THE NAMES THE SAME: Your Ancestors may NOT be where you think they should be!

THE NAMES THE SAME: Your Ancestors may NOT be where you think they should be!

One of the puzzles incurred when looking for Ohio ancestors is the fact that Ohio used (and uses) the same name for many communities, and some towns appear clear across the State from the "logical" location.

My favorite examples are that Shelby OH is not in Shelby County (its in Richland County); Franklin OH is not in Franklin County (its in Warren County) and Warren OH is not in Warren County (its in Trumbull County).

To make matters worse, the above examples are modern examples - some duplicate towns have now disappeared. There was once a BERLIN in Delaware County listed in the 1850 Census (now covered by the Alum Creek Reservoir). To an Ohio-born person, this is confusing enough; if youve never been to Ohio and are trying to find an "illusive" someone, you might be looking in the wrong place!

TEN CATE VAN BIBBER CONNECTION

By Flip ten Cate ([email protected])

I received your reply, and that of your (Dutch) subscriber as well. I'm sorry I didn't realize that you are American (or English?).

I return this message from my personal, instead of my professional, e-mail address.

I got back to my files and family-histories, and this is what they came up with, regarding the Van Bebbers:

Abraham ten Cate, born in Borne ca 1615, dec. Enschede ca 1666, son of Hendrik Gerritsz ten Cate and Hendrikje Jansdr., married in Zwolle, Jan. 1647, Trijntje van Bebber, dr. of Abraham Simonsz van Bebber. She remarried the merchant Hendrik Andriesz van Lochem.

His niece, Geertje ten Cate (dr of Berend Hendriksz ten Cate), married (in Zwolle, July 1647) her brother Jurriaan Abrahamsz van Bebber.

In the book De Familie Ten C(K)ate uit Borne, by C.L. ten Cate (Utrecht, 1986) is an article about the family Van Bebber.

It states that Trijntje and Jurriaan van Bebber (both Mennonites, as were the Ten Cates) are children from Abraham Simons (van Bebber), living in Zwolle, in the Smeen. He became 11 Feb. 1629 citizen of Zwolle. He was a chamois-leather maker and came from the Gulick surroundings (Germany). In Krefel is a tiny village called Bebber.

The book states that these are the only Van Bebbers in Zwolle - but there is an Elisabeth van Bebber (Dordrecht 1644-The Hague 1704) who married the very wealthy merchant Johan Diercques from Middelburg - he lived a wealthy life in Amsterdam.

Some Catherina van Bebber was married with Jan Luyckens (or Luyx) from Enschede when she sold some property in 1680 to Teunis ten Cate. She lived in Borne, where she is mentioned as a widow in 1684.

Some Samuel Pennypacker wrote a genealogy on the Van Bebber-family, which is now kept in the Mennonite Library of the University of Amsterdam. Lots of them emigrated to the United States where they became the first members of the Mennonite Church of William Penn.

In the Van Blijdenstein-family archives are some letters from Hester van Bebber in Pennsylvania, d.d. 1738. Her niece, Maria van Bebber (dr of Huibert van Bebber and Maria de Veer) married 8 Nov. 1761 in Utrecht with Jan Blijdenstein.

I think I once noticed a coat of arms of the Van Bebbers in the Amsterdam Archives - but I am not sure anymore. It must have been years ago, but I think to recall that is pictures an upright deer. If this sounds familiar, I would very much like to hear it, because my own family bears the same coat-of-arms.

This is everything I know of the Van Bebbers. Id appreciate it if you could tell me anything at all of the origins of the Van Bebber family.

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS ON THE DUTCH VAN BIBBER FAMILY

By Anna L. Lutz ([email protected])

I think that with Jack, and now Flip ten Cate, you have two persons, who can help with the VBs in Holland. I once had a letter of James K. Van Bibber, Jr, written in the 40s asking about Van Bibbers in Holland, with very little success. So far all research there seems to have little or no information for this family in Holland. Here Flip, turns up the most information, that I have ever seen so far. (Flip must be Philip)

If Abraham Simons Van Bebber, came from area surrounding Gulick (Germany). The Village of Bebber was in Duchy of Cleves. This may lead to the origin of Isaac Van Bebber, who married Hester op den Graeff, that is if Abraham, can be proved, he is a near relative of Isaac.

We now have Abraham Simons Van Bebber, with a daughter, Trijinje (Catherine) Van Bebber, who married Abraham ten Cate, and a son, Jurrian Abrahams Van Bebber, who married Geertje ten Cate (Gertrude ?), a niece of Abraham ten Cate. The odds do seem, that we may have a ten Cate direct line somewhere, with the mentioned Coat-of-Arms, in Flip's family.

The Coat-Of-Arms for Hendrick Van Bebber, was a picture of a Coffee Bag, he being a coffee merchant. Like Flip, I think I once saw another with a standing deer, not sure now.

Re: Catherine Van Bebber, who married Jan Luyckens (Loux), this sounds like Jan Luckens, Original Germantown Settlers. Wouldn't that be something for their descendants to play around with?

