ROBERT VANBEVER, SR.

Robert VanBever, Sr., one of Bell County's pioneer leaders was born at Yellow Creek on Feb. 7, 1870. He was the third of six children, the son of William and Emily Howard VanBever.

His father, William was a gallant soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War. He died when Bob was only 8, and an uncle helped care for him until he was 11. At that youthful age he started working for the railroad and local sawmill which gave him knowledge of the coal and timber business. In later years he became an entrepreneur in the coal and timber industry.

On Dec. 24, 1902 he married Bertha Bailey, the daughter of C.H. and Eliza Rice Bailey. They became the parents of five children: Clara and Robert Jr. (deceased), Myrtle, Glenn and Louise all three living as of this writing.

At age 26, Robert was elected chief of police of Pineville, but after serving two years he resigned to enlist in the Fourth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry and served during the Spanish-American War.

After the war, as a staunch Republican, he served four years as deputy sheriff. In 1902 he was elected jailer of Bell County and served two four-year terms. In 1909, he was elected sheriff of Bell County and later served as county judge. From that day he was known and called by all "Judge VanBever."

In addition to his elected offices of public service, Judge VanBever served nine years as postmaster of Pineville. He was prominent in several fraternal circles, and he and Bertha were devout members of the Methodist Church.

An editorial in the Pineville Sun newspaper in 1952 capsulized the Judge's life, "Always aligning with the forces standing for improvement of Pineville, Judge VanBever took an active part in all community endeavors, and even after age and illness made it necessary to curtail his activities, he still served in an advisory capacity whenever called upon to help his native state and county. Although he served in numerous elective and appointive offices during his long and useful life in Pineville, Judge VanBever made no enemies. Those who disagreed with him politically were quick to note his fine qualities of honesty and fairness. His charitable acts endeared him to many."

All five VanBever children married and reared their own. Clara married Clarence Wordrup and to this union four children were born: Neal, Patricia, Julia and Gail.

Robert Jr. married Zelma Goodman and to them were born Robert (Buddy) and Ann Bailey.

Myrtle married Gene Snaveley and they had one son, Charles Robert, prior to Gene's death. Myrtle later married Elmer Bush and they had three children: Gretchen, Patricia and Mary Jane.

Glenn and Nadine Compton married and parented two children, Christopher and Jan Margaret.

Louise and her husband, Avil L. McKinney added two children to the family, Avil L. II (Len) and Barbara.

The only member of Judge VanBever's immediate family still residing in Bell County is his son Glenn. Glenn's wife, Nadine, died in 1979. He bought the home place years ago and continued to reside there. Among other business and civic duties and responsibilities, Glenn, too is a devout Methodist and has served Pineville as a councilman since 1950, 43 years and is still seated on the body. The Judge would have been proud.

J. B. CARDEN BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

James Burruss Carden, of Virginia ancestry, was born near Lizemore, Clay County, on the 30th day of April, 1882, the second son of David Purinton Carden and Martha Ayre Carden. There are at present three surviving member of this family, viz: Mrs. William T. Stanard and Mr. Oliver H. Carden, of Enon, West Va., and Dr. David R. Carden, of Huntington, West Virginia.

David P. Carden moved to Enon a short time afterward, where he and his brother William D. Carden owned adjoining farms, and here "Jimmie" grew to manhood. His education was limited to the free schools which had not been established long and these advantages were interrupted by the death of his father in 1872. Notwithstanding this, he obtained a fairly good education and obtained employment in a general store conducted by George H. Alderson at Enon, West Virginia. There he remained until 1883.

At this time he came to old "Winston" on the old Gauley Bridge and Weston turnpike and was the junior partner in the J. B. Carden & Company store. This business was moved to Zela in 1885, where he bought the interest of his partner, Mr. Alderson, January 5, 1888 and started in the general mercantile business for himself.

The post office at Zela was established August 26, 1885, with James B. Carden as Postmaster, during Grover Cleveland's administration and this Commission Mr. Carden held at the time of his death, January 30, 1928. From the latest data we have, he was one of the three oldest postmasters in West Virginia in time of service, having served as such over forty-two years.

He was united in marriage to Margaret Felicity VanBibber, April 2, 1885, and to this union six children were born: Nena Ezella, Alva Olin, David Lamont, Byrna Hautense, Andrew Burrus and Olive Broaduss. Alva Olin and Olive Broaduss have preceded him to the heavenly home.

The only fraternal organization to which he belonged was the Summersville Lodge No. 76 of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons having been raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason, October 6, 1897, at Summersville, West Virginia.

