THE NAMEPLATE is once again hanging on the side of my grandfather's barn. Ever since we moved back to my family's farm in Indiana last summer, I've been wanting to have the sign repainted.

For the past decade or so, the lettering had just barely been visible. Unable to find anyone willing to repaint the sign because of the poor shape it was in, my husband, George, and I decided to tackle the job ourselves.

And now my grandfather's name --- A. Earl Van Bibber --- is readable again….just as it should be, just as it was for so many years.

At my mom's funeral 2 years ago, a dear family friend quietly told me that my mother's death marked the end of an era. She meant that with her passing, the end had also come to another small Midwestern family farm….one that proudly bore my grandfather's name on the barn. My brother, sister and I enjoyed growing up on the farm, but none of us were able to take over operating it.

My grandparents purchased the farm in 1919. My brother and sister have memories of them, but I was only a baby when they both passed away.

It's only in my imagination that my grandparents exist. Yet oddly, I have always felt they had significant place in my heart.

My mother rarely talked about her parents. I think it was because she missed them so much. I knew she loved her mother by her soft, gentle smile whenever I'd ask some silly question about my grandmother. And whenever a neighbor or old friend would mention my grandfather's name, Mother's eyes danced, and her voice became enthusiastic.

From stories I've heard, my grandfather was generally well liked because of his sense of humor and gift of gab. But at the same time, he was a bit opinionated and outspoken.

Perhaps that's a trait I inherited from my grandfather. Over the years, I've learned the hard way that I must bite my tongue, or at least express my opinions in a more tactful manner.

When Mother passed away, we had to decide what to do with the farm. It's a decision with which countless other families have had to struggle. There are sleepless nights, worrying and praying about whether or not to sell it.

Our farm had been in the family for over 80 years, and selling it seemed almost disloyal --- and so final. Once it was sold, that part of our family heritage would be gone.

Nevertheless, we decided to sell the land, and somehow we got through the auction on that cold January day in 2001. We were greatly relieved when a neighboring farmer bought it, rather than a stranger from far away.

As for the farmhouse and outbuildings, my brother and sister didn't really want to own them, but they didn't want to sell the farmstead to anyone outside the family either.

At the time we were living in Tennessee, where George taught at a college. While I had lived the farmhouse since I was a little girl, I didn't know if my husband could find a teaching position in the area.

However, with my brother's and sister's blessings, George and I decided to keep the farmstead and rent out the house. We figured we could always sell it later if necessary.

After the farm sale, I made the 7-hour drive back to Tennessee with mixed feelings --- a person does a lot of thinking all alone in a car after such an event. I kept telling myself that it was ridiculous to be so emotionally attached to a few acres of Indiana dirt, and that my mother and grandparents would have understood.

Still, there was a deep sense of regret and loss….like a way of life had died. Yes, this was indeed the end of an era.

I also wondered during that long drive back to Tennessee what on earth had I done by keeping an old house we'd probably never get to live in. I realized that George must really love me for allowing me to do so.

During my absence, George had also been doing a lot of thinking about our future, and when I arrived home, he suggested we seriously consider moving to the farm. Over the next few months, we prayed for God's will, and soon George was offered a wonderful teaching opportunity within driving distance of it.

So now we're here on our little farm. These few acres may never be quite as lovely as when my grandparents lived here nearly 40 years ago.

Some features have been altered, and some are gone forever. But each little improvement we make breathes new life into this old place, and each task is done with loving hands.

We've planted some seedling trees and names them after loved ones. Grandpa's oak is directly in front of the barn, of course. Next spring, we'll plant fruit trees in honor of our three children, Allen, Abigayle and Jacob.

But it is the end of an era. Neither we nor our children will be able to make this a working farm again. If one of them chooses to keep this place, it will be because they take pleasure in living out here.

On the other hand, maybe it isn't the absolute end of an era. Why did my heart call me to raise our family on this little farm? Maybe the era is in a small way continuing with us, and one of our children will someday wish to live here, too.

