VAN BIBBER PIONEERS E-NEWSLETTER Vol. 7 No. 6
Van Bibber Title

A free monthly electronic newsletter for the VAN BIBBER, VANBIBER,
VAN BEBBER, VANBEBER, VANBABER, VANBEVER,
VANBEVERS and MANBEVERS families.

Vol. 7 No. 8 - June 2004

WagontrainWe have now reached mid year and I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. Let's see…..there is vacations, reunions, relaxation and hopefully some time for a little family research. If so, please keep us updated with your findings. I have been getting my share of research in, but as always, at some point I have to cut it off so I can get the newsletter published to you by the end of the month.

Now that this one is finished, I am already looking forward to next month's issue. What I would like to do is construct it around information from the families of West Virginia. As you know, we had a large influx of Van Bibber family members who settled in this state while it was still part of Virginia, mainly in the counties of what is today, Kanawha, Fayette, Nicholas and Mason, not to mention a few others. We had the Donnally, Reynolds, Slaughter, Tillis, Smith, Keenan and Hill families who all branch off the Van Bibbers through female marriages and many of their descendants still live there. We will see what all the subscribers who can tie their Van Bibber roots back to West Virginia can provided for us in the "West Virginia Van Bibber Newsletter -- July 2004." If this is successful, which I know it will be, we will do other states in later issues of the newsletter. I will call for your "West Virginia " submissions in a couple of weeks.

I hope you enjoy this month's newsletter. It's hard to believe it's the 42nd issue I have published for you.

Your Editor,

Gary R. Hawpe

Ever since I've been interested in genealogy I had always heard that my 2nd great grandmother's (Elizabeth Van Bibber) first husband, William Henry Nethercutt, did not come home from the Civil War, that he hung GTT (gone to Texas) on his wagon and left the country.

The first part of this year I received an answer to an inquiry I had posted on the internet concerning what happened to William Henry Nethercutt. This individual sent me 82 pages of an U.S. Pension application filed by the widow of William, Eugenis Nethercutt, and his first wife, Elizabeth Van Bibber. All of the information is documented and sworn to as part of the pension application.

THE TRUE STORY OF WILLIAM HENRY NETHERCUTT

The true story begins with a Eugenis Nethercutt applying for a Widows Pension for the soldier William Henry Nethercutt.

A search was begun to find out if William Henry Nethercutt had an undivorced wife in Ohio or Kentucky.

In the meantime, Elizabeth Van Bibber had married Benjamin F. Williams, my 2nd great grandfather.

Both pensions were denied.

RUFUS ERNEST VAN BIBBER

Grandpa Rufus Van Bibber, was born on August 16, 1876, one of twelve children of Isaac Franklin Van Bibber and Louisa Ellen Sharp. Rufus moved from Leona, KS. to Severance in 1903 where he worked on a thrashing crew. On November 09, 1904 he was married to Julia Agnes Austin in Troy, Doniphan Co., KS.

Rufus later ran an engine on a riverboat, which was either a tug or dredge. In 1916 he was involved in an accident that left him crippled and unable to walk. Knowing he had a family to feed he delivered ice with a team and wagon and walked on his knees. A year or so later they sent him to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota where surgery was performed, and after a rehabilitation he was once again able to walk. When it came time to go home to Kansas he started walking back. People would stop and offer him a ride but he told them he was going to walk all the way home. Once there he went back to work on the river.

In 1934, Rufus lost an eye due to a spark from a steam engine. He then turned to farming to support his family. Grandma (Julia) always said he had a mule and a lot of hope. In 1940 he received a blind reading machine from the government.

Grandpa died on April 24, 1943 in Elwood, KS and was buried in Oakhill Cemetery, Severance, Doniphan Co., KS. I didn't get to know him as I was only one year old when he died, but he must have been a special old guy - Terry Williams.

NOTICES:

In the newsletter for March 2004 I listed the obituary of Nada Mae Van Bebber Laurance who died on January 27, 2004 at what I originally thought was 108 years old. I made the statement at the beginning of the newsletter she was the second oldest Van Bibber descendant I had in my files. After recalculating her age I see that she was actually 107 yrs., 1 mo. and 26 ds. at the time of her death. This puts her currently third of the longest living Van Bibber descendants. Second would be Alvis Greer Yoakum who died on December 20, 1986 at the age of 107 yrs., 7 mos. and 20 ds. He was born on April 30, 1879 in Claiborne County, Tennessee the son of David M. Yoakum and Rachel M. Moyers, and the 2nd great grandson of George Yoakum, Sr. and Martha Van Bebber.