The Van Blydenstein Family intermarried with the family of Hendrick Jacobs Van Bebber, (son of Jacob Isaacs Van Bebber), and Huibert, is Henrick's son, who remained in Holland. We had this before with Huibert's marriage to Maria de Veer. Their daughter marriage to Jan Blydenstein.

FOLLOW UP TO THE QUESTION OF THE VAN BIBBER WILL IN THE DUTCH LANGUAGE

By Earl K. Harvey ([email protected])

Matthias, brother of Henry and Isaac. From "History of Cecil County, Maryland" by Geo. Johnston, page 188 (published in 1881) indicates his will proved in 1739 (in Cecil Co). Possibly someone near or in Cecil Co could check...if not there, the archives at Annapolis, MD.

I'm about 3000 miles too far away to check.

Earl Harvey

ps same paragraph indicates Matt's brother Henry's Will written in Utrecht, Holland was found, or a translation of same found, in the records of the Orphans Court of Cecil County, MD.

MERRITT VAN BIBBERS CEMETERY

By Mary E. Beau ([email protected])

E-mail of 7 July 1999

A couple of weeks ago I was in Tipton, Indiana....went to the Old cemetery where Merritt Van Bibber is buried. It is in really bad shape....to the point, Merritt's stone was still in the ground.......no others around his. The remainder have been overturned, broken, thrown around.....but the grass has been mowed......Duh! What is wrong here? It was really a shame to see. I think the cemetery is on Hwy #31...corner of the Flamingo
Motel (still there).

Just thought you might be interested!

SUCCESS STORY

Peggy Mayfield (lmayfield#stlnet.com)

The Original 13 Germantown Settlers

Robin,

I have that Debra van Bebber married Herman Op den Graeff on May 7, 1691, in
Germantown. Herman passed away on May 2, 1704. After that date, but before 1711, Debra married Dirck Keyser. Unfortunately I have no documents to back up these three dates. All of this information I have received from other researchers.

What children and birth dates do you have for Debra and Herman? I have 4 children.

By Earl K. Harvey ([email protected])

On Mar 28, 1999 to the Orig 13 List you contributed much info on the Arnold Schumacher line. This was most informative. In your listing in generation #5 which has wandered into the Van Bebbers the paragraph: Isaac Michael(5)Van Bibber born abt 1724 in Cecil Co MD and died 10 Oct 1774 married Sarah Davis.......then listed are their children:

i Peter Van Bibber m. Sarah Yokcome

ii Rebecca Van Bibber

iv James Van Bibber b abt 1768 VA d abt 1834

v Isaac Michael Van Bibber 20Oct 1771, Greebrier Co., VA d. 30Sep 1840

I show a 6th child (my wife's line) that being one John Van Bebber who married Margaret Chrisman. Do you show this John VB who married Margaret Chrisman having different parents? I am attaching Isaac's page from my FTM program. Let me know what you think.

Best regards,

A STORY ABOUT MARSHALL VAN BIBBER

By Ann Nechodom ([email protected])

Here's another true story from Mother's past:

Marshall Van Bibber was a man always on the move. As a contractor and builder he was often on the road late at night. On one such occasion he felt a hard pull on his team of horses as they strained against their load. He reached down to set the wagon brake and was knocked almost unconscious. He did reach home that night, but when he pulled into the yard he could hardly see because of a large flap of skin that hung down over his eye. He called to the two older boys to bring a pair of scissors. Clyde and Rolfe came running out to help and Hattie shoed Leslie and Louise off to bed to keep them out of the way. Rolfe cut off the dangling piece of scalp and tossed it into the grass. Clyde seeing the blood ran to get a horse and go for help; but when no horse left the barn Rolfe found where he had fainted and he rode to phone the doctor.

By daylight they found that the team had run over a long telephone wire that caught on the wagon and pulled until it snapped. If he hadn't reached down for the brake it would have decapitated him. No wonder Hattie worried when her menfolk were still gone after dark.

FOLLOW UP TO THE VAN BEBBER FUNERAL

By Gary R. Hawpe ([email protected])

Pat,

Thanks for the VB death dates from Oregon. I am interested in the death of William VAN BEBBER who is buried in the Odd Fellows cemetery. This just has to be William, the son of Peter VAN BEBBER and Sarah GRIMES. He married Sarah MARSH, of Iowa, about 1868 and lived their married life there in Wasco County. I have them recorded on the 1870, 1880, and 1900 census of that county. They lived in West Dalles Precinct according to the census records.

I'm sure Sarah is buried there with him and they had a son Marcus, born about 1875 and died before 1900. He will also probably be in the same plot. They had one other son, William "Willie" who was single in 1910 and lived there in The Dalles.

According to the 1880 and 1900 census, these are the only two children they had. Both are listed on the 1880 census, but on the 1900 census Sarah states she was the mother of two children and only one was living. Since "Willie" is listed with them in 1900, this tells us Marcus is deceased by then.

If you get to visit this cemetery, I would appreciate the dates off the tombstones if you are able to find them. With a stroke of good luck, you may find all four of them buried there in the same plot. Please keep me informed.

Thanks!

