Malinda Taylor and they had a son George W. VanBibber who married Harriet "Lemmie" Juleminie Bailes.

If you will remember I took notice of Catherine Malinda Taylor because my great grandmother was Mary A. Taylor so I was wondering if they could be related. This evening I was searching my file and found the following:
Unknown Taylor married Malinda (last name unknown) who was born about 1809. They had the following children:
Martha Taylor born about 1827
Hugh Taylor born about 1830
Margaret Taylor born about 1833
Catherine Taylor born about 1835
Ruth Taylor born about 1840
Elizabeth Taylor born about 1842
Mary A. Taylor born September 2, 1844 in Virginia and died October 22, 1924 in Sparks, Nicholas County, West Virginia. She married Walker Bolar (date unknown). To date I have found nothing about him.

I am inclined to believe that Catherine Malinda Taylor is the same as my Catherine Taylor. Somehow I believe there has to be a connection. These names have to be more than coincidental. What do you think?

By carbon copy of this message I am asking Bruce Logan if he might have any information that would substantiate the names of Catherine Malinda Taylor's parents. I am hoping her mother's name was Malinda.

Bruce, perhaps it would be helpful if you understood how Donna and I got into this exchange. Initially, I was searching for the Wills surname and this led to the Skaggs surname. My mother's first cousin Walter Skaggs married Lovie VanBibber, the daughter of George and "Lemmie" VanBibber. Donna gave me family information on the VanBibber family and when I saw the name Catherine Malinda Taylor my antenna went up hoping that there may be a possible relationship with my Mary A. Taylor. I would appreciate any information you might have and willing to share.

Checking it out! My Malinda's father was Solomon (Big)Taylor and mother Malinda Nicely. She came from a very large, mixed up family, many of whose descendants live near Doty, WA. One is very knowledgeable who I will try to contact. I will check out These Taylors in Bobbitt's book of Nicholas Co. censuses. Many names in this message are similar to our Taylors names, but most are very common.

From David J. Brown

Walter,

Hi there! From just a cursory review of the census records it appears that there are two Malindas, since there are two (mother and daughter) just in my family's listing under Solomon (Big). The other Malinda could easily be a relative, of course. The other names under hers look like the ones you are naming. I don't recollect the name Bolar in the
Nicholas Co. chasing I've done. Would there be an outside chance that it could be Boley? That name is shown in W. G. Brown's book, "History of Nicholas County West Virginia".

I've had some contact with Taylor relatives who are descended from Polly, sister of my line's Malindas, who have done quite a bit of Taylor chasing.

With a name like Brown, I can sure sympathize with the difficulty of tracing people with the same first name! To add to it, I'm a Jr. and my son is a III! My grt. grandfather, David Campbell Robinson VB, was named after his mother's father, David Robinson. I don't know where the "Campbell" came from, but it was continued with my grt. grandfather, John Campbell Robinson VB. I could never understand how my Dad got his name, David John Brown. It turned out that I found out that his birth certificate said "John David Brown" and I later found some of his youthful scribbling that said the same thing. I think he changed it himself when he moved to Minnesota, where everyone knew him as Dave.

Speaking of names, I just found out that my grandmother's (Lucy VB) middle name was Belle, just by reading the Nicholas County Historical Newsletter! After all these years!

Hope you can make some sense out of all this stuff. Let me know If I can be of help.

Your possible cousin,
Dave

From Richad H. Sell ([email protected])

Hi, I recently received a document from the Library Company of Philadelphia.
It was a copy of a bond between Mathias Van Bebber and Claus Rittenhausen. It was written and signed in 1714 by my ancestor Hendrick Sellen (a.1665-1749). He also signed with an X for his apparent wife Elizabeth Sellen. This is the first and only indication we've had that Sellen had a wife Elizabeth. So I wondered who she could be. I discovered that Mathias Van Bebber had a sister Elizabeth who married Herman OpdenGraeff.

According to Wm. Hull in "William Penn and the Dutch Quaker Migration to
Pennsylvania", Herman died about 1701, and Hull did not know whatever happened
to his widow. Could it be that Hendrick Sellen married her? Sellen did have a daughter Elizabeth, who married Arnold Van Vossen Junior. They were all Mennonites.

I'd like to hear your comments.

Sorry for lack of details on the subjects of interest to me! I'm sending this from my laptop and don't have all data with me.

Does anyone have more information on this couple who were married circa 1830 in southern Illinois. I have some information on his son A. Clark Vanbibber and his descendants. I'm looking for the parents of Matthias and Sarah, and any information their family.

I salute all the hard-working Van Bibber sleuths for providing us with so many special leads and stories.
