Vol. 6 No. 10 - August 2003

Is it hot enough for you? If not, here is another hot issue of the Van Bibber Pioneers newsletter. Just think, Labor Day weekend is here and summer is almost over. Before you know it Autumn will be upon us with all the changes it brings.

A good variety of articles, covering various branches of the family, are included in this issue of the family newsletter. For those who participated to make this newsletter successful, my thanks goes out to you once again. The year is quickly coming to a close. If your intentions were to submit something this year, you have four issues left. I still haven't made the decision about continuing on as the editor once December's issue is published. Even though I enjoy publishing the newsletter, I put a lot of my projects and research on the back burner to bring this publication to you each month. We will see, but in the mean time keep forwarding the articles and bits of family information to me. Sharing is contagious.

Your Editor,

Gary R. Hawpe

In last month's newsletter it included the obituary of Marjorie Van Bibber Pursley. In her lineage chart I left out a generation which was her great grandparents, Noah Bryson Van Bibber and Elizabeth Ann Carter. This error was noted by one of our subscribers, Earl Taylor -- [email protected] whose late wife was a first cousin of Marjorie's.

KNOXVILLE MAN TAKES OWN LIFE

--------------------
Lifeless Body Of Henry Kincaid, 72
Years Old, Found
Near Home
----------

About 3:15 o'clock Saturday afternoon the lifeless body of John Henry Kincaid, 72, of the Knoxville community, was found hanging on a tree approximately half a mile from his home on an adjoining farm. He had left home horseback about 10 o'clock in the morning and told his wife he would return about 11 o'clock.

When he failed to return home, Mrs. Kincaid started looking for him and called Knoxville about noon. Searching parties started out and the four men who found him were John D. Patton, George Alexander, J.O. Swafford and Warren Martin.

Dr. John F. Baber, Ray county coroner, was called. He declared it to be a suicide and no coroner's inquest was necessary. Neighbors said Mr. Kincaid had been in poor health for some time.

He was a lifetime resident of the Knoxville community, born January 19, 1877, on the old Kincaid farm east of Knoxville. He was one of seven children of Andrew Jackson Kincaid of Tennessee and Mary Ann (Renfro) Kincaid of Missouri. He was a member of the Knoxville Methodist church and a farmer.

He was married December 23, 1900 to Miss Cora Belle Campbell of Ray county who survives.

Basley of Excelsior Springs, Mrs. Charles Wollard of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Alney Russell of Carlsbad, New Mexico, Mrs. E. H. VanBebber of Knoxville and Mrs. I. I. McCulley of Kansas City, Kansas; and one sister, Miss Sarah E. Kincaid of Tulsa, Okla., eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the Knoxville church. The Elder Leon Clevenger of Excelsior Springs officiated. Burial was in Sunny Slope cemetery in Richmond.

SIDNEY J. DOGGETT

Among the mechanics of Nez Perces county there is none with more skill in his line, enterprise in business, good practical judgment and ability, than the subject of this brief article. Mr. Doggett now handles the first shop in size and business on the reservation, doing a general blacksmith business with all of its branches and operating a half dozen men.Sidney J. Doggett was born in Siskiyou county, California, on April 29, 1867, being the son of William C. and Jane P. (Redman) Doggett. The father was born in St. Louis county, Missouri, on March 14, 1825, and followed mining until he came to Sprague, Washington, where he farms. The mother was born in St. Louis county, Missouri, on January 10, 1838. The family came to Washington when Sidney was seven months old, where he was reared and educated. When eighteen he rode the range in the Palouse and in 1890, he rented land near Pullman and farmed. It was 1896 that he came to the reservation and bought the relinquishment of a settler and followed farming until he proved up on the place. During the times between the rush of farm work he gave his attention to the blacksmith's art and he became very proficient in it. In the fall of 1901, he erected a substantial building in Nezperce and opened a shop, and as said above, he is handling the largest blacksmith business in the reservation country. Mr. Doggett has the following brothers and sisters: John, a farmer at Chesley; Jefferson D., a farmer near Walla Walla; Robert S., a farmer at Johnson, Washington; Francis E., a farmer in California; Isaac H. and Frederick T., farmers at Sprague, Washington; Sierra Nevada, wife of T.A.. Brown, a farmer at Pullman. Mr. Doggett is a member of the I.O.O.F. and the Rebekahs in Nezperce; also of the W.W., and the M.W.A. and the Women of Woodcraft, all in Nezperce. He is a Democrat but is never zealous of personal preferment.

