Van Bibber Title

A free monthly electronic newsletter for the VAN BIBBER, VANBIBER,
VAN BEBBER, VANBEBER, VANBABER, VANBEVER,
VANBEVERS and MANBEVERS families.

Vol. 7 No. 10 - August 2004

For the first time in 44 months I have struggled to get the Van Bibber newsletter published for you. My goal was to always have it to Bruce by the end of the month, but through a combination of things I am about two weeks late. All said and done though, here it is, your family newsletter. Hopefully it is worth the extra wait, and I hope to get back on track for next month and finish the year strong. As I have previously mentioned, December will be my last issue as your editor.

Don't forget, September's newsletter will be our Kentucky edition. If you can trace your Van Bibber roots back to this state we would enjoy hearing from you. Last month was our West Virginia edition and you can see how successful it was. I know there are a lot of you out there who have Kentucky roots.

I am sad to report that one of our subscribers, Julia Marcum, 2nd great granddaughter of Canada H. Rogers and Nancy M. Van Bebber, has informed me that last month she was diagnosed with breast cancer and it has spread throughout her body. We ask everyone to remember Julia in their prayers as she fights this dreadful disease. God willing, she will overcome. If you would like to send Julia a word of encouragement you can e-mail her at the following address: Julia Marcum -- [email protected] .

Your Editor,

Gary R. Hawpe

VANBIBBER - ROBINSON

Cook L. VanBibber was born 7 Apr 1862 in Meigs County, the son of Loyal VanBibber (born 17 Sep 1822, died 4 May 1864) and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Robinson (born 19 Aug 1825, died 26 Mar 1904). His mother was the daughter of Aaron and Susan Bolin Robinson and granddaughter of William and Mary Lowe Robinson and Benjamin and Mary Lee Bolin.

Cook VanBibber's brother Robinson VanBibber (born 1846) enlisted for three years service on 2 Aug 1862 as a private in the 92nd Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company A. Robinson VanBibber was killed 25 Nov 1863 in the Battle of Mission Ridge, Tennessee and was buried at Chattanooga.

Cook VanBibber had three other brothers and two sisters: Hamilton C. (born 1847, died 20 Feb 1897), who married Rhoda Skelley (born 9 Dec 1850, died 19 Jul 1894), whose first husband was Asa Metcalfe, Oscar (born 1851), who married Margaret Wilson; Susannah (born 29 Aug 1853, died 17 Oct 1938), who married first Mordecai A. West and second John Trainer; and Mariah (born 21 Mar 1857, died 8 Feb 1932), who married John Cline (born October 1852, died 1933).

Cook VanBibber married Margaret "Margie" Jane Allen in Vinton County on 19 Jun 1885. Margie Allen was born 2 May 1864, the daughter of Josiah and Louisa Blackburn Allen.

Cook and Margie Allen VanBibber had four children: Clarence H. (born 29 Apr 1886), who married first Jennie C. Davis (born 5 Oct 1889, died 7 Dec 1907) and second Emma Harkins (born Oct 1892), daughter of Aaron and Mary Huston Harkins; Louisa (born September 1889), who married Clarence Davis (born 1880); Erastus (born Apr 1894), who married Maggie B. Markins (born 1896); and Emma M. (born January 1897), who married Cash Zimmerman (born 1 Oct 1885), son of Henry and Jediah Mercer Zimmerman.

A news item from Bolen's Mills dated 27 Jul appeared in the McArthur Democrat Enquirer on Thursday 30 Jul 1896: "Knox Township has a new post office. Its name is Van. It will be found every day in the week at the residence of Cook Vanbibber, on Union Ridge."

Margie Allen VanBibber died at Knox Township, Vinton County on 11 Apr 1921 and is buried at Putnam Cemetery. On Monday, 12 Jun 1922 Cook VanBibber was killed when the car he was driving was struck and demolished by a train. The front page of the Republican Tribune of 14 Jun 1922 reported: "On their way home from Columbus, Monday morning, Cook VanBibber, George E. Gibbs, and Aaron Harkins, all of Knox Township, in Mr. VanBibber's machine, stopped here for a short time and proceeded on their way home, and when on reaching the crossing of the Hocking Valley, on East Main Street, were struck by the north bound passenger train and instantly killed, The victims of the crossing tragedy Monday were all respected citizens of Knox Township, and all well known here."

