I am hoping to connect JOHN DARLING, who was married to Susan VanBever to my ggg grandfather, Robert Darling, b. 1790, VA. and my gg grandfather, Robert Darling, b. 1825, Jackson Co., Oh., or William in Jackson Co, Jackson Twp. Need to find where in VA Robert came.

One possible clue is my ROBERT DARLING, b. 1790 might have been in War of 1812. Will send for this file. So far in this time period, there is one Robert in this area.

From: Ohio Historical Society Online.

Note: This George W Darling above in 1870 census in John Wheeler household is confirmed to be HIRAM GEORGE WILLIAM JASPER DARLING, later recorded WILLIAM JASPER DARLING, as proved by affidavit below: Feb-1878.

Mrs. Priscilla Wheeler - being sworn says - I took HIRAM DARLING to raise at the request of his mother when he was either between 5 & 6 - or 6 & 7 years of age. This was during the war. It was before Mrs. Darling had heard of his fathers death as she said. He has staid with me ever since.

I never received any money or other compensation from his mother for the support. There was no agreement that she should pay me anything. It was understood between her and me that I should provide for the boy - I saw her but once after her 2nd marriage. I never received any money or other compensation for the support of the boy from S. O. Barker or from anyone who had anything from him to buy me anything nor did I receive anything from anyone for his support. He lived with me til the present day continuously. Priscilla Wheeler, her x mark

