Van Bibber Title

A free monthly electronic newsletter for the VAN BIBBER, VANBIBER,
VAN BEBBER, VANBEBER, VANBABER, VANBEVER,
VANBEVERS and MANBEVERS families.

Vol. 7 No. 4 - February 2004

Welcome to your Valentine's Day issue of the Van Bibber Pioneers newsletter. With the roses, chocolates, flowers and romantic cards I hope everyone enjoyed this special day.

We are in the midst of the cold season so I am sure everyone is managing under the conditions set forth by Old Man Winter. Stay warm and comfortable and remember, the coat is not what keeps you warm - it's the air the coat traps near you.

On a genealogical point, we continue to move forward each month with new information on the Van Bibber family. I look back sixteen years ago, when I first started researching the family, at what was documented then and what has been recorded today. There has been great leaps and bounds made, but there is still a lot of work to be accomplished. Until every individual is identified the work is not complete. Please keep up the good work and keep other members of the family informed by having your findings published in the newsletter.

It is now time to pour yourself a cup of hot chocolate, sit back and enjoy reading February's issue of the newsletter.

Your Editor,

Gary R. Hawpe

JAMES H. KESTERSON

James H. Kesterson was born in Ray County, Missouri, April 10, 1849, and he was one of the best known, most influential and most popular citizens in the southern part of Nebraska for many years. James H. Kesterson was a son of James C. and Kate Kesterson, and he was a child at the time of the family removal to Nebraska Territory. Here he received the advantages of the pioneer schools, and among his classmates was the late Paul Morton, son of Hon. J. Sterling Morton, who was one of the foremost figures in Nebraska history. In the late '60s Mr. Kesterson accompanied his parents on their removal to DeWitt, Saline County, and there he engaged in the general merchandise business. In 1879 he sold his business and property interests at DeWitt and became one of the pioneer settlers in the newly founded town of Superior, Nuckolls County, where his ability, his energy and his resources forthwith made him an influential force in the development and upbuilding of the town and in the general advancing of the interests of this section of the state. Mr. Kesterson here purchased several lots in the newly platted townsite, and he here erected several business buildings, as well as a number of houses. His first enterprise here was the implement business, and he established also the first drug store and the first jewelry business in Superior. In the early days he was compelled to bring all of his merchandise in wagons from Edgar, the nearest railroad point. His integrity, his progressiveness and his versatility well fortified Mr. Kesterson for leadership in community affairs, and he was signally prosperous in all his business undertakings. He was a prominent figure in promoting the construction of the line of the Missouri Pacific Railroad between Superior and Prosser, and it was mainly due to his influence and efforts that lines of the Chicago & North Western and the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroads were brought through Superior.

Mr. Kesterson was a fancier and judge of fine horses, and brought with him several when he came to Superior. He developed many speedy standard-bred horses of the Wilkes strain, took great pleasure in racing them, and became one of Nebraska's most prominent representatives in turf events of the various racing circuits. His buoyant and generous nature won to him a host of friends, and he made his life count for much in its every relation and interest. He had no desire for political preferment, but was a loyal supporter of the principles of the Democratic party, and he was long and actively affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

At Friend, Saline County, Nebraska, on the 17th of July, 1878, Mr. Kesterson was united in marriage to Miss Ella J. McLaughlin, who was born at Zanesville, Ohio, February 28, 1856, a daughter of James R. and Elizabeth McLaughlin, who removed from Ohio to Illinois when she was a child. Mrs. Kesterson was graduated from the high school at Moline, Illinois, as a member of the class of 1873, and thereafter she taught a year in the schools of that state, whence she then came to Nebraska and became a popular teacher in the schools of Saline County, where her service was in the public schools at Friend and DeWitt. She was lured from her pedagogic activities by Mr. Kesterson, and after their marriage they continued their residence at DeWitt until their removal to Superior in 1879. Mrs. Kesterson has long been a gracious and loved figure in social and church activities at Superior, she being a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and also an influential member of the local organization of the Daughters of Rebekah. Of the two children of Mr. and Mrs. Kesterson, Mrs. Zona Berg, of this review, is the elder, and the younger, Lombard Ray Kesterson, was a resident of Lincoln, this state, and was there engaged in the automobile business at the time of his death.