He was the Democratic nominee for Member of the County Court of Nicholas County in 1908, but was defeated by fifteen votes.

At the early age of ten years he professed faith in Christ and in October, 1873, was baptized into the fellowship of the Enon Baptist Church by Elder A. N. Rippetoe. He transferred his membership to Salem Baptist Church, March 17, 1888, and was chosen a deacon April 14, 1888, which office he held to the time of his death. The Salem Baptist Sunday School elected him superintendent, June 19, 1887, in which capacity he served until the time of his death, with the exception of three short intervals, in all about thirty-five years. He was president of Hopewell Baptist Sunday School Convention in 1889, 1900, 1901, 1909 and 1913, in all five years, and was Treasurer of the Hopewell Baptist Association for the years 1902, 1903, 1906 to 1915 inclusive, and in 1917, total of thirteen years.

The writer first met J. B. Carden while he was clerk at old "Winston" in 1883, and our acquaintance ripened into an enduring friendship and we are living in anticipation of a continuance of that friendship on the unseen, shoeless sea of the Infinite, where "God is love and Love is Heaven." We were intimately associated in church work for more than thirty years and have attended Associations and Sunday School Conventions, many times traveling over the hills and valleys alone. Last June Brother Carden and myself rode side by side to the Sunday School Convention at Rainelle. Little did either of us think that we would so soon be separated and at the next Sunday School Convention he would be absent.

Shortly after Brother Carden's death I received a letter from Brother Squire Halstead in which he expressed his sorrow because of our loss. He said that the ranks of the old guard were being thinned. I immediately thought of a great Sunday School Convention which is being recruited and that Brother Carden is now a member of that great Convention whose ranks never lose a member. I therefore "Think of him fareing on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Here."

The Lord said to Israel after the death of his meek servant; "Moses, my servant is dead; now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan." Brother Carden one of the Lord's servants, is dead. Let us therefore so live that we may meet him over the Jordan in Canaan's fair land.

J. B. CARDEN PASSES AWAY

Tuesday morning this community received the news that another good man and pioneer of this county had passed away. Slowly the meaning of our loss crept into the minds of the people. After a time all this section of the county was mourning its loss.

Mr. Carden had bronchial influenza about three weeks ago. He held a high temperature for several days and when it left he apparently was on the road to recovery. Sunday he began getting worse and Monday evening his life passed away. It was thought that the high fever in the first stages of the flu had been so hard on his heart that it failed to stand the strain.

We have not learned at this writing the time of the funeral. We feel safe in saying that Rev. J. E. Brown, pastor of the Baptist Church will be in charge of the funeral and it will be held in the Zela Baptist Church.

Mr. Carden is one of the very good and respected men of this county. He has been a cornerstone of the Zela community and had held the respect of good and bad, rich and poor, old and young for many years.

The passing of Mr. Carden is not the death of an ordinary man. It means the loss of a leader. It is the loss of a gentleman in every respect.

He leaves a widow and several children to mourn their loss.

FAMILY OF WILLIAM ALEXANDER CHOWNING

William Alexander Chowning was born at Old Alton in Denton County, Texas, August 10, 1855 to James William "Washington" Chowning and Nancy Myers. The Chowning family migrated from Greene County, Illinois, to the Peters Colony in the Republic of Texas, sometime during the year 1845. Nancy Myers, William's mother, was the daughter of David Myers, a Baptist minister and his wife Letitia Reddish Myers. Nancy’s father, David Myers, traveled around Dallas County organizing Baptist Churches and he became known by the settlers as the "Dallas County Moses." He established the first Baptist Church in Dallas County, Texas.

William worked many jobs as a young man and on a trip back from working as a cowboy, driving a herd of cattle to the railhead, he met Nancy Ann Elizabeth Loyd. Nancy Ann (later known to the family as Betty) was the daughter of James H. and Melcena Zumwalt Loyd. He met Nancy when he was returning through the Oklahoma Territory in the summer of 1877, he had stopped at a farm on the Washita River to work in the threshing. He and Nancy eloped and were married September 7, 1877 in Indian Territory near what is now Marietta, Oklahoma. They returned to Texas and settled in Dallas County, then Denton County, Wise County, and finally settled on a farm in Cundiff, in Jack County, Texas. Nancy died on April 13, 1945 and William died eight years later on April 25, 1953. Both are buried in Truscott Cemetery, Knox County, Texas.

