A free monthly electronic newsletter for the VAN BIBBER,

Vol. 6 No. 12 - October 2003
Another month, another Halloween and another issue of the Van Bibber Pioneers newsletter. This now completes six years of our family publication. Who would have ever thought we would have reached the point that we have when Bruce Logan published the first newsletter back in
November 1996 with 22 charter members. Seven years later (we did not have the newsletter for the entire year of 2000) we now have over 600 individuals subscribed to the newsletter and a wealth of information shared each month on various branches of the family. Where will we be in another six years? It was a year ago this month (October 26, 2002) that we lost our true friend and family researcher Mr. Earl Quintrell. It doesn't seem like he has been gone for a year as his memories are still fresh in my mind. I don't believe a day has passed where I haven't thought about Earl. We shared so much family information over our 14 years of friendship that it is hard to forget. Heck, every time I open up one of my binders there is information he has shared or typed for me with his initials at the bottom of the page. I know he is up there in heaven looking down on us with all the information on the family that we so much desire. Even though I know it will never happen, at times when I stroll to the mailbox I am wishing how nice it would be to receive another letter from Earl with all those answers. We miss you Earl, and for those of us who you touched and shared your friendship over the years, you will never be forgotten.
October was a good month for inputs for the newsletter. Once again, keep up the good work on your monthly submissions. We look forward to your continuous support.
Happy Halloween to all !!
Your Editor,
Gary R. Hawpe

ELDERLY WOMAN FOUND DEAD AFTER FIRE
An 85-year old woman died in her smoke-filled home at 353 South Fourth Tuesday morning.
Mrs. Talitha Elinore Cauvel was found dead in the living room of her home after fire caused considerable damage to the two-story frame structure.
Coroner Leonard DeWitt said death was either caused by suffocation or a heart attack. Mrs. Cauvel was not burned.
Fireman battle the flames in bitter cold and one truck was called to another location about the same time.
Leonard Adams, fire chief, said a heavy fire was apparently going in the trash burner in the kitchen. The fire started when the pipe from the trash burner became overheated. Flames ran between the partitions into the studding and directly up to the attic.
He said damage to the house was extensive.
Neighbors said Mrs. Cauvel lived alone in the house. A neighbor had talked to her about 8 a.m. Chief Adams said it was impossible to tell whether she was trying to escape from the house or whether she suffered a heart attack during the fire.
A neighbor, Mrs. Phil Dalene, prepared coffee and cookies for the fireman after the blaze was extinguished.
FIRE VICTIM PROMINENT IN LOCAL CIRCLES
Mrs. Talitha Elinore Cauvel, 85, was the victim of a Tuesday morning fire at her home, 353 S. Fourth.

She married the late John C. Cauvel Oct. 2, 1919.
She was the mother of Mrs. Robert (Maybelle) Kaser, Mrs. Charles (Martha) McCune, and Dave Moffett, all of Walla Walla; Mrs. J.B. (Lelia) Wood and Mrs. C.O. (Olive) Broughton, Portland, and Mrs. Karl (Christina) Ponath, San Francisco. Also surviving are three grandchildren.
Note: Talitha Elinore Pierce's first husband was Edward L. Moffett who she married on September 09, 1888 in Linn County, Missouri. The above children were from her first marriage. (GRH)