ROBERT DARLING, deceased. Probate Court of Ross Co., Oh. HIRAM DARLING, one of the children of ROBERT DARLING, deceased, and former ward of S. O. Barker, guardian of the minor children and heirs of ROBERT DARLING, being now of the age of twenty one years, now ????? and for the purpose of account and settlement with his guardian S. O. Barker herewith files his exceptions to the three several accounts hereforth filed in this court in this case as follows. EXCEPTIONS TO FIRST ACCOUNT. 1st He has failed to fully account for all the money he received or was entitled to receive during the period covered by this account as pensions due and payable to him as such guardian. From 9-22-1869, the date of marriage of the widow and date from which pension began to 3-4-1870 he only accounts for $68.47 when the amount due and which was properly payable at $14 per month being $8 pension and $2 increase for 3 children for 5 month and 12 days $75.60. >From 3-4-1870 to 9-4-1870, inserted 6 mos, he charges himself with only $70 when it should be $84 at the same rates. From 9-4 to 12-4, 3 mos. he charges himself with $24 when it should be $42 at same rates. From 12-4 to 3-4-1871 he charges himself with $36 when it should be $37.20 leaving out a portion due EMERLY DARLING for 18 days from 12-4 to 12-22 being 18 days. Making a deficiency in all of the sum of $40.33 said guardian charging himself with only $342.47 when the true amount is $382.80. He further excepts to said first account in this. 1st That vouchers #2 - 15 are signed by mark without any attesting witnesses. 2nd That vouchers #'s 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11 & 13 show that the money therin shown 5to be paid was paid to LYDIA HEDRICK for the support of this complainant heir our Darling where in fact he was not ????? never had been supported by LYDIA HEDRICK during the guardianship of said S. O. Barker. 3rd That he paid out to EMERILLAS DARLING one of his wards as her receipt - signed by mark without witnesses on vouchers numbered 5, 7, 10, 12, 14 & 15 in all the sum of $45 also the sum of $100 on vouchers 2, 3, & 4 the one third of which $33.33 was for the safe port of EMMARILLIS making the total sum of $108.33 paid to her ????? to her use where under the law she was but entitled to the one third of $210 = $70 = being the amount of pension which was due and payable from 9-22-1869 to 12-22-1870 being 15 months at $14 per month, after deducting her proportion of the legitimate expenses. 4th That he excepts to vouchers from 2 to 15 generally as in sufficient - impoper, and indefinite and suspicious in appearances. 5th That as to the ????? asked without vouchers he except to #'s 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 11 as numbered on the right hand margins for the ????? that they are proper charges that should be covered by receipts for vouchers. 6th That #'s 8, 9, 10 are improper and illegal charges without any authority or warrant in law. 7th That #'s 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 & 18 are exhorbant and should be reduced to the sum of forty cents each and no more. EXCEPTIONS TO SECOND ACCOUNT 1st He excepts to the second account of his said guardian filed 10-8-1874 as being incorrect in the amount which should have been drawn as due during and in the time covered by said account which is $317 instead of #318, 15 days of pension at $2 per month due HIRAM not being accounted for. 3rd That voucher #1 & 8 were signed by EMMERILIS DARLING one of the wards for pension paid her individually and for which excepts even taken signed by mark without witnesses amounting to money to the sum of $31 where she had before that over drawn the amount of money she was entitled to receive, and therefore nothing owe her. 4th That vouchers # 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 10 show that the money paid when there was for the support of the complainat where he was not at that time under the care of LYDIA HEDRICK who is claimed received the money nor had he been since the appointment of said guardian. 5th That vouchers # 11 & 12 show that the money paid there in was improperly done and that the guardian had no authority or right to pay the same to CHARLES HEDRICK and especially not for the support of the complainant. 6th That items of charges without vouchers from one to twelve numbered for references use exorbitant , illegal and should not be allowed in a larger amount than 40 cents for each item save # 6 which should not be allowed without a proper voucher. EXCEPTIONS TO THIRD ACCOUNT 1st The exceptee to third account for the reason that vouchers # 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 & 18 were signed by LYDIA HEDRICK by mark withouth any witness. 2nd That vouch # 10 was signed by WILLIAM DARLING by mark without any witness or anything to show by what authority he receives the money that is accepted for. 3rd That vouchers # 22, 21, 20, 19, 2 & 1 were given and signed by CHARLES HEDRICK without anything to show he had any authority to receive the money therein shown who paid. 4th That vouchers 5, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19 & 22 show that money paid there on to LYDIA & CHARLES HEDRICK was in part for the support of complainant - when they were not or - than - time and never had supported him. 5th That the said vouchers are not improper shape and suspicious in appearances particularly vouchers 2, 13, & 15, which appears to have been changed. 6th That credits asked without vouchers # 3 & 4 as numbered for ????? should not be allowed without vouchers one and has 1 should not as theere is no such balance due; that #'s 2, 5, 6, 4, 8, 9, 10,11 & 12 are exorbitant and should be reduced to 40 cents each. The complainant excepts generally to the whole proceeding of said guardian as irregular, and asks that he may be ordered to correct and reform his accounts in fonformity with law and that report such information the said guardian be ordered to pay over to this complinant the sum of $213.40 the sum properly due to him as a minor child of ROBERT DARLING and ward of S. O. Barker as pension money drawer for him by the said guardian and being one third of $210 drawer for the period beginning 9-22-1869 to 12-22-1870 and the one half of $286.80 being the amount drawn from the said 22nd of December 1870 until the 19th of December 1872, the date at which this complainant arrived at the age of 16 years, less the proper expenses coming out of his share during that period, in accordance with the law and justice in this, or such proper amount as may be found due to him from his said guardian. HIRAM DARLING by Wm. Lawrance, his atty.

Did Hiram know Lydia Hedricks was his mother? Death Certificate: Mother Unknown. I was thinking of not including this above, but it helps & raises more questions too. I have not find Lydia after this.

VAN BIBBER TOMBSTONE

By Pat Gast ([email protected])

Here is a drawing of the William H. Vanbibber stone. I took some photos also. Lettering on stone:

left side: W. P. VanBebber Oct 23, 1868

Sept 30, 1911

Front face of stone: W. H. Van Bebber Jan 20, 1834

Sep 3, 1901

Sarah J. 1850 - 1915

Left side: Mark Van Bebber Feb 6, 1876

Aug 13, 1896

(Large carved Women of Woodcraft seal on front face of stone.)

