Memorial Day…it's not a war…it's about people. They died, most of them young, serving their fellow Americans, their country, future generations--all of us. This Memorial Day, please pause with Americans at home and abroad to honor the men and women who died so that we might enjoy the gift of freedom. Let us never forget their sacrifice.
This newsletter is dedicated to the men and women of the Van Bibber family who have served our country in military service through the years and have paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

BOGGSVILLE
Boggsville was founded in 1862 by Thomas O. Boggs and his wife Rumalda Luna Bent, the stepdaughter of Charles Bent. William Bent lived on his ranch located north of Boggsville that he established in 1858. In 1867 Boggs was joined by John Prowers and his brother-in-law, John Hough. Both Boggs and Prowers worked for the Bent brothers and Ceran St. Vrain in their trading enterprises at Bent's Old Fort and in Taos, New Mexico. In 1867, the famous frontiers-man, Kit Carson moved to Boggsville, which was his last home before he died in 1868 at Fort Lyon. The diverse cultural groups that comprised Boggsville included Americans, New Mexicans, Native Americans. As a major site on the Boggsville Branch of the Santa Fe Trail during the 1860's, Boggsville served as the nucleus of permanent settlement of the Arkansas Valley and southeastern Colorado. Between 1863 and 1873 Boggsville became the regional center for agriculture, government, commerce and culture (it was the first county seat of Bent County created in 1870 in the Colorado Territory and encompassed approximately 9,000 square miles.) Boggsville had a trading house and a stage stop and also had the first school in Bent County. During its prominent period more than 20 structures were located in town.

Friends kept hope, pal alive after avalanche.
Fairbanks -- While waiting for a rescue helicopter to arrive, Lucas VanBebber's friends worked to keep him warm and stable.
Their friend was bruised and battered, his snow machine totaled, after being caught in an avalanche. After a two-hour vigil, a helicopter touched down to take VanBebber to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage.
VanBebber, 28, was listed in critical condition at the hospital Monday night.
He left his home at Slime Creek with five friends about 10:45 a.m. Saturday. The group planned to do some skiing, said Ben Johnson, 29, a member of the snow machining party.
The snow machiners split up into two groups. Johnson was a little behind VanBebber and Luke Lohnuller when he saw the avalanche hit.
"I would say that the tip of it broke off at 2 1/2, three feet deep. And it was probably 40 feet wide at the top, and then it fanned out bigger. It probably ran 1,500 vertical feet until it stopped," Johnson said.
Alaska State Troopers placed the location of the avalanche about 4.5 miles east of Mile 219.5 of the Parks Highway.
Johnson and another member of the group, Mike Speaks, are emergency medical technicians. They helped stabilize VanBebber after the avalanche while Lohnuller took his snow machine and rode seven miles before reaching a truck and then driving another eight miles to call police.
Lohnuller called 911. The helicopter began transporting VanBebber to the hospital at 3:45 p.m., said Healy trooper Patrick Nelson.
Other members of the snow machine party included Carlo Creek dog musher Eric O'Berg, 25, and Becky Warren, 28, Johnson's partner in running Denali Mountain Morning Hostel.
"We always try to be prepared for this kind of thing. We've all taken classes at one time or another," Johnson said.
Three members of the group carried avalanche beacons. Each had extra clothing that was used to keep VanBebber warm.

THE WEDDING OF JAMES KNOX POLK THROWER AND NANCY JESSIE
VAN BIBBER
James and Jessie were married in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia on the 26th of September, 1883. Jessie is written-up in this article as "Miss Jessie N. Van Bibber". Although she went by Jessie, her actual name is Nancy Jessie Van Bibber (source – Family Bible – "Nancy Jessie Van Bibber was born Nov. 7th 1859"). In 1889 James K. P. Thrower (b. 19 Jun 1845) worked as a foreman at M Bergstrom Printing, 262 East Hunter St., Atlanta GA. He is the son of Benjamin Thrower (b. 1803) and Elizabeth Dial (b. 1804).
The following is an article about their wedding. The announcement is credited to the collection of R. Grey of Kansas City, Mo.
MARRIAGE AT THE 5TH BAPTIST CHURCH
The Fifth Baptist church was packed to its utmost capacity last evening to witness the marriage of Mr. James K. Thrower and Miss Jessie N. Van Bibber. At the appointed hour the happy couple entered the church and approached the altar, where they were met by the pastor Rev. Virgil C. Norcross who in a most impressive and beautiful manner performed the ceremony. After the final words had been spoken and the pastor's touching benediction pronounced, the friends of the newly married couple besieged them with heartfelt congratulations.
The party then repaired to the home of the groom where a splendid collation was spread and a most delightful evening spent. A number of valuable and useful presents were displayed.
Mr. Thrower is a well known typographic artist, and was raised in Atlanta, and has served acceptably as a member of the city council. His cleverness has won the friendship of all. His bride is a handsome and accomplished lady, with a large store of practical good sense, and they enter upon their new career under the most auspicious of circumstances, with many a heartfelt prayer for their future success and happiness."