JAMES KARL VAN BIBBER

FAMILY RESEARCHER

I think it's time to pay tribute to the first Van Bibber that I was aware of who had done a huge amount of Van Bibber history. His name was James Karl Van Bibber. We corresponded for many years and my wife and I were very fortunate to have visited with him and his family many, many years ago. The first major work that he made available to me was a huge chart, written on blueprint paper. It's about 4 X 8'! The heading reads:

"A WORKING MASTER CHART

Compiled by: James K. Van Bibber

Between 1946 - 1961"

It is very marked up with many changes and additions made during the life of this chart. But still very readable. I was very surprised to find the lineage of my family down to my great grand-father, as well as four of his children.

His death was a very sad thing for me. He had introduced me, by mail to many of our current members, resulting in my learning of the many blanks and errors in my own research.

In the letter, which he had written to my mother, Ruth Brown, was written because he had located a paper I had written in college in the late 1940's.

Dear Mrs. Brown:

I have for may years been doing research on the Van Bibber family with the thought of writing its history. In this connection I will need the help of all its members. The first Van Bebbers in America had land grants from William Penn and came from Holland They arrived in German-town, Pa in 1685. Some went from there to Bohemia Manor in Cecil Co., Del. and Va.

Before I go any further for I know you are wondering where I secured your name. Emma Van Bebber of Palmdale, Calif. had written to Mrs. Maude Kincaid of Richmond, Mo. giving her your name. Mrs. Kincaid has done work on the Ray Co., Mo. Van Bebbers and Yoakums.

I will quote Emma Van Bebber's letter to Mrs. Kincaid. Quote: "A few years ago a friend of mine was visiting in Minn.-She brought back some information on the Van Bebber family-the party she was visiting was a Van Bebber and her son, who was in college had written all he could find out about the Van Bibbers-said all Van Bebbers in the United States are related - You might find out some of the things you want to know if you write to them - anyway I am wishing you luck.

Emma Van Bebber." end of quote.

MRS. A. K. WYLIE DIES IN HOSPITAL AT RANGER, NOV. 13

News of the death of Mrs. Mollie Fulfer Wylie, wife of A. K. Wylie of the Exray community, brought heartache to many Erath county friends, and deepest mourning to her family to whom she was always very dear.

Suffering from ill health over a period of several years, Mrs. Wylie had been conveyed to the home of a daughter, Mrs. C. E. Miller and family in Ranger, Texas, in the hope that the change would be beneficial. She became critically ill on Monday morning early, November 13, and was carried to the hospital in that city, where she passed away at 7:15 o'clock in the evening.

The funeral party arrived at the family home on Tuesday, but the memorial service honoring Mrs. Wylie was delayed; awaiting the arrival from California of a son, W. J. (Buddy) Wylie and wife. The service, conducted by Reverend Rucker and a minister of the Presbyterian church in Ranger, was held at the Exray Church edifice on Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The Christian ceremonies were fitly commemorative of a life that had been "hidden in Christ", since the conversion of Mollie Fulfer at the age of twelve years, when she united with the Presbyterian church, Requiem music included the old-time religious songs that she had sung in worship services since childhood.

Close to the end of the day, the body of Mrs. Fulfer was laid to rest in the Exray cemetery, and serving in the sad duties of pallbearers were Ted Fulfer, Dean Wylie, Mike Davis, Bill Nachtigal, Joe Evans, and Andrew Luttrell. Carrying the massive floral offering and decorating the church altar for the service and afterward the grave where the beloved woman sleeps were Naomi Luttrell, Billie Lou Blue, Frances Venable, Paralee Maudin, Annie Fulfer, Irene Evans, Flora Young, Sue Fulfer.

A native of Texas, Mollie Fulfer, was born in Hunt county September 30, 1872. As a little child she came to the Exray community with her parents and her home was in that section until her translation to her home in Heaven. She was married to Andrew Kelsie Wylie January 8, 1890, and to them were born thirteen children, three of whom preceded her in death.

Survivors of Mrs. Wylie are her husband and the following sons and daughters, John Wylie, Lingleville, Richard Wylie, Exray; Henry Wylie, Hobbs, N. M. ; P. D. Wylie, Fort Worth; W. J. Wylie, Cotton, Calif; Victor Wylie, Exray; Kelsie Wylie, Dallas; cage Wylie, Troy; Mrs. C. E. Miller, Ranger; and Mrs. Rex Cates, Topeka, Kan. Her decedents number nineteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A tribune immeasurable in meaning is that her children and their families "rise up to call her blessed."

FOOTPRINTS

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonged to him, and the other to the Lord.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there was only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me."

The Lord replied, "My precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

This poem was written for the Golden Wedding Anniversary of Lenard Haskel O'Neal and Ola Blanche Chowning. On May 5, 1966 they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. The poem recalls their life together.