Miss Zona Kesterson married Herbert Spencer Berg at Superior, Nebraska, the death of Mr. Berg occurred February 12, 1912, he having been born in Pennsylvania February 7, 1875, and having been there reared and educated. At the time of his death Mr. Berg was engaged in the mercantile business at Villisca, Iowa, his untimely death having been mourned by his wide circle of friends in Nebraska. Jack Kesterson Berg, only child of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert S. Berg, was born at Villisca, Iowa, May 24, 1903 and is now his mother's partner in the successful music business at Superior where they have a large stock of musical instruments and merchandise and where they control a large and representative trade. The Berg music store is known as one of the largest and most important of its kind in this section of Nebraska. After his graduation from the Superior High School Jack K. Berg was for two years a student in the law department of George Washington Law School, Washington, D. C., where his widowed mother likewise studied simultaneously, as previously noted in this context. Jack K. had previously, in 1912, been a student in Principia Christian Science Parochial School at St. Louis, Missouri. March 12, 1924, recorded his marriage with Miss Ruth Stansbury, of Superior, and they have a fine little son Bert Kesterson Berg, born January 22, 1925.

Mrs. Zona (Kesterson) Berg is indebted to the public schools of Superior for her early educational discipline which included that of the high school. Thereafter she was for two years a student in George Washington Law School, Washington, D. C., where her only son was a student at the same time, and in the national metropolis she availed herself also of instruction under the direction of leading exponents of voice culture, her musical training in this line having included also study under leading teachers in the City of Chicago. Mrs. Berg thus has a finely cultivated voice, and through her talent, as well as through her splendidly equipped music store, she has done much to advance musical art in her native city and county.

Mrs. Zona K. Berg has become a prominent representative of business enterprise as well as social and cultural activities in her native city of Superior, Nuckolls County, where she owns and conducts a well equipped music store that gives the best of service in all of its departments. Mrs. Berg was born at Superior, on the 21st of June, 1880, and is a daughter of James H. and Ella J. (McLaughlin) Kesterson, who were among the first settlers in Superior. The father died in 1922 and the mother is living on the old homestead.

Lombard Ray Kesterson, only brother of Mrs. Zona Berg, was born at Superior March 8, 1883, and his death occurred in Omaha, March 24, 1917, his home at the time having been in the city of Lincoln, where he was engaged in the automobile business. He married Miss Matilda Grigsby, of Superior, who survives him.

ARGUMENT HAS TRAGIC ENDING

---------------------

Andy Hughes, Sheriff of Claiborne County,
Tennessee kills Jake VanBebber,
Tuesday Night.

Andy Hughes, Sheriff of Claiborne County, Tennessee, killed Jake VanBebber here last Tuesday night at 10:30. The fight took place in a saloon on the corner of Lothberry Avenue and 18th Street.

Hughes and VanBebber became involved in an argument over the killing of two Collins Boys that occurred some two weeks before in Lee County, Virginia, where they made an attempt to arrest, or kidnap, a witness that was wanted in the murder trial in Bell County Court. Just how the fight occurred and who started it reports are conflicting, but anyway "http://webclipart.miningco.com/library/Valenboth parties employed their revolvers at each other. Hughes shooting five times and VanBebber six times, only one ball taking effect, hitting VanBebber under the heart and he died from the wound within 30 minutes.

Hughes was immediately arrested by Night Chief of Police Huston Ball and was taken to Pine-ville at 2:00 0'clock Wednesday Morning on a freight train. His examining trial was set for to-day. Judge H.Y. Hughes, his brother, and a number of other citizens of Claiborne County were here yesterday on their way to Pineville to assist in the defense of Hughes.

The remains of Mr. VanBebber were laid to rest today in the Colson Cemetery. He was 38 years old and leaves a wife and two children, a brother Robert VanBebber, Chief of Police of Middles-boro, to mourn his loss. It is very quit around Middlesboro and it is hoped that there will be no more or it.