Aaron Harkins was the father-in-law of Clarence H. VanBibber, George E. Gibbs was Cook VanBibber's first cousin (their mother's were sisters). Cook VanBibber's obituary states the accident occurred at 10:47 a.m. when he was "on his way home from Columbus where he had spent a few happy hours with his sons and daughter." He is buried at Putnam Cemetery.

BROWN PICKS UP ANOTHER HASA TITLE

The surfer wins his second Hawaii
Amateur Surfing Association State
championship

By Brandon Lee
Special to the Star-Bulletin

Considering that he won a state surfing title last year after stuffing himself with chocolate cake, it wouldn't have been a surprise if Casey Brown repeated the ritual this year.

But preferring to surf without stomach pains -- and perhaps superstition as well -- Brown avoided overdoing dessert the night before, but still surfed his way to a title yesterday at the Hawaii Amateur Surfing Association state championships at Ala Moana Bowls.

In his first year having to surf in the ultra-competitive junior men's (ages 15-17) shortboard category, the 16-year-old from Kona took down some big names to win the prestigious division. Brown was the boys (12-14) state shortboard champion in 2003.

"I waited for the sets," said Brown, a Kealakehe High School student, when asked his secret to success this year. "I just tend to wait for the good ones -- the bigger the wave the better, for sure."

Waves were in the 2- to 6-foot-face range at the left-breaking Bowls for the 27 division finals yesterday. Approximately 300 competitors from across the state participated in the three-day event, with the top 12 finishers in each division qualifying for the American Surfing Championships next Sunday through Thursday at Huntington Beach, Calif.

In snagging the top spot in his 15-minute, six-surfer junior men's final, Brown picked off his best wave eight minutes in and managed two strong off-the-top hits, before following with a deep cutback and then finishing with another hit. He scored 7.50 points (out of 10 maximum) for the wave, and added a 5.70 for a winning two-wave total of 13.20.

Maui's Ola Eleogram (11.10) finished runner-up to Brown, while Oahu's Robert Wurlitzer (9.40), the junior men's winner at last week's Surf Into Summer event, placed third.

Fourth through sixth were: Gavin Gillette, T.J. Barron and Torrey Meister.

"Ola and Gavin and all those guys pump me up," said Brown, of his older and more experienced competition. "Those are the ones that push me and I'm stoked that I got to beat them. They make me surf to my fullest. I don't feel intimidated."

Despite losing the junior men's title to Brown, Eleogram recovered quickly and won the tough open men's shortboard championship less than two hours later with a 15.90 total in that final. Finishing behind the Hana surfer, in order, were: Clay Marzo, Gillette, Drew Irons, Dusty Payne and Wesley Larson.

A polished and successful amateur, Eleogram will turn professional by early next year.

"I wish I would have won juniors too, but I'm stoked that I won open, at least," Eleogram, 18, said. "You just gotta go in with the mindset to win every heat, try to win everything, that's how you get through."

Other notable winners yesterday included Kekoa Cazimero in the boys shortboard and Lani Hunter in the girls (17-under) shortboard. Both surfers are from Oahu.

Cazimero's victory came after he narrowly lost the boys title at Surf Into Summer a week ago, while Hunter's represented her second girls championship in as many weeks.

"I won this title last year, so I'm glad I was able to defend it," said Cazimero, who turned 15 on Saturday and is a sophomore-to-be at Kaiser High.

Hunter, also 15, won in impressive fashion as well.

"I was just in the right spot at the right time, and surfed that wave as hard as I could," said Hunter, a home-school student.

HARRY PALMER PIONEER STAGE DRIVER, DIES

During Napa’s early days, Mr. Palmer’s parents, James and Sophia Boggs Palmer, owned the area extending from Trubody Station beyond the Veterans Home.

