Vol. 6 No. 5 - March 2003
Here we are into the month of March and I know some parts of the country have taken a rather bad beating from Old Man Winter, especially if you live on the east coast. The bright side of being in the later part of Winter is that Spring is right around the corner. Before you know it, the flowers will be blooming in the gardens and the birds will be chirping outside your kitchen window.
This is the 27th newsletter where I have been your editor. I am not so sure what keeps me going other than it is something I enjoy doing. I never had visions I would last this long, but sometimes you just got to go for it!
Once again, thanks to all of those who submitted articles. Your contributions make the newsletter interesting and beneficial for all.
I want to wish everyone a "Happy St. Patrick's Day." You might not have any Irish in your veins from your Van Bibber lineage, but I am sure most of us can trace one line or another of ours back to Ireland.
Your Editor,
Gary R. Hawpe

RAILWAY CROSSING ACCIDENT KILLS
THREE VAN BEBBERS
Funeral Services Are Held Here
Monday Afternoon
Tragedy struck the Van Bebber family Thursday, Nov. 11, when Mr. and Mrs. I. C. Van Bebber and their daughter, Mrs. Bill Kruger were killed when the car they were riding in was struck by a Santa Fe train at Stratford.
Mr. Van Bebber was killed instantly, Mrs. Kruger, the former Vesta Van Bebber, lived for about 30 minutes, and Mrs. Van Bebber lived until the following morning when she died in an Ada hospital.
The other two occupants of the car Bill Kruger and Lillie Van Bebber were injured and were taken to an Ada hospital. They were brought to Lindsay this week, and both attended the funeral Monday.
The five had been in Ada visiting a son of Mr. and Mrs. Van Bebber, Eddie, and his family, and were returning to Lindsay when the accident occurred at 5:20 on the edge of Stratford where Highways 18 and 19 and the Santa Fe railroad intersect.
Apparently Kruger, who was driving, was blinded by the sun and failed to see the approaching train. The car was reported to have been going about 25 miles an hour. It was reported that the train was traveling 15 miles an hour.
It struck the car at about the middle. Mrs. Van Bebber was pinned between the car and the cowcatcher on the engine and it was some time before she could be extricated.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church here Monday afternoon. The Revs. Leonard Payne and Walter Douglass conducted the service. Rev. Douglass is a former pastor of the local church and is now at Wilson. Rev. Payne is the pastor now.
Hundreds of friends of the Van Bebber family attended the funeral. Only a part of the large number attending the service could get into the church.
Burial was in the Green Hill cemetery under the direction of the Brown Funeral home.
All three of the deceased were member of the Methodist church. Mr. and Mrs. Van Bebber joined at the same time. Mrs. Kruger joined four years ago.
The Van Bebbers had been residents of Lindsay for the past 25 years. For the past 18 months Mrs. Kruger had been in California working in a defense plant. It was only about a week before the accident that they returned to Lindsay, to make their home.
Six of the Van Bebber children survive. They are Eddie Van Bebber, Ada; Mrs. Ted Crotte, Marlow; Lillie, O. C., Beadie and Andy, all of Lindsay. Seven grandchildren survive.
Mr. and Mrs. Gus Kruger of Richmond, Calif., parents of Bill Kruger, were unable to make the trip to Lindsay for the funeral.
Isaac Criss Van Bebber
Isaac Criss Van Bebber was born May 8, 1872, in Livingston county, Mo. He was nearing 72 years of age at the time of his death.
In 1893 he was married to Martha Jane Savage at Ardmore. He had moved to this section of the country when only a boy. For the past 25 years they had made their home in the Lindsay community.
Eleven children were born to this union. Four died in infancy. Six children survive, seven grandchildren, and one brother, Andy Van Bebber of Comanche.
Martha Jane Savage Van Bebber
Martha Jane Savage was born in Montague county on December 25, 1872. Besides her surviving children and grandchildren, she is survived by four brothers who are John Savage of Alma, Green and Tom Savage of Oklahoma City and Sam Savage of Lindsay.
Vesta Claraette Van Bebber Kruger