Isaac VanBibber and Sarah Davis
John VanBebber and Margaret Chrisman
Peter VanBebber and Sarah Grimes
William Houston VanBebber and Sarah J. Marsh

P.S. I have never been able to find the marriage of William and Sarah. He is 26 years of age and living with his parents on the 1860 census of Ray County, Missouri. They are married with a one year old son on the 1870 census of Wasco County. They probably married sometime around 1868. Sarah was born in Iowa about 1851, but I believe the MARSH family was in Oregon before 1860. Please keep your eyes open for a marriage on them somewhere there in or near Wasco County.

Do you know that we have another VB descendant that lives there in The Dalles? She is Kay BUTLER and she descends down through Sophronia Veronica VAN BIBBER and George DIXON. Its been a while since I last communicated with her and I have her e-mail listed as: ([email protected]) The last time I checked she had a website at: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/b/u/t/Kay-D-Butler/index.html -Warren LaBarre Family Home Page.

Dick, I'm sending this to you, since I know you live there in Oregon too. I will be getting back with you on the WALRAVEN family.

QUERIES

From Barbara Drew ([email protected])

Lazarus VanBebber, b 1807, was a son of Peter and Ellender Van Bebber. Martha, b 1805, was a daughter of James Vanbebber and Hannah Hoover. They were first cousins, both being born in Claiborne Co., TN. They lived in Macoupin Co., IL where their daughter, Almeda was born. In 1846 they valiantly headed for Oregon. It was not an easy trip and they left those following the Oregon Trail at the point where the California broke off. Then Jesse Applegate met them and said there was an easier route below Klamath Falls, OR that would get them there easier but it was not. We visited an Interpretive Center just past Grant's Pass which a brother and sister had worked on for 7 years. It was a dream of theirs and the brother built the center and they both made a short movie with local people acting the parts and explaining how rough the trail was. Signs, artifacts and dioramas covered 4000 square feet within the building. What a history
lesson we learned. Lazarus and Martha continued up to Benton and King's Valley where they laid out a claim, recorded in Benton Co. records as OR Donation Land claim #5129.

Almeda married Isaac King and had 9 children. Isaac died under mysterious circumstances as revealed by a newspaper clipping I have.

Then she married Andrew Jackson Zumwalt and had 4 more children.

Every year there is a King's Valley Reunion the Saturday after Father's Day in King's Valley. If anyone is related or would like more information I would be happy to share my holdings.

Has anyone actually seen tombstones or have a picture of same for Solomon H.
VanBibber and Mary Jane Bryson? We visited the Mount Airie Cemetery in Warren Co. Missouri, where they are said to be buried. The cemetery had not been cared for and there was a lot of destruction.

Thank you.

This with the same 3/28/99 posting to the Orig 13 on the Schumacher family. Listed in generation #5, children of John VB and Chloe Standiford.

You list: vii Anne Van Bibber b 19Sept. 1738. Above the list of children, parent John shows born Jan 1733 . Possibly a second spouse or child by a deceased spouse? I show the same group of children with the exception of the above Anne. I show a son Jacob, but have no birth, death, or marriage date or spouse.

Any help? All is appreciated.

I'm Back.........moving was awful but we are finally "almost" back to normal.

My question for this month is from Volume 2, Number 8, June 1998:
RE: Descendants of Isaac VB and Sarah Davis. On page #13, notes for Florence Temple Kincaid. It states she married Eugene Hutchings Vanbebber but no other information on him is given.

My question: Who was he? Where did he come from?

I can find no other reference to him anywhere! Thanks in advance!

The Van Bibber Digest V99#59 Sat 24 July1999 20:25:07-0700 (PDT).

In the middle of pp 7 was the pedigree of Harry Thomas Van Bibber and Jane Coreen Greenwalt Harry Thomas was my wife's uncle. On pp 6 was the pedigrees of Mary Elizabeth Van Bibber m Ralph Madison Sutton, also the pedigree of Ruby Esther Van Bibber m Frank Sutton. Harry, Elizabeth, and Esther were brother and sisters, children of William Lee Van Bibber m. Sarah Currens. My wife's father was Harold Van Bibber m Mary Etta Williams. Harold was another brother of Harry, Elizabeth, and
Esther Van Bibber. All the children are first cousins and all the Sutton children are double cousins. I submitted most of this data a couple years ago and I would like to know who submitted it this time.

From David Brown ([email protected])

A question of ancestry of Malinda Catherine Taylor, spouse of John Campbell Robinson Van Bibber and my great-grandmother. Malinda, also called Kate and Linda was born 25 Jan 1844 Rockbridge Co., VA, married 18 May 1865 in Nicholas Co., WV and died 22 Jan 1921 in Chehalis, Lewis Co. WA. Burial in Cloquato cemetery, near Chehalis, WA.

She was listed in the 1850 Nicholas Co., WV Census, Family # 466, as a child of Solomon Taylor (Big) and Malinda Taylor. Her death certificate lists her mother's maiden name as "Nicely" and birthplace as "Virginia".

I'm particularly interested in the parents of Solomon. Family tradition is that Malinda Catherine was related to President Zachary Taylor, but I've seen no data to support that.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