I am currently compiling a list of Van Bibber descendants and those who married into the family that lived to be over 100 years old. If you have anyone from your branch of the family who made it to the centenarian mark please let me know, as I would like to add them to my list.

Benjamin Harrison Holcomb -- 111 years, 4 months, 29 days
Alvis Greer Yoakum -- 107 years, 7 months, 20 days
Nada Van Bebber Laurance -- 107 years, 1 month, 26 days
Grace Morris Van Bebber -- 106 years, 10 months, 17 days
Margaret VanBeber Green -- 104 years, 4 months, 1 day
Bertha Farmer Hawkins -- 102 years, 4 months, 0 days
James Calvin Keenan -- 100 years, 0 months, 2 days

JAMES VAN BIBBER REUNION
GREENUP CO., KY

The annual James Van Bibber Reunion was held on Saturday, June 26, 2004. The descendants of James Van Bibber and his two wives, (1) Sarah Margaret "Molly" Bradburn and (2) Margaret Jane Webb gathered at the home of Raymond N. & Irene June (Colley) Taulbee in Greenup, Ky. It was an enjoyable afternoon of visiting, many photo shoots and an abundance of good food.

There were seventeen members present. The descendants of James & Molly were Neville Trimble (husband of the late Hazel Van Bibber) of South Shore, Ky., Clara Irene (Van Bibber) Bryan of Cincinnati, Oh. & Norma Jean (Van Bibber) Murphy of Portsmouth, Oh. The descendants of James & Margaret were Jack & Nancy (Wheeler) Faulk of Three Rivers, Mich., Dorothy Mae (Colley) McGinnis of Sciotoville, Oh., Roger & Norene (Underwood) Madden of South Shore, Ky., Steven & Penny Sue (Taulbee) Ruggles of Franklin Furnace, Oh., Eddie Ray & Kimberly (Bennett) Taulbee of Franklin Furnace, Oh., Terry Michael & Pamela (Holcomb) Taulbee and her son, Nathan Hernandez of Greenup, Ky. and the host & hostess Raymond N. and Irene June (Colley) Taulbee of Greenup, Ky.

There were no prizes awarded, but the oldest lady was Dorothy McGinnis (86 last June), the oldest man was Neville Trimble (86 next November), youngest boy was Nathan Hernandez (12 next October). There were no young or teenage girls present. The couple driving the farthest (360 mi.) were Jack & Nancy Faulk. The couple married the longest were Raymond & Irene Taulbee (61 yrs. in December).

Donald & Vivian (Commire) Van Bibber of Fairfield Glade, Tn., also descendants of James & Margaret Van Bibber, started driving to the reunion, but turned back because of a torrential rain storm.

Our reunion was to have been held in the Greenup City Park in Greenup, Ky. as before, but due to vandalism to the park and a wedding planned for Sat., June 26, 2004, our plans had to be changed at the last moment. We are very grateful to Raymond & Irene for inviting us to have it at their home and to their family for rushing to prepare their lovely lawn and comfortable big back porch in readiness for us to still have a beautiful day, despite the change of plans.

It was decided that our next reunion will be held on the last Saturday of June, 2005 with the place to be decided at a later date.

QUERIES:

I am a great granddaughter of John Phillip VanBibber and his wife Flora Obenia Stewart of the Vanderburgh County, Indiana area.. Does anyone have any information, other than just names, of his forefathers? Also, does anyone have knowledge of why John used the name of "Bevers" about 10 years prior to his death? We also found one of his uncles who was also using the "Bevers" surname, and his death certificate listed as "Bevers." My granddad, Earl, later changed the spelling from VanBibber to VanBiber, saying he was not related to the others in Evansville, Indiana. Of course, we know he was related to the other Van Bibbers.

AREA HAPPENINGS:

Pelly Crossing -- Grandpa Ira Van Bibber's homestead.

The Yukon is burning up.  We have temperatures in the 90's.  There is smoke through the whole territory, and the evening sun turns red.

We are having our annual family reunion on July 10th here at Pelly.

One of our cousins was medivaced to Whitehorse from Dawson this weekend.  She had a stroke.  Many of our family went to Whitehorse to see her, and I phoned this morning.  The hospital staff said she was doing better.

Something interesting happened a few weeks ago at Teslin, 100 miles south of Whitehorse, when two people on a four-wheeler saw a man standing by the side of the road.  They turned around to see if he was having any problems.  When they got within 18 feet of it and saw that it had long hair all over its body and was at least 7 ft. tall in a stooped over position, they immediately retreated and the thing cleared the Alaska highway in 3 strides.  We have sasquatch sightings every summer.