As a young man, Mr. Palmer moved to Lake County where for many years he drove a stage. He enjoyed relating the story of how his coach was once held up by the famed bandit, Black Bart.

Returning to Napa, Mr. Palmer worked as a coachman for the George Goodman family until 1920. Later he operated one of the family’s grain ranches in the upper Sacramento Valley.

Before his retirement 20 years ago, Mr. Palmer ran an auto paint shop in Napa.

BITS AND PIECES:

MYSTERIOUS SHOOTING

Cincinnati, Oct. 17 -- On the night of October 4, Andrew Vanbibber of this city, shot his wife, mistaking her for a burglar. This matter was kept secret, and Mrs. Vanbibber was put under treatment at the Cincinnati hospital. Last night the secret leaked out and was published today. Vanbibber was arrested but instantly released on the belief that the shooting was accidental. The attempt at secrecy has given the affair an air of mystery, and will cause a full investigation. Mrs. Vanbibber is at the point of death tonight.

REUNIONS:

BOONE / VANBIBBER FAMILY REUNION

Mr. Logan:

My name is Dakota Russell, and I'm part of the staff at Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site. The reason I write you now is because of a conversation I had with Tim Reese (Nathan Boone descendant and organizer of the historic site's annual family reunion). Your name came up as we were discussing how to make sure Van Bibber descendants knew the invite extended to them. The reunion (to be held on September 18th) is part of our larger Homestead Days Festival event. There is a potluck lunch at noon and a family meeting with the site staff at 4:30 pm. Tim also asks me to make clear that this is not just for direct-line descendants. We are very happy to have interested cousins. We would appreciate anything you can do to spread the word through the Van Bibber family. You can e-mail Tim for more info on the reunion ( [email protected] ) or contact me for more details on the event. Directions and information about the site are located at http://www.mostateparks.com/boonehome.htm. Thanks for your help!

QUERIES:

WHO WAS RAYMON VANBIBER AND/OR RAY J. VANBIBBER?

The 1900 U.S. Federal Census, Indiana, Warrick County, Boon Township, Boonville City, Ward 4 (ED-147, Page 194 B, Line 79) has the following person in the "Orphan's Home" at 322 Locust Street: Vanbiber, Raymon, white, male, 11 years old, born December 1889 in Indiana, and both parents born in Indiana. His relation to head of the "head of the family" (Matron of Home) appears to read "Dep".

Ten years later on April 15, 1910 in Portsmouth, Virginia, at the U.S. Navy Yard (ED-101, Page 28 A, Line 49), the Census Enumerator recorded the following Sailor in the U.S. Navy: Vanbibber, Ray J., white, male, twenty something years old (hard to read but appears to be 21), born in Indiana and parents born in Indiana. The "head of the family" is reported as William F. Halsey, Jr., 27 years old, who later became Fleet Admiral and famous in WWII as "Bull Halsey".

Submitted by Dave Van Bibber -- [email protected]

Dave,

Raymond J. Van Bibber was the son of William Albert VanBibber and Mary Ann Sutton. William was the son of Isaac VanBibber and Missouri Ann Sutton. It appears all the children of William and Mary were orphaned out. Raymond was living in New Madrid County, Missouri on the 1920 census in the home of Elza and Elizabeth Moser. He is listed as a boarder and his occupation was a tie maker. This is no doubt a railroad tie maker. It states he and his parents were all born in Indiana. I don't ever recall finding him on the 1930 census and I believe someone thought that he had gone to Mexico. I have no further information on him after his recording on the 1920 census.

Dear Gary,

I enjoyed your newsletter with all the West Virginia VanBebbers so much this month but I was also dismayed with the news you will soon leave the "editor" position. I am so new to this researching and have learned so much from you and cannot thank you enough for all you have done for all of us "Vanbibber/Vanbebbers." I do, however, understand your need for your own time and cannot even imagine how many hours this newsletter has taken from you.