Fifty years ago these two were wed.
Now all in the family know what Lenard said
When he asked Ola to be his wife,
And share the fortunes of his life;
"You're just my size and complexion,
And going in my direction,
If you have no objection,
I'd like to be your protection!"
So in a covered wagon pulled by Snip and Coalie,
Their path to Encino led.
Adventure awaited in the West,
With land for them to homestead.
Four children to this union were born,
Vivian in New Mexico, and early one morn,
Along came Harold, in Texas just across the line.
Then Virginia, delivered by Pop (for a doctor he did pine).
They then decided you just couldn't win
For here came this child named Len.
Thru all their life he has been very tender,
While she responds with her love thru the years,
Always repressing his doubts and fears.
So this is the saga of the O'Neal marriage,
From covered wagon thru baby carriage.
To their eight grandsons and their seven granddaughters,
May theirs an example be
As they set sail on the matrimonial sea.

QUERIES:

I am looking for some information about my grandfather Rufus VanBibber who is buried at Severance, Kansas. I am not sure just where he was born. He had three sons, my father Charles, Norman, and Richard, plus two daughters Eunice and Francis. All have passed away. Rufus had four brothers, one who was a twin I think, his name was Reuben. His parents were Isaac F. Van Bibber and Louisa Ellen Sharp. If anyone knows more about this person I would like hear from them.

Carl VanBibber and Mary "Loretta' Van Bibber -- [email protected]

Carl,

The following is what I have on your grandfather. He was Rufus Ernest Van Bibber born on August 16, 1876 in Dekalb Co., MO. Rufus was one of twelve children born to Isaac Franklin Van Bibber and Louisa Ellen Sharp. He had a twin by the name of Rueben Emery VanBibber. Rufus and Rueben were the second and third child of Isaac and Louisa. They had an old brother by the name of Henry Manford VanBibber. At the age of twenty-eight Rufus married Julia A. Austin on November 9, 1904 in Troy, Doniphan Co., KS. Rufus and Julia were recorded on the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census living in Doniphan County. Five children were born to them; Richard E., Charles Edwin, Frances, Eunice Virginia and Norman Rufus Van Bibber. Rufus died on April 24, 1943 and is buried in Oakhill Cemetery, Severance, Doniphan Co., KS. Julia died on May 26, 1972 in St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., MO and is buried in Iola Cemetery, South of Sparks, Doniphan Co., KS.

In the November 2002 edition of the newsletter I listed the Charter Members who were still subscribers after six years. I over looked one of our cousins, he being Charles "Chuck" Schafer, Jr. Chuck had changed his e-mail address on more than one occasion over the years. I thought we had lost him but somewhere in the list of over 600 subscribers he was still there. My apologies go out to you Chuck. Of the twenty-two Charter Member subscribers, thirteen are still with us.

I have numerous projects I am working on in helping to record and document the history of the Van Bibber family. Besides providing you with the monthly newsletter, I spent countless hours over the last six months looking up members of the family on the 1930 United States Federal Census. This not only includes locating them, but recording and typing the information in a readable format along with the identifications. I am pleased to inform you the Van Bibber families from the 1930 census are now available for your viewing.

This information contains over 50 typed pages with 296 footnotes identifying the Van Bibbers on this census. It is quite large……..in fact, when Bruce loaded them to the Van Bibber website he had to split the HTML version into two parts. When you go to the links to access these records please be patient. It took me over six months of work and took Bruce numerous days of trial and error in getting them uploaded. It may take a couple of minutes for them to download for you, but I think it will be well worth the wait.

I know I am missing about seven or eight Van Bibber families from this census. I feel eventually I will locate them. If you know of any member of the family who you feel I missed, please let me know.

I want to thank Bruce for doing an outstanding job in getting them uploaded to the website. I know there were some times of frustration because they were so large and difficult to work with. With his patience and expertise he was able to overcome a difficult task. Once again Bruce, thanks for the outstanding job!

Hi Gary,

I was just able to read the good news of your continuation as the Van Bibber newsletter editor, last evening. Randy came by and hooked my computer back up after my being off line since the first part of December. I could hardly wait to read your latest newsletter and was thrilled to learn that you are continuing as editor and publisher. All the hard work and effort that you, Bruce and all the other contributors have put into this project is too precious to lose, and the loss of contact with all the family and friends would be devastating. As I read your words and the words of others in commemoration and devotion to Earl Quintrell and his life, I shed some tears. It was a wonderful tribute to him and was very touching, and I'm sure he would be most pleased if he knew how much you all cared and remembered him.

With blessings, Jean Van Bibber Murphy
