VAN BIBBER PIONEERS E-NEWSLETTER Nov. 2001

A free monthly electronic newsletter for the VAN BIBBER, VANBIBER,

VAN BEBBER, VANBEBER, VANBABER, VANBEVER,

and VANBEVERS families.

Vol. 5 No. 1 - November 2001

Thanksgiving has become America’s oldest tradition what was begun by our founding fathers. For some, it's a huge family gathering with large quantities of food. Others will enjoy a nice meal in a restaurant or celebrate by serving the less fortunate at a soup kitchen. Regardless of the way you spend your day, it is a day to offer thanks for our many blessings.

For those serving in the military and fighting our nation's war against terrorism, I want to say thanks for your sacrifices. To all the cousins and friends of our Van Bibber family, I want to say thanks for your dedication and commitment in helping preserve the family history.

I also want to wish one of our subscribers, Earl Taylor, a quick recovery from his bout with pneumonia. Earl has been in the hospital and I am now told he is doing much better. Hang in there Earl, we still have a lot of research to do on the family.

May you have a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

Your Editor,

Gary R. Hawpe

Gary,

Please add my name to the Van Bibber Newsletter Mailing List.

My background, which may be of use to you and some of the members, is that I have spent a number of years tracking down the factual history related to the Boone family, with some effort at including data on related and associated families. The information is not in the form of a data base, but is rather a collection that is still in files, books, and stored mentally, with the intent of sorting and assembling for the use of others in the future.

In the process of my past research, I have also sought out and located many of the Boone history related sites which still could be found from the territorial Louisiana and Missouri period (1797-1820). These sites include log cabins, water and oxen-driven mills, War of 1812 forts, burial places, Indian scrimmages, etc, plus the earliest American (Boone) trails west of the Mississippi River. One such located site is the early 1800's stone house of James Van Bibber (Olive's brother), which is

still used as a residence. My intent with the located sites is to assemble the data in a form to generate public interest, so that the public interest will lead the way to saving the sites for future generations. The groundwork in this direction is already in progress.

My background includes recognition nationally as a Daniel Boone and Boone family history authority. Recently I accepted the official role of Resident Boone Historian for the Daniel Boone/Nathan Boone Home near Defiance Missouri. This well-known open-to-the-public stone house has an adjoining Boonesfield Village of historic structures (which is in progress), and both have been obtained in the past several years by Lindenwood University of St. Charles, Missouri. My role will be to remove the myths and to inject "real" history as related to Daniel Boone, Nathan Boone, Olive Van Bibber, James Van Bibber (Lindenwood now owns the James Van Bibber stone house as part of their 1000 acre property in the Femme Osage valley), and so forth. Lindenwood University also owns the Flanders Callaway-Jemima Boone Log Home, which is to be reassembled in

the Boonesfield Village. Using my past research and perhaps some of your knowledge as well as inputs from the people associated with the Van Bibber Newsletter, I and we may be able, at some time in the future, to offer some form of real history related to the Van Bibber family at the Boone Home. With Daniel Boone's son Nathan marrying Olive Van Bibber, Daniel's son Jesse marrying Chloe Van Bibber and moving to the Missouri Territory in 1818, and Daniel's granddaughter marrying Isaac Van Bibber, Jr., who came to Upper Louisiana (Missouri) with the Boone family in 1799 and obtained a Spanish Land Grant, plus Olive's mother, and a number of Van Bibber cousins also moving to territorial Missouri during the pre-1820 period, there is a lot of background for including the Van Bibbers for family recognition purposes as part of a proposed future presentation.

Sincerely,

Ken Kamper, Historian

CORRECTIONS:

In September's issue of the family newsletter I included an article titled "The Boone Family Emigrants of 1846." This article was used from the website of "The End of the Oregon Trail." In this article it talks about how Alphonso Boone emigrated with his family out West to Oregon. Arlene Buschert, one of our subscribers and 2nd great granddaughter of Alphonso Boone, has informed me the picture they used with the article is not a picture of Alphonso, but a picture of his brother Albert Gallatin Boone. Arlene has been so kind to provide us with a picture of Alphonso. I am including both pictures so everyone will know the correct person.