All around me, I'm reminded of the love and hard work that was invested into my heritage, and I learn from it. I see it in little surprises, like the gunnysacks my husband found in the hog barn labeled with my grandfather's and great-grandfather's names. I'm reminded of that heritage as I see farmers working late into the night in the fields around me.

Our decision to move here was a lifestyle choice. Leaving our home in Tennessee meant saying goodbye to friends and giving up some of the conveniences of living in a larger town.

On the other hand, moving to the farm has presented me with glorious sunsets out my kitchen window…sometimes so spectacular that I stop what I'm doing to run outside to take in the whole scene.

Living here means hearing the songbirds and watching geese fly overhead in "V" formation. It's watching neighbors plant their fields and hollering at our dogs to stop chasing the tractors.

It means summer picnics on a blanket under a tree with the kids and watching them run, climb and imagine here on this farm…just as I did when I was a carefree little girl.

Maybe placing my grandfather's name back up on the barn was an attempt to keep an era alive. I know things will never be the same, or perhaps as they should have been. But life is good, sweet and peaceful.

It's fitting Earl Van Bibber's name is on our barn representing a by-gone era. After all, we have much to learn from the past and much to live for tomorrow.

Daniel Van Bibber was born February 26^th, 1913 at Ta’Tla Mun. He was the second son and fourth child of Eliza and Ira Van Bibber.

Dan lived his early years at Ta’Tla Mun, Sheep Mountain in the McArthur Mountains and Mica Creek. The family traveled to where there was good hunting or fishing. In 1914, Dan’s father built the first home at Mica Creek that would become the homestead for the large Van Bibber family. Dan learned, like all his brothers and sisters, how to live off the land from a very young age. While living at Ta'Tla Mun, he and his older brother Abe, helped their father with the fishing, and they trapped mink and weasels close by the cabin. Dan was five and Abe a year older.

Dan attended boarding school in Dawson City for several years. He enjoyed his school years and was glad that Bishop Stringer talked his dad into sending the kids to school. They traveled down to Dawson on the river. Sometimes, the Van Bibber children would raft down from Pelly to Dawson. Once, there, they would sell the wood for their spending money. Ira’s logic was that there was no point in paying the steamboat fare, when the river was going that way. When the mail came, the Van Bibber children would gather all together and May would read the letters from home. Dan met other children from around the north at school and became familiar with the old timers of Dawson. A favorite past time for young Daniel was to listen to the stories of the old timers sitting in front of the Yukon hotel.

At 15 years old, Dan left school and began trapping. He trapped alone that first winter, with his brother Abe trapping another line. He looked up to his brother who he said, handled the bush life like an old timer.

In Dan’s trapping career, he covered a big part of the Yukon on foot or dogsled or by boat. He trapped and hunted throughout the Selkirk traditional territory as well the traditional territories of the Vuntut Gwichen, Tr’ondek Hwechin, and Kaska. All the brothers trapped the McArthur area and then Dan spent a number of years up in the Porcupine and Nation River area. He trapped alone or with his brothers. Archie and Alex went in the first year, then Archie, Dan and JJ. One year, Archie and Dan killed a big grizzly, whose head was nearly as wide as Dan’s shoulders. Pat and George also trapped with Dan the Nation River area. During those years in the bush, Dan had many adventures and had many close calls. Breaking trail ahead of the dogs, coming through mountain passes with only the wind in their faces to guide the way, making camp when it was 60 below, rafting down swollen rivers in the spring. There are many here today, that can tell a story or two about Dan’s adventures.

Dan was dedicated to his family. And he was a friend to be counted on. He worked hard to make sure his parents and younger siblings were taken care of. He first provided for them, before leaving to join the army.

Dan joined the army in 1944 and was drafted overseas. His brothers Archie and Alex also joined the army. He went to Germany, Belgium and Holland. He signed up for the South Pacific and although he did not get drafted to there, he was on the first draft back from overseas. He landed in New York harbor and watched from the ship as New Yorkers celebrated the return of the soldiers.