Thundersticks, a newspaper published in Middlesboro, Bell County, Kentucky -- October 19, 1911 -- Thursday -- Page #1 .

Note: Were it states Jake leaves a brother Robert VanBebber, Chief of Police of Middlesboro, to mourn his loss, this is in error as it was his brother George VanBeber who was Chief of Police. Jake did not have a brother by the name of Robert. (GRH)

QUERIES:

I am looking for information on my grandfather's second marriage. My grandfather was Luther E. Van Bebber, born October 07, 1902, the son of Arval Agustus Van Bebber and Julia Florence Watson. He married (1st) Myrtle May Hollingsworth on July 12, 1924 in Richmond, Ray County, Missouri. Luther and Myrtle would have six children, one being my father Bobby Luther Van Bebber. Luther and Myrtle would later divorce and both remarried. I do not know the name of my grandfather's second wife and where they were married. I do know my grandfather died on May 16, 1956 in San Francisco and is buried in Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, California.

Anyone having information on my grandfather's second marriage please contact me.

      Susannah VanBibber and Thomas Hickerson
         James Hickerson

I am looking for that one piece of documentation that proves without a doubt, James Hickerson, the father of Virginia Catherine Hickerson Rouse, was the son of Thomas Hickerson and Susannah Van Bibber. From all the information I have it leads me to believe he was. The following is what I have:

My great grandmother, Virginia Catherine Hickerson Rouse, died in 1917. On her death certificate it states her father was James Hickerson and her mother's name was (no first name) Henley.

Thomas Hickerson and Susannah Van Bibber had a son James born about 1828 in Missouri. He is listed on the 1850 census of Montgomery County, Missouri as a 22 year old, living in the home of his parents Thomas and Susannah. In the book "A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri," there is an article on Thomas that states, "Thomas moved to Montgomery County in 1818 and settled on the west bank of Loutre creek, near Loutre Lick. He soon after married Susan Van Bibber, daughter of Major Isaac Van Bibber, by whom he had thirteen children -- Melissa, Thomas A., James, Isaac V., Robert L., Alfonzo, and Susan J. the other six children died in infancy."

The Hickerson family was dwelling #461 on the 1850 census of Montgomery County. Dwelling #459 is the family of Lucy J. Henley and her eight children. One daughter listed is Mary, age 13 years. I believe this Mary became the spouse of James because they appear on the 1860 census of Linn County, Missouri. James is listed as being 31 years old while Mary is 23. Listed with them is three children; Virginia - 10, Thomas - 4 and Allen - 3.

In 1870, the family has been fragmented, I'm guessing due to Mary's death, and possibly due to the Civil War. Virginia and Allen were living in Montgomery County. Virginia, age 18, is living in the home of James and Bettie Bragg of Loutre Township. Allen, age 11, is living in the home of Abner Loomis and his wife Rosa of Danville Township. Thomas (Tom), age 14 is living in the home of S. J. Pulliam (female) in Auivre Township, St. Charles County. A search for James on the 1870 census has turned up fruitless.

On the 1880 census, James, now at the age 51 and listed as a widower, shows up living in the home of his son, Thomas, age 24, in Henry County, Missouri. Virginia married James Henry Rouse in 1874 and they were recorded in Boone County, Missouri. I have no further record of James after the 1880 census.

I have searched for other possible James Hickersons born about 1828 in the state of Missouri and have come up with none. I strongly believe James, the son of Thomas Hickerson and Susannah Van Bibber, was the husband of Mary Henley.

If anyone has any information on James Hickerson or his wife Mary Henley, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Gary and Bruce,

I no longer can accomplish the necessary things that have to be done to continue e-mail. As a result, I'm going to have to quit receiving the newsletter. I can't tell you both how much I appreciate what you have done to increase my knowledge of my ancestry. I'm sure every member can say the same thing. In addition, you have both been e-mail friends. This is a great loss for me, but it is beyond my current, and future, abilities. It has been a great pleasure getting to know you. The newsletter will always be in my memory, thanks to you two and others who are no longer with us.