THE JAMES MONROE YOUNGBLOOD BRANCH

James and Elizabeth (Sharp) Youngblood had only been married a short time when they joined his family in their move from DeKalb County, Missouri to Arkansas. They settled on Long Creek, Carroll County, where their first four children were born. About 1855, they returned to DeKalb Co., Mo., where Elizabeth's family still lived, possibly because of her father's ailing health, and their fifth child was born there, three months before her father died in 1856.

According to a story told years ago by a descendant of the Sharp family, James and Elizabeth had another child, who died in a tragic accident occurring when a turkey feather duster caught fire in the fireplace. Elizabeth had gone to the spring for water at the time and was so traumatized by the incident, that she "went crazy." (Quite likely, the diagnosis today would be called a nervous breakdown). There does appear to be some basis to the story, as the 1860 census reflects James and the children back in the home of his parents in Carroll Co., Ark., while Elizabeth is still in DeKalb Co., Mo. with her mother and a widowed sister, and noted on the census as being "insane from grief." It is believed that she died not long after this and probably buried in the Sharp Cemetery, although there is no marker there, today, to confirm this.

There is evidence that James made visits to DeKalb County, Mo. and possibly moved back there when he left Arkansas about 1862. As the certainty of civil war drew closer, the safety and welfare of his children became a grave concern, for the advanced ages of his parents would preclude their caring for them, should he fall victim to the Confederate conscriptors now active in the area.

When James returned to Arkansas after the war was over, he brought with him a second wife and another son, who had been born in Iowa. Family tradition recalls only that this wife was an Indian women, who spoke no English, and it appears that she, too, died after the birth of their daughter, about 1868.

James remarried a third time, to a woman with several children from a previous marriage. Two of them were still living at home, one of whom later married James' son. They settled in Carrollton Township of Boone County, Ark. where James bought forty acres of land on January 1st, 1880. (SE1/4, SE1/2 Sect.5, T19N, R21W). This was located south of Burlington in a community known as Lick Branch, near a stream of the same name. James and Nancy sold this land a couple of years later, but evidently remained in the area. No headstone has been found for James, but he is likely buried in the Auman Cemetery.

Dear Mr. Quintrell:

In regards to the copy of the Sadie Manbever/Nathaniel Hurles family group sheet that has the address of our Society, without seeing a copy, I can't tell you much. We sell family group forms for our patrons that have our society address on the, so anyone can get them. This particular family has been published in our Ross County, Ohio Families Volume III, p. 153, which is listed in the enclosed pamphlet.

As for the transition from Van Bibber to Manbevers, I know that this took place, as my wife's family is distantly connected by marriage to the Manbevers family and many others have come to the same conclusion. Don't ask me how or why it happened. The mispronounced, misspelled names for the family scattered from Scioto through Pike, Jackson, and Ross Counties are numerous.

Henry Manbevers is the son of John and Permelia (Holcomb) Manbevers. Here is what I have listed in my own brief records. In 1850 in Pike Co., you can find a 20 year old John listed as John Vanbevins in the family of his parents, John and May Vanbevers. A 15 year old Permelia Holcomb is listed 20 homes away. John Vanbever and Permelia Halcomb were married Jan. 31, 1851 in Pike County. In 1870, John and Permelia Manbevers are in Jackson Twp. of Pike County. In 1880, John and Permelia McBevers are in Franklin Twp. of Ross County. After that, it is Manbevers all the way.

Pike County marriage records include the following surnames: Vanbevere (the license says Manbever!), Manbevers, Vanbever, Vanbevers, and Vanbebber.

To research this family, which moved through a number of counties, you probably need the services of a paid researcher. Several local ones are listed in the attached sheet for your possible contact.

I hope this has been of some help.