On February 23, 1891, Mr. Doggett married Miss Edna A., daughter of Alsa and Sarah (VanBibber) Woodward. Mrs. Doggett was born in Missouri on October 5, 1874; she has the following brothers and sisters: William D., a farmer at Johnson, Washington; Caroline, in Missouri; Martha, wife of John Brown, a saw mill man at Kendrick; Cinderella, wife of Robert L. Doggett; Alice, wife of Wm. Anderson, in Washington. Six children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Doggett, - Lulu M., Herbert E., Etta, William A., George, and Esther. Mr. Doggett is enjoying the meed of honest industry, and wisdom in the competence that he possesses and the prosperous business that he is handling, while also the confidence and good will of all are his unstinted measure.

JAMES "SANTIAGO" VAN BIBBER

This has been such a fun month for me learning about what appears to be my rich heritage and trying to piece together the steps that brought my probable 3rd great grandfather, James Claiborne "Santiago" Van Bibber, to Mexico.

Circumstantial evidence would suggest that James C. might have traveled back and forth between Texas and Mexico at will because he can be found in the 1850 census very near the border of Mexico. The town that his son Ricardo "Richard" Van Bibber settled in is Muzquiz, State of Coahuila, Mexico. I have heard that his family lived in this area for a long time and were well known there. Muzquiz, Coahuila which is about 100 miles southwest of the Rio Grande River, is on the route that was taken from south Texas to the California gold rush.

By 1854, James C. chose to give legal authority to John Van Bibber, a second cousin, to collect any monies due to him in Texas. At this time James was still living in Webb County, Texas. The big question is, why did he give this authority to John? I strongly believe James had his sights on living in Mexico. While there he fell in love with Anestaria Flores and happily raised our loving family.

I have two bills of receipts from 1910 that show my great grandfather, Ricardo "Richard" Van Bibber, bought a large machine, a boiler, an iron wagon, 12 horses and all of the gear that went with it for $550.00, from a store on the outskirts of Muzquiz. Since Muzquiz is a mining town I can only guess why he might have needed these items. I also have another receipt where Santiago Van Bibber bought a wagon in 1913. This is most likely my grandfather Santiago "James" Van Bibber who was born in 1888.

When I spoke to my Van Bibber uncles about this they were both very happy to learn about James C. and gave me some good clues for pieces to the puzzle. They both said my dad, Louis E. Van Bibber, would have loved to learn how we were related to the other Van Bibber families. My dad at one time tried to find out, but was unsuccessful.

Even though my grandfather, Santiago "James" and my Great Grandfather Ricardo "Richard" both were born and raised in Mexico, they both spoke English very fluently.

As of right now we have no absolute proof that James C. Van Bibber was "Santiago," but I believe that they are one of the same.

Let the facts speak for themselves:

  1. "Santiago Van Bibber" is American born.
  2. "Santiago" is the Mexican/Spanish version for the name James.
  3. Family tradition has it that "Santiago" served in the US Army during the Mexican War. James C. Van Bibber, the son of Isaac Van Bebber and Mary Martin also served in the US Army during this time frame.
  4. James C. Van Bibber is living along the Mexican border in the 1850's.
  5. James C. Van Bibber is alive in 1859 when his father wrote his will.
  6. James C. Van Bibber does not show up on the United States 1860 census.
  7. James C. Van Bibber would be old enough (43 years) to father a child when Ricardo Van Bibber was born in 1861.

If James C. is not Santiago Van Bibber, then what happened to him? If Santiago is not James C., then who is he?

KNOXVILLE, RAY COUNTY, MISSOURI

Knoxville was laid out in 1837 by John Grimes from Tennessee. It was established as Buncombe

on January 24, 1838. The name was changed to Knoxville (for Knoxville, TN) on October 26, 1838. It was the crossroads of the stagecoach lines from Carrollton to Plattsburg and from Lexington to Gallatin.