Steve estimated that the stone is about 5' 5" tall and about 40-45" wide. It is made of rough hewn cement made to look like stone. On the left side of the large stone are two smaller ones with half moon shaped tops. On the tops are carved:

Far left: "WILLIAM" next to him "MOTHER"

Far right: "FATHER" next to him "MARK"

The Cemetery is the IOOF on Cherry Heights Road, The Dalles, Oregon 97058.

Sorry I'm not a better artist, but this will do until the photos come in.

SUCCESS STORY

By Gary R. Hawpe ([email protected]) and Susan Van Bevers ([email protected])

Susan,

Bruce LOGAN sent me a copy of your e-mail and asked me if I would assist you with your VB lineage. The below is your lineage back to Isaac VAN BIBBER who was an emigrant to the US.

Isaac VanBibber and Hester Op den Graeff
Jacob Isaacs VanBibber and Christina _____________
Isaac Jacobs VanBibber and Frances Schumacher
Peter VanBibber and Anna _____________
Isaac VanBibber and Sarah Davis
James VanBebber and Hannah Hoover
Isaac VanBebber and Hannah Long
George VanBeber and Mary Elizabeth Tinsley
George VanBever and Elizabeth Jones

George VAN BEBER who married Mary Elizabeth TINSLEY on December 10, 1844 in Knox Co., KY settled in Harlan and Bell Co., KY. For whatever reason, this family spelled the name VAN BEVER as early as 1870 and there are descendants today that live in Bell County spelling the name this way.

George VAN BEVER married Elizabeth JONES on February 26, 1881 in Claiborne Co., TN which is right across the state line from Bell County. About 1893, George and Elizabeth along with five small children headed West and settled in Collin Co., TX. Most records in Collin County indicate the family name was spelled VAN BEVERS.

I have a fair amount of information on the descendants of George and Elizabeth but I do not seem to have you listed. Years ago I was living in Arlington, TX and made a few trips over to Collin County researching the VAN BEVERS. I spent an afternoon with Johnnie Ray BRATCHER, the son of Liddie VB BRATCHER and he was very helpful. I also talked with numerous other members of the family in telephone conversations. I remember one day that Rassie BARKER, the son of Maggie VB BARKER, called me about the VB family. Johnnie had mentioned my name to him and he was interested in the family history.

Also, there was Wayne VAN BEVERS of Grand Prarie who I had a few conversations with. In fact, Wayne can be reached at ([email protected]). He is a subscriber to the VB newsletter. You probably know Wayne since his father was Paul Travis VB, a first cousin of yours if you are a granddaughter of George and Elizabeth. We also have Gretchen VB CARTER ([email protected]) who is a daughter of John Douglas VB. John was the son of Joseph "Hode" VAN BEVERS. John is another first
cousin of yours.

I'm really curious to know who your parents were. I have all the children of
George and Elizabeth and thought I had all the grandchildren. Guess I missed
one or two.

Below is the children of George VAN BEVER and Elizabeth JONES:

Generation No. 1

1. George9 VanBever (George8 VanBeber, Isaac7 VanBebber, James6, Isaac5
VanBibber, Peter4, Isaac Jacobs3, Jacob Isaacs2, Isaac1) was born 1857 in KY,
and died 1907 in Collin Co., TX. He married Elizabeth Jones February 26,
1881 in Claiborne Co., TN.