EULOGY OF GOLDIE VAN BIBBER PUTNAM
Dear Friends of Mrs. GOLDIE VAN BIBBER PUTNAM,
Mrs. Putnam asked me to conduct her funeral, using the Order for the Burial of the Dead of the Episcopal Church. It is a privilege for me to do so. I have brought with me several copies of my Church's Book of Common Prayer, and I ask that you use them for this service. The Order begins on page 324. Please leave the Books in the Church as you leave.
The Service in which we are about to participate is a service of the people of God commending to His infinite goodness and mercy our dear friend. At the Cemetery, we bury only the physical remains, the bodily shell of one who has gone on into the nearer presence of our God. At all times, we seek to comfort the members of Mrs. Putnam's family who remain with us in our present existence.
At appropriate places, I shall ask you to participate with me in the service; first, by reading the even verses of Psalm cxxi on page 327 in response to my reading of the odd verses; second, by saying The Lord's Prayer.
Goldie van Bibber was born February 28, 1885 in Montrose, Colorado, the daughter of Marshall and Hattie van Bibber. The family moved to eastern Oregon, and Miss van Bibber started teaching school there at the age of 18. After attending the University of Oregon, she became School Supervisor on the Oregon Coast.
Goldie van Bibber married Fred Putnam on November 16, 1916, and they lived in Monument, Oregon for several years. They came to the area of Inchelium in 1922. She died quietly in her home on December 4th, 1965. Mrs. Putnam leaves several member of her family --
Her son Carl V. Putnam and his wife Florence.
Her three grandchildren - Jim, Fred and Julia.
Her step-daughter Josephine Bockler of Portland, Oregon.
Her sister Louise Clark of Spokane, Washington.
Two brothers, Clyde van Bibber of Chewelah, Washington and Rolfe van Bibber of LaGrande, Oregon.
"Thanks be to God who gives us the victory over death through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!"
Faithfully yours,

JAMES ALEXIS SHRIVER
James Alexis Shriver was born in 1872. A Baltimore resident during his early years, Shriver moved to near Joppa in Harford County after graduating from Cornell in the early 1890's. Born of a wealthy and well-known Maryland family, he invested money and assumed the Presidency of the Baltimore and Bel Air Telephone Company in the late 1890's. After selling the firm to the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company, Shriver became involved with the Bel Air Electric Company and still later with the Baltimore and Bel Air Railroad Company. This last venture was essentially a streetcar line that connected Cockeysville, Timonium and Towson about 1910 to 1923. It apparently was not very successful, and folded in 1923 with public preference for a new bus service.
Just after the turn of the century, Shriver became very active in the Harford County Historical Society. He initiated an extensive membership drive to create interest and revenue for the organization, and was somewhat successful. His goal was to gather enough funds for a separate building, allowing the Society to leave the Bel Air Court House. From within the Society, Shriver launched an ambitious program to draw attention to what he felt historically important. He authored a compendious history of George Washington's 127 trips through Maryland, replete with trivia concerning taverns visited and roads traveled. In a similar fashion, Shriver wrote a work entitled Lafayette in Harford County which related accounts of the famous Frenchman's activities in the area named.
Shriver was not one to just write about his ideas concerning history; he wanted to make them highly visible by means of display and festivities. He caused a number of cast iron road markers to be raised along the highways and byways of the state. Most were concerning with Washington's well-documented journeys, and all were unveiled with as much ceremony as could be gotten from the situation. Going several steps further, Shriver evinced his penchant for organizing and administrating by means of heavy involvement with a number of state and local committees aimed at public celebration of historic events. He was heavily involved with the Lafayette Sesqui-Centennial of 1931, the George Washington Bicentennial of 1932, The Ark and The Dove Day festivities of 1933, and the Maryland Tercentennary of 1933-1934. Of this latter organization, Shriver was General Director for about four months before he resigned under pressure from the Executive Committee.
In his waning years, Shriver devoted his time mostly to placement of road markers and writing short articles for local papers. He died at his residence, Olney, at age 79 on February 6, 1951 survived by his wife, Harriet Van Bibber Shriver.

Is there a proven Revolutionary War Patriot in the Van Bebber/Van Bibber line? My daughter, Mary Ellen, is really wanting to become part of the Daughters of the American Revolution. I'm looking for information that might help me with this process. My husband descends from Isaac Van Bibber and Sarah Davis down through their great granddaughter, Hannah Van Bebber, who married Charles Poff.

