Mary Ellen (Bernard) Acker died at the age of 72 on May 11, 1904, while she was residing at 66 Clark Street in Brooklyn, New York. This is the address of the room and board establishment that two of her children, Benjamin Dunham Acker and Lillian Acker, were running at the time. The cetificate indicates that she died at about 2:45 p.m. and that the cause of death was Brights Disease of the kidney, cirrohosis of the liver, and "exhaustion." According to the certificate, her father was Joseph Bernard and her mother was Dora Baxter, both of whom were born in England. Mary Ellen Acker was born in Bangalore, India. She was a widow at the time of her death. Mary was buried in Metuchen, New Jersey, on May 16, 1904.
