Van Bibber Pioneers Electronic Newsletter
Volume 3, Number 8   ·   June 1999

Greetings:

It has been a busy month for the Van Bibber Pioneers. We continue to grow and as we grow some of or new subscribers submit new and interesting information to the newsletter.

I apologize to the subscribers who submitted material for this issue of the newsletter and did not get published. There was simply too much material to fit into the limited amount of space. That is a pleasant problem. However, I still encourage everyone to continue to research and submit that research and queries to the newsletter.

By the way, Jack Coomans is now acting as a translator for the newsletter. Jack is from the Netherlands and there have been a few queries in Dutch. Jack has been so kind to translate for the newsletter and reply to the Dutch inquires. Thanks Jack!

Along the same line, Jack has agreed to interpret the Dutch language will of Matthias Van Bibber if someone can get a copy. At least I think it was Matthias Van Bibber. Can someone confirm or deny this assumption and tell the subscribers where this will is located? Any volunteers?

We now have two hundred and sixty subscribers.

The editor reserves the right to edit contributions to the newsletter.

I have been reading the VanBibber newsletters in the archives, and I have gathered a lot of information on the VanBibbers. I noticed that no one has submitted a copy of Isaac Michael VanBibbers obituary. I would like to contribute it for all the information I have received.

" Major Isaac VanBibber, early intrepid and enterprising pioneer, the high souled, and faithful friend, the obliging and kind neighbor, the fond and loving parent, is no more, The powerful arm that once grasped and held with an immovable steadiness and 'unerring aim' the ponderous rifle, is paralyzed forever. The noble and piercing eye, in which gleamed, indomitable spirit and proud defiance is sealed by icy impress of relentless death. Sustaining a prolonged and deprivation of health with characteristic philosophy and firmness, on the 30th ultimo, in Montgomery Co., MO, this worthy and respected man resigned his vitality to the fiat, that controls human nature. The Major was born in 1771 in Greenbrier Co., VA, removed when young to KY, and settled in 1799 on the Missouri River, 20 miles above St. Charles. He married a grand-daughter of Daniel Boone, the first white child born in the 'dark and bloody ground'. In 1816 he settled
at Loutre Lick, and though dangers of the most threatening kind, surrounded him and his family, he maintained with admirable nerve his situation, and many a subtle and larking foe has passed from time to eternity by his vigilant agency. For years, he kept public entertainment, and travelers will long remember his hospitality, his interesting colloquial powers, his thrilling accounts of things chilling to the blood. As a member of the high
and Holy institution of Masonry, he discharged without ostentation and with much liberality, his duties, and the widow and orphan, and indeed every object of charity, received his open hand, the required assistance-innumerable benedictions attend his memory."

This obituary appeared in a St. Louis Newspaper, I do not have the date, but I have a Xerox copy of a portion of the page, that included this obituary.

COMING OUT PARTY FOR CENSUS

By Walter O. Van Bibber ([email protected])

Since census data is so crucial for researchers, I thought the following article would interest you.

Coming Out Party for Census: The Census Bureau and several private-sector
partners yesterday held a grand opening ceremony for a data capture center in Maryland, which will be used to organize and store demographic information from an estimated 40 million questionnaires for the 2000 census.

Calling the groundbreaking "historic...a turning point in the history of the census," Census Director Kenneth Prewitt said that when future historians write about the census, "one of the chapters will certainly be [about the] data capture strategy." The cavernous center is one of four facilities nationwide that the bureau will use to handle the estimated 120 million questionnaires that Americans fill out for the census. The Lockheed Martin
Corp. system, called Data Capture System 2000, integrates scanners and computers to quickly move information on the questionnaires from paper to servers to Census Bureau databases, where the census information will be stored indefinitely. The system marks the first time the bureau has used scanners to harvest census data. Lockheed Martin system architects and engineers designed the system into 51 independent, but linked clusters, each outfitted with scanners, servers and workstations. The network of clusters keeps track of each returned questionnaire from the moment the envelopes containing the questionnaires are opened until the paper questionnaires themselves are put into storage. The bureau hired TRW Inc. to build and manage three of the centers and to renovate a permanent facility in Indiana to serve as a temporary data center. TRW contracted with Computer Sciences Corp. to hire, train and manage about 2,500 employees who will work in the Maryland center. The bureau also hired Lockheed Martin to design the
software that will be used to parse and store the demographic data on the questionnaires. The three-year, roughly $228 million contract marks the first time the bureau has outsourced a major census. (Federal Computer Week)

Subject: MARGUERY (VANBIBBER) BOUNDS (1740-1844)

Looking for the place of burial for Marguery (VanBibber) Bounds, mother
of Olive VanBibber who was the wife of Daniel Boone's son......Nathan.

I am of the understanding that she spent her later years living in the
home of Nathan where she died at the ripe old age of 104 sometime during
the year 1844 in Green County, Missouri.

Desire to know the name of the cemetery and where the cemetery is
located. Marguery (VanBibber) Bounds is my ggggg-grandmother.

I have been reading, time and time again, that Isaac Van Bibber married Hester Op den Graeff. What is the documentation for this marriage? I found two sources on the Op den Graeffs, Lutz and Berger, that stated "Herman op den Graeff married (1) Hester Van Bibber, b. 11/18/1659, d. 11/22/1681 and (2) Catherine Vond der Pypen." Where does Isaac Van Bibber fit into this picture? There was no reference to him in these two books.

Can you help me clear up this confusion?

Thanks, Martha

This John Van Bibber is driving me nuts! The "treason" reference was from Ancestry.com on the GenPageFinder. When I tried for the suggested website "Greenbrier Queries" the screen said no longer there!

I still don't know if this "treason" refers to "my" John or not! I am going to Salt Lake City in October and can do more there with "hands on" books!

I noticed on Ancestry.com that the DAR has not completed putting ALL the lineage books online yet. I have seen other references to the following: John Van Bibber, bn Lebanon, PA 1732 mar to Chloe Staniford 1765 AND another John Van Bibber, bn MD 1740 ALSO married Chloe Staniford. Some reference John's parents as PETER and others as JAMES! Also found a reference to Chloe which said she married William ADY 1770!

The John PETER Van Bibber I am looking for was a Captain in the AR--
fought at Mt. Pleasant (as did several other Van Bibbers!) and died in Kanawah Co. VA (or WVA) ca 1820 and was mar to Chloe.

Any chance you have info to clear up these two Johns???

FamilyTreeMaker (I don't belong so only can get the freebies) had several entries that were "not available" for John!

Have tried several other sites but no clarification! Let me know if I can subscribe to your newsletter!

I have collected a lot of conflicting data and wondered if anyone has sourced answers to the following questions:
1. Re: Jacob Isaacs Van Bebber who died in 1705 in Cecil County, Maryland and was born in Krefeld. What is his birth date?
2. What is the full name and a birth date for his wife Christina?
3. When was his daughter Debra (wife of Herman Isaacs Op Den Graeff) born?

I am trying to straighten out my tree and have date problems!

LS,

Vriendelijke groet,
Flip ten Cate

Hello Bruce ,
The translation:

Trough the dutch Home pages by Familyname I seen that you are researching
the genealogy of the van Bebber family. That interest me, because of mine researching the Ten Cate family, and the marriage of Trijntje van Bebber with (quote from memory) Abraham ten Cate, somewhere in the 17th century. In case you have any data, I would like to hear from you. I myself will ckeck what data I have myself - for example I remeber I have seen data about van Bebber in the Amsterdam municipality archives.

With kind regards,

Flip ten Cate