I am looking for the link of my great grandmother, Sarah VanBaber b. 1852 in Arkansas., who married John Cox b. 1836 in Missouri. John was first married to Elizabeth Griffey Lunsford and they had two sons, James and William Cox. Elizabeth died about 1870 in Polk County, Arkansas and John married Sarah on November 21, 1872 in Polk County. They were living in Scott County, Arkansas when the 1880 census was recorded. John and Sarah would have nine children with their oldest daughter, Sarah Elizabeth b. 1873, being my grandmother. Sarah VanBaber Cox died in 1916 and is buried in the Rock Springs Cemetery, Polk County, Arkansas.
Who were the parents of Sarah VanBaber?

I'm looking for information pertaining to Lena Van Bibber b. 1901 and her two daughters, Maxine b. 1914 and Pauline b. 1918. Lena was supposedly my father, Lewis (Louis) A. Van Bibber's first wife and the two girls were his step daughters as Lena had been previously married. I have never been able to find a marriage license or divorce papers on Lewis and Lena. On the 1930 census, Lena and the two girls are living in St. Louis, Missouri and they are all three listed as Van Bibbers. My parents, Lewis Van Bibber and Hazel Hulsey, were married on August 24, 1929 in Mississippi County, Arkansas.
I am looking for a possible marriage license on Lewis and Lena. Who was her first husband? What happened to Lena and her two daughters, Maxine and Pauline, after the 1930 census was recorded?

James VanBebber and Hannah Hoover
I have hit a brick wall on Hannah Hoover's birth place and her parents. Census records say she was born in North Carolina but I do not believe this to be true. Hannah had her first child ca 1793. There are many Hoovers in Tax lists in Russell and Lee counties VA. An informant tells me that James and Hannah were married ca 1791 in Russell Co., VA. In Campbell Co., TN deed Book E, Oct. 1821, James and Hannah are mentioned along with her brothers and sisters, so her father must have settled in that county.
The boundaries of VA and NC changed so frequently that I believe Hannah didn't know exactly where she was born.
I have been working on this for years with no positive results. Can anyone help me? I promise to answer all e-mails know matter how little the information is. Thank you.

I found that James Cole Jr. born abt 1730 married in 1754 to Mary Rentfroe the daughter of James Rentfroe, Sr. born abt 1703 married Esther (Hester) Van Bibber in 1719. Esther (Hester) Van Bibber was born 1700. Who were the parents of Esther (Hester) Van Bibber? Any help at all would be very much appreciated.

I have been helping Robert Noel with his Noel/Van Bibber line. I don't know what has been covered on this particular quest. The question I have is -- Could the Sarah Van Bibber who married Madison Noel have been the daughter of Peter Van Bibber who died in Ripley Co., Indiana? Does anyone have his will which may list all of his children or grandchildren....or the estate settlement to see if any Noel purchased the items? Any idea who that Sarah might be connected to? I have searched the courthouse at Gallatin and Switzerland Co's, and turned up nothing on Van Bibber or Noel in either place. I've been to Owen Co., KY also, but turned up nothing. Any suggestions? Thanks! ~

Does anyone have access to this newspaper article? I am sure it must be about Theodore Van Bibber, brother to Ira Van Bibber of the Yukon.

Gary,
I would like to thank you for continuing in your association with the Van Bibber newsletter. I look forward to reading it and adding cousins to my ged file.
You were most helpful to me in my search for my family connection to the Van Bibbers and the Boones. I'll try not to make this too long . . .
When my mom was in high school she was required to do research into her family roots. Her uncle, Jack Woodward had talked to her before about the family connection to the Boone family so she interviewed him. You can view my transcription of the rough notes of this paper at the following website:
http://www.geocities.com/capsampson/page1/momsgene.htmlWhen I became interested in putting together a ged file and archive of our family almost 4 years ago I started with this high school paper. In it, there are just a few errors that hindered me in my search for the exact connection. I'm not sure you remember how you helped me, but we had thought that we had descended from a woman named Sarah "Boone". You saw one of my postings on rootsweb and redirected me to what the reality was. Sarah was actually the daughter of Joseph Van Bibber and Susan Boone.
I realize now why there was an error in our family oral history. Sarah's parents, Joseph and Susan died when Sarah was very young and she went to live with Nathan and Olive Boone on their farm in Ash Grove, probably when she was under 4 or 5 years old. She would have remembered very little, if anything about her parents.
Anyway, I am very grateful to you for helping me. I feel like it is now my duty and obligation to write down everything I can and pass it on to my family.
Thanks again,
Craig Snyder