An ox-wagon train of the Yoakums, Grimes, McGlothin, Thomas, Adams, Vanbebber and Kincaid families came through the Cumberland Gap to St. Louis and on to Ray County, MO.

There were 38 of them who spent the winter west of the old Alfred Kincaid place, now the Clay Hamilton place. These early settlers chose this place because of the abundance of water, timber and wild game.

The first land grants for Knoxville went to Able Lee, James M. Kincaid, Camel Millstead, Alfred Kincaid, Moses Yoakum, James Hatfield and Peter Vanbebber during the years 1830-1837.

EMORY ROWLAND

Emory Rowland, 97, of McCall went peacefully to be with the Lord on Saturday April 12, 2003 at the Sunbridge Care Center following a relatively short illness. Services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday April 18, 2003 at the McCall Christian Fellowship with Rev. Norman Rutzen officiating. Burial will follow in the Meadows Valley Cemetery, New Meadows, Idaho under the direction of the Heikkila Funeral Chapel, McCall.

Emory was born March 12, 1906 to Arthur Rowland and Minnie Davis Rowland at his grandparents homestead near McCall, Idaho on the Davis homestead of his mothers parents, who came to Valley County in the late 1800's. We believe he was the oldest living first generation person born in McCall. He remembered the first car, and the inception and arrival of the railroad, that passed through the heart of his fathers homestead which he later subdivided. It became one of the first land developments in Valley County. He remembered the excitement of electricity coming to McCall. He was very musical and played the drums in a dance band and entertained the family with banjo, bones and spoons. He loved dancing on the floating dance pavilion pulled by Captain Dodges Steamboat on Payette Lake. The employees of the nursing home still enjoyed it when he sang love songs to his wife Vera after dinner. He attended the very first grade at the first school in McCall, which was built by his father in 1910 and is now a museum at Roseberry, Idaho near Donnelly.

His father, Arthur, was the head of the school board and mayor at the time, hired his teacher Mrs. Luzader who lived in McCall until her death. He was an avid hunter from the time he was a small boy, always looking forward to hunting season and proudly bringing home deer and elk for the families winter meat supply. Huckleberries were picked where Ponderosa State Park now stands. He was a lead man for the CCC's and helped build the road from Riggins to French Creek on the Salmon River as well as the French Creek grade. He logged and worked for Browns Tie and Lumber Co. as a retailer.

In 1940, he moved the family to Portland, Oregon, where he was the head lead man for Kaiser Shipyard with the responsibility of wiring of Liberty ships until the war was over. He constantly talked about, when he could come home to his beloved McCall. Upon his return he spent one winter trapping. Another of his childhood joys was setting up to 50 miles of trap lines with his brothers and uncles from McCall to Salmon River. He then established Rowland Electric and continued his occupation as an electrical contractor until his retirement.

He will be remembered as a tower of strength with the heart of an angel. He was a wonderful example as a father, grandfather and a friend to all that knew him. He had a zest for life and a kind nature that was always apparent when you looked into his eyes. His love was unconditional and unfaltering. Emory and his wife Vera were devout Christian and along with other family members founded and built the church which is now the McCall Christian Fellowship, a wonderful legacy along with all the other special gifts that he bestowed on all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife Vera Rowland and children, Marion Rowland of McCall, Dewey Rowland of Boise, Shirley Wilkerson and husband Dick of Boise, Warren Rowland and wife Pat of McCall, eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He will be in our hearts and missed forever.

Memorials may be made to the Valley County Museum, P.O. Box 441, Donnelly, Idaho, or a favorite charity.

VERA MARYNE ROWLAND

Vera Maryne Rowland, 89, of McCall, was called home by the Lord on Thursday, July 24, 2003, at Sunbridge Care Center. She went quietly to sleep with family by her side. Services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, at the McCall Christian Fellowship, with the Rev. Norman Rutzen and the Rev. Jeff Ecklund officiating. Burial will follow at Meadows Valley Cemetery, under the direction of Heikkila Funeral Chapel, McCall.