GRANDPA STORIES
Death. By definition it is supposed to be a somber event, I would have agreed with that statement a year ago. However, now I see it differently. I have come to realize the beauty in passing away. I watched my grandmother 12 short months ago take her last breath. Sobbing at her funeral, I realized I no longer had any hope of getting to know this woman, my very own grandmother. She had disconnected herself from all emotion; unknowingly she forfeited our relationship for "protection" from loneliness. I had regret at the loss of a woman, I’d known all my life, yet never really known at all.
However, as my grandfather, her husband lies in a coma (resulting from a stroke), and has doctors not expecting him to live out the rest of the month, I almost feel relief. Death is a triumph over pain, a release from all worries, all cares. My grandpa, who we lovingly call "Major", due to his service in the military, won’t have to keep fighting a losing battle. He will finally be able to rest, and for that I am thankful. Even though I may not understand why he is the way he is, or why he is leaving me, at least I have spent the last year discovering the man he has become.
I along with my family and friends have all laughed at his loss of reality over the past year, though he would be humiliated if he could have seen himself. A grown man, the only graduate of a military academy from his small-town community, coming to dinner wearing a khaki-colored wool sweater as pants. A scrawny leg jetting out of the arm and the other leg casually floating through the neck hole made for an interesting sight. Major never understood why he was cold or the fact he had developed a tail (the other arm).
He would laugh at the comedy of himself, a high-school counselor, falling asleep and repeatedly spilling coffee all over his lap and the kitchen table. Imagine a full mug of hot coffee and a pure white sweater, not to mention the light khaki-Dockers and freshly polished kitchen table.
Witnessing the Manager of the Officers Club, etiquette-obsessed, throwing a used Kleenex across the middle of a crowded doctor’s office.
The Professor of Military Science calling the name of his deceased wife in the middle of the night, not realizing she can’t answer his desperate cry.
A decorated soldier not recognizing his own family members, mistakenly hitting on his grand-daughter instead of his wife, who resemble each other at a comparative ages.
His deteriorating strength, as a running back of the district champ high school football team couldn’t even make it across the hallway to his bathroom.
Watching the nourishment-filled I-V drip into his quivering body, I faced the facts. My major is leaving me. He is no longer the young, handsome soldier who came home from WWII with a purple heart, and bronze star displayed on his broad shoulders. Major’s the epitome of a quote by an old general "An old soldier never dies. He just fades away."
The sadness is overwhelming, as his eyes don’t have the strength to follow the movement of my hand slowly waving in front of his face. It is heart breaking to notice the faint squeeze of his frail hand over my class ring, and realizing he’s searching for clues as to whom this strange form is standing in front of him. Yet, amazingly there is grace, even victory in his death. He’s lived a full life, been in two wars (WWII, and Korea), been shot, raised a son, watched his two grandchildren grow up. This man of honor and duty stuck by his exasperating wife for 61 years, and lost her, the only girl he’d ever dated, his only love to lung cancer almost exactly a year ago.
Major is slowly but surely closing the door to earth and opening the door to heaven. He is going to a place with no pain, no sorrow, and no loss. Take a minute, a scary as it is and think about death. Are you ready for it? Where will you go after you die? Did you make a difference in anyone’s life? Will you be remembered? Put aside your ego, and look at what you’ve accomplished, is it enough? You still have time to change the outcome of your life. A bright future awaits you; you’ll determine what you become. 10/9/03

DAVE PIERCE
Dave Pierce an old and highly respected citizen passed to the great beyond at his home 3 miles northwest of town Sunday eve. Some of his children were at his bedside others who live in the west were unable to get here. The remains were laid to rest in the Pierce cemetery. Thus passes another pioneer land mark of our country.

