VAN BIBBER PIONEERS E-NEWSLETTER Vol. 7 No. 12
Van Bibber Title

A free monthly electronic newsletter for the VAN BIBBER, VANBIBER,
VAN BEBBER, VANBEBER, VANBABER, VANBEVER,
VANBEVERS and MANBEVERS families.

Vol. 7 No. 12 - October 2004

For the last month I have been extremely busy and it set me back a little in getting the newsletter published. But, as I have for the last 46 months, here is your copy of the family newsletter published by me. This has been a marathon race and I am almost to the finish line. As you know, December will be my last issue as your editor. Surprisingly, I look back over the last four years and sometimes wonder how I lasted this long. I may stumble, I may fall and I may be a little late, but I will be there at the finish. I guess when you enjoy doing something it makes it more pleasurable.

We had quite a few submitters for this month's newsletter and I appreciate the information by all those who contributed. It not only makes good reading but makes my job a lot easier. For those of you who have been holding back, now is the time to get your information sent to me so we can get it published. Hopefully, we will have the newsletter in the up coming year, but if by chance we don't, you may have missed a good opportunity to get your information in the family publication.

I hope everyone enjoyed their Halloween holiday and likewise, I hope you enjoy your Halloween issue of the Van Bibber Pioneers newsletter.

Your Editor,

Gary R. Hawpe

WITH ANYONE ELSE BUT ME

Planted during World War I,

Special for the Willits News

Four generations picked gravenstein apples from a tree planted in 1917 by Eliza Van Bebber at her home on West Oak Street. Wilma Sweazey, a granddaughter of Eliza, currently owns the home, which has been in the Van Bebber ownership for nearly 90 years.

When several of Eliza's children, including Wilma's father Bill, were drafted in World War I, Eliza planted the apple tree and other fruit trees on a vacant lot she owned next to her home. The tree has been producing ever since.

Celebrating this year's harvest were Wilma Sweazey, current owner, Benjamin Malugani, 9, a neighbor and friend; Sharon Van Bebber, wife of Ted; Theodore Van Bebber, great grandson, with his "Willits" shirt; Melanie McKissick, 9, great-great-great granddaughter, Katherine McGarvey, 10, great-great-great-granddaughter, Mathew McGarvey, 12, great-great-great-grandson; Theodore John Van Bebber III, 12, great-great-great grandson; Theodore John Van Bebber, Jr., great-great-grandson; Ian McKissick, 3, great-great-grandson.

Wilma and Ian were born on the same day, Dec. 13, some 67 years apart. Theodore and Melaine were born on the same day, June 24, some 65 years apart.

EARL WILSON QUINTRELL

Earl Wilson QuntrellTwo years ago this month we lost one of the most dedicated and knowledgeable Van Bibber family researchers of all time. He was Earl Wilson Quintrell, who at the time of his death was eighty-two years old. Earl, even though he was not a Van Bibber descendant, spent over a quarter century researching our family. For those of you who knew or had the opportunity to correspond with him, knew just how dedicated he was when it came to documenting the history of the Van Bibbers. I had the opportunity to know and correspond with Earl over the last fourteen years of his life. It was Earl who kept me motivated over all those years to continue with my research on the family. Even though he is in another place now, his memories, letters and friendly chats on the phone will never be forgotten. We miss you Earl and want you to know the research on the Van Bibber family continues. You are always in our thoughts.

QUERIES:

A Google search led me to your newsletter.  I am trying to learn about Thomas P. Stoney of Napa and San Francisco, and the entry you wrote about Rodney Hudson mentioned that Judge Hudson served for a while in Judge Stoney's office in Napa.

This sets up a tenuous, but very interesting thread to my main interest of my own family:

In 1868 my g-grandfather came from the South to the Napa Valley, and his first job was in the store of a Mr. VanBever, who had "The Beehive Store" there in Napa.

I notice that your newsletter includes persons named VanBever - do you have any contributors who are connected with Mr. VanBever of Napa CA in the 1860s and that general period?  I would be interested to learn more about him, particularly if he (like the Hudsons) had Southern connections?  My g-grandfather was a Confederate veteran and said that he decided on Napa because it had "good Southern values."

Thank you referring me to any possible connections to Mr. VanBever and his history.

Sincerely, Nancy Wilson