Vera was born July 23, 1914, in Meadows, Idaho, to Marvin A. Yoakum and Elsie Jones Yoakum. Much of her youth was spent swimming at the family-owned Yoakum Hot Springs (now Zim's) which was then a resort that included a hotel dance hall and rental cabins. Her grandfather was a circuit judge and one of the original settlers in the Meadows Valley. She graduated from Meadows High School where she loved to play basketball and was a champion swimmer. She was proud of the fact that at the time, she was one of the few that swam across the Payette Lake from shore to shore.

She married Emory Rowland on Sept. 20, 1933, in McCall. They lived an exemplary life together for almost 70 years. She and her late husband Emory were loved more than words can express by all that knew them and both returned that love 10-fold. Everyone loved seeing them still holding hands and would comment on the love that was so evident to anyone who saw them together. Emory died in April of this year.

Vera worked at McCall Memorial Hospital and also at the nursing home that became her last home. Prior to her time as a resident at Sunbridge, she spent many hours visiting and encouraging not only residents but staff as well. Her life was dedicated to her church and family. She was a matriarchal leader of faith to her family both immediate and extended. She was an amazing student of the Bible and would quote scriptures verbatim from the King James Bible that were applicable to any need or situation. She was a loving and caring confidant to young and old alike and would quietly encourage with confidential understanding and unconditional love. She cherished the many years that she spent teaching her primary Sunday school class, knowing that the smallest children needed to learn about God's love early in life. She was a wonderful cook and an incredible wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Though she could hardly speak in her final days, she always had a hug for everyone. Her eyes told a beautiful story of a life lived with total honesty and caring. We were blessed to have had her in our lives and we will miss her more than words can say. She will be in our hearts and thoughts forever.

She is survived by a sister, Zola Huntley of Portland, Ore.; and a brother, LeRoy (Pete) Yoakum of Missoula, Mont.; and children, Dewey Rowland of Boise, Shirley Wilkerson and husband, Dick of Boise, Warren Rowland and wife, Pat of McCall, and stepson, Marion Rowland of McCall; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Don Yoakum of New Meadows.

Memorials may be made to McCall Memorial Hospital, 1000 State St., McCall; or a favorite charity. A viewing will be held today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Heikkila Funeral Chapel.

QUERIES:

I am still looking for any information on "Sally" (Warner) Van Bebber, the wife of Robert Van Bebber. Robert was born about September of 1798 in Claiborne Co., TN. He and his wife Sally were in the 1830 White County, TN. census, where William and Margaret (Howard) Warner resided at that time. Margaret was the daughter of Robert and Nancy (Van Bibber) Howard, who also resided in White Co., TN. Therefore, making Robert the nephew of Nancy. I think there may be a connection between Sally Warner and William Warner. Does anyone have any information on these Warner's?

Does anyone know some good resources to research given names from the past. The names that have me curious are: Flavious, Augustus, Littleberry, and Greenberry. I suspect the last two are surnames. I suspect popularity of Latin names corresponds the Western world's interest in things Roman and Greek at that time.

While running the George Washington line I ran across a couple of familiar names that we have in the Van Bibber archives, Chew and Crews. Chew connects with Goodrich Lightfoot and two Van Bibber families. Also Crews which connects with Merediths which connect with Bonds which connect with Van Bibbers. Washington's line appears to have been traced back in one direction to Scandinavian rulers and in another thru the Western European rulers past Charlemagne to a Gallo-Roman Senator named Flavious Syagrious, who died after 350. I always keep the salt shaker handy while doing web research. Anything that far back I would have to see some proof. I am grateful for all those who work so hard and share their work. I have hit a brick wall on Hannah Hoover's birth place and her parents. Census records say she was born in North Carolina but I do not believe this to be true. Hannah had her first child ca 1793. There are many Hoovers in Tax lists in Russell and Lee counties VA. An informant tells me that James and Hannah were married ca 1791 in Russell Co., VA. In Campbell Co., TN deed Book E, Oct. 1821, James and Hannah are mentioned along with her brothers and sisters, so her father must have settled in that county.

The boundaries of VA and NC changed so frequently that I believe Hannah didn't know exactly where she was born.

I have been working on this for years with no positive results. Can anyone help me? I promise to answer all e-mails know matter how little the information is. Thank you.