H.A. `POPS' CARAWAY JR.
H.A. ``Pops'' Caraway Jr. peacefully met his beloved wife, Toodle, who had been watching over him from heaven, Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999.
Born March 31, 1929, in Hale Center, Texas to H.A. and Ora Caraway, H.A. enlisted in the United States Navy and served during the Korean War.
Married to Toodle on April 21, 1952, they had three children, daughter, Laura, and sons, Trey and Andy.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 9, in Robert Massie Riverside Chapel with Miguel Zuniga, Church of Christ minister, conducting services. Burial will follow in San Angelo at the Fairmount Cemetery with full military honors, by the United States Navy Honor Guard stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base.
H.A. was a true entrepreneur having started many businesses and succeeding in most. He owned his own trucking company, oil field service company and delivery service company. Known as a giving and honest person, he took care of his employees and customers, putting their welfare ahead of his own. He gave freely, helping others in times of need, contributing to numerous college scholarships for needy individuals and supporting the New Mexico Children's Home. From these activities he had a positive impact on many young people's lives.
An extraordinary person, Dad, also known as ``Guindad'' to his grandchildren, was loved and will be missed by all who knew him. Finally, H.A. and Toodle can pick up and continue the never-ending Scrabble game that was suspended when Toodle left, on Dec. 19, 1998. Be assured H.A. will continue to question the validity of Toodle's controversial plays, except now he has a higher authority than Webster's dictionary.
H.A. never met a stranger and was a believer in a good laugh and he always had an appropriate joke or comment for the situation. He loved life and was never thwarted by life's problems. Failure was not in his vocabulary and he passed that wisdom along to his children and grandchildren.
He was known by many and respected by all. H.A. was a talented man who had many interests. He collected gadgets and loved to tinker with them. He loved to cook and was a gardener.
He is survived by a daughter, Laura Powell and husband, Dyron, of Houston; two sons, Trey Caraway and wife, Polly, of San Angelo and Andy Caraway and wife, Cindi, of Merkel; grandchildren, Dyron Powell Jr. and wife, Sharla, Treyci Eyster and husband, Joe, Treyla Caraway, Christopher Caraway, Bailey Browder, Kate Caraway, Kristin Caraway and Drew Caraway; nephew, John Caraway Jr. and wife, Barbara; and sister-in-law, Anne Caraway. His faithful dog, Bugsy, was a partner and companion after the loss of his beloved wife.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Toodle; a brother, John Caraway; and two sisters, Maxine Caraway and Imogene ``Frankie'' Ramage.
The family wishes to thank Shannon Medical Center, especially AirMed 1, the emergency room, 5 north and ICU for their concern and loving care. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Kenneth T. Yoakum Sr., known to his loved ones as "Abner," was born in Middlesboro, KY, on May 12, 1938, and departed to heaven from his home on October 18, 2003, after a valiant struggle with lung cancer. Memorial services and celebration of life will be held 6 p.m. Thursday, October 23, 2003, at New Life Ministries, 80th & Benton, KCMO.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lola Campbell Yoakum; sisters, Augusta Christine Baumgardner and Verna Tanner; brother, Duke Quinton Yoakum; and infant brother, Jackie Ray Yoakum. Abner is survived by his Beloved mate, Jeannie; lifelong friend, Bill Alkire; very supportive friend, Guy Agnew; father, Roy Alvis Yoakum; sister, Helen Campbell; and brother, David Yoakum. He leaves his four daughters, Katherina T. Yoakum, Regina T. Yoakum, Joanne Green and Debra Niemeyer, and one son, Kenneth T. Yoakum Jr. Abner also leaves two stepdaughters and one stepson, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and seven step grandchildren.
Abner was well known as a roofer, master carpenter and creative interior decorator. Abner's very special events, co-hosted with Jeannie, for family and close friends were Christmas, when he created new and outstanding Christmas decor each year, and Easter, with an egg for each year (2003 eggs in the year 2003) holding cash, gifts, gift notes or candy were hidden within their enchanting acreage to the delight of little and big kids alike. Ab enjoyed country music, space films, Chiefs games, gambling, fishing, camping, and watching artists create. He appreciated quality time at home with family, "chilling out," jostling, and enhancing his natural surroundings. He loved living life to the fullest, even at risk. God was always in his Heart and at his side and Ab joined Him very peacefully. Ab is missed very much by all his loved ones. Our thanks to Heartland Hospice. DISCUSSIONS:
I would like to clear up the misunderstanding about Isaac Van Bibber and his middle name. Anna Lutz went with us several years ago to Point Pleasant to see the grave markers and explained them. I trust her judgment explicitly.
Peter VanBibber and Ann ________
Isaac VanBibber and
Sarah Davis
For some time there has been a misinterpretation that Isaac had a middle name of Michael. Isaac did NOT have a middle name. Isaac VanBibber was born February 2, 1725 about 7 miles from Baltimore, Maryland. When he heard about the confrontation of Lord Dunmore's forces near Point Pleasant, he hastened to join them.
As commonly known, the Indians overtook the forces and Isaac was wounded. He lived one day and died on October 11, 1774. At that time all of the soldiers that fell were buried in a common grave. I have been to the Point and seen the large monument erected in their memory.
Somehow, someone got the idea that he had a middle name and put up a monument to the name of Michael Van Bibber. A lady saw this monument and got into the DAR on that name.
For a long time the Battle was not considered the beginning of the Revolutionary War but many years later, Congress decreed that it definitely was.

We had a wonderful time at the Nathan Boone Homestead Days in Ash Grove, Missouri in September. The Missouri State Parks has done a wonderful job of preserving Nathan and Olive Van Bibber Boone's home in Ash Grove. The grounds are magnificent. If you are a descendant of Olive Van Bibber Boone or have an interest in the family, you should make plans to attend next September.

I am still looking for the parents of Hester Van Bibber who married Tidence Lane in Frederick, Maryland in 1742. The Isaac Van Bibber who was killed at the Battle of Point Pleasant is in the same age range as she, and they could have been brother and sister. He was in Spotsylvania County, Virginia and North Carolina at the same time she was in these two states. But, of course, I have no proof they were siblings. I have exhausted by Hester Van Bibber's in both Maryland and Delaware, and found a place for all of them but my Hester.
Thank you.

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the Van Bibber cigars. These were small stogie type cigars that came 5 or 6 to the package. The last time I saw any of them was probably back in the 60's. Maybe someone could provide some more information. It also runs in my mind (which is not like it used to be) that they were made in Indiana. It would be interesting to know if someone has something on these little fellas.
Thanks,
