I hope everyone had a great St. Patrick's Day on the
17th of this month. I have always enjoy a good parade, wearing o' the
green, and eating plenty of corned beef and cabbage. Like many others, I enjoy
being Irish for a day. Go Green!
One recent death in this month's edition
of the newsletter is that of Nada Mae Van Bebber Laurance. Nada was born in
Kansas City, Missouri to George Alfred Van Bebber and Emma J. Eads. At a young
age Nada moved west with her family to the state of Oregon. This is where she
met and married her husband, Plin Laurance, in 1916 in Douglas County. They
would continue to live in Oregon where they raised a family of three children. I
remember on numerous occasions trying to find a death record on Nada as I knew
she was born about 1896. To my surprise, I ran across her obituary on the
internet a couple of weeks ago where she had passed away in LaMiranda,
California, on January 27th, at the age of 108 years. At this time,
in my records, Nada would be the second longest living Van Bibber descendant.
The longest living one is
As you will find out we had another good month for submissions to the newsletter. I am sure everyone appreciates those who contributed. Let's not forget though, there will be another newsletter next month so keep sending the information.
It is now time to sit back and enjoy your St. Patrick's Day edition of the newsletter.

MAN RESCUED AFTER SIX DAYS
CLINGING TO CAPSIZED
BOAT
SANIBEL, Fla. (UPI) -- A Miami man on a fishing trip was airlifted to safety by the Coast Guard Saturday after clinging to his capsized 18-foot outboard for six days.
The Coast Guard intensified a search for three companions who they said might still be drifting on flotation devices in the Gulf of Mexico.
A Coast Guard helicopter spotted the overturned boat Saturday afternoon about 60 miles southwest of Sanibel Island. The man found clinging to the boat was identified as Richard L. Vanbeber, 35.
"He's in satisfactory condition, but he is suffering from exposure and you have to remember he had no food or water--he'll be here a few days," a nurse at the emergency room of Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers said.
"He frankly doesn't have much hope for his three companions, but I guess his being found alive is a miracle in itself," she added.
The U.S. Coast Guard said two cutters were searching for the other three persons, who were not immediately identified. Officials on Sanibel believe the fishing party took the boat overland from Miami to the Gulf Coast last Sunday and later that Sunday the boat overturned.

GULF SEARCHED FOR SURVIVORS
SANIBEL, Fla. (UPI) -- The Coast Guard searched Sunday for three persons in the Gulf of Mexico in hopes they had survived in the warm waters for a week after their boat capsized. One survivor was found Saturday night after he clung to his boat for six days.
The Coast Guard had one airplane, one helicopter and two cutters searching a 1,400 square mile area off the coast here for Mrs. Jeanne Vanbeber and Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Williams of Fort Lauderdale.
Mrs. Vanbeber was believed to be dead and hope for the Williams was fading.

New Entrance Is Built
At Ridgewood CemeteryGary Van Bibber, owner of Van Bibber Masonry in Wellston, is shown with the new entrance to Wellston's Ridgewood Cemetery he recently completed. According to Wellston Mayor Edgar Hayburn, the old entrance was deteriorating so badly that city officials feared part of it would collapse.
Van Bibber told
The Telegram he removed the old structure, dug new footers, and built the two structures from the ground up. According to Hayburn, there was no way to effectively patch the old structures.Hayburn said money had been put in a land maintenance fund several years go, but nothing had ever been done with the entrance.
The old entrance was build in the early 1930's and may have been constructed by WPA workers. When the city has more money to spend on the project, a metal sign will stretch from one structure to the other and will read "Ridgewood."
Van Bibber said it took him about three weeks to complete the project.

A GREAT GAMBLING AND SWINDLING CASE
The New York Times relates the circumstance of Mr. Henry P. Van Bibber of Washington city, being in New York on the 24th ult., at the Astor House, and being accosted by a young man who pretended he had been introduced to him at Brown's hotel in Washington, accompanied him to several public houses, and finally to a house which proved to be a gambling den, where the young man proposed a game of faro, to which Mr. V. Bibber demurred, as he had never played, but finally consented, and was introduced to several of the inmates. Ale was called for and drank, and though Mr. V.B. suddenly felt his head begin to swim he continued to play until he had lost $300. They then accompanied him to the Metropolitan Hotel, where all hands dined and drank freely of champagne, and in the afternoon, Mr. Van B. procured an advance of $500 on a check, returned to the gambling den and lost all.
Being by this time severely drugged, he remembered nothing until next day, when he returned to Washington, and thither the gamblers followed him, and demanded payment of $500 on the "Bank of America," at the same time presenting a check to that amount, which he had signed. Of the act of signing, however, he had no recollection, and refused to pay. One of the gamblers then exposed the whole affair in a letter to his wife. The insult prompted him to return to New York and prosecute the affair; and on his oath all the parties were arrested and held to bail in the sum of $1,500 each for trail.