After the war, Dan went back to trapping for a number of years before working for wages. Him, JJ, Pat and George tried their hand at running a sawmill but the price of wood was not so good. They all left to work on the highways. They first worked for Keno Hill until the government took over the roads. Dan worked the highways from early 1950’s, until he retired at age 65. He worked as foreman at Stewart Crossing than at Ross River and Tuchitua.

Dan married Eileen MacDonald from Watson Lake and they had two sons, Abe and Bobby. Dan and his family lived in the Watson Lake and Ross River area for many years. They spent much of their spare time in the bush. Eileen shared Dan’s love of the bush. They had a cabin at 89 Mile, hunting and trapping around Francis Lake and the Tungsten Range. In recent years, Abe’s twin girls Danielle and Ta`hyah gave Dan his biggest pleasure. Any mention of the girls and Dan would just light right up. The girls in turn loved their grandpa and they had great fun together.

After Dan retired, he returned home to Mica Creek. He worked for Selkirk First Nation on economic development, housing maintenance and on land claim negotiation. He served on many boards and committees including as a founding member of Dena Naye Ventures and Yukon Indian Development Corporation. Dan was one of the signatories of the Selkirk First Nation Final Agreement.

Dan always lived by the old laws of respect and responsibility. He always set a good example. Dan leaves behind his boys, Abe and Bobby, his granddaughters, Danielle and Ta`hyah. The Van Bibber family: May, Archie, Alex and Sue, JJ and Clara, Pat and Ada, Kathleen and Bob, Lucy, Linch and Bob and sister-in-law Maria. The MacDonald family: Eileen, Lucy and Jimmy, Linda, Janet, John, Peter, Anne Marie and Eddie. And many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews. And so very many friends.

James W. Reynolds, son of H. W. Reynolds and Helen Reynolds, of this city, and brother of Tom W. Reynolds, clerk at Hotel Ruffner, John P. Reynolds, engineer on the K & M railway, and Mrs. William Lohmeyer, died at his home at Malden at 11 o'clock yesterday after a short illness with typhoid fever. Mr. Reynolds' age was 42 years, and for the past 19 years he has been employed as storekeeper by the Campbell's Creek Coal company.

He leaves a wife, who was the daughter of E. Rooke, of Malden, one son, Frederick, aged 16 years, and a daughter Julia aged 14. At the time of his death he was worshipful master of Salina Lodge, No. 27, A. F. & A. M. under the auspices of which the burial will be conducted. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias, Red Men and Odd Fellows. The funeral services will take place at the Presbyterian church at Malden at 11 o'clock tomorrow morning and will be conducted by the pastor, Rev. F. L. McCue. Arrangements have been made for a steamer to leave the wharf in this city at 9:30 o'clock Sunday morning to take all who desire to attend the funeral. After the services at the church the body will be conveyed to this city on the steamer and interred in Spring Hill Cemetery.

The deceased has many friends in this city and was highly respected by all who knew him. For many years he has been a consistent member of the Presbyterian church at Malden and took great interest in all work of the church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Mary Jenny T. Satterfield and Clara M. Tucker; and four brothers: Billy Boy, Flenor, Harold and Ralph Tucker. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Jeanette Van Bever Tucker; two daughters: Lauren T. Wilkins and husband, Larry; and Cindy T. Robinson and husband, Doug, all of Henderson; a son, J. Michael Tucker, Cary, N.C.; two sisters: Colleen T. Barton, Homosassa Springs, Fla.; and Laura T. Jennings, Louisville; five grandchildren: Brad V. Hedrick, Jennie L. Robinson, Sarah M. Robinson and Kellie M. Robinson, all of Henderson; and Chad E. Wilkins, Raleigh, N.C.; a special friend, Sonny Brandon, Henderson.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Frank Sossamon officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. All other times, they will be at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Television Ministries, P.O. Box 75, Henderson, N.C. 27536. Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