Children of George VanBever and Elizabeth Jones are:
2 i. Liddie10 VanBevers, born 1884 in Bell Co., KY; died 1972 in TX. She married John Bratcher November 17, 1901 in Collin Co., TX.
3 ii. Charley VanBevers, born 1886; died in AK. He married Etta Jones.
4 iii. Clara VanBevers, born 1888 in KY. She married Al J. Smith November 12, 1902.
5 iv. John Severe VanBevers, born January 18, 1890 in Pineville, Bell Co., KY; died September 24, 1962 in TX. He married Myrhl McDonald September
09, 1915.
6 v. Sarah VanBevers, born March 08, 1891 in KY; died in TX. She married Claude P. Skidmore.
7 vi. George Wesley VanBevers, born May 03, 1894 in Collin Co., TX; died December 23, 1977. He married Hattie Gertrude Reynolds January 06, 1940 in Collin Co., TX.
8 vii. William VanBevers, born March 18, 1896 in Fayburg, Collin Co., TX; died October 15, 1979 in TX.
9 viii. Joseph Hode VanBevers, born March 18, 1896 in Fayburg, Collin Co., TX; died 1974. He married Mary Emma Simms July 27, 1921 in Collin Co., TX.
10 ix. Addie Florence VanBevers, born March 08, 1898 in Collin Co., TX; died October 24, 1943.
11 x. Maggie F. VanBevers, born January 01, 1902 in Collin Co., TX; died June 02, 1961. She married Arley Barker February 12, 1922 in Collin Co., TX.
12 xi. Roosevelt VanBevers, born February 10, 1905. She married Mr. Downs.

I have additional information on the grandchildren and great grandchildren
if you are interested. Please get back with me as I would very much like to add your family into my files. If you have any questions on your VB ancestors just let me know. Thanks!

Bruce,

The following is what I just got from Susan who you asked me to help. Now I know why I never had her listed.

I leave this weekend for SLC and will be there for about nine days. Hope I don't run into any twisters!

Gary,

Thanks so much for your quick reply to my inquiry about the Van Bevers! I am the daughter of Louie B Van Bevers, Son of Charley and Etta. I never knew my father and only found him in 1990..It was sad for me to find out that he had died in 1980. Since then, I have had the opportunity to write to some of the Van Bevers in Texas and just August 1, I attended the lst ever Van Bevers reunion in Farmersville, Hosted by Rassie Barker and his daughter Trena. Sadly, John Ray Bratcher died the end of January, 1999. I caught up with my first cousin, Wayne on the internet several months ago, and we finally met in San Antonio this spring. Wayne sort of got the reunion thing going and it actually happened! My husband Marlyn Willardson and I stayed with Wayne and his wife Debra while we were in Texas. It was wonderful to meet and get acquainted with some Van Bevers! Wayne is also interested in tracing family history and I have forwarded your email to him. He will be so excited! My father, Louie B, was the youngest child of Charley son of Lizzie and George. Louie had 2 older brothers, Robert (Bob) and (Paul) Jack, who is Wayne's father. Louie B was married in Louisiana to Margaret ?...they had 2 children, Louisa and Joe Dickey. In 1943 Louie met my mother, Freda Jo Dickson, Geronimo, OK. They were married in late 1943, Louie went into the Marines the end of January, 1944 and I was born September 21, 1944. My maternal grandfather didn't like Louie, had him investigated, found out he had never divorced his first wife and insisted my 18 year old mother divorce him. She did. When I was about a year old she remarried my stepfather, Melvin B. Jones. I have one half-brother from that marriage, Bryan D. Jones. I was not adopted, but used Jones as my name until I married in 1963 to Douglas John Robertson. We have one son, Steven Douglas Robertson 6-22-63. Doug and I were divorced and I remarried in 1967 to Doyle M. Benson. We have two daughters, Monica Jean Benson 12-24-68 and Claudia Susanne Benson 3-8-76. I divorced again and remained a single mother until 1990 when I married Marlyn. I finally got it right. Marlyn and I are happy being grandparents! Steven Douglas Robertson has two daughters: Elena Kimbre' Susan Robertson, 15 and Amber Rose Robertson, 11. Monica Jean Benson has two sons" Tyler Neil Laursen,13 and Ian Garret Laursen(6)., Claudia has one son, Ryan Steven Benson 2 I have found out a lot about the Van Bevers just in the past year. I'd be happy to share any and all info with you. Rassie Barker sent me pictures this spring...a picture of my father. I had never seen what he looked like before. It has been an amazing experience. I'm sure Wayne will be in touch with you, too.