HATTIE MAE YOUNGBLOOD
Hattie was born December 8, 1913, and passed from this life December 7, 2003, just a few hours before her 90th birthday. She was the sixth child in a family of six girls and three boys, in the tiny town of Pouce de Leon, Missouri. She was born in the family's two story house, and lived there until she was married to Paul Leon Youngblood on December 5, 1931.
Hattie attended high school in the nearby town of Abesville, Missouri. She was tall, and was a star basketball player for her school. She always got to jump center. Hattie had the privilege of using one of the first manuel typewriters in her school, and was the champion typist.
Hattie's life was to change dramatically when she married Paul Youngblood, who was an evangelist, gifted musician, and loved to travel. She loved the adventures of new places and new faces, but always maintained her love of home, family, gardening, canning and country life. He hands were never idle, and even with nine children of her own, she found time to quilt, crochet, raise flowers, and listen to her favorite soap operas on the radio.
Hattie was a strong, yet gentle Christian force in the lives of all her children and grandchildren, and was dearly loved by all of them. Her door was always open, and the table was always set. Hattie and Paul were married 57 years.
Hattie and Paul settled down in Bristow for good in 1971. She was active in the V.F.W. Ladies' Auxiliary. Hattie cared for Paul during his several years of illness, and was preceded by him in death December 31, 1988, when he passed away in their home.
Hattie is survived by: 5 sons (all of whom served in the military): Sherman Leon Youngblood and wife Lavina of Bristow, Oklahoma, Herman Estol Youngblood and wife Virginia of Valley Center, Kansas, Buddy Dean Youngblood and wife Becky of Fouke, Arkansas, Robert Ward Youngblood and wife Margie of Fort Worth, Texas; 4 daughters: Betty Alice Edmondson and husband Lee of Bristow, Oklahoma, Sharon Ruth Netzer and husband Tony of Springfield, Missouri, Wanda Mae Mason and husband Robert of Johnson, Iowa, and Patricia Ann Fogleman and husband Vernon of Peoria, Arizona; 23 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Wendell Maples and wife Lenora of Spring Arbor, Michigan and Ward Maples and wife Maxine of Billings, Missouri; and 1 sister: Iva Daniel of Verona, Missouri.
Hattie was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; 4 sisters; and 1 brother.
Funeral services were held 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, December 10, 2003, at the Hutchins-Maples Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Archie Rivers and Reverend Tommy Eigler officiated. Hattie was laid to rest beside Paul in Bristow City Cemetery.

Virginia Mae VanBibber and James Roy Watson
My mother, Virginia Van Bibber Watson, died on December 12, 2003 in Kingston, Tennessee. She was born on July 30, 1916 in Dixon, Illinois to Cora Juergens Van Bibber and John Donnelly Van Bibber. She was the youngest of four children - Gertrude, John and Hazel were her older siblings. All of her siblings preceded her in death - John just a few years ago at the age of 96.
Virginia was the first of her family to go to college, and she went to Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa where she met my father, James R. Watson (Jim). After dating for 5 years, they married, and at the time of her death, they'd been married 64 years! She was very adventurous, and together, after graduating from college, they moved to New York City - then to Puerto Rico where they lived for 5 years and where my two older sisters were born. Both of my parents learned to speak Spanish and our whole family became fluent in that language. They also lived in Princeton, New Jersey, then we moved to Madrid, Spain for two years. We moved back to Princeton then on to Lima, Peru for two years and back to the States again. After we were all out of the house, my parents continued their travels and lived in Mexico, England, Turkey, Greece, and again in Spain. Their travels, even into their early 80s took them to Russia and China, along with other countries. My mother was a terrific and adventurous cook always learning how to prepare dishes native to the places we lived. Her signature dish was a phenomenal and authentic paella. Virginia was very involved with community organizations leading the YWCA in Princeton, AFS, Girl Scouts, and the international student office for Rutgers University. My parents retired to Clearwater Beach, Florida in the 1980s and in 2003 moved up to Tennessee to an assisted living facility near my oldest sister, Jinx. My mother, by this time, was less able to function due to Alzheimers. She passed away in her sleep on Friday, December 12.
Virginia is survived by her husband, Jim, her four daughters, Jinx, Jane, Linda and Ellen and their spouses, her grandchildren Rachel and Jake, step grandchildren Katie, Jonathan, Jeremy and Sarah, and great grandchildren Emma Kate, Isabel and Lydia.
If anyone wishes to contact my father, his address and phone number are: James R. Watson, Wellington Place, 1098 Bradford Way, Kingston, TN 37763 1-865-717-4855