Sincerely,

Robert Casari, Corresponding Secretary

UNIDENTIFIED VAN BIBBERS:

Can anyone identify Granville P. Van Bebber? Granville and his family shows up on the 1860 census of Pulaski County, Kentucky. On this census it states Granville was 30 years old and born in the state of Kentucky. Listed in the home is Mary (wife) -28, Harry - 6, Martha - 4, Lucinda - 2, and James 4/12 months. Mary and all the children were also born in Kentucky.

I have never been able to locate Granville as a 20 year old on the 1850 census. I cannot locate them in 1870. What happened to this family? What happened to the children?

If anyone has any information or leads on this family please let us know.

Can anyone identify Daniel Van Bibber? Daniel and his family were recorded on the 1850 census of Mississippi County, Arkansas. Daniel is listed as 25 years of age and born in Kentucky. His wife was Rhoda - 21 (born Ohio), and children Mary J. - 4, and James 2. Mary was born in Tennessee and James was born in Arkansas.

I do not know what happened to Daniel, but Rhoda was recorded on the 1860 census of Lauradale County, Tennessee with the two children, Mary and James. James, age 11, is listed as insane. What happened to Daniel, did he die? What happened to Rhoda and the two children after 1860.

--------------------

Can anyone identify Horatio Van Bibber? Horatio and his family were also recorded on the 1850 census of Mississippi County, Arkansas. Horatio is listed as 39 years old and born in Kentucky. Living in the home is Lucinda (wife) - 38, Sarah A. - 5, Mary J. - 2, and James - 3/12 months. Lucinda was born in Illinois while all the children were born in Arkansas. I have never been able to locate Horatio or any of his family on further census records.

Living next door to the family of Horatio Van Bibber on the 1850 census is Elizabeth Millirons. I have a marriage record for Elizabeth Van Bibber and David Millirons who were married on May 17, 1834 in Greenup County, Kentucky. Elizabeth is listed as 38 years old and born in Kentucky. David, her husband, is not listed and may very well have died by 1850. Her children are listed as follows: Mary J. - 16, Martha A. - 14, Amanda - 12, Van -10, Lucinda - 8, Olive - 6, and Nancy - 3. The four oldest children were all born in Kentucky. Olive was born in Ohio and Nancy was born in Arkansas. I have nothing further on Elizabeth and her children. I cannot find her or any of her children on the 1860 census.

It is a good possibility that Horatio, Daniel and Elizabeth were all siblings. All three were born in the state of Kentucky and living close to each other on the 1850 census of Mississippi County, Arkansas. The fact that Elizabeth was married in Greenup County, Kentucky indicates this is where all three were probably from. We all know there were numerous Van Bibber families in and around the Greenup County area. The question though, who were the parents of Horatio, Daniel and Elizabeth?

Thank you Gary: I am so glad you have introduced me to my family. I always thought I was related to the Boone's through Grandpa Hosman, but, I never knew how. FYI Charles William Hosman, my grandfather, helped build the Hoover Dam and the capital building in Missouri. He was a master craftsman, and built and designed his own coffin which he is buried in at the old Ash Grove cemetery between his wife Minnie Richardson Hosman and my mother Elnora Hosman Moore. You have helped answer a lot of questions. Thank you again and the newsletter comes through clear.

Hello Gary,

What a wonderful Newsletter and the pictures and patriotic theme topped it off. I am so thankful for the info you put in the newsletter so guess what -- I am going to ask for one more thing!!! (No promise there won't be more requests later). How about giving us a Christmas Present -- early of course -- of the list of subscribers and their relationship. It is so interesting to see the additions, however, I would like to know who the other 400+ were before I joined the group. Any chance you could do that?

Again, Thank You so much for your research and willingness to share with the rest of us. Also, for gathering the info from others willing to share.

Best regards,

Joan

----------

Joan,

When I took over as editor of the newsletter this last January there were already 299 subscribers. Of those I knew a fair amount of them, but there are a lot that I don't know how they descend from the Van Bibber family or what their relationship is. I think it would be a great ideal to go back and try to get everyone's connection to the family and post for others to view. This way everyone would know if there are other subscribers (cousins) who may be researching your same branches. This is going to be a big task on top of everything else I do. I am not sure how long it will take me, but I will start working on it.

Gary