Thanks again,

Susan Van Bevers

VAN BIBBER ANCESTORY OF JEANNIE LANE

By Jeannie Lane ([email protected])

I just found your web site and am overwhelmed. I am a descendant to both Henry and Matthias.

Matthias and Hermania Henry

Hester and Phillip Reading

Hester and Andrew Peterson

Phillip Reading Jr. m. Mary (Peterson) Noxon

Catherinine Ann Reading m. William Haslett Crawford

Henry Van Bibber Crawford

Charles Crawford

Henry Van Bibber Crawford (still living @83)

William Haslett Crawford was the nephew of John Haslett, the revolutionary war hero from Delaware.

Catherine Ann Reading was the daughter of daughter of the Rev. Phillip Reading of St. Annes, Middletown, Delaware.

Henry Van Bibber served in the Civil War, I just recently claimed his war records. He was captured at Gettysburg. He was married to Margaret Price of the Price-Veasey line and Nowland (Darbey, Denis, Silvester and Thomas).

Our line consists almost entirely from the old names of Cecil County. I doubt any of this is new but have been unable to follow all the family lines on your website.

Please enroll me in your newsletter.

Thanks,

Jeannie Lane

A VAN BIBBER GRAVE

By Jim Van Bibber ([email protected])

Just a note on the Van Bibber's, I was down in southern Ohio last weekend and stopped at Asbury Cemetery in Hocking County and the caretaker showed me a grave for a Judson P. Van Bibber 1867-1951 and said he was the grandfather of his wife, Mercedes Prater, the caretakers name is Homer Prater.

We were looking for the grave marker of Louisa Blackburn Allen but did not
find it , suppose to be there we just did not find it yet.

QUERIES

From Susan Van Bevers ([email protected])

I'm looking for information on Elizabeth Jones who married George Van Bevers
in Claiborne County, Tenn. She was my great grandmother who later lived and died in Collin County Texas.

Also on another Jones - no relation My grandmother, Etta Jones, who married Elizabeth and George's son, Charley Van Bevers. They lived in Collin County and other parts of Texas, too. Etta died in 1917 in Austin, TX. at about the time my father (Louie B) was born.

The one clue I have for Elizabeth (Lizzie) is that I believe her father's name was J.S. Jones and that he was from Kentucky.
Thanks.

Can you prove that Milton Hensley is the son George W and Ruth (Van Bibber) Hensley?

I have a fellow worker that thinks the Milton Hensley, who Married Mary Polly Campbell, we are looking for had a father named Solomon Hensley. I think Milton's father was GW Hensley.

Thanks much
Susan

From Jim Staley ([email protected])

Thank you for the email and offer. You certainly have a wealth of information on the V-B line. I am not sure on the protocol I am supposed to use so believe I will briefly state my query and relate the small amount of info I know. I would appreciate it if you, or a subscriber, could tell me the relationship (however tenuous) of James D. Van Bibber b.
May 3 ,1828 d. July 30, 1909 to that of D Boone. James is buried in the cemetery NW of Willard MO (near Ash Grove). He was married to Caroline Staley b July 6, 1837 d. March 17, 19?? (cant even read my own handwriting) who is also buried there as are their two children, Alfred Hoke, b 5/17/1858, d 3/20/1950, and Laura Belle, b 1/23/1866, d 12/24/1956. Caroline was my grandfather's sister. I lived in Springfield with my grandfather and 4 of my aunts in 1943-44. My grandfather was born in 1846 and was in the Civil War. Neither Belle nor Hoke ever married and lived in a small farmhouse
between Springfield and Willard when I was there. My aunts would take groceries to them and see to their well being and I would go along. These 4 old ladies and I would cruise out in this 1928 Peerless Sedan. Because this is in the Boone Township and so near Ash Grove it seems most probable that James was more closely related to Nathan Boone's wife Olive. My aunts told me Hoke and Belle were related to the Boones. There was a small barn in back of their (the Van Bibbers) house and they said there was a saddle in it that belonged to D. Boone. He was supposed to have left it when he visited the family one time. There is no way that this could be proved but when Belle died and they disposed of the property my aunts took the saddle (my sister still has it). I don't have much more but this might be of some interest to someone. Thank you again. Jim

From Jeannie Lane ([email protected])

To begin with, I am very new to the internet and still experiencing difficulty even getting my email.

After WW2, my aunt, Aunt Alice Crawford MacGuire, became very interested in the family history. This was 55 years ago. She searched all the local archives for any information she could find. After years of hearing her stories and those of my father, it occurred to me no one else in the family had any interest in continuing her work and all would be lost upon their death. She is 82 and my father is 83. So here I am with this box of Xerox copies of an incredible family history representing years of research and little understanding.

My father and aunt were born in Gelena, Maryland. They still own Daily's Delight, a farm outside Gelena which came into the family in 1701 through Darby Nowland. Their parents were Charles Crawford and Alice Woodall. Alice was the daughter of Andrew Woodall and Alice Griffith. Andrew and Alice raised their 5 daughters in the Kitty Knight house in Georgetown. I assume you are familiar with that property. We know little of the Woodall line beyond Andrew, his father Andrew and his father Simon. Alice descends from the Thomasina and William Boulden line which would include, Richard Nash, David Rhydderach, David Jones, Adam Nuttall, Rev. Benjamin Griffith, John Sutton (Sutton House), Robert Faries and James Miles. I have all this documentation but again its in a pile.

My grandfather, Charles Crawford, is the descendant of the Van Bibbers. That line includes William Crawford, William Haslett (brother of John), Phillip Reading, Peter and William Rich, Darby Nowland, the Prices and the Veaseys.

What I do have is a copy of the complete will of Henry Peterson, son of Hester Van Bibber (Henry's daughter) and Andrew Peterson. Henry being a loyalist returned to England prior to the Revolutionary War and remained there until his death. His will leaves his properties in Delaware to those nieces and nephews in the states and of course defines some of the family relationships.

I haven't yet looked at your newsletter. I assume a wealth of information is included there. I am really very interested in Adam Peterson, as the Peterson line is important to the Van Bebbers. Has anyone come up with the origins of this family?

Thanks for now.

Jeannie Lane

From David J. Brown ([email protected])

An old Van Bibber genealogist correspondent of mine is trying to get some Revolutionary war documentation. His name is Jack Nebergall. I don't know if he has E-mail capability but have written to him to find out. Question. Are there any Nebergall people who are members of the Pioneers? I had 2 grt-grt aunts (sisters) who married Nebergalls, and have corresponded with some of them.

Just received a letter from Freida Arnold, and a part of it might be included. I sent her a copy of the Newsletter article about Moses Hill Van Bibber. This was part of her response.

"The Newsletter about Moses Hill Van Bibber was interesting. He was my
G. Grandfather and he did go west from W. Va. with two sons David and Ed and left his wife here with my Grandpa Joseph Franklin. He (Joseph Franklin)married and bought a farm in Clay Co. W. Va. He and his wife Nancy Arbelle Drake had five children, Elizabeth, Maggie, Hale, Loranze and Benjamin, my Dad....I haven't seen or found anything of Moses and his two sons. I'd love to know what happened to them and if I have any relatives that I don't know I have. I know now that G. Grandpa did marry
again and that he had some other children. Maybe I can find some. ......."

Freida's daughter recently held a small Van Bibber reunion in their area. 42 people attended, many of whom she has never seen before.

Freida doesn't have E-mail capability, but I would be happy to forward any information her unknown relatives might have.

I am searching for info regarding the Loyal VanBibber family. He was married to Sarah Elizabeth Robinson. They had a daughter named Susannah (b. 1 Sept. 1853; d.17 Oct 1838) who was married to Mordecai West. After Mordecai died, she married (22 Feb 1886--Vinton Cty. Ohio) my great, great grandfather John Trainer. Susannah had at least one brother named Oscar. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you so much!
